Music Theory is essential for every well-rounded musician. A musician know why something sounds good. Simple theory includes note names, reading music, melody, and rhythm. Complex theory includes how extended chord structures relate to each other, Serialism, and harmonization.
Vince first encountered music theory when he began playing trumpet and reading music. He learned the basics; notes, scales, triads, key signatures, and time signatures. Later (especially when he started studying guitar and piano), Vince studied intervals, exotic scales, and chord progressions. At college and graduate school, he formally studied advanced music theory as applied to tonal harmony, twentieth century music, and jazz.
Often, theories are built upon other theories and thus support each other. Vince teaches the basics through more advanced theoretical concepts - to any musician regardless of instrument - how they can be successfully applied in practice.
Vince privately teaches trumpet, guitar, electric bass guitar, arranging, composition, music theory, ear training, and improvisation to students of all ages and levels.

Though firmly rooted in jazz, he is comfortable with a wide variety of genres including rock, soul, funk, folk, classical, and electronic.
Vince earned the Masters of Music degree in Jazz Performance from the University of the Arts; and earned the Bachelor of Science in Music degree concentrating in Jazz Studies and Theory & Composition from the State University of New York (SUNY) at New Paltz. He studied trumpet through undergraduate and graduate school with Rebecca Coupe Franks
, Dennis Wasko, and John Swana. Vince has also attended master classes held by Randy Brecker, Matt Gallagher, Michael Abene, Craig Morris, Steve Wilson, Claudio Roditi, Pat Martino, Malcolm McNab, Matthew Shipp, Scott Holbert, John Abercrombie, Jeff Curnow, and Alison Balsom.
Vince first began teaching music in 2006 as the trumpet instructor at Silver Creek Central School. He directed trumpet master classes for high school students. Vince later took on various private students teaching trumpet, guitar, electric bass, improvisation, arrangement and composition. While earning his Master of Music at the University of the Arts, he served as the trumpet department intern and was responsible for teaching private trumpet lessons, preparing transcriptions for class materials and live performances, and proctoring music theory exams. Also at UArts, Vince was a teaching assistant for the Freshman Jazz Improvisation class for which he conducted sectionals, administered exams, and offered critiques regarding inventiveness of improvisations. In 2017 he taught a jazz improvisation masterclass at Schenectady County Community College.
Since each student approaches music differently; Vince tailors his teaching to fit students' approaches. He asks each student, "What do you want to accomplish?" Together, they set short and long term goals. Vince believes a strong technical foundation leads to freer ease of artistic expression. His students receive a wholistic approach to music applicable to whatever instrument they choose.
Vince’s original music has been described as “a contemporary instance of fusion done right” (Matthew Aquilin, All About Jazz). His next album, The Nook, is a full length straight-ahead jazz album featuring John Swana. The music harks back to Miles Davis' first great quintet. The Nook was preceded by Sound Plan (2017), Live at PafA (2017), Syzygy (2014), and Syzygy: Remix (2014). Vince is currently self producing four more solo albums. One unreleased composition was recently featured in the Philadelphia Real Book Volume 1.
Vince has appeared as a side man on 40+ albums. He is the trumpeter and arranger with the York Street Hustle, the John Byrne Band, and You Do You. Vince founded the Philly Phatness horn section, which has recorded with regional, national, and international artists, and on film soundtracks. He serves as Musical Director and bassist for Phloyd: a Philadelphia Pink Floyd tribute band. Lessons are designed to teach music through sight-singing melodies and reading rhythms. Learning to read music is not very difficult if one organizes their time and practices certain exercises. These skills will help one learn songs more quickly and improve one's musical ears.
Sandra began her training at the Settlement Music School in Philadelphia. She is a two time recipient of the Mario Lanza Award, and holds a B.M. degree in opera from the Philadelphia College of Performing Arts. She studied acting at both the Wilma and Walnut Theaters in Philadelphia. In New York, she studied Shakespeare at the HB Studios, and received on-camera training at the Weisst- Barron Commercial School. Sandra is a member of Actor's Equity.
Sandra was engaged for seven years at Theater des Westens in Berlin, Germany, where she performed extensively in Musicals and Operetta. She also toured throughout Germany with the ensemble "Operetten Express". In the U.S., Sandra has toured nationally with "Man of La Mancha" and "Carousel", and has performed leading roles in many regional theaters. She also performed in the Off-Broadway
Musical "Mamaleh". Sandra has performed in over fifty productions of Musicals, Operetta, and Opera. Some of her favorite roles include: Aldonza (Man of La Mancha), Desiree (A Little Night Music), Marguerite (The Scarlet Pimpernel), Antonia (The Tales of Hoffmann), and Lauretta (Gianni Schicchi).
Most recently, she has performed the role of Lynn Fontanne in Ten Chimneys at Old Academy Players, and played one of the principal roles in Jacque Brel Is Alive And Well and Living In Paris at The Steel River Playhouse.
As a director, Sandra has staged operas for Center City Opera Theater, the Delaware Valley Opera Company, Boheme Opera New Jersey, and the New York Metro Vocal Arts Ensemble. She is currently singing concerts with the vocal group "Touch of Classics", and can be seen in commercials for Time Warner, Cuisinart, The Skooter Store, and Aspercreme.

Sandra is a very positive and enthusiastic teacher. She makes sure you are following proper technique and is thorough in telling you which steps to follow. I would recommend her to anyone who wants to try singing lessons or who wishes to improve their technique.
Music Theory encompasses the building blocks of music and helps create a complete understanding of the music being performed. I have experience teaching both jazz and classical theory, and pass this knowledge onto my students so that they may enhance their enjoyment.

*** Home Studio *** I offer lessons in my home located within walking distance of Broad Street in South Philadelphia, near the Tasker-Morris subway stop. I am equipped with a well-playing upright piano and plenty of space for musical activities. There is ample street parking in the area during the afternoon and early evening, and our living room is available to parents while students take their lesson. Students who travel to me for lessons gain all the benefits of performing on a piano, rather than an electric keyboard, and have access to many more resources that I am able to offer from my home, such as recordings and method books.
*** Specialties *** I specialize teaching "late starters" (teens and adults new to piano) fundamentals in music in a fun and exciting way that will have you playing the music you love quickly.
For brass instruments, I am able to help brand new beginners build up their sound and facility through simple exercises that will have them astounded by their progress.
MATH: I use my years of classroom teaching and Master's degree in math education as experience to help guide you to the success you are seeking. I am able to tailor sessions to your specific needs with a few key points in mind:

Bryn Coveney, from Albany, New York, is a recent graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music. An active performer in the Philadelphia and New York City regions, Ms. Coveney has performed with the Philadelphia Orchestra, Radio City Orchestra, Pennsylvania Ballet, Albany Symphony Orchestra, and on Broadway. She has performed across the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and China. She has recorded at NFL Films, Abbey Road Studios in London, and for the Naxos and Albany Records labels. Prior to entering Curtis, she received a bachelor's degree in Music Performance from Ithaca College, and an MMus in Advanced Performance from the Royal College of Music, London. While at the Royal College, she was selected to perform in the Royal College of Music's Orchestral Pathway training scheme, which included sit-ins with the BBC Symphony Orchestra
and the London Symphony. Ms. Coveney is the recipient of the Leverhulme Orchestral Membership Award and the John Lewis, Michael Quinn, and Eugene-Rittich awards. She has performed with the Spoleto USA Festival Orchestra, at Boston University's Tanglewood Institute, Domaine Forget Music Festival, and the Bar Harbor Brass Week in Maine. Her previous teachers include Jennifer Montone and Jeffrey Lang at Curtis, Nigel Black, Simon Rayner, and John Ryan at the Royal College of Music, and Alexander Shuhan at Ithaca College.
My approach to teaching has a very heavy emphasis on implementing the idea of mindfulness into the students life. I have found that this is not only the quickest way to learn, but also the most motivating way to learn any skill for both my students and myself. A simple awareness of the finite details that go into a craft, while at the same time acting upon them in way that is loose and detached has helped me learn an array of new skills and has profoundly changed my life as well as others for the better.

After 30 years I finally decided to learn how to play drums. Kevin clearly knows what he's doing in any genre of drumming! It seemed like every lesson he had a clear/thorough plan, didn't stress me out by teaching to rapidly, or bore me by going to slowly. A very solid teacher.

Rachel is adept at teaching sight reading and basic music theory
Rachel S. is a Lyric Soprano that hails from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In July, she portrayed the role of Mother in Humperdink’s Hansel and Gretel with the Miami Opera Institute. This fall, she recently worked as a Resident Artist with Utah Opera.
Last spring, she completed her Master’s of Music at Rice University, under the instruction of acclaimed voice teacher, Dr. Stephen King. There, she performed the role of Lady Billows in their 2014 production of Britten’s Albert Herring. Rachel made her operatic debut with Rice University in their fall of 2012 production of Volpone as Celia. With Rice University, she was also featured in their scenes programs as Mimi from La Bohème, Ilia from Idomeneo, Rosalba from Florencia en el Amazonas, and Mrs. Fiorentino from Street Scene.
Rachel has performed extensively with the Aspen Opera Theat
er Center. Last summer, she understudied Sybil Vane in Loehmann’s The Picture of Dorian Grey. In 2013, she performed the role of Suor Osmina in their production of Suor Angelica, and covered the roles of Fortuna and Venere in their production of L’coronazione di Poppea. She also portrayed Pamina, La Contessa, Ilia, Anne Truelove and Laurie Moss in their various scenes programs.
Rachel completed her Bachelor’s of Music at Mannes College in 2012. There, she performed in their Opera Scenes Workshop and their Rise of Modernism Festival, singing Canciones populares Españolas by Manuel de Falla.
She is an amazing instructor and I have already seen my improvement after the first lesson.

Rachel was great! She made me feel very comfortable and taught me so much about singing in the short time that we had. She is extremely knowledgeable about the human voice in general and teaches about proper technique that will not only boost your confidence but will keep you singing down the road. My name is Collin. I have been teaching private lessons since 2013 and have helped young students learn to read music and to sing and play simultaneously. I have also taught accomplished musicians to play electric bass, my primary instrument. I earned my Bachelor of Music degree in Professional Music with a concentrate in Music Education and Performance at Berklee College of Music in 2014. I currently play in rock bands Ellen Siberian Tiger and Mother Moses, and in the Bachelor Boys wedding band. I have had experience playing a wide variety of styles of music including rock, folk, Afro-Cuban, Brazilian, jazz, funk, blues, and R&B. I teach beginner to intermediate guitar, drums, and piano, and all levels of electric bass playing.
An understanding of music theory is at the root of all reading and understanding of music. Lessons in music theory will address the specific goals and genre interest of the student. Anything from how to read jazz chords to understanding the complexities of Beethoven can be covered.
Pianist, music director, and vocal coach, Erik was born and raised in Eastern Washington state. As a solo pianist, he has been heard all across the northwest and beyond, in cities including Seattle, Portland, Tacoma, NYC, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Philadelphia, and internationally in Prague and Salzburg. Erik has been a guest artist at Whitman College, Portland State University, The Kairos Chamber Music Lyceum, California State University Summer Arts, the West Seattle Symphony, and the Gig-Harbor Peninsula Symphony Orchestra. In addition to performing, Erik’s passion for teaching has led him to be an adjudicator for various festivals including the Washington Sonata-Sonatina Festival and the Washington Regional Solo and Ensemble Festival.

eless musical Cabaret. This production was on tour from December 2017 through May 2018 all across North America. Erik currently resides in Philadelphia, where he coaches and plays for a diverse range of singers. In addition to coaching and playing, Erik works as Music Director for musical theater, manages a private studio, and serves as Artistic Director of the Media Performing Arts Series. Previous successes include performances with mezzo-soprano, Angela Niederloh and baritone, Matthew Hayward in Portland, and a performance of the Grieg piano concerto with the West Seattle Symphony. Upcoming engagements on the East Coast include collaborative work with with soprano, Leah Golub.
