My goals for my cello and piano students include the development of effective technique and musicality, as well as focusing on the profound beauty that humans can create and celebrate. Growth, both musical and personal, happens within a positive learning environment and with constructive feedback, in small moments and in large, and with successes and failures. Effective music education happens in an environment of mutual respect and connection. While it goes without saying that learning an instrument should be enjoyable, it is also hard work that is immensely rewarding. To learn anything is to be vulnerable and open to criticism, feedback, and new ideas. This can only happen in a space where feedback is honest, kind, and engaged. Physically healthy playing technique is imperative to the improvement of one’s playing, as well as continuing to play for a long time without damage to the body. It is my mission to help my students develop and maintain healthy habits so they avoid long-term ...

This has been an amazing process with my God son. He has ADHD and while initially he had some difficulty being focused he is beginning to slow down and is grasping the ability to learn. Wilma is very patient and an excellent instructor. We really approach her.

I have a degree in music with a teaching certificate. I have been teaching cello privately for 10 years. Depending on the age of the child we will start with either Essential Elements or Suzuki cello book one. They will start with proper positioning and plucking. Once they have 8 notes down, we start bowing. As we progress, we will be doing scales, and etudes.

About Chris

I have been teaching private violin for over 20 years, and private viola/cello for about 10. I have taught in Charles and St. Mary's County Public schools. I am a member of American Strings Teacher's Association, National Association for Music Educators (Maryland Music Educators Association), and th

If you’re looking for a dedicated, knowledgeable and patient strings teacher, you will love Mrs. Heins. Both of my sons have been taking lessons from Mrs. Heins for several years (one for viola and one for cello). They have learned so much under her instruction, such as earning All-County and All-State honors. They also practice their live performance skills twice a year during informal musical concerts. Mrs. Heins also offers participation in the Royal Conservatory Music Development program, which can earn your child credit for college. She is a gem and should you choose her, you won’t be disappointed.

I have over 35 years of experience teaching cello. Every student has different needs; I work with you at whatever point you are at; beginners through advanced students welcome. I have a doctorate in cello.

I recommend lessons 30 minutes in duration for beginners, particularly children; adult beginners can choose 30 or 45 minutes. Students who can play longer pieces definitely need a little longer lesson so we get through everything. (Please note that I do not take children under 10 years of age; there are other teachers who are better teaching younger kids.)

I use Suzuki books for their inexpensive repertoire but I do not teach using the Suzuki method nor do I teach rote playing. I supplement these books with technique materials from Rick Mooney (Position Pieces, Thumb Position) and studies by cellist-composers of the past. If you have an interest in another area of playing, let's talk and find pieces that interest you.

About Brenda

I love teaching cello! I’ve spent over 30 years of my life doing it and at this point, I think I’m quite good at what I do. :) I have a reputation for students with solid technique who have learned how to solve problems and play in tune, in rhythm, with good sound and musical understanding. Let

"My son had a very positive experience studying cello with Genevieve for two years before she moved to a new city for a job opportunity. We would have loved to continue studying with her! Genevieve was very positive and encouraging to my son and really helped him improve his bowing and fingering technique. She was always very patient but pushed just enough so that my son felt challenged and proud of the continual improvement in his playing. She also was very organized and always started and ended lessons on time. We highly recommend Genevieve as a cello teacher!"

Is Cello Hard to Learn? Read THIS Before Taking Lessons

Many beginning musicians wonder, “Is cello hard to learn?” The process of learning the cello is not difficult, but it’s important to keep in mind that the cello is not an instrument of instant gratification. It does require focused, daily practice time and a good teacher to guide you along the way. How far you progress with cello is a direct result of the amount of quality time you put into practicing the instrument. Even someone who puts in just 30 minutes a day will notice a signi …

Cello Thumb Position: Where to Place Your Fingers & Hands

Cello thumb position is one of the big leaps of technique for advancing cellists and is one of the skills that sets more advanced students from the intermediate. This new technique opens up the higher ranges of the instrument and allows us to play more advanced solos and etudes. This technique is not something you should rush into though! Make sure to take things slowly at first and master the basic concepts before moving on.  When Should You Focus on Your Cello Thumb Position? There have to …

What Does it Take to Become a Professional Cello Player?

Pursuing a career in music is a risky decision, because by the nature of the industry few artists can “make it big.” Most artists aren’t pop stars, or even full-time career musicians, and all musicians also teach to remedy this. There are many paths to becoming a professional cello player, and depending on where you start it might be easy or hard to earn a reputation and start making money. I followed an academic path, studying classical music at university and then continuing my research …
