About Gail
I studied music from elementary school through high school, taking a break to have a family. After I volunteered to teach Kindergarten and first grade music at a school in Lakeside, I picked up my instruments and began to study again in earnest. Many hours of study, lessons and practice later, I am a better musician than I have ever been, and I've also gained a valuable perspective on teaching that I never could have had by simply being a musician.

I currently play viola with Equinox Quartet, playing Renaissance music up through the Baroque period.

My strengths lie in working with young children, helping them both understand music and love it. My goal for every student is to leave me having a strong understanding of theory, musicianship and desire to seek out more opportunities for growth. I work with each student to tailor a prog
ram specifically for their needs, from working through simple bowing mechanics issues to the psychology of performance. Each student has different challenges to overcome, and simply using a one-size fits all approach is not going to help them.

I pride myself in being flexible and available to to my students for questions, whenever they may need to ask them. I believe that you shouldn't have to wait for the next lesson to have the question answered that may just make the pieces start coming together a bit quicker for you.

*** Lesson Details ***
A typical lesson consists of checking student's progress, addressing any immediate issues and working on skill building.

OK, so those are the basics, but what happens is so much more than that! One student may have trouble hitting a C#, so we'll work on those. Another may have trouble relaxing, we might spend some time on breathing exercises to help with that. Still another might have a death grip on the neck of their instrument, so we'll do some exercises to help relax their hands.

My goal is to help students get well on their way to a lifetime love of learning and making music.

In 3-6 months, they should be:
* Reading music consistently at a level appropriate to their progress.
* Developing an understanding of rhythm and meter.
* Placing their fingers properly, and reliably for the most part.
* Developing correct posture and holding their instrument and bow in a relaxed manner that suits their body type and facilitates the freedom of movement required for great music.

My newbie (beginner with zero experience) son has been taking violin lessons via skype for almost 2 years now. I specifically was looking for a teacher who could meet us over the internet, considering I needed a break from the commute. Although I wasn't sure this could work, I gave it a shot...& I am SOOO glad I did! I love the flexibility for our lessons to be in the early morning before school, we could only do this online.

My son LOVES playing his violin! It's funny because he wanted to quit once or twice when he came upon new challenges, etc. Gail works patiently with him as he gains confidence, slowly but surely he has improved dramatically. She has customized his lessons perfectly to fit his needs which is what I was hoping for. Online accompaniment to his songs made it even more fun & we just started a fiddle book (my son's request) which he is enjoying enormously.

My son picks up his violin & plays on his own all the time, WOW! He sounds great, is learning good technique & theory, but most importantly he was given a chance to enjoy the learning process, to me this is priceless. You won't be disappointed with Gail, she is a GREAT teacher! So glad we found her!!!

Side note: In the beginning I was trying to figure out how to tune the violin for my son, & fingering.The snark tuner & the chinatera fingerboard sticker gave me some needed confidence that we could do this online.

In my one hour of comprehensive teaching, students learn extensively the techniques of the violin, including tone production, vibrato, musicality and pieces of music which are chosen from standard violin literature or Suzuki books. The whole idea is to get students to look at the whole learning process as a fun activity, and very soon they acquire the ability to produce beautiful sounds, correct intonation and strong vibrato. In addition to the above, I conduct some some ear-training exercises to improve intonation as well.

Mr. Nader is a wonderful teacher who truly cares about his students. He is kind, patient, and funny. When I first started taking lessons from Mr. Nader, I didn't know how to read the notes, let alone play the violin. But through his patience and encouragement I have drastically improved and have come to really enjoy playing the violin. Gabrielle is great at teaching my 9 year old french. She makes his lessons fun and keeps him engaged so that he always looks forward to his lessons. She does a great job engaging with the interests of her students, instead of sticking to a rigid lesson plan and losing the student. For example, quietly inserting verb conjugation and tense training into the telling of a story her student is determined to share with her. She really works with the kid's interests and gets their buy-in and engagement.

Education goals:
I believe students, no matter the age, background, or means, can achieve great music making and enjoy a fun and satisfactory journey doing so. I am experienced in using Suzuki, Indiana String Pedagogy, some Kodaly, and my own method, to foster this learning. I have been teaching children ages 5-18, and adult students, for almost ten years now. Working at Fairview Elementary gave me a great introduction to group teaching in a classroom, which I hope to soon be able to build upon. BIOGRAPHY:
Augusta is an emerging classical and baroque violinist, performing internationally as both soloist and orchestral musician. She was winner of the 2014 Indianapo
lis Baroque Orchestra Concerto Competition, and semifinalist in the 2014 Musica Antiqua International Competition in Bruges, Belgium. Augusta holds a B.M. degree from the Oberlin Conservatory and a M.M. degree from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. She will begin studies at The Juilliard School in the Fall of 2015 for baroque violin, as proud recipient of a Kovner Fellowship. Recent highlights include a performance as chamber musician with members of the Cleveland Baroque Orchestra, Apollo's Fire, in their Bach Family Frolic concert series in January 2015.
In the 2015-2016 season, Augusta will perform as concerto soloist with the Indianapolis Baroque Orchestra, with the Bach A minor Violin Concerto. Augusta performs as an apprentice with Apollo's Fire and is a substitute violinist with Boston Baroque. She has collaborated on stage with members of Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra during their Winter Institute, and was invited to play in a Tafelmusik masterclass for renowned violinist Elizabeth Wallfisch.
On modern violin she has worked under such conductors as Kurt Masur, Michael Tilson Thomas, Alan Gilbert, James Gaffigan, David Zinman, and Robert Spano.
Augusta holds a Bachelor of Music from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music in violin performance, with a minor in historical performance, graduating at age 19 with honors (Pi Kappa Lambda Society). Her principal teachers were Milan Vitek (modern violin) and Marilyn McDonald (baroque violin). She currently is pursuing her Masters of Music in violin performance at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, under the tutelage of Alexander Kerr and Stanley Ritchie. She spent an exchange semester in 2011-12 at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, with Johannes Leertouwer and Sophie Gent.
She began her violin studies at the age of three with the Suzuki Violin School Method, continuing her studies in Moscow, Russia at the age of 12 with Zoya Makhtina of the Moscow Central Special Music School. Throughout her childhood, Augusta studied privately with Gregory Fulkerson and Almita and Roland Vamos.
Her related teaching coursework includes classes at Oberlin Conservatory and Indiana University, in pedagogy. She has studied string pedagogy methods with Mimi Zweig and Joanne Erwin. I very much appreciated Augusta's efficient and organized usage of curriculum. She taught two of my children in their highschool years. Augusta works with Suzuki and other methods, and creates a wonderful combination that really helps get the most of one's musical and violinistic goals. She is both persistent and fun. Doesn't let anything slide, but at the same time makes learning effortless and fun. Both my kids enjoyed working with her very much. She seems to work well with all ages and personalities. Augusta is also very friendly, and easy to schedule with. I would definitely recommend her to anyone.

I am a professional violist working in the central Illinois region. I've been playing the viola for 21 years, and also am comfortable on the violin as well. I received my Bachelors of Arts from Gustavus Adolphus College in 2004, double majoring in Music Performance (viola) and in Philosophy. Afterwards, I completed my Masters of Music in 2010 at Illinois State University in Normal, Illinois.

I have been playing the violin for over 9 years now and have led first violin sectionals in my high school orchestra for four years, giving me valuable experience in guiding students through very difficult passages of music and in teaching them advanced techniques. I am able to teach basic note reading, the basics of bow holding and posture, and all other aspects of introductory violin and music. Hello! I am a college student looking for opportunities to help you learn! I am most able to teach music, specifically the violin, but can help in a number of academic subjects as well. I have been playing the violin for nine years, have been concertmaster/principal violin of Heritage High School's prestigious Orchestra program for two years, and have attended the statewide Solo and Ensemble festival since seventh grade, receiving "Superior" ratings every year. At the state competition my senior year, I was nominated to be a member of the Michigan Youth Arts Honors Orchestra, with an extra nomination to be one of four "Outstanding Soloists" in the entire state. Since I had been concertmaster of Heritage's orchestras, I was leading sectionals for my four years of high school, which is where my initial teaching experience comes from. Beyond
my curricular musical experience, I have composed a few orchestral pieces of my own, played as a guest soloist in multiple ensembles locally, and played in various youth and festival orchestras.

I believe in a very relaxed and comfortable teaching environment and teacher-student relationship, and I make it clear that the time that you are willing to put into learning determines how well you will learn. I make my best effort to mimic how my violin teachers taught me, as I was always excited to spend an hour of my week with an impassioned, joyful master of an art (though admittedly, I am no master!). Regardless, I am here to help and guide you in whatever way possible, but, as always, "practice makes perfect!"

Beyond my musical experience and accolades, I had a very successful academic career in high school. I graduated summa cum laude and top 20 in my class of 350 from Heritage High School, with a near 4.0 GPA. My academic merits earned me a full tuition scholarship from Saginaw Valley State University, where I currently attend. Given my academic experience and merits, I consider myself able to teach high school mathematics (Geometry and Algebra 1) and some English as well.
