I began studying music theory in high school, and have taken several semesters of college-level music theory. To complement and support my music theory and ear training knowledge, I have studied piano at the intermediate level. Music theory will help you appreciate, interpret, and enjoy music - I can't imagine not knowing what I know about music theory, and I want you to feel the same way. Here are materials I can use in music theory lessons:
- The Musician's Guide to Theory and Analysis (Clendinning and Marvin)
- The Musician's Guide to Theory and Analysis workbook (Clendinning and Marvin)
- The Musician's Guide to Aural Skills Sight-Singing book (Murphy, Phillips, Marvin, Clendinning)
- Materials and Techniques of Post-Tonal Music (Kostka and Santa)
- Grand piano (in my College Studio and can be used online)
- Yamaha electric piano (in my Home Studio and can be used online)

I believe Music Theory is very fundamental in music learning as it holds a strong basis to teach to read and understand music more fluently. Scales, modes, key signatures, time signatures, borrowed chords, modulation, secondary dominant, jazz improvisation, counterpoint, etc... I can teach beginner to advanced to AP Level Prep and College prep.

He is also very knowledgeable in music composition, arranging, and in the use of Logic Pro software that he could use while teaching theory."
Eric is wonderful! He's great at explaining things, VERY patient and has a lot of fun while teaching. Best music teacher I've had so far!"

I'd highly recommend him to anyone who is just beginning music theory and/or piano playing as you'll pick up a solid foundation in these subjects. He is also extremely patient, making sure I understood the initial concepts before moving on to more complex topics. I just wouldn't recommend him for any last minute cramming: as he does like to take his time to provide a quality learning experience rather than just reviewing and memorizing."

As you learn songs and work through your music books, do you memorize the notes? Or do you read along every time you play? In this post, music teacher Vanessa G. discusses the pros and cons to the approaches... Imagine your teacher gives you a piece of music to study. What's your process? Do you listen to a recording, memorizing the melody and the stylistic aspects before you begin, and then as you play? Or would you sit down and sight read the notes, and perfect it from that star …
