New York-based pianist Nicole Brancato is a stimulating and adventurous performer, composer, and teacher. As an award-winning young artist, she has performed throughout America and Italy, appearing in such venues as Lincoln Center, the Guggenheim, and the 92Y, as well as the “underground” and unusual performance spaces in New York City.

Brancato is a champion of creative and conceptual performance. She participated in the Guggenheim’s marathon performance of Satie’s Vexations along with Christian Wolff, Philip Corner, David Del Tredici, and Joshua Rifkin, all four of whom performed in John Cage’s 1963 legendary premiere of the work. This unique 19-hour concert was featured in The New York Times and Art News. On the international network Rai Italia, Brancato gave an intimate televised concert and interview for the series “L’altra I
talia” in which she explored her roots and her love for New York’s exhilarating music scene. Her modern big band project “The Titanics,” for which she acted as pianist and lead arranger, was deemed “brilliant” by New York Magazine and was featured multiple times in The New Yorker and Time Out New York.

With her passion for programming both traditional and avant-garde music in thought-provoking ways, Brancato receives great acclaim from audiences: “I am still reeling from Nicole’s recital,” said a Metropolitan Opera Guild board member, “The way she played … will stay with me forever.” In addition to her solo career, she is a key member of two unconventional chamber ensembles: Audible Abstraction - a bold new music trio - and 2Squared - a dynamic piano duo. In all of her endeavors, Brancato creates a connective, intellectual, and provocative experience for her audiences.

Brancato won multiple competitions during her career, most recently winning the Hunter Symphony’s Aria and Concerto competition with Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G. She holds an M.A. in piano performance from Hunter College in New York City and a B.M. in piano performance from Georgia State University in Atlanta, GA. She graduated summa cum laude from both institutions and was awarded the Benno Lee Prize at Hunter for an outstanding Master’s Recital. She is a member of the American College of Musicians’ Piano Guild and has studied with the likes of Geoffrey Burleson and William Wolfram. In my studio, I believe that my role is to steer students toward a deeper understanding of themselves, their instrument, and their relationship to music. I tailor my teaching to the needs of my individual students, who currently range from age 4 to adult, often adding improvisation and extended techniques to increase my students’ awareness of the potential of the flute as a channel for one’s creativity.

With over a decade of teaching and a doctorate in flute performance, I have extensive experience teaching flute lessons and recorder lessons to students from beginners to advanced. I teach at my studio in Brooklyn or can come to your home in New York City. I have previously taught in Colorado, Westchester, NY, and throughout New York City. I've been on faculty at The Harmony Program and the Denver Public School’s Saturday Music Program, where I taught beginning flute classes to public school children. Working with Joseph was a delight! He provided his services as an accompanist for a Christmas music video I was recording.

He was always punctual when arriving to rehearsals, scheduling rehearsals was a breeze, even with our packed schedules, and he was always prepared for each rehearsal with copies of the music I'd provided, as well as notes he'd gained by working through the music prior to the rehearsal.

He had a pleasant demeanor, and plenty of creative ideas for any places in the song that allowed for improvisation or personalization of the chords or phrasing. His accompaniment was the perfect companion to my singing, and could range many genres of music.

I also worked with him as the pianist in larger bands performing in the NYC area, and there as well, he was great to work with. Highly recommended! :)

I love music theory for it's ability to organize and clarify the rich and complex musical world, and I often find myself getting as excited about theory as I do about performance. I have studied traditional theory and jazz harmony as well as George Russell's Lydian Chromatic Concept of Tonal Organization. I have taken the trumpet lessons with Bobby S. for about two years now. What I really appreciate most about Bobby is his patience. As an older student, it can be very challenging to learn trumpet. Bobby presents his lesson in a way that is easy to understand. He takes the time to explore what my difficulties are. Then he presents me with ways to challenge them. Bobby also has a good understanding of music theory. He explains and demonstrates musical concepts very thoroughly.
