I was born in California but raised in the sleepy town of Beaverton, Oregon, enmeshed in massive groves of pine and poplar trees and long, cool rainy days. I entered into the world of creativity and music when I was just thirteen by composing poetry and song lyrics, and began dabbling with my sister's used classical guitar when I was 15. From there, I taught myself simple songs by composers like Neil Young, America and Crosby Stills and Nash and developed an interest in rock and blues. I began taking lessons in guitar and voice and was completely dedicated to the guitar never missing a day of practice for over 6 years.
I began performing in my teens playing at parties, small clubs and coffee shops. I specialized in songs with strong vocal parts and worked diligently at perfecting my singing voice and my ability to accompany m
yself smoothly and precisely. I started getting more involved with harder rocking bands such as Pearl Jam and the Foo Fighters and prided myself with the ability to match the vocal parts in both accuracy and intensity. I raised the level of professionalism up on my own writing skills as well and publishing a lyrical device in a poetry publication known as “In Dappled Sunlight.” I also enjoying some radio airplay for one of my songs and was fortunate enough to open for the illustrious Paul Kantner and Jefferson Starship in an acoustic set in Denver, Co.
Although my formal education was in Psychology and Counseling, I continued taking lessons in guitar and voice while simultaneously refining my sound and my skills. I also began teaching during this time working with students from 5 to sixty-five and focusing on acoustic guitar skills as well as vocal training and most of all, finding enjoyment in music. To me, teaching is an integral part of music as I truly believe that the gift of music is wasted unless its shared with others. Seeing a student realize his or her musical dreams is one of the greatest joys that I have experienced as a musician and I'm dedicated to the teaching process for life. I'm also dedicated to performing and to this day I have done over 1000 shows, playing the coziest of street corner pubs to big festivals with thousands of people present. I feel that this performance experience in combination with over 20 great years of teaching has made me the highly qualified instructor that I am today.
Although there are many singer/songwriters, I feel I am unique in that I strive to incorporate power and passion into the simplest of musical pieces and have learned how to teach this process to others. I feel that finding the passion in music, whether it be rhythm or lead guitar or voice, can make the difference between being a mediocre musician and a great one regardless of your skill level. I feel I have the insight and patience as well to work with anyone who has the desire and dedication to become a great musician.
I now live in the beautiful town of Fort Collins, Colorado where I both perform and teach with regularity and also operate my counseling practice where I specialize in helping children and adults work through anxiety and depression. I hope to work with each of you in the near future and help you to achieve the lofty musical goals that you have set out for yourself. Mark

*** Lesson Details ***
Simply stated, students can expect what they're willing to contribute to the learning process. At least half of learning is done before or after the lesson during the student's practice time so the time in between lessons is extremely important. Although I am a laid back instructor, I also have high expectations of the student and will define those in the first lesson. The curriculum is based on years of teaching experience and will be tailor-made to your current age, development and experience level. The word "dedication" is an important one here as well because if you're dedicated, then you 'll become a life-time learner and musician rather than a part time participant. So, after 3-6 months you may learn almost nothing or you will become a proficient player, it's all up to you!

If you want to learn how to be a guitar shredder, lessons will include playing techniques from the guitar players you want to play like.
If you want to learn to be a great acoustic player, we will go over picking and strumming techniques as well as acoustic chord structures.

I met Robby in college and he was a really good guitar player. I wanted to learn from him as much as I could. He actually took the time to set me up with lessons and gave me very specific stuff to practice. He would check in with me every couple weeks and see if I had any questions and how I was doing. I moved and had to stop lessons for a year or two. A few years later I called him and asked to get together for a couple lessons. He was blown away at how much I improved and was so genuinely happy for me. We still talk every week and if I ever have a guitar question I call him. He's my friend, and he's gonna be a famous guitar player some day.

I started learning from Rob 5 years ago. I didn't think he'd want to spend time teaching me because I didn't know anything about guitar and he was so good. I was so wrong! Since our first lesson, he treated me like a friend, and 5 years later and we are great friends. I started off being able to play a couple notes, and now I can pay solos and songs and learn just about anything I want! Thanks Rob! Take Lessons from this guy! He's the Best!

My brother told me he found this great guitar teacher, and I was skeptical because he has been playing guitar for a long time and has never really sounded good. Two weeks after he mentioned him, all of the sudden he didn't suck any more. He was actually kinda good. So I tried a lesson with him and Wow! Within my first lesson I was already able to play a song! I can't afford lessons since I'm in school right now, but my brother still takes lessons with him. Even though I no longer take lessons with him I still call Rob and ask him questions about guitar all of the time, and he always makes time for me. I don't know where my brother or I would be without him. Great Teacher. Great Friend.

I have been teaching this subject for over 16 years. There is no specific curriculum as each student will come to lessons with their own unique skills, needs, and goals. Lessons are tailored to those specifics. This subject deals with the practicalities of music performance, be it instrumental, vocal, or conducting. Issues covered include entering and exiting the stage, bowing, stage presence, speaking to an audience, dealing with memory issues in performance, and more.

About Troy
Composer Troy W. graduated from the New England Conservatory, earning his Bachelors, Masters (cum laude) and Graduate Diploma while studying with mentor Malcolm Peyton. After spending a year studying with Lukas Foss in Boston, Mr. W. moved to Houston in 2001 where he continued graduate studies at Rice University's Shepherd School of Music.

During his time as a teacher with the Michael P. Hammond Preparatory Program at Rice University's Shepherd School of Music, Troy taught classes in music fundamentals and music theory for pre-college students. He has also served on the faculty of the Summer Institute for Piano teaching courses in Form & Analysis for pre-college students.

Troy also has maintained a private studio, tutoring and teaching private lessons in composition, ear training, voice, piano, literature, and history for over ten
years. Students who have studied with him come from a wide range of backgrounds with different goals. Those who have continued with musical studies in college have consistently placed out of at least the first two semesters of music theory and achieved advanced placement in their chosen fields of study. Those who chose a different path continue to benefit from the education and training they received from taking music lessons.

*** Lesson Details ***
There is no "standard formula" to lessons. Each student has their own unique background, needs, and goals. Lessons tend to be somewhat casual but are structured in such a way as to meet the unique requirements of the student.

To accomplish your goals, there are a few requirements and basic expectations that the student and parent must meet.
The first is practice. Students are expected to practice daily for at least the length of their lesson time. This, above all else, is essential to progress. It is also expected that a parent will attend lessons for students who are too young to drive themselves here. It's important for a parent to guide the student's practice time (particularly for younger students) to ensure that the most is gained from it. This is why I ask that a parent observe lessons.
Each student or parent should bring to each lesson a notebook, pencils (with erasers). The notebook will be used to record notes about each lesson, homework, practice advice, etc. Pencils (not pens...nobody's perfect!) are used by composers to record their creations and performers to mark their music. Both of these essential practices are subject to changing thought and must be open to change. So no ink, please!

Performers: It is not necessary to know how to read music at the first lesson for beginners. However, learning to read is required for subsequent lessons and will be a large focus for all non-readers. Lessons are not learned "by ear." A certain amount of theory will be a part of every lesson just as technique and repertoire. Concerning repertoire, it will be selected based on the student's learning needs but also with their input. The main emphasis on performance lessons, however, will be technique and reading. Students should come to the first lesson prepared to discuss their background & goals and the plan of their course of study.
Note: Voice students must be at least 16 years of age.

Composers: Just as with performers, it is not necessary to know how to read music at the first lesson. However, learning to read is required for subsequent lessons. Many young composers have great ideas but can only hear them in their heads or play them on an instrument. Lessons will allow you to obtain the skills to write them down with greater speed, accuracy, and clarity. More advance students will also include exploring a wider range of harmonic languages, advanced notation, instrumentation, orchestration, and aural skills. Students should come to the first lesson with examples of their work, either written, notated, or recorded in a digital format. They should be prepared to discuss their background & goals and the plan of their course of study.

IMPORTANT NOTES:
• To reschedule a lesson, more than one day notice is required.

• Make up lessons must be scheduled before the next regular lesson.

• A make up lesson cannot be scheduled in place of a regular lesson.

• If, for any reason, two 30-minute lessons are scheduled one right after the other, they will be charged as two 30-minute lessons, not one 60 minute lesson which is a different rate.

• If, for any reason, two 45-minute lessons are scheduled one right after the other, they will be charged as two 45-minute lessons, not one 90 minute lesson which is a different rate.

Troy is a really patient instructor. I started these lessons as an adult with no prior musical training. I am enjoying the lessons and despite the fact that I never quite have enough time to practice as I should, sometimes even only having the lesson time with him, I still feel I made some progress. I also enjoy the discussions we have on music theory. I am trained as a scientist and when I read theory I have parse it through my own way of thinking about things. I find that Troy is a really good teacher and able to communicate in a manner that is easy to understand. I highly recommend him!

I have been with Troy almost two years and feel I have accomplished more than I ever thought was possible in that amount of tome. Troy has been patient and knows just the right amount of push to give to keep me advancing without stress.
He is tremendously knowledgeable about many aspects of music composition, theory and technique and is fun to be with during every lesson.

I've had a very positive experience with Troy for vocal training. I'm an adult learner with some classical guitar experience, but I've always been terrified of singing. Since starting lessons many months ago, I've noticed steady improvement in my vocal skills and confidence. Our repertoire so far has included popular songs, broadway, and classical. Troy has a deep and broad understanding of music in general, and our lessons have expanded based on my interests to include ear training, music theory, and writing arrangements. About Matthew
Matthew grew up in Austin, TX attending the Waldorf School and playing music of various styles on saxophone and guitar. For his musical education, he took 8 years of private lessons starting at age 12.

His first teacher was Billy Green aka Wil Greenstreet who currently plays a residency atop the Empire State Building. Green taught guitar and saxophone lessons to Kelly back to back and unleashed a powerful passion for music within. When Green moved to NY, Kelly was refered to Scott McIntosh, a world-traveled saxophonist and arranger from Quebec. For Kelly that was when it got real..

After 5 years of jazz theory and saxophone lessons with McIntosh, Matthew was invited to join a funk band in High School and the band's SXSW showcase at the old Alligator Grill was the beginning of his musical career.

Over the past 12 years Kelly h
as gone on to play with a long list of different ensembles across many state lines.

At age 19 he moved to the San Francisco Bay Area and once there studied under virtuoso saxophonist Joshua Smith and master guitarist Andy Tran.

Kelly found a residency with a local San Jose group and did six months with The Craig Robinson Blues Band while he was gaining music students and slowly transitioning into a full-time music life. He also played with Lowfat an established Bay Area original dance band, was hired by the Darell Patrick Jazz Ensemble for private events and recorded for The Jake Makey Band before moving to Colorado in search of a higher chance of musical success paired with a lower cost of living.

In Fort Collins, CO Matthew sat in as a guest artist regularly with local jazz pianist Mark Sloniker at his residency at Jay's Bistro. Busking paid very well and helped keep the bills paid. Then Kelly could pursue playing 2 instruments in an original jam band The Hot Coal.

While in Fort Collins Kelly gave 6 months of guitar lessons to 2016 Scene Magazine coveree Elise Wunder to help her accomplish her performance goals. Today she travels the world playing her amazing original music.

In 2011 Matthew felt the need to return home. Knowing Austin is the real place to share the music and being from here, he rode his bicycle back here and eventually found the musical projects that he plays in today.

Just had my first lesson with Matt and had to come home and immediately write about it. Matt is a fantastic teacher with loads of music knowledge. He truly has a soul for music and can easily break down complicated musical teachings to a beginner level. He is extremely talented and personable and I cannot wait for my next lesson. I have not felt this excited about playing in along time and a lot of this excitement is due to how much learned in my first session with Matt and how much more I have to look forward to. Matt is a true musician in every since of the word and I highly recommend him to anyone that wants more than just to learn how to play notes but learn to play soulful, beautiful music of any genre.

Ed has a pleasant easy going personality. I've had a couple of teachers who were great players, but lousy teachers. I quit my last teacher because he was completely unprepared and what we did had nothing to do with what we did the previous lesson that I had spent so much time practicing. I got the feeling he thought he was so good he could just wing it. Wrong. I've only had one lesson with Ed, but he seems well prepared and he has his program structured so the student can learn in a progressive manor.

About Albino
Albino was born in Maputo, the capital of Mozambique, a country in southern Africa known for its rich musical and cultural heritage. Fueled by the resourcefulness and determination that have always characterized Mozambicans, he built his first guitar at 16 from a 5-liter can of oil, scrap wood, and strings made out of electrical cords.

Drawn to the sounds of neighborhood street musicians in Maputo, Albino began to play in a number of local bands. As with his home-made guitar, Albino wanted to combine styles and incorporate diverse elements in his music. For his talents to grow, he knew he needed experience new places, cultures, and sounds.

While studying music education and Performance at Universidade Eduardo Mondlane in Mozambique, he heard about the Berklee School of Music in Boston, USA, where he could expand his musical horizons
. Soon after, he was one of the first students to receive a full scholarship to Berklee through the African Scholars program. In 2009, he settled in Boston, Massachusetts.

At Berklee, he was exposed to a variety of influences, but wanted to go deeper into the roots of jazz and expand his knowledge of music. He auditioned and was selected to participate in the Berklee Global Jazz Institute, which is directed by Danilo Perez and the residency teachers, including Joe Lovano John Patitucci, and Terri Lyne Carrington. The Institute emphasizes an artist's original vision in jazz, and has helped Albino find his own unique voice in the art form.

Albino still felt the absence of his own Mozambican traditions in his music. With the help of his mentors, Richard Bona and Lionel Loueke, two of the most prominent African musicians in the United States of America today, he began to bridge that gap.

Today, Albino's music succeeds in combining many disparate parts into an organic whole. It incorporates his musical experiences from Mozambique, the U.S., and many other places around the world, combining rhythmic patterns and musical concepts to create a unique Moz-Jazz sound. He will always continue to combine and capture the energies of different musical traditions to create a unified and original musical style.

Albino's original composition “Mozambique Dance” was recorded by Jazz Revelation Records, a student-run record label at the Berklee College of Music, for the 8th annual album released in 2011. He also recorded “Awusiwana,” his own composition, for the Berklee 2012 summer album. His debut album, also called Mozambique Dance, is to be released in Spring 2013.

Albino is an active musician, and has performed in several countries including Mozambique, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Italy, the U.S., and Mexico. He has also produced and recorded various projects in Mozambique and in the United States. In 2012, he will graduate from Berklee College with a degree in Music Production & Engineering and Performance, and a minor in Acoustics and Electronics.

Albino - I just wanted to say thanks again so much for everything you did for me, I'm having so much fun recording. I just finished up my first track and was able to include guitars, bass, piano, drum and vocals, I can't believe how quickly you taught me all of this stuff. Albino is an amazing teacher and musician. He has the ability to inspire you musically and make you feel very comfortable while doing it. He has taught me many new approaches, tips, and tricks to music theory. At Washington and Lee University, Hillary participated in University Chorus, Chamber Singers, an a cappella group, and performed in musicals on stage. She studied music history, performance, and theory. Hillary earned a Bachelor of Arts in Music, Vocal Production and received the Choral Award upon graduation. She has performed with the St. Louis Symphony Chorus, Dallas Symphony Chorus, and Incarnation church choir.

Hillary also studied piano for seven years during which time she won theory awards and was the star
pupil of her studio. She recently began a piano pedagogy class for continuing education credit.

Students under Hillary's tutelage can expect to gain an appreciation for classic works, learn basic music theory and ear training, and understand proper keyboard or vocal technique. She believes success comes from loving music and working hard to perform well.

Hillary was very good with my 4 year old. He was reluctant at first, but she was able to bring him around and he ended up loving his lesson. He was so happy he called daddy and grandma on the way home to tell them about it.

About Kellyn
Hello! My name is Kellyn B, and I would love to have the honor of being your music teacher! Having played piano for over sixteen years, and having sung for over a little over six years, I am happy to say music has been a huge part of me for most of my life. I have had a passion for it since I was a young child, and it has created this love for music that I hope to instill in every student I have.

I currently am pursuing my Master's degree in Marriage and Family Therapy, while still practicing and teaching music on the side. I taught full time for a few years, but due to a big move up the West Coast, I have not found the same opportunity quite yet that I was once blessed with. Even though I am not pursuing a degree in music anymore, my love for teaching has not kept me away from it.

Prior to ASU, having grown up in Washington State,
I studied at Centralia College under the phenomenal Professor of Music, Donna Huffman, having completed my Associates of Arts with an emphasis in Music Theory.

I have been teaching now on and off for the past seven years, doing in home lessons, online lessons, and teaching in an actual studio. I teach any student from age of four to ninety-nine...anyone can have fun learning music! I emphasize GREATLY on theory, for I believe it is a key building block to understanding music. However, I also emphasize greatly on having FUN! We sometimes forget music is to be enjoyed, not something to stress over, so I try and make every lesson enjoyable and educational, both hand in hand.

From a young age, my musical career started when I got the opportunity to play piano for a local dance studio when I was living in Washington State, called The Dance Academy in Centralia, WA. I played there for just over six years, accompanying in lessons and performing in the dance recitals.

Also at a young age, i got the opportunity to teach young children the basics of the Finale program, where we took a summer to help these children compose their own pieces. I also got the chance to help them learn the program ProTools, a digitally composing program that assisted with their composing and ear training skills.

Prior to these events, I have had gigs as a church accompanist, for a high school theatrical event, where I was the solo accompanist for an entire show, vocal accompanying gigs, performances for schools and churches, etc.

I have performing experience including master classes, adjudications, dance recitals, theatrical performances, church services, private occasions, dinner shows, etc. Anything you can name, I am 99% sure I have played for!

I am confident in my abilities to play, sing, and teach, and have a deep passion to share it with anyone who is willing. I am studying Music Therapy simply because I understand the potential of music, and how much it can touch one's life in such a positive way. The gift of music can not only change your life, but those around you to. I have seen it done in so many circumstances, and it pleases me to think I can help someone reach that someday. So let's learn this crazy thing called "music" together, and have fun with it every step of the way!

I have been literally to 4 youtube teachers and though I have nothing bad to say about any of them, i know that I need a long term teacher that I can see myself growing with as a singer. Our personalities just meshed. She knows how to make one feel comfortable. She is very encouraging to students with zero self confidence like me. I think I have found the teacher I’ve been looking for in Elena! i’m excited to see what she can do to transform my voice. Her resume as well as her reviews( students spoke highly of her character) are what stood out for me out of thousands of teachers online!
