I teach chord and scale theory! How to apply it to your instrument or use it to make your songwriting better!

About Mike
I have taught private guitar, piano, bass and drum lessons since the late 70s in Salt Lake City, where I majored in jazz guitar performance, and since 1980 in Los Angeles. I make the lessons fun. Some of my students have received college scholarships and won cash prizes for music contests. All of them had fun while learning and improving on their instruments.

*** Lesson Details ***
I am very enthusiastic and can teach students how to read. If they do not want to read music, they can learn to play by ear. I can also show them where to put their fingers. During piano lessons, I often accompany students on guitar and suggest a scale for improvisation, so they can play the blues. During drum lessons, I often play bass so they can learn to groove.

*** Travel Equipment ***
They should have their own instrument and a music stand.

*** Spec
ialties ***
I specialize in jazz improvisation on piano and guitar.
I also teach recreational guitar and piano for adults, including classical and blues styles.
I coach bass players and drummers in playing stylistically correct grooves for jazz, rock and latin music.

Jan is a fun and dynamic instructor whose patience and attention to the needs of her students has been instrumental in helping my daughter enjoy and thrive in her voice and piano lessons. While some instructors, in our experience, have been excellent musicians but poor teachers, Jan's style and flexibility make her an ideal person for passing on her knowledge to students, so that they in turn develop their own musical talents and shine. Many thanks, Jan, for your gifts!

About Jonathan
I am a professional musician based in the Tarzana area of Los Angeles, having recorded and performed in a wide variety of styles and projects. I am best known for my work in contemporary music styles that combine classical, jazz and pop sensibilities.

Jonathan is perhaps best known for working with Alan White (Yes, John Lennon, George Harrison, Plastic Ono Band), a member of the band 'White' since 2008, and with a number of music's leading lights, including Mike Keneally (Frank Zappa, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai), Joe Travers (Zappa Plays Zappa, Duran Duran, Billy Idol), and Turn On Red – a jazz fusion collective dedicated to the music of bass legend Jaco Pastorius, featuring such luminaries as Grammy winning guitarist Frank Gambale (Chick Corea/Return to Forever), Mike Keneally, Spencer Campbell (Wynonna/Lee Ann Womack/Kenny Rogers), Ch
ris G (Pamela Moore, Mike Keneally, Nick D'Virgilio).

Additional collaborations between studio and stage include members of Heart, Queensrÿche, Blues Traveler, Zappa Plays Zappa, Marc Bonilla, Kris Meyers (Umphrey's McGee), John Ziegler (Volto), Lee Oskar, Tracy Bonham, Neal Morse, Randy George (Neal Morse Band, Ajalon), Chris Quirarte (Redemption), Dave Meros (Spock's Beard), and Geoffrey Castle.

My background in music education and studies at the University of Oregon range in experiences steeped in the classical tradition (piano performance, composition) to jazz improvisation, songwriting and electronic music.

Lessons are tailored to an individual's abilities, interests and goals. I teach the value of listening as an effective approach to practicing. With the aim of encouraging students to explore their own musical voice, I create personalized road maps with the guidance of musical examples and exercises. The benefits prove to become keys to directly opening doors into the joy of improvising, or simply "making music"!

I have vast depth of knowledge in music theory and can teach it as an individual subject or in conjunction with the learning of an instrument.

About Paul
Hi! My name is Paul and I'd love to share the joy of playing the guitar with you! I have been a professional musician and teacher for over 35 years. I know much about playing the guitar and being an artist. I am passionate about music, which is why lessons with me are so fun. I know how to customize a program for the motivated student that will bring out the potential of the student at all levels. I will give the student a complete and practical program for advancement and help he or she discover their own talents at a pace that works for them. I even on occasion will conduct blues jams and other challenges such as recording and how to do a You Tube video production that will give the student a chance to use their developing skills by themselves and with others. Here is feedback from one of the parents of a student of mine:

"Alex progressed much further with guitar than he did with piano and he actually got to the point where he enjoyed playing on his own. That was a great accomplishment and very impressive to me...you helped instill some discipline and over the course of your instruction, Alex learned a lot. You were always positive with him, even when that was difficult, and I admired that and still appreciate it. I always looked forward on Sunday mornings to hearing the material the two of you were working on and I know he enjoyed his lesson with you."

*** Lesson Details ***
As a teacher, one of my biggest goals is to keep my students motivated and get them enthused about their music and committed to daily practice. I will strive to inspire my students, and ensure that all the while, they are having the time of their life! Practice and commitment are key. Students' curricula vary according to the student's goals and strengths and weaknesses. All students will learn how to play in tune and in time, know their fundamentals, work with music theory and learn how to use written materials. (And they will have fun learning!) More advanced students can learn about blues and jazz improvisation, slide guitar and also participate in blues jams with other students, record, and You Tube video production.

*** Studio Equipment ***
All kinds of guitar and bass guitar equipment and portable hard disc recording equipment for student demo recordings.

*** Travel Equipment ***
Students need a well functioning guitar, music stand, guitar tuner and metronome. Students will also need a notebook to organize written lessons I will hand out.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in blues and jazz mostly, but also have vast knowledge of rock music from it's blues roots to the more modern styles. I also can play in country style, and I play blues slide guitar.

Great Teacher

I played a little guitar throughout my life but was lacking an understanding of how the instrument works. I found myself strumming a few cords here and there but never with focus or improvement. After only three lessons with Paul, I'm now jamming to rock and the blues!Paul was quickly able to access my level of playing and I'm now understanding how the fretboard works and most importantly having lots of fun during lessons and practice. He teaches with passion and doesn't simply open a book but rather instills his lifelong experience and philosophy into lessons. Many can teach the mechanics of guitar but with Paul, you'll also understand the soul.

Paul Rocks !!

I just had my 2nd lesson with Paul and felt inspired to write a review. I have wanted to learn guitar for many, many years now. In the past, I have always gotten frustrated -or bored- and gave up before I ever even learned a chord. Our 1st lesson, Paul started me with some very basic mechanics. It was just the right amount of information to keep me interested and challenged but not so much that I was overwhelmed the 1st week. From just 15 -30 minutes a day of practicing, I have already gained some flexibility in my fingers and am beginning to have a "feel" for the instrument. I have seen more improvement and learned more from Paul and the exercises he has given me in just 2 lessons than I have collectively ever learned from any other teacher in the past or any book or online tutorial. His knowledge of the instrument, as well as music theory, is vast and he knows how to break it down into digestible bits for maximum benefit to the student. So I am not only learning to play guitar, I am also being introduced to music theory in a very easy to understand manner. He is very patient and creates a safe and supportive environment in which to learn comfortably. I am SO glad I found him!!! His way of teaching really works or me ~ I feel hopeful, inspired and motivated for the first time ever in attempting to learn this instrument. Thank you Paul and Thank You Take Lessons !!

Music Theory

About Ray
Hello!

My name is Ray, I'm 30 years old, and was born in Queens, NY. I studied classical music for many years as a youngster at the Aaron Copeland School of Music college preparatory program. During this program I was introduced to Jazz, and around the same time began experimenting with synthesizers. I went on to study Electronic Production & Design at Berklee College of Music in Boston, and quickly became a very sought after studio musician and performer.

I've been successfully teaching many instruments and proficiency levels for 16+ years now, and can say with pride that teaching is my passion, and I anticipate it being a very important part of the rest of my life.

I enjoy reading nonfiction books on science, math, and philosophy, and am building a career as a pop music producer.

*** Lesson Details ***
My music lessons
are unique for three main reasons:

1. I have a very deep understanding of music, sound, and theory, and feel music to be one of my native languages.

2. I have devoted considerable amounts of time and energy studying neuroscience, which has greatly improved my understanding of the learning process.

3. I have been blessed with the tremendous amount of patience necessary to guide a student through the necessary steps it takes to learn at whatever pace is optimal, in order to maximize the efficiency of the learning process for each individual.

*** Equipment ***
Students must have their own instrument, and purchase their own materials (books, etc). From time to time I make my way to a local music shop, and am happy to purchase materials for reimbursement.

*** Specialties ***
Classical music is my background, and what I believe to be the most cognitively and emotionally fulfilling style of music to study and play. That said, I'm also a big fan of pop music (as well as other genres), and encourage students to enjoy learning their favorite songs from the radio.

My understanding of music theory is extremely thorough, and I'm happy to incorporate as much or as little of it as the student's interest dictates, nevertheless maintaining the minimal amount of theory necessary to get the most out of learning music and the instrument.

Thanks for checking out my profile! Please contact me with any additional questions you may have, as well as to inquire about day/time availability. I'll do my best to get back to you right away (usually within a few hours).

of all audiences to groove to and connect with on a deeper and instinctual level.

She has performed at major venues such as the Valley Performing Arts Center, where she conducted a full orchestra for the premiere of her orchestral piece “A Path Unfolds,” and sang with the CSUN Jazz A Band. She has also performed at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza, the Colts Stadium in Indianapolis, the Alamodome, the Georgia Dome, the Hall of Liberty and at Los Angeles Community College where she premiered her latest piece “Emerge” with a jazz combo, which featured legendary drummer Gene Coye, and a six-piece horn section.

Sophia was so kind and helpful. I wanted to get my 7 year old Josh involved in music and figured piano would be a good instrument to learn the basics on, especially since I already have a keyboard at home. Sophia arrived for his first lesson on time and was very polite. I sat in on the lesson and Josh was comfortable for usually being shy around girls. Sophia introduced him to basic technique and showed him some of the cool things a pianist can do. She even asked him what he liked to listen to and what he would want to play in the future, giving him a personal reason to practice. I hope he continues as long time and Sophia definitely makes that seem like a possibility. I cannot recommend her enough!!
