I have been teaching music theory class since 1990.
This class will cover the basics of music theory and will greatly enhance any student who is studying piano, voice or an instrument. Staff, treble and bass clef, lines and spaces, grand staff, ledger lines, note values, time signatures, music vocabulary, sharps and flats, whole and half steps, ear training etc...

About Kelvin
I am a highly organized, outcome-driven and motivated professional musician and educator with solid experience in the classroom. For the past 25 years, I have been employed with Amati music academy and seven years on the faculty of University of St Francis.
I am very comfortable with all aspects of the current music syllabus, including teaching musical concepts (such as duration, pitch, dynamics, tone color, texture and structure) as well as performance, composition. I am fully qualified, with a Bachelor of Education in Music, Double Masters in music performance and education from University of Nottingham.
I am proficient in classical, jazz and Celtic fiddle violin and possess solid skills in piano (grade 8-13) Royal conservatory system.
Throughout my teaching career, I have been driven to help students achieve their very best. I str
ongly believe that music has the power to change lives – to enhance the social, cultural and spiritual lives of people, and serve as a profound medium of personal expression. Professional perform experience: The Chicago, Natalie Cole, Smokey Robinson, Three tours with Moody Blues, YoYo Ma etc....
The most important thing I look for in a student is communication skills, as well as talent. I like to nurture students and help identify their individual strengths, which is a key factor in shaping a musical persona that will make its mark both on and offstage. I do not advocate a uniform technique for all students. Physical differences and learning styles are always taken into consideration. Potential is as important to me as early achievements and experience. My goal is to help students become self-sufficient, discriminating artists. I discuss practice techniques often and develop individualized scale routines. I encourage initiative and expressive musicality as well as precision. Above all, music needs to bring obvious joy to the student, regardless of the difficulties.”

My philosophy is to push you to exceed your expectations and reach your goals while still having fun. I will push you, but gently and show you a lot of effective ways of practicing so that you achieve more in less time. I am big on technique and really believe in the importance of developing a solid technique, which I will help you to acquire.
A strong technique will give you the tools you need to play whatever you want skillfully. With a commanding technique you will be able to focus on making beautiful music.
Are you a singer? Develop your piano/keyboard skills and you can learn to accompany yourself.
I generally divide the lesson into three sections:

Tech

Music Theory

I feel it is important to bring all of these elements into all areas of music education, particularly performance.

What is most important is that you are enjoying your music educational experience. Looking forward to your lessons, enjoying your practice time and having a sense of accomplishment. Jamila has been giving our 7-year-old twin boys piano lessons for six months, and my wife and I are blown away by what an incredible teacher Jamila is. Our boys began never having played a note in their life, and in just six months they play at a level we didn't think they would reach for at least a year and a half or more. Family and friends who hear the boys play are amazed because their own kids took lessons for years and didn't achieve the same level of skill and knowledge of musical theory so early on--and it is 100% thanks to Jamila! She doesn't underestimate kids or teach down to them. She teaches proper technique and theory in a positive, encouraging, yet rigorous way that I imagine most kids will respond very well to. We feel blessed to have found her.

One word..... AMAZING!!!

Before Ms. Jamila was my piano teacher, I had little interest in the piano. My other teacher gave me boring, easy songs, which didn't help. After that, I despised the piano, and thought I never would play it. Then, Ms. Jamila came along. Unlike my other teacher, she asked my interests and what song I really liked. Now, I don't know how I ever hated it. I believe I will go far with her as my teacher. She posts articles on her blog and her website which deepens my understanding of music. I would reccomend her to anyone, because on a scale of 1 to 10, she's infinity!

I teach students how to read music including note reading, rhythm, keys, how the notes relate to the keys on the piano if desired and interpreting the dynamics of a song, all in a creative, fun environment!

About Gerri
My musical theater career has taken me around the globe from Japan, to the Caribbean as well as numerous cities in the U.S. and Europe! A New York City native, I graduated James Madison University's renowned vocal music program, and began work in theatre, playing such roles as Z.’s Favorite in The national tour of “The Will Roger’s Follies, Sandy in “Grease,” and Velma Von Tussle in “Hairspray” regionally, to name a few. I then went on to tour the world with a cabaret show opening for legends such as Nell Carter and Neil Sedaka, and it has been a fantastic journey so far!

Throughout my career, I have had the opportunity to sing most genres of music from gospel to pop and have a passion for encouraging students in their talents, singing the styles of music they love! I believe we are all so very unique, and there is a reason we are dr
awn to certain types of music over others, so let's work on what we love!

As an actor I also have a strong background in improv comedy, having studied at "The Groundlings," and "The Second City." I then performed professionally with an improv ensemble in NYC called "The Grownups Playground" and can teach a myriad of improv comedy games, selected from my vast experience and cater the games to the students abilities. I believe developing your gifts should be fun!

*** Lesson Details ***
My personality is definitely laid back creating a fun atmosphere for lessons. That said, I believe the real fun begins when we cultivate our talents and get opportunities to sing our hearts out!

Lessons usually begin with loosening everything up, as relaxation is imperative to avoiding strain on the voice. Getting loose can be fun and a chance to act silly! Next we move onto learning proper breathing techniques, and practicing exercises that will develop the muscles necessary to produce the most sound while protecting the voice from damage. From there we study ways to warm up the vocal chords. The voice is a muscle and I have found the expression, "Use it or you lose it!" to hold true. Therefore, warming up is just as important as warming up your legs to run track!

The rest of our lesson I like to focus on music selections. We usually watch examples of artists performing the student's choice of music, and then begin either learning the song, or improving a song already learned. Down the road, when songs are performance ready, we will learn proper microphone technique, and try out our songs on mic! Get ready to belt it out!

For acting lessons, I always begin with a few improv warm-ups, and from there move on to the student's choice of monolgue, scene-study or my favorite more improv comedy games!

Lastly, I believe strongly in positivity and creating a comfortable environment for lessons. Sometimes life wears us down, so c'mon in for an uplifting inspiring, encouraging lesson. If this sounds like the type of voice lesson you are looking for, I would love to meet you, and help you reach for your dreams!

*** Specialties ***
Vocally, I specialize in pop, musical theatre, standards, and jazz, all of which I have performed and taught professionally. Acting wise, I am an experienced improviser, and have much experience teaching improv based on philosophies learned at "The Second City."

Lessons in music theory are available to help both beginners and intermediate students have a better understanding of how chords, chord voicings, scales, modes, and keys come into play for guitar players.

About Aldo
Aldo is a San Diego native with over 9 years of professional performing, and teaching experience. His musical path started at a young age in middle school and was initially self-taught on guitar. Throughout his early years he learned as much as he could on his own to be able to perform and did so and began performing in bands at the age of 18. Once he began his performing career, he also began studying music at Mesa College. During his years in school, he studied Music Theory as well as Classical Guitar under the guidance of George Svoboda and Jude Weirmier. As he was studying music and performing, he wanted to pass on his knowledge to others to help prepare others for the "real world" of musicianship. Aldo started his teaching career at Music Central at the age of 20 and was offering lessons to students of all ages, from beginners to ear
ly intermediate. To this day, Aldo continues to perform locally around San Diego in several bands as well as he runs his own independent record label to help promote other local musicians. He has never stopped teaching throughout the years as it is has been and always will be a true passion for him. Aldo is completely immersed in music on a daily basis by being an active musician, teacher, mentor, and overall lover of music. Aldo's knowledge of guitar touches every genre and style imaginable, from Bach to rock, jazz, metal, you name it! His goal is make you succeed and excel at your instrument. In his spare time, Aldo enjoys skateboarding.

*** Lesson Details ***
My lesson plan is very simple. First of all, it revolves all around you and what you want to do with guitar. It doesn't matter if you want to master your skills before you hit the recording studio, prepare for the stage, learn the song you have always wanted to play, or just learn the instrument because it has always been your dream. I can help you. My approach is very relaxed and encouraging and I will always provide feedback to make sure you are going to hit your goals. After determining your goals, I will cater your lessons to help you reach them. Students who would like to read music will go through method books and supplemental material. Those who would like to start playing right away will start off with chords, understanding charts, counting rhythm, learning tablature, and reading simple sheet music. Intermediate to advance students can expect to focus on areas where they need help. New techniques can introduced or improved such as sweep arpeggios, tapping, speed picking, and performance tips. For Classical Guitar, I can help students from a beginning level to an early intermediate level. I will help them work on their sight reading and technique along the way. My classical guitar lessons will have a strong emphasis on the performance of the pieces assigned.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Aldo's studio is fully equipped with practice and performance amplifiers. A spare electric guitar is available for students if they happen to forget theirs. Recording equipment, drums, bass guitar, and bass amp is also available for accompaniment. Repair and maintenance tools are also available for quick adjustments or restringing a guitar.

*** Specialties ***
rock, pop, blues, metal, classical, speed picking, finger picking

Aldo is the best guitar instructor I have ever had

Now granted, I haven't had too many. Half a dozen at most. But let's be real, here. Most guitar instructors are terrible. They don't have any kind of cohesive lesson plan, or they show up to the lesson high, or they spend the whole half hour "showing you what you will eventually be able to do" by jamming on their own, while you watch.

Not Aldo.

Aldo is like the quintessential guitar instructor. He shows up on time. He has lessons prepped, including printed AND digital sheet music (courtesy of an excellent iPad app). He carefully monitors your progress and updates the lesson plan accordingly.

But my absolute favorite thing about taking guitar lessons from Aldo is that he teaches you EVERYTHING. Technique, Chops, Chords, Music Theory, Improvisation, he knows it all. Also, literally any song you bring in to him, asking him to learn how to play, he will be able to learn in 5 minutes flat and teach you, at least the basics, in half an hour.

I was a student of Aldo's for 2 years, and in that time my skill as guitarist grew by leaps and bounds, and I looked forward to Thursdays at 5:30 more than any other time of the week. I seriously cannot recommend him enough, and I hope you get to take a lesson from him soon.

What's the difference between Music and Sound? Maybe you want to know the rules of composition, the theory, form and analysis of music; or maybe you just want to do things by ear. Either way, I can help you understand the complexities and simple things about the building blocks of music and aid you in finding the song in you.

About Kimberly
I grew up in a household of 9 where music was always center stage. We would sing as a family in different venues and were often called the VonTrapp family. I have enjoyed singing and performing from a young age. I began studying flute at age 8, after scoring highest in the harmony listening exam and began formal violin lessons at the age of 9. I studied all genres including, fiddle, classical, musical theater and 20th century. I have continued to study violin since then and have performed in many orchestras and small groups, such as Honor Orchestra, the Paradise Symphony, the Yuba College Orchestra, Yuba-Sutter Oratorio Society Orchestra and more. I have been concert master and first stand in many of these. I have also soloed in many and have been the first violinist in quartets for countless weddings and other events. I have also played
in numerous pit orchestras for musicals.
I have been in choirs and soloing since I can remember. I have performed and soloed in choirs such as the Yuba-Sutter Oratorio Society, CSUS Chamber Choir, the CSUS Women's Choir and more. I have toured to Victoria, Montreal, Ottowa, Oregon and Washington. I have also been in opera productions such as The Magic Flute, Peleas and Melisande and Die Fledermaus (The Bat) with CSUS Opera. I am a recent recipient of the Saturday Club Scholarship, a prestigious award, and have won many competitions (some repeatedly) both vocally and with violin, such as the Tri-County Competition, Young Artist Competitions, and the California Soloist and Ensemble Competitions. Additionally, I have performed musical theater repertoire and have performed as lead in musicals such as Beauty and the Beast and Into the Woods. I have also soloed repeatedly with the Yuba College jazz band and at churches all around.
I have earned my Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from CSU Sacramento. I have my Associates Degrees in both Music and Early Childhood Education from Yuba College. Additionally, I have obtained my certificate of completion of training from Music Together, an organization which trains teachers to teach Basic Music Competence (both in tonality and meter), and am currently teaching this curriculum.
I have been teaching music privately for over ten years to all ages, genders and abilities. Additionally, I have taught ages 0-5 years in a preschool setting for 7 years and am extremely familiar with developmentally appropriate practices for both preschool and school age, as I am a site supervisor at a child development center with a preschool and after school program. I have had many adult students as well and encourage adults to enrich their lives with music at any age! Additionally, I have experience teaching parent child classes and am familiar with how to teach to the particular needs of each family and student.
I'm extremely excited and looking forward to growing as a professional, both teaching and performing, in both the areas of violin and voice and to be instrumental in your musical growth too; I can't wait to share my passion with you and to ignite your passion for music too!

*** Lesson Details ***
I have been teaching since 2002 and have loved every minute of it! I teach all ages. I tailor my style of teaching to each student's goals and to what works for you. If you want to learn Taylor Swift music, I won't be giving you arias. On the other hand, if you wish to study classically, I have repertoire appropriate for you. I teach fiddle, classical, orchestral, 20th century and more for violin students and have experience with jazz, classical, musical theater, pop, religious, spiritual, choral, 20th century and more vocally.
For violin students, I use the Suzuki method as a pushing off point, a tried and true method used in many countries across the world, though I have other repertoire including fiddle, orchestra, small ensemble, solo, concertos, Christmas, and more. For vocalist, I start with the book, Adventures in Singing. I also have warm ups and exercises to keep you vocally healthy. I will teach you anything you want to learn! I also teach how to read music, theory and harmony, depending on your interest and tailored to your current skill level.
I am encouraging and knowledgeable. I will meet you at your current level, be that beginner, intermediate, or advanced. My students can look forward to being encouraged and growing through their time with me. I don't have preset ideas about where you should be in 3-6 months, nor do I have a one size fits all teaching style. Instead, I will work with you individually so that you will become the best musician you can be, meet your goals, and increase your enjoyment and appreciation for music.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Lessons in open space, upright piano, digital piano, music stands, metronome, violins available for rent, music, staff paper and computer

*** Travel Equipment ***
I expect my students to provide the instrument with all of it's accessories (ie shoulder rest, rosin, bow and case) along with the appropriate level Suzuki book. I have instruments available for rent. My voice students should bring their own music also. I have a piano in my studio along with music stands. Of course, every student must have a pencil and come ready to have fun learning! :)

*** Specialties ***
Suzuki, solfege, art songs and arias, reading music, fiddle, classical, healthy vocal technique and musical theater. I am very good at working with any age.

Learn the basic harmonic structures western-music has used since it's first real display in post-renaissance polyphonic music. Learn the basics and quickly see its usage all the way up to todays top 40 and everything in between. Not all theory needs writing! How do you develop a chord? Why do some chords work better than others? How do I know what key to solo in? how do I learn to solo? How do I get better at writing music and generating musical ideas?

About Aidan
Hi, my name is Aidan. I'm a composer, performer, guitar instructor and band leader. I teach at my apartment in Cambridge and can drive within the Cambridge area.

I am a Hampshire College music program graduate who has taught students of various ages, skills, and music preferences. I play guitar in Freddy & the Yetis, a touring band out of New England and i'm currently living Cambridge this year to study with one of Berklee's most prominent professors. Ive played hundreds of gigs in my life.

My goal with students is to encourage both a love of music and the guitar as an instrument for personal expression. I want to see my students playing the music they enjoy as soon as possible. Every student is treated as an individual. Their needs, abilities and learning style are taken into consideration. I use this information to design a stude
nt specific curriculum. The experience should be fun and educational for the student.

Various openings 9am - 10pm
Prices are negotiable depending on location

I encourage students to take one or two lessons per week at a regularly scheduled time. References are available.

"Aidan has been teaching my 12-year old son guitar for the last year. He started with the basics in technique and later worked with him on music appreciation. My son really enjoyed his easy-going and attentive nature and attitude. Aidan was always punctual and respectful of our schedule. I feel my son learned a lot about music and he enjoyed working with Aidan."

Aidan is a terrific teacher!! I played professionally over 35 years ago and have not played at all since. At this point I could not play ANYTHING. He took me back through the basics and got me thinking the way I did when I was in my teens. Clearly he has the technical aspect of both music and teaching down - but what made him a great teacher to me is his love of music and guitar. Reminded me of why I loved it in the first place. Although we didn't match up on style perfectly - he embraced the music that I loved and got me back up and running - could not give him a higher recommendation!!

The goal of my music theory lessons is to help students understand the mechanics of music. From the basics of reading music, to analyzing Bach chorales, and the Lydian Chromatic Concept, I can take students through a range of topics. Lessons will be tailored to each student's interests and needs.

About Hayden
I am a professional trombonist, composer, arranger, and teacher in South Florida. I graduated from the University of Miami with a Masters Degree in Studio Music and Jazz Trombone Performance and received a Bachelor of Music from the University of North Texas in Jazz Trombone Performance.

The goal of my lessons is to help students enjoy music. Through listening, singing, clapping, and playing, I take students through material that we both like and help them expand their abilities and understanding. I cater my material to each person's needs while including techniques to improve fundamentals.

As a professional musician, I perform a huge variety of styles for many occasions. As a college student, I studied traditional and modern jazz styles as well as Afro-Cuban and Brazilain genres. Between degrees, I performed on the cruise ships
of Royal Caribbean and Celebrity Cruise Lines around the world for thousands of guests. During this time, I developed an understanding of classic Motown, Pop, R&B, Broadway Musical, and Rock styles. I was a member of the award-winning Bad Cactus Brass Band in my hometown of Phoenix, AZ and a member of the Los Wedos Salsa band in Denton, TX. I use all this experience to expose students to a wide variety of musical possibilities and techniques to further their musical journey.

Hayden has been teaching private Trombone lessons to my 13th year old son for over a year now. Hayden is organized and reliable; he is always on time, and has helped my son sound great. Hayden is passionate about Jazz, and knowledgeable. My son enjoys having a teacher that is as passionate as he is, and younger that the usual Trombone teachers we have found. :-)
Hayden has prepared my son for All State competitions, and for many concerts with his school and/or the jazz band my son performs outside of school. I recommend Hayden 100%!!!
