Hi my name is Carmen. I have been teaching music for 10 years to all ages and levels. I make sure my students are able to play a song in the first lesson and customize the lesson to their own goals. I have experince playing in orchestras, trios, quartets, rock and alternative bands as well as teaching classical cello. I have knowledge of many different methods but tailor curriculm based on the students goals. My students have played in orchestras, symphonies, jazz trios and bands

About Carmen
Carmen has been teaching music for 10 years to children and adults, from age 4 to 50. She is able to teach many genres of music to all levels of musicianship, whether beginner or advanced, whether they want to learn Mozart or Coldplay, Aretha Franklin or Joni Mitchell . Her style of teaching utilizes the classical approach of theory and sight reading, but MOST IMPORTANTLY allows the student to explore the instrument freely while also achieving good musicianship. Having fun while honing the craft is the way to an enduring love of playing and is a principle she always uses in her lessons.

Carmen has a special gift with very young children; she is able to keep children interested, engaged, inspired and challenged. She has a patience with children that is extraordinary because she believes strongly in the ability of music to enrich child
ren's lives in all areas and seeks to cultivate that within the child.

Adults also find it easy to learn from Carmen's teaching approach. Her ability to approach a students challenges with a multitude of learning techniques has been useful in helping students succeed. She teaches skills and techniques for practicing that are useful for musicians through out their lifetime. Carmen also knows exactly what it takes to make a student a professional who is ready for studio session work, live band performances, live improvisations, auditions or creating their own music. She understands the desire and drive behind wanting to create with music and emphasizes certain key aspects that can make musicians proficient in any genre when practiced

Education

Carmen comes from a long family lineage of musicians and artists. Always being exposed to classical music and opera since birth, Carmen was in awe of the power of the human voice through opera. At 8 she began to study the art form and teach herself music. She started studying with teachers at age 11. After learning voice, piano and cello followed. While studying classical techniques, she also taught herself other genres of music which enabled her to play, record and perform with musicians of almost every genre by 19.

Carmen has been taught and trained by many professional working musicians of impressive musical carrer heights Her former opera/ vocal coach Shonie Lebie attended The Julliard School on a full scholarship before going on to The Metropolitan Opera House. Piano teacher Shoshana Ben Horin, a graduate of Prague Conservatory of Music and concert pianist, toured all of Europe before instructing Carmen in piano. Carmen has learned cello and other string instruments from professional working musicians here in Los Angeles.

Experience

Carmen is a current working session musician, songwriter and performer in Los Angeles. She has performed and recorded with musicians from The Gap Band, Guns n' Roses, Whitney Houston, Vanessa Hudgens, Hayden Panettiere, etc. She was born and raised in Los Angeles.

I have been playing violin since the age of 6. One day I had to make the difficult decision choosing between violin and piano, because both instruments are very dear to me. I chose violin as my primary instrument for its lyrical qualities and closeness to human voice. At the age of 13 I won the Saint Petersburg Violin Competition and performed with the Saint Petersburg Philharmonic.
I am excited to share my love for this instrument with my students no matter what age they are. I see each person as an individual who has their own artistic voice and I will help you to further develop it.
I have won Gartoff International Violin Competition, Freiburg International Violin Competition, Dalhousie Solo Competition, Halifax Rose Bowl, Roosevelt Violin Competition and most recently competed in Schoenfeld International String Competition in Harbin, China, where my quartet placed 3rd. Recently I performed the Brahms Violin Concerto in the Symphony Centre downtown Chicago with Roosevelt ...

About Artem
Hello! My name is Artem and I'm 24 years old. I'm a freelance musician, composer and pedagogue.
I am passionate about teaching because I believe education and willingness to learn is an extremely important factor for personal development and success.
I was born and raised in Saint Petersburg, Russia and underwent intensive training in voice, violin, composition and piano. After winning the Frieburg Intenational Violin Competition in 2010, I was offered a full scholarship to study music at Dalhousie University at the age of sixteen. After moving to Canada I went through a 9-month intensive english learning program, so I know first hand how difficult it can be to learn a new language. This experience helped me understand the struggles that any ESL student goes through and discover new ways to teach my first language to others.

Nothing beats learning from a native speaker, especially one as knowledgeable and professional as Artem. Russian is his native language, but you would never have guessed it since his English is impeccable. He takes difficult concepts and makes them simple to understand. He walks with you each step of the way, meeting you at your level and guiding you to fluency. He understands the best way you learn and adapts to your learning needs and situation. Artem will help you attain native pronunciation and will go out of his way to provide extra help and materials. I've been amazed how much I have gained from lessons with him. Highly recommended. Wonderful teacher.

Be a violin virtuoso!

About Jacqueline
Hello future students! I've been playing violin for 20 of my 25 years of age and teaching for 8 years. I believe that the most important part of learning the violin is having fun and building a passion for music.

In my lessons we will focus on proper violin technique, music theory and most importantly (and fun!) practical application. In practical application, the student chooses what he/she would like to work on, whether it be Mozart or The Chainsmokers or the Moana score, and we learn it together!

I am also proficient in music production/engineering which means that my students can professionally record themselves in my home studio.

If this sounds like fun to you - let's get started! :)

Teaching method:

I have a three pronged approach to my teaching method: technique, music theory and practical application. However, I
believe the most important part of any teaching plan is molding it to fit the student’s needs, so the following methods are entirely flexible.

TECHNIQUE
For technique, we start with simple scales to work on bowing and intonation. When this becomes easy for the student, we move on to more complex key signatures and minor scales, eventually moving into 2 octaves and learning the left hand positions. For intermediate students who want to excel in classical music, we will work on etudes as well as scales.

MUSIC THEORY
I teach music theory as it applies to what the student is currently playing so as not to cause confusion. For example, if the student is learning to play a new piece with a more complex rhythm, we will go over time signatures, how many beats each note gets and so on. I always make flashcards for students so they can “practice” music theory when I’m not there, especially for students who are just learning to read music.

PRACTICAL APPLICATION
In practical application, the student can apply what they learn about technique and music theory to a fun song. I start with the Suzuki books because I like the way they’re structured in terms of technique, and because I love the repertoire. Suzuki books generally come with a CD containing piano accompaniment tracks, which I’ve found students love to play with. Finally, I let the student pick a song of their choice and we learn it together. If the student isn’t enjoying Suzuki, we focus more on the student’s song of choice.

Thanks to Jacqueline, I have been able to pick up the violin again (after not playing for many years) and build back my technique reasonably quickly. She has an expansive library of musical exercises and songs that are perfect for making your practicing more efficient and your playing sound better. Over the last two years I’ve started to see her as less of a violin teacher and more of a violin guru. I high recommend her to any new/old violin student.

The teacher was amazing. My 8 year old kept telling me she didn't want to play violin anymore. I figured it was because of the instructor and I was right. Phoebe was on time, professional, educated, and super fun. I literally never heard my daughter play so smoothly. And when she left my girl gave her two thumbs up and did cartwheels and said she couldn't wait for her next lesson. We made the best choice with Phoebe. She's a really sweet girl and is extremely patient. Throughly satisfied and look forward to a million more fruitful learning experiences :)

Much of my methods are derived from my doctoral dissertation studies in the field of Sports Psychology. I apply my teaching methods to develop and increase control of muscular and mental functions, accuracy, precision, discipline, mental awareness and overall coordination in violin performance. I am eager to share my knowledge and experience in sports psychology and to emphasize the general psychological benefits and contribution to human enrichment.

My students earn numerous accolades, such as Concertmaster and title positions in the: Colburn Chamber and Los Angeles Youth Orchestras, Santa Monica High School Chamber Orchestra, Idyllwild Music Festival Symphony and Chamber Orchestras, Interlochen Music Festival, Honor Orchestra of America, and Santa Monica High School Symphony and Chamber Orchestra, Palisades High School Symphony; Grand Prize in the Fifth International Colibri Music Competition, Westside Committee of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Student Scholarships and ...

About Dimitry
My teaching principles are based on outlining the advantageous mental and physical practice techniques revealed through research in Sports Psychology. These methods help my students strategically overcome the numerous psychological obstacles in order to develop a consistently high level of performance.

I share with students my Sports Psychology research that focuses on common triggers for performance anxiety and stage fright. By assessing the students’ performances, I design an applicable daily practice plan which gears to establish better control over the physical and psychological symptoms known to negatively impact performance. Applying these principles also helps in the development of increased control of muscular and mental functions, accuracy, precision, discipline, mental awareness and overall coordination. By incorporating kn
owledge of Sports Psychology in my lessons, I hope to educate about the existing relationship between mental process and physical execution and the impact one has on the other.

For professional athletes and musicians, performing under pressure is an inescapable element of their careers. Given the current levels of performance excellence and the consequent fierceness of competition, consistency in performance quality is indispensible in attaining the degree of professionalism. This implied link between musical and athletic disciplines is a logical one. Similarly to athletes, musicians must achieve high levels of technical skill, efficient movement patterns, acute focus, composure and extreme concentration, all while maintaining a consistently high level of performance.

Musicians ‘play’ music as athletes ‘play’ sports. Therefore, like sports, a musical performance is a physical activity with extreme demands on technical facility, training ethics, discipline, deliberate practice, structure, dedication, determination, motivation and inspiration. Like sports, it is a form of self-expression, performed in front of an audience and demanding astounding mastery of the human mind and body. Both performance practices provide the performer with opportunities for excellence, though the journey may bring forth intense pressures, challenges, anxieties, fears and psychological phobias. Adapting the methods and principles developed by research in sports psychology, affords tremendous advantage in a musician’s constant desire to elevate, not only the quality, but also the consistency of quality in their performance.

Dr. Olevsky is inherently able to discern between problems related to technique, versus those associated with internal barriers. He infuses his knowledge of sports psychology into his teaching, giving him the unique ability to address the mental roadblocks that prevent students from unlocking their maximum potential. Dr. Olevsky takes the time during lessons to advise students on how to overcome such barriers, providing them with guidance on how to consistently achieve peak performance. Dr. Olevsky not only possesses the extensive knowledge in musical theory and practice required for teaching students at the university level, but also the personality and temperament to mentor young musicians. Due to his genuine character, quick-witted humor, and sense of self-discipline, he is both well liked and respected by students. Needless to say, Dr. Olevsky is an exceptional violin instructor whom I hold in the highest regard.

Dimitry displays an exceptional talent and contagious enthusiasm for teaching. He consistently brings the same energy to each and every single one of his lessons. Rather than sitting in a chair and throwing suggestions out for an hour, he is always on his feet interacting with his students.I have noticed how Dimitry constantly polishes his own playing. He exhibits the discipline to relentlessly improve even after reaching the most advanced level of his craft. On multiple occasions, I have arrived minutes late to lessons only to see him taking advantage of every possible minute to work on his own technique and repertoire. I view this as one of the keys to his effective teaching. As a result of his persistent self-improvement and reflection, his advice to his students precisely reflects his own work ethic as a violinist. His dedication gives him an unparalleled ability to comprehend his students’ struggles, and ultimately relate them to his own experiences as a performer . As a result of my studies with Dimitry, my playing has reached heights that I never believed to be possible. My proudest and most exciting moments have come as a result of my opportunities in classical music, and I owe them all to Dimitry.

"I look forward to lessons every week. In these 10 months, I have gained confidence in my ability to learn the violin. I am a beginner (hobbyist) and I feel I learned more in the first four months as Dr. Olevsky's student than I would have learned in a year with any other teacher. Dimitry's teaching style is very concise and technical. From the very first lesson to present, he strongly focuses on form, technique and efficiency in learning, which is ultimately making all the difference in my progress. In hand with technique, Dimitry is exceptional at using theory, analogies and stories to help work through each step of the learning process. He is also very insightful and willing to share stories, history, and/or any information related to his experiences as a musician...which I enjoy hearing. I find Dimitry to not only be a fantastic teacher, but a patient, kind, and funny person who is passionate about what he does and what I am there to learn. He has high standards and exp ects exceptional effort from me as a student..which is a lot of hard work. In return; however, I have unlimited access to his wealth of knowledge and experience...and sometimes I get to just listen to him play the pieces I am learning which is worth all of the effort in and of itself. So beautiful"
