About Thomas
Thomas J. W. is an active music teacher, composer, adjudicator, and clinician in the greater Philadelphia area. He has over fifteen years experience as a concert band director, marching band director, jazz improvisation instructor, choral director, private instructor, and marching drill writer. His directing career has included small rural band programs, small metro programs, large high-achieving suburban programs, and non-profit youth bands. In addition to his band compositions, he also has over forty unpublished vocal arrangements to his credit, most written for use with collegiate men's a cappella groups. Thomas taught over 600 online and local private music lessons in 2016.

Thomas has a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education from The Pennsylvania State University. He holds a teaching certificate in the states of Pennsylvania
and New Jersey and has taught at the secondary level in both states. In addition to both instrumental and choral ensembles at Penn State, Thomas was a student leader in the Penn State Blue Band and a member of the brass section of the Cadets of Bergen County Drum and Bugle Corps in 1993 and 1994. He served as an Associate Director of the Warren Junior Military Band of Youngstown, Ohio from 1995 to 2005. He also served as a visual staff member for the renowned North Penn Marching Knights of Lansdale, PA for one season in 2004.

He is a current adjudicator with Drum Corps International and Cavalcade of Bands. He is a member of MENC, PMEA, NJMEA, ASCAP, CASA, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, and the National Band Association. He appeared in the Marquis Who's Who Among American Educators in 2004 and 2005, an honor rarely bestowed upon teachers, as students who appear in the Who's Who Among American High School Students must nominate them. He currently is a music teacher at the Center for Performing and Fine Arts of the PA Leadership Charter School in West Chester, PA and resides in Downingtown, PA with his wife and two sons.

Thomas will happily work with students on the autism spectrum or students with ADD.

*** Lesson Details ***
My lessons are tailored to the needs and interests of each student. If a student is involved in school music ensembles, we will work with their lesson books from school in addition to material outside of the books, including SmartMusic, Noteflight, and teacher-created materials. We will focus on building proper tone production and individual technique - something that often is difficult to learn in a large ensemble setting.

I am capable of starting a beginner student on any band instrument including percussion, any classical string instrument (violin, viola, cello, string bass), and piano. I can begin a student on drum set and work with them through their first method book, but I would then recommend they find a specialized drum set teacher after a period of six to twelve months.

For advanced students, I work from selected conservatory etude books on developing advanced skills and can work with students on audition pieces for honors bands/orchestras or college auditions.

My lessons are a half-hour once a week, with the option of working for 45 minutes or 60 minutes.

Having attended Westminster Choir College and taken music theory based classes in highschool, I have had experience with everything from basic theory to music analysis to ear training and more. I have taken practical theory classes and music history/world music classes which have contributed to my understanding of the patterns in and characteristics of a wide variety of musical genres. At Drexel University, as a music therapy masters student, I was expected to improvise and transpose at a moments notice. These experiences have convinced me that it is in the musician's best interests to have a strong foundation of theory knowledge, and I emphasize theory approaches to understanding music in voice, and particularly piano lessons, as I believe this will help the student to better predict and understand an underlying musical structure to a song, helping with his or her reading fluency.

-Young kids in voice can expect their lessons to be fun and educational including using visual tools like scarves and shakers, and imaginative play to learn vocal techniques needed to sing on pitch and with proper breathe control.

-Children in piano lessons will learn music theory and piano technique through simple songwriting exercises, theory games, visual tools and more. They will learn about composer's lives and musical styles, providing them with a well-rounded lesson experience.

-Older children and adult singers can expect to learn about their vocal anatomy in order to better control of their voice and become independent during practice sessions at home. They will learn how to improve breathe control, posture and diction. Time during lessons will also be dedicated to developing stage presence and discussing vocal health. Singers will be allowed to select repertoire from the genre of their choice. They can also learn how to harmonize and sight-sing in lessons if they would like.

-I teach beginning guitar students and help them learn how to play with proper technique and accompany themselves when singing. These students learn to read staff and tab and shape different chords on the guitar. I use theory games and visual tools for kids to make lessons fun

-Music theory/composition students will be taught how to read and write music. Students will be invited to improvise on the piano and record their improvisations.They will be taught how to sight-sing in order to learn how to notate any melodies in their head
They will learn how music has changed and been influenced throughout history. They will learn how to read lead sheets and use stylistic invariants in their playing. They will be provided with honest feedback and constructive help on their compositions.They will learn how the human brain processes music and how best to capitalize upon this process for the greatest audience appeal.

About me!

I am a Westminster Choir College '11 Alum  who graduated with a Bachelor's of Arts in Music, summa cum laude. I also have my master's degree in music therapy from Drexel University. I am also a Member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing and a  Board Certified Music Therapist. During my time at school I performed at Carnegie Hall and the Kimmel Center, and did music therapy work with older adults, as well as disadvantaged children and parents.

I also have my own parent/child music class I host every Thursday September-May. It's never to early to start a music education!

I have been teaching for over four years and now have a studio of more than 70 happy students. Teaching music is my passion, and I love seeing students grow!

I often draw upon my experience from my master's degree in music therapy, which taught me that music can have a profound effect on the human brain and upon cognitive development.  My skills as a music therapist allow me to better understand a student's cognitive strengths and areas for improvement, and to develop individualized teaching strategies which utilize student strengths.

My studios are equipped with keyboard, guitar or piano, as well as a sizable repertoire of classical, broadway and popular music. ' I also have a mirror for voice students to see how their body is moving when singing and visual tools for students like scarves, whiteboard, markers, crayons...ect. I teach all styles of music and all levels of ability

As I look back at my life, I see that music was my constant companion. My passion for music, and more specifically for the guitar, goes back to the time when, as a ten year old I received a guitar for my birthday. The sound of the instrument truly struck a chord in my heart and I learned to respect and love the instrument to the point that I thought of it almost as a companion, as something alive or, more exactly, as something my fingers could make come alive. At first I wanted to play rock and popular music, but eventually I switched to classical. When I entered the realm of classical music, a whole new world opened up for me -- new feelings, new emotions, and new challenges.
My enthusiasm for music continued, and beginning in 1990 I attended the Hartt School of Music, part of
the University of Hartford. I knew, of course, that the education of a musician is truly never finished, and between 1995 and 1997, I took Master Jazz Classes in New York City, under the direction of Dennis Cinelli, the international guitar player and soloist.
While in Florida, I attended classes at Florida International University. Between 2000 and 2003 I played in an orchestra on board the ships of the Royal Caribbean Cruise Line.
All along the way I have been teaching the guitar at just about every level, an activity that I always enjoyed but admittedly is somewhat limiting. Teaching brings us back to the basics, but for a musician performing is what makes us grow professionally and satisfy us emotionally.

I really like Mike.

First off - he is SUPER punctual. The one time he was running late I even got a timely text message warning.

Second - he is very good at diagnosing issues and providing the right exercise/coaching.

Third - he is very flexible. I feel him supporting my music choices... not imposing his still or preferences.

And finally - he seems to me (I'm not good enough to judge) VERY skilled as a player... able to deconstruct songs, able to transpose quickly, able to find alternative strumming patterns.

I really feel very good about recommending him.

My name is Olivier Huebscher. I am a horn player who received my MM in Horn Performance from Indiana University and am currently working on my DM. I was born in Switzerland in 1989, and have performed in wide variety of cultures and venues, from television soundtrack recording in Thailand, to full opera productions. Currently finishing my Doctorate at the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University, I am equally comfortable performing in studio recordings, opera pits or symphonic stages. In addition to being a member of Santa Monica Symphony, American Youth Symphony, Columbus Philharmonic and Redlands Symphony, I am a dedicated chamber musician, performing with Volante Winds as well as recording Mahler’s Symphony No 9 with the Kammermahler ensemble.
I have performed with American Youth Symphony, Redlands Symphony Orchestra and Columbus
Philharmonic as well as being a finalist for Macau Symphony and semi-finalist for New World Symphony. I have also performed in sections with Dale Clevenger, Jeff Nelsen and Elizabeth Freimuth. My teaching style relies on simplifying breathing and focusing on achieving the best possible musical results. I take into account each student's goals and desires and tailor lessons to get the end result they want. Welcome! I'm a California-based singer, I am classically trained in voice and violin from a former Philharmonic performer. I also started my high school ukulele club in 2012 that is still going strong today. I was in Select Choir all years in high school, which was an audition-only class. I was also in Marching Band and was the vocalist for the school Jazz Band. I have performed for over 8,000 people at the Camp Pendleton Mud Run Race Series over 12 times (12 races throughout 2 years). I have sung for each game of a season of minor league baseball in Palm Springs, California. I teach based on my students desire to learn. I will teach basic theory unless the student wants more than basic theory. The first lesson is when I will establish where the student is and how to teach them. As the son of a preacher, I began music by toying with the musical instruments in my home, which transpired me to play for my father's church at the age of 14.

They say that "reading is fundamental," and we all sure get a step up in the world from being literate, and learning to write and to read.... But before we learn to read, we need to know our ABC's, and music has ITs own set of basic ABC's! Once you know these, everything in music becomes a lot more understandable and easy to work with - as we begin forming the words and sentences of music, with our musical ABC's!

IT's not rocket science, and IT's not differential calculus.... IT really is as easy as ABC and 1, 2, 3! :-)

I have been singing and playing the piano since I was a young child. I have participated in Broadway trainings in New York, have done classical voice and opera training, and for the last four years in college have studied jazz voice. I am an arranger and teacher of music theory. I have experience working with children in music and theater programs. I also have worked as a cantor at a church where the congregation is primarily comprised of senior citizens.

Prior to my graduation, I was in the top two vocal ensembles at California State University, Long Beach. For the past two summers I had the honor of performing internationally with the CSULB Chamber Choir. We were invited to sing at the 2016 Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod. This experience culminated in my choir winning the esteemed title of Choir of the World. In the summ
er of 2017, we returned to Europe and won the prestigious choral competition in Spittal, Austria. As a jazz voice student I was a member of Pacific Standard Time, a vocal jazz ensemble, that has won student music awards from Down Beat Magazine for the past seven years in a row. In January 2016, I had the opportunity to sing with Kurt Elling at the Jazz Education Network Conference.
