Irish, folk and Bluegrass styles, tunes, scales, improvisation techniques

About Marc
I've been playing music since I was 14 years old. I studied classical guitar at State University in Buffalo, NY. and also studied guitar at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. I love just about every style of music. I mostly play Celtic, Bluegrass, American traditional, jazz, and classical. I also love to improvise.
My goal is to get my students results so they feel that they are really making progress. I do this by incorporating practice exercises, ear training and some music theory.
Music theory and reading music can be intimidating for beginning students. So I like to get you playing first and add theory a little at a time so you can better understand it through experience and it makes learning more fun.

*** Studio Equipment ***
The studio has a piano, acoustic guitars, mandolins and other instruments.Students receive sh

*** Travel Equipment ***

*** Specialties ***

I have been playing the mandolin for about four years now and have had several different teachers, of which Marc is by far the best one I have had. I wish I had started with him. Marc is very patient and works with you to bring out your best effort. He challenges me with interesting music to play, helps me to understand the piece and shows me different ways to finger the notes. When I started with Marc two months ago I was playing hornpipes and dances and now I've moved up to Bach and Vivaldi. Marc is also an accomplished instrument maker.

Violin, viola instructor, performing art.
Classical music. Mostly traditional Russian method of violin teaching, also Suzuki.

About Larisa
Began violin lessons at age 8.
At age 15 was accepted into the elite program at the School of Music in Odessa, Ukraine.
Continued on to one of the premier music Universities in the world: Kiev State Conservatory, where I received a Masters degree in Teaching and Performing arts.
Throughout my higher education I have held Violin Instructor positions first at the Kiev Music School and then at the Conservatory.

My Professional Career in Ukraine and USA includes performance with numerous symphony and chamber groups, such as Kiev Chamber Orchestra, San Francisco Symphony, San Francisco Opera, San Jose Symphony.
I am passionate and dedicated to my Art which is reflected in my teaching style and in the results my students consistently achieve.
My ultimate goal as an instructor
is to convey to my students the beauty of making music. I define success to be the ability to see the joy that playing for yourself and others brings to you and your audience.

*** Lesson Details ***
My Method and Goals:

Proper technique is the key to producing extraordinary sound and growing as a violist. I ensure that my students gain solid understanding of these fundamentals first and foremost.
A significant part of the first few lessons will be devoted to developing proper posture and hold of the instrument. A good violinist must be relaxed to prevent muscle tension and produce those rich, spellbinding notes. Soon the instrument begins to feel like an extension of the hands, and students begin to progress much quicker, seeing (and hearing) surprising results.
I can follow the Suzuki method if requested, but much prefer principles of the Russian School. I will be happy to discuss the benefits of each with you.

*** Studio Equipment ***
on ground floor of townhouse w/ seating for parents

*** Travel Equipment ***
Student has to have his own instrument. I can provide the music sheets

*** Specialties ***
Classical music. Mostly traditional Russian method of violin teaching, also Suzuki.

A Great Violin Teacher

My daughter has been taking lessons with Larisa for three years and has made incredible progress. She began as a viola player and Larisa gave her lessons on that instrument as well. She was very helpful in making the transition to violin. Larisa works on technique as well as musicality so that the student develops into a well rounded musician. Larisa is the type of teacher who communicates clearly so that the student is able to immediately grasp the new concepts. She is a wonderful violinist and is able to demonstrate by playing beautifully as well as explaining. Larisa is extremely knowledgeable about the different periods of music and composers and shares this in her teaching. She has an easygoing personality and my daughter immediately connected with her. I would highly recommend Larisa for your student.

I began playing violin as a young child, and progressed to several hours a day during my teenage years. I taught throughout college, both as a violin instructor and as a private instructor.

My teaching programs vary according to the level of the student, and the goal he or she has set for him/herself, be it as a support to a school educational program or a personal love for music and/or the violin that seeks to develop itself into a practice.

About Gabrielle
A violinist is a musical knight: the round shield which once protected the heart has become a sound-resonating violin, the linear sword a bow, yet the fundamental gestures are the same. The active right directs according to linear rules, the left spirals inwards.

Dear Student,

My name is Gabrielle A. I am French, in my mid-twenties, and hold a MA in education. Simple, to the point, confident, smiling and fun, I engage quickly and well with those around me.

While teaching a standard violin apprenticeship curriculum, I approach the instrument from the perspective of movement: what qualitative gesture is at play behind a particular stroke or fingering?

Imagine playing violin according to lines of force, directions and qualities of movement between the right and the left! Musical sound, and its higher sibling tone, are born from
the qualitative interplay between right and left meeting in the human chest.
By inwardly experiencing the instrument as a threefold instrument (violin, bow and violinist) we can step away from the view that the violin is 'somewhere out there', a foreign object to be more or less painfully mastered.

I believe that as instrumentalists we ourselves are a part of the tone we produce.
I will therefore look with you at the kinesiology behind a correct posture and encourage you to experience the playing process as a circle between the violin, the bow and the violinist.

I hope to hear from you, meet you, and work with you!

Yours sincerely,
Gabrielle

Gabrielle is great at teaching my 9 year old french. She makes his lessons fun and keeps him engaged so that he always looks forward to his lessons. She does a great job engaging with the interests of her students, instead of sticking to a rigid lesson plan and losing the student. For example, quietly inserting verb conjugation and tense training into the telling of a story her student is determined to share with her. She really works with the kid's interests and gets their buy-in and engagement.

Learning an instrument is the most effective way to improve yourself. No matter if for a hobby or seeking a career, playing an instrument helps shaping your connections with yourself and others. With over 15 years of experience performing and over 10 years teaching students aging from 5 to 85 years old, I learned the most important surviving skill in our times, how to connect.
During lesson time we will approach technical aspects of the instrument, such as bow hold, sound production, intonation, developing dexterity in the left hand, and so on. Also, the phrasing, music making, repertoire development, and interpretation. Even though our lessons are specific developed for the instrument, music theory and ear training are important subjects to be addressed as well.
If you are looking for a constructive hobby for yourself or your kids, or you would like to put that forgotten instrument in use again, we will work with you to make this one of the most enjoyable experiences possible.

Learn how to:
• Groove on fiddle tunes
• Improvise
• Back up your friends on the fiddle

Hello Everyone! My name is Sumaia Jackson. I'm an alumni of Berklee College of Music in Boston, and have 10 years of teaching experience in a multitude of different styles. Coming from a deep classical background, I have also been immersed in many folk and roots music traditions including Bluegrass, Appalachian Old Time, Celtic, and a bit of Jazz. From private instruction, coaching orchestra and chamber music groups, leading workshops, and teaching at fiddle camps, I've worked with players of all ages and levels, and I love exploring the nuanced stylistic languages.

Based out of the Bay Area, I'm available to teach violin and fiddle lessons in SF/Marin/Berkeley and surrounding areas.

Get in touch to schedule a lesson!

About Sumaia
I have experience teaching all levels and I love doing everything from teaching tunes, to exploring more modern techniques and setting of playing the fiddle, such as:
• What happens if your friends have a cool rock band and you want to jam with them but you play the violin and it feels awkward?
• What happens if you go play with them and your friend looks at you to take a solo in the middle of a tune? (AH!)
• What if you are playing in a traditional folk band and you want to figure out what else you can do besides play the melody?
. . . et cetera!

Not to worry, that's why I'm here, and I'm more than happy to help with all these problems and more! Playing the fiddle/violin can fill so many roles now a days and people LOVE hearing it! You'll be your town's new rock star! :)

I grew up in Santa Cruz, CA playing the fiddle and go
ing to music camps and studying classical music intensely as well as traditional fiddle music from many countries and regions. I studied in Boston at the Berklee College of Music, as well as lived in Nashville, and now hold a degree in Performance with a minor in American Roots Music. Throughout my many years of playing, I've been immersed in many different settings: I have experience playing amplified, being dropped into a jazz band and told to solo next to a saxophone player, being asked to come play with a local folk-rock cover band, playing at Bluegrass Festivals across North America, fronting a band, and being hired as a fiddle player to back up a singer-songwriter.
