Whether you're 3 or 103, if you're playing violin (or starting to play!) I hope you're EXCITED about it!! Over the years, my students have said that their lessons are/have been their favorite times of each week. I believe learning to play viola should be full of joy, learning, thinking, and feeling. Bring that joy alive for yourself by partnering with me as your musical guide. I bring over 30 years of experience and pure joy to my work, and I'd love to share that with you!

About Jill

Students can start with me as a beginner or as an advanced student looking to learn new practice skills, new technique, skills, and bow strokes. Students work on scales, exercises for tone and coordination, vibrato, solos, sight reading, rhythm, audition music, and orchestral music. They get 2-6 opportunities to perform per year. I can teach a variety of music styles such as jazz, classical, romantic period music, 20th Century music, contemporary music, bluegrass, Celtic, Irish Fiddle, Scottish Fiddle, movie music, and popular music. I recommend many youth orchestras in the area that I encourage my students to join. Some of my students go to Italy in the summer with their orchestra. I can help you work on audition music for All Southern Youth Orchestra and All State Youth Orchestras and other Youth Orchestras. I go at the student's pace and also start out many beginners that have reached Suzuki Book 10 level.

I'm the gramma of Chloe (the student)who is 12 yrs old and taking Viola lessons from Jill over Zoom for home school. And I have to say as I was listening in the background I was thinking, Wow! It's as if they're old friends already! She has a very reassuring and friendly personality. And Chloe already learned something in that first lesson when Jill was trying to assess Chloe's abilities. I'm sure you'll immediately like her teaching abilities as much as we do.

Jill is just amazing! She breaks things down for me in session to help me develop my skills in a manner that helps the information just sick. She is always so patient and has such a great sense of humor.

My daughter has been learning from Jill to play violin for more than five years and she has improved dramatically over that time. She also takes piano lessons with Jill which has fed her musical curiosity. Jill is patient, positive, and an expert in her craft. Great teacher!!!

Music should never simply be a rote-learning process. We develop real artistry. My students learn how to interpret, transform, and create music. From the first lesson, we experiment with various musical "ingredients" and revisit these tools often as we move through a lesson series or repertoire. Students explore a variety of styles and learn to read, compose, and improvise. Students as young as five have created their own theme and variations on a favorite tune with these techniques.

"There is no need to look any further, Amy is the best instructor TakeLessons has to offer. If you are doubtful, schedule a few lessons to find out for yourself! She is patient, and takes time to explain new material. She has sent me audio recordings of measures that I had difficulty with during lessons. She has an upbeat personality and sharp ears, which is crucial for online learning. You can't go wrong with her as your instructor."

"Teachers like Maestro Mazzamuto are rare. It has been several years since I started to constantly taking lessons with him, and I can ensure you it was a wonderful surprise to meet someone so young (33 years old) but at the same time so experienced and knowledgeable. In almost 4 years of hard work together I grew enormously not only as a musician but as a human being too. He’s not simply a teacher, he’s a real inspiration and one of the few teachers who can deservedly be called Maestro."

Violin Tips: Developing Your Bow Hand

Before you can get to the double-stops and harmonics, you'll need to learn how to develop your bow hand. Without this foundation, other techniques may be compromised. Read on for a tutorial and bowing exercise from Portland, OR violin teacher Greg A... It can be mesmerizing to watch the fingers of a fiddler run up and down and across the strings, fast as lightning. But the motor that’s doing the bulk of the work and producing the beautiful tone is actually in the bow hand.  Before picking …
