I am an adult beginner violinist. When I first met Stephanie, I had barely touched a violin, but I was determined to learn how to play it. With her help and patience, I am progressing through the Suzuki method as well as doing ear training and music theory. Stephanie is an excellent musician as well as instructor! Her method of teaching keeps the students engaged, encouraged and excited about learning music from all sides of it.

I strongly recommend Ms. Quinn. She is amazing. I love a teacher who is passionate about what she does and Ms. Quinn has motivated me to love the violin and work harder to improve. She is slightly strict but very patience and kind, always pushing you to work hard and do your best. I learned to play violin a few years ago as a beginner and stopped playing for a few years. I was nervous to begin online violin lessons considering that I learn better face to face. However, Ms. Quinn has done an amazing job at teaching me, I have been taking lessons with her for a year now and have learned so much I didn’t know before which has also grown my love for violin.

Stephanie helped my younger one prepare for competition. She was highly skillful, supportive yet strict. Initially, my girl was a bit nervous to work with Stephanie because of her high reputation. Stephanie was very kind and fun, using metaphors to help my 10-year old understand the music. She not only helped my child overcome barriers to master the music piece but also shared much practical advice for competition. We did not expect this but my 10-year old won the first prize and was invited to perform in Carnegie Hall New York. Highly recommend Stephanie!!!

Study with the Concertmaster of the San Antonio Symphony! Prizewinner of international violin competitions, Billboard-charting recording artist. I've taught at Rice University, UT Austin, TCU, and given many masterclasses in the US and abroad. My goal as a teacher is to make myself superfluous. I teach my students to find their own unique voice, not how to copy my style. My former teachers include Cho-Liang Lin, Linda Cerone, among many others.

I love teaching all aspects of violin, and a good teacher will listen to you before having an idea of what to say. If you want to do some deep work on technique, musicality, or mental stamina, we'll get right to it. Proficiency in reading music is a basic requisite for my fee to be worth your time.

About Eric

I'm very fortunate to be able to regularly collaborate with many incredible artists in my international career as a concertmaster, soloist, chamber musician, and recording artist. I've learned from everyone I've ever worked with, and this is especially true when it comes to my private students. As

Mr. Gratz has been amazing for my children. As a phenomenal violinist he is able to inspire them by his example. When he demonstrates a section of music, I see my children’s faces light up with excitement. As an excellent educator he tailors his instruction to the unique needs and personalities of each of my children. He exudes the perfect blend of excitement and discipline in his teaching. He is both demanding and caring in his expectations. It is a real privilege for our children to get to take lessons with Mr. Gratz.

Cool guy, demanding teacher, great combination. Seriously, this guy knows his stuff. I leave every lesson with something new to work on for the next lesson and I know what I’m getting is some of the best there is. Anyone would be really fortunate to study with Eric, so I’m glad I’m able to every week.

Eric is an exceptional violinist and teacher. I have taken lessons with him for about 4 years now, starting with in-home lessons and now online lessons due to covid. In my lessons, Eric really shines in teaching bow hold and nuanced bow strokes, as well as teaching musicality. Prior to Eric, I had taken lessons with about 7 or 8 different teachers, who were good in their own different ways, however had focused primarily on left hand technique. Eric showed me that there is so much more to playing and executing music at a high level. In lessons we discuss musical interpretations, something I had never had to do or think about before, much less vocalize. Eric also pushed me to play genres of music that were outside my comfort zone, so I have grown as a musician by better understanding different genres and not just the ones I am comfortable with. There is also something about having a good teacher/student relationship and interactions, which involve the expectations, pace of learning, and the ways in which a teacher instructs (which encompasses attitude, analogies, etc); Eric has a really good way of describing things, as well as putting enough of a fire under your butt to make you push harder. There is nothing that can replace having a teacher who can actually play and demonstrate, and not just talk about how a technique should be. Eric can PLAY. And in lessons, his ears are so good and quick they can hear and pick up on things like you wouldn’t believe, EVEN over online lessons! I also love that I was able to learn very high level etudes, like Paganini caprices, and he really knows them and can play them, so you have confidence in the way you approach the music and techniques. Whoever takes lessons with Eric is very lucky because his knowledge isn’t just walking around with your every day violin teachers, it’s really special.

"Dustin Newbold has been my violin teacher for nearly eight years.
He is an accomplished musician and outstanding teacher, always patient, encouraging, and professional. He brought me through the very early stages of the violin as a beginner student, to now playing first violin in the community orchestra.
He has not only helped me become a better musician, but has been very knowledgeable in bringing me through the rough times of bowing, tuning, and even selecting the appropriate violin, strings, and accessories.
Dustin has the sensitivity to understand the student's level of ability and skill, and he creates a path for improvement. Lessons are always challenging and fun.
I highly recommend Dustin to any student who is serious about learning music, and especially to those to aim to be proficient on their instrument."

"Jessica started teaching my son in Feb 2014, just after he turned 5. He told me that he wanted to play an instrument and chose the violin, so we went online and found Jessica here and on the Suzuki website. Her experience and reviews really stood out and I can tell you from our personal experience that every word is true. She is the most patient, kind, fun, engaging, and positive teacher you could ask for for your child. And on top of it all, she is an excellent violinist herself who really understands music and how to explain it.

My son has come a really long way and he is very proud to be able to play the violin! He is not always the easiest to work with, (some days his favorite word is 'no'!) but she really encourages him when he gets frustrated and I know she is a big part of why he has come so far.

One of the things I love about Jessica is her ability to adapt seamlessly to the needs of her students. She is flexible and able to adjust what she does to take advantage of her students' strengths and gradually improve their weaknesses and doesn't just stick to one way of teaching. She is also incredibly accessible if you have questions or need guidance and always stays in touch, even with her busy schedule.

After a few months of my son taking lessons, we even decided to hire her for an extra half hour so that I could get formal instruction too. I am 39 and never seriously played an instrument before (1 year of elementary school clarinet, notwithstanding) yet she can go right from teaching my 5 yr old to working with me without missing a beat. I feel like she brings out the best in her students and I see concrete improvement in my own skills and understanding every week and can't believe how far I have come in only a few months with her.

So bottom line is whether you are 5 or 50 and no matter your experience level, if you are looking for a violin teacher, I highly recommend hiring Jessica immediately"

Violin Techniques: How to Get a Stronger Bow Arm

Do you want to improve your violin skills? Bow arm movement and direction are important violin techniques every beginner should master. Below, violin teacher Julie P. shares some tips on how to get a stronger bow arm...  In violin playing, the bow is what creates the sound. The bow arm has two basic movements: moving the bow vertically between strings, and moving the bow horizontally across strings. In order to achieve a beautiful tone, these movements must be understood and continua …
