I am pretty easy going. I want you to feel comfortable and at ease, but we do need to focus and can have fun doing it. :)
I utilize various methods for each instrument, which is determined by the students learning style and ability; needs, so this can change as time goes on (not sticking to one particular publishers materials). I have done (and continue to do) extensive research into materials available for each instrument I teach, and supplement with my own, to utilize the best out there for "YOU" for the best possible progress. While ensuring an extremely well-rounded musical education, so you can progress at the best possible rate. Since each student's potential is different, each will progress differently. She taught lessons with a high degree of professionalism and care. As a novice, I was able to learn a lot because Catherine was patient and attentive to my learning style.

I'm an experienced and dedicated cellist, having played with Orchestras and Chamber groups throughout my state. My lessons are focused on relaxation, and am as laid back or strict as the student needs. Whether you're a beginner or advanced, shooting to be a church player or a pro, I have taught students for that and am the teacher for you.

About Nicholas

Nicholas is a professional cellist that has studied since the age of 9. He has now been teaching the cello, viola, and violin for the past seven years for students of all ages, beginner to pre-college level.

Throughout Nicholas’s career, he has been an active member of Honors Orchestras, Youth Symphonies, Chamber ensembles, Opera Symphonies, and his university’s symphony. His music consists of mostly a classical nature with some contemporary and popular music ensembles.

Nicholas trained for three years in college under the renowned cellist Martha Gerschefski, whose accomplishments are too many to list. He also trained under Christopher Rex, the principal cellist of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. Nicholas now holds a Bachelor’s degree in Music Performance at Georgia State University.

We love Mr. Heaton. My son is 13 and on the autism spectrum and so focus can be hard for him, he was really struggling in school based orchestra because they couldn't give him one on one attention. He also struggles with fine motor delays (which is why we chose a string instrument). We've been doing lessons with Nicholas for almost a year now. Nicholas always takes his time with my child and is extremely patient. My son has gained SO much confidence since we began taking these private lessons. They work on not just learning to play cello but learning how to really understand/read the music and making sure that the techniques he's learning (hand positions, ways of sitting and moving) are all exactly what he needs to progress successfully in his orchestra and going forward. My son enjoys his lessons and I feel like we always get our money's worth. I can't wait to see where he will be another year from now working so closely with such an amazing musician and teacher.

Nicholas has been a great guide to my revisiting the cello. It had been almost 30 years since my last lesson, and he has reminded and coached many skills I had forgotten, and has taught me new ways thinking and playing.

Luther stays where I’m at and then helps me go the next step. That is useful for consistent gradual progress without the frustrations of moving either too slow or too fast (I am a beginning tenor saxophone player). Nice interpersonal style, patient and easy going, while methodical.

I think Luther is great. He works with my 10-year old son on piano, singing and even trumpet and violin as needed. My son has to work hard to progress, and Luther customizes the lesson plan for him and seems to understand him well. I'm really excited about them working together.

As a seasoned teacher and performer on modern and baroque cello, I'm here to help you take the next step in your studies. Whether you're a beginner (child or adult), advanced player, returning to the cello after a hiatus, or anywhere in between, I will work with you to tailor our lessons to fit your needs and help you play with as much ease and fluidity as possible.

I'm a member of the Hausmann Quartet, The Knights chamber orchestra, San Diego Baroque Soloists, and appear frequently with Bach Collegium San Diego and on the Art of Elan and San Diego New Music concert series, among others. I teach cello and chamber music at San Diego State University as well as privately.

About Alex

I enjoy a diverse and adventurous musical life, here in San Diego and around the world. As a member of the Hausmann Quartet I'm an Artist-in-Residence at San Diego State University, where I teach cello and chamber music. As a long-time member of The Knights chamber orchestra (based in Brooklyn) I've performed throughout the U.S. and Europe, from New York to Vienna, Ireland, Germany and the Canary Islands, and appeared at the festivals of Aix-en-Provence, Caramoor, Dresden, Ojai, Ravinia, Tanglewood, and last season returned to Vienna’s Musikverein and the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg. I've recorded for Ancalagon, Bridge, Canary Classics, Cantaloupe, In a Circle, Koch, Naxos, Warner Classics and Sony records.

I'm a committed educator who's been teaching cello for twenty years, and enjoy working with students of all levels and ages to help

them fulfill their musical goals and dreams. I teach at SDSU, Villa Musica as well as privately and online. I regularly coach individuals and groups of pre-college students at the Hausmann Chamber Music Program (at SDSU's Community Music School), adults as part of the Hausmann Quartet's Living Room Program of community chamber music, and coordinate and teach at Art of Elan’s Young Artists in Harmony program.

My varied interests have led to collaborations with dance companies, recordings for film, television and commercials, early music work and performances throughout Mexico. Locally, I'm a founding member of San Diego Baroque, a mainstay on the Art of Élan series, an affiliated artist with San Diego New Music and appear regularly with Bach Collegium San Diego. I have degrees from the Eastman School of Music (BM) and CUNY Queens College (MA). My teachers have included Steven Doane, Marcy Rosen, Ross Harbaugh, Joseph Elworthy and Andre Emelianoff. My 16 year old daughter has been taking lessons from Alex for two years. He's a very accomplished cellist with a strong background in all areas of playing the cello. He has been very patient with my daughter. He makes the lessons fun. Her skill level has steadily improved and can be directly attributed to lessons with Alex. Most importantly, he has helped her gain more confidence in her playing! I highly recommend him to anyone who wants to become a better cellist!

Alex is an excellent cello teacher! He is very perceptive and offers solid suggestions to help you improve your technique and grow as a player. Learning a new instrument can be quite stressful, but Alex is a supportive teacher whose friendly smile and casual demeanor will help put you at ease in your studies.

My name is Jerry. I LOVE music and passing my knowledge on to others. I have played many different instruments in many different kinds of bands. It all one major thing in common, it was FUN! If you are not having fun while learning an instrument you won't want to learn. Lessons can be fun AND educational at the same time. I have had many parents tell me I'm one of the best teachers they have ever seen. (A couple of them were public school teachers themselves). I truly want my students to succeed and I will do everything in my power to help them accomplish that!

Jerry is a wonderful instructor. I wasn’t sure how online lessons would go but they have been seamless and fun and my son is making progress with the bugle. I would highly recommend this format and this teacher. The convenience and quality of instruction are excellent. We are signing up for more lessons and may move on to another instrument once my son feels confident on the bugle.
