Over the course of the last 19 years, I have accumulated many hours of music performance experience in a variety of styles ranging from heavy metal and classical music, to electronic music and jazz. I am looking for a way to expand my horizons, and to share with others what I have learned over the years. I feel that these varied experiences can help any student achieve the style and sound they are looking for.

About Ryan
I have been playing guitar and bass for 19 years. In that time I have written, recorded and produced 6 albums of original music and toured the west coast three times. In 2011, I began my formal music training at Shoreline Community College. I am well versed in the many genres of rock and roll as well as classical, jazz, country, and worship music. I have performed in jazz groups, worship teams, rock bands, solo classical guitar and played orchestra guitar in Shoreline Community College's production of the play "Working" by Stephen Schwartz. In addition to my varied performance experience I have contributed original compositions to 8 student games produced at DigiPen Institute of Technology. I am a well rounded musician with a ton of relevant experience and I am looking for an opportunity to share that with others.

Well, it was my nine year olds first lesson and we're all feeling optimistic, so that's a good sign! Ryan gave me some pointers on banjo shopping before I ever signed up for lessons, told ya what book we would need, and he showed up with parts I didn't know we needed! Looking forward to next week :)

Let's get you started on your new guitar path!

About Abby
My name is Abby, and I've been playing guitar for about 15 years now. I graduated from Musician's Institute in 2007, and since then, I have had a great deal of experience teaching guitar to kids and adults, both individually and in groups.

I've spent three summers in a row teaching at Camp Jam and Day Jams, and I had the pleasure of being the Camp Jam kids director of the Orange County location in 2008. They were both great experiences . I have spent he last couple summers teaching School of Rock summer camps which was also a really fun time.

I love helping students find their passion for music and the creative process. I have been teaching at my current music school for about two years, and privately for about 6 years.

I have studied and taught many different styles of guitar, as well as note reading and theory. You could
say I'm a rock player at heart, but I love all styles.

I am currently not traveling to homes for lessons, but I am still taking students who are able and willing to come to my location.

Guitar is my main instrument, I have been studying music by way of the guitar for fourteen years. I am well versed in many different styles but make my living playing jazz funk, and musical theater.

About Ian
Ian has graduated with an associates of music, along with studying with a handful of Seattle's finest instructors for Jazz guitar. In addition to studying flamenco guitar in Barcelona with the world-renowned Pedro J. Gonzales, Ian is also is a practiced percussion and drums instructor, and trained vocalist. He regularly plays in clubs around Seattle, is frequently employed by local musical theater orchestras, and already teaches a vibrant studio in Northeast Seattle.

I have a six year background of teaching music, which overlaps with a six year background of working at and managing a K-5 after school/summer daycare, so I can especially excel at getting the best out of young students, but love to teach all ages.

*** Lesson Details ***
Depending on your age, experience and musical aspirations, lessons will be approached from va
rious angles. I have taught seven-year old girls to strum and sing Taylor Swift songs just as much as I have taught aspiring young jazz players their beginning standards and Jazz theory. I try to work music theory in to my lessons, and always assure that my young students have proper music reading skills. Ultimately my goal as a teacher is to have fun connecting and playing the music that my students are passionate about, while simultaneously attempting to introduce them to new concepts and music.

In search of helping our 10 year old son build some self-confidence we sought out clarinet lessons this summer. He started playing in school last year, and it was something our reluctant son liked "enough" to want to build up some competency. Joshua has been amazing! He finds just the right amount of challenge to encourage my son to practice, but not get discouraged. My son looks forward to his lesson each week and told me that he isn't even sure he wants to switch to saxophone next year because he is having so much fun playing the clarinet. Joshua is amazing with children, and has spent time getting to know our kiddo and find out what will work best for him. Patient, calm, and inspiring--very talented instructor.

Joshua Blatman is a fantastic music teacher. He has a great resume, is experienced in a variety of instruments, and a solid background in teaching.

I whole-heartedly recommend Joshua for anyone of any age and any skill level who wants to enrich their life learning guitar. I appreciate the fact that he makes the time and has the patience to adapt to my needs. Joshua is flexible in scheduling - especially for those unforeseen incidents - which is appreciated.

Being an adult beginner with music lessons, Joshua eases my frustration on immediately wanting to play perfect notes and chords. I look forward to continuing lessons.

I've been a guitarist since I was eight, an arts tutor since I was 17, and now I'm a professional live musician for several artists signed/affiliated with major record labels. I also self-record my own pop music and gig around Seattle. I teach all ages and a variety of styles--classical, rock, pop, acoustic, bossa nova. I will help train your ear to tap into your body's natural musicality by using a variety of media and exercises. Being a good musician takes time and work, but art is an emotional expression--so we must have fun, no matter what!

About Jake
I'm a contracted studio and touring musician for a major Seattle record label (Barsuk) who has 8 years of experience tutoring the arts to all ages. I’ve played hundreds of shows, and my guitar and bass playing appears on a handful of albums. Since 2009, I've been a part-time K-12 arts tutor with a nonprofit called 826 National. I've taught lots of kids, big and small, the ropes of the fretboard, the chord books, and the fundamentals of rhythm, melody, and musical hearing. I studied theatre and classical guitar at Whitman College, so I can help you improve your technical playing and performative abilities too.

As of May 2017, I'm new to TakeLessons/charging money for teaching privately, so please know how much I appreciate your patronage and audience. I know the importance of a patient, encouraging, knowledgeable teacher when learning t
he arts, and I think I can help you find strength in self-musical expression. Every person is different and every student learns differently; I think the best tutors can be flexible to their students' needs and be able to provide alternative learning solutions when roadblocks appear. We will communicate well with each other about learning goals and tactics, and we will have a LOT of fun on the guitar together! By the end of 5 lessons, I'll help you be more confident and/or versed in your guitar playing, and we'll only have lots more to learn and explore!

I'm a versatile guitarist with 8 years of teaching experience ranging from the elderly to the very young and everything in between.

My philosophy is to inspire the student. Growing up, I quit various instruments because my teachers failed to give me the tools that I needed to go home and have fun practicing. Giving the student these tools, no matter their age or experience level is my number one goal.

About Benjamin
Hi!

My name is Ben, and I can't wait to start playing guitar with you. I have been playing since age 14, and am a recent college graduate. Most of professional experience is as a jazz guitarist, but I have spent a good part of my career playing rock, funk, blues, and folk. Whatever your style and experience is, I would love to work with you to make you a better guitarist and musician. My number one goal is to inspire the student by giving them tools to start having fun in the practice room as soon as possible.

Ben is very talented and very knowledgeable. He was open to covering whatever I was looking to do and has helped me learn some of the basics of soloing on an electric guitar (maj/min scales, pentatonic scales, arpeggios, etc.). Ben has a nice setup in his apartment for lessons and I would recommend him as an instructor.

I teach beginner all the way advanced students who are looking to improve as musicians or learn the guitar from square one. What's most important to me as a teacher is helping you achieve your goals in music. I have a decades plus worth of experience teaching and playing guitar and am currently an active member on the Seattle music scene performing at various venues around town; As an educator, I have 8 years of experience teaching students of all levels and styles and my focus for the student is tailoring lessons to best meet students' goals and putting them in the best possible scenario to achieve them.

About Jesse
My name is Jesse and I am a guitarist who lives in Seattle, WA. I graduated from the University of Southern California with Cum Laude Honors in 2015. I maintain a busy schedule of performances accompanying jazz singers in the area and I am on faculty at Cornish College of the Arts as an accompanist in the jazz voice department.

I began teaching beginning guitar lessons to friends and classmates in high school. Ever since I picked up the guitar, I knew it was something that I wanted to pursue professionally because of the joy that it brought me. Being able to share that with other people is something I am very passionate about. I continued teaching beginning guitar and advanced jazz harmony to other guitarists in the music program to help pay tuition in college at USC. I taught at Music and Arts in Redmond during the summer after finish
ing college before moving to the Bothell store within the same organization. I also began teaching at the Andrew White School of Music around the same time. I teach beginners on both guitar and bass as well as jazz improvisation on guitar.

Jazz is a style of music I specialize in and I teach it like teaching a language as I firmly believe that jazz is a language. I teach improvisation to not only guitar, but to all instruments as the concepts are the same. Improvisation lessons are fun and interactive and challenge you to be creative, which is what art is all about!

My teaching method is very flexible, as I am very aware that students learning styles and goals vary greatly. I am a patient teacher who will work to help put a student in a position to be successful and achieve his or her goals through lesson plans and teaching methods tailored to meet the student's learning style. Seeing students succeed and have fun making progress and improving as a musician brings me a lot of joy!

There is nothing more frustrating for a student than feeling like they're treading water trying to teach themselves. My goal is to make the learning process as fun as possible! One of the ways I do that is giving the student the opportunity to experiment with improvisation and explore the instrument during lessons and for when they practice at home to supplement the more formal training. This helps students develop their own individual sound on the instrument from day one, is fun and interactive, and gives the student the chance to be creative when learning a new instrument..

A major priority of my guitar teaching is to have students making expressive music every time they touch the instrument.

I begin by working on tone production on the open strings of the guitar, so that students are able to produce a full, beautiful tone on the first day. From there, we study left- and right- hand techniques in the context of real pieces of music, giving students the chance to apply the mechanics of guitar playing to the expression of musical ideas. At the same time, I work with students through progressive studies and warm-up exercises that have built-in expressive goals, so that they can learn to rely on their own ears to further refine their playing.

As I believe that a good guitarist is, first and foremost, a strong musician, I fold a number of diverse activities into weekly lessons, developing skills in music theory, ear training, sight reading, composition, and improvisation, all of which reinforce the acquisition of strong technique.

About Jeff
I’m a composer and guitarist, with 20 years of experience playing and performing on classical and electric guitars. I’ve given solo and chamber performances across the United States, with recent Seattle performances including Astor Piazzola’s complete "Histoire du Tango", the world premiere of Brian Cobb’s "Campfire Songs," and the Seattle premiere of James Bonney’s electric guitar concerto "darkLIGHTness."

In 2010, I received a Bachelor of Arts degree in classical guitar performance and composition from Stanford University, where I performed solo recitals of Bach, Mozart, Turina, and Henze, collaborated with the Stanford New Ensemble on contemporary chamber pieces, and played lead guitar in the heavy metal band Full Metal Apocalypse.
I recently received a Doctorate in music composition from the University of Washington in Seattle, wher
e I’ve taught music theory, composition, and musicianship at the college level for seven years, and where I continue to perform with the UW Modern Ensemble, Inverted Space Ensemble, and Seattle Modern Orchestra.

A major priority of my guitar teaching is to have students making expressive, compelling music every time they touch the instrument. And as I believe that a good guitarist is, first and foremost, a strong musician, I fold a number of diverse activities into weekly lessons, developing skills in music theory, fretboard knowledge, ear training, sight reading, composition, and improvisation, all of which reinforce the acquisition of strong technique.

I teach a wide array of styles—including classical, folk, rock, flamenco, and heavy metal—and I look forward to helping you realize your musical goals!
