Learn about common variations of the tonalities you already know and start to venture into more complex rhythm ideas like polyrhythms. Also start to build the chops to learn parts more accurately when learning songs.
Expand into more complex polyrhythms as well as asymmetrical meters. Also expand harmony and melody to include modes and chromaticism. Push your skills through original creations or original arrangements of existing material.

I've been playing with classical ensembles and rock bands since 2001. Even though I started on classical trombone and rock guitar, I have come to expand my repertoire to a variety of instruments and genres. During my time in college I performed with the University choir, orchestra, and band. I also have organized, wrote/arranged for, and performed with a variety of bands in my home state of New Mexico, as well as Japan, and the San Francisco Bay Are
Since 2006 I have been an active teacher. This profession has taken me everywhere from working with classical guitar classes in New Mexico high schools to Elementary students in Japan to a variety of private students of various musical instruments and genres everywhere I've been. Since relocating to the Bay Area in 2010, I've had the pleasure of working with lots of great students from kids to adults with a wide range of ambitions. Since 2012 I've been running my own full time studio.
Philosophy of Learning
Lessons are generally designed to work towards giving students the tools to accomplish their goals and become increasingly independent over time. While all students will study similar fundamentals regarding technique, theory, and performance, every lesson is as different as every person. What kind of music do you want to make? I'll tell you what you need to do to get there, and help you take the steps to achieve your aspirations.
I also love to help students put together a song, record, and produce it for them so that they can have a recording to share with their friends and family.

Younger students have the "Young Musicians Showcase" every few months where individual students and band classes have a chance to perform and celebrate their accomplishments with friends and family.
Adult students occasionally have events where they get a chance to get together and play music as well.
Aside from in-studio lessons, students also have the option to sign up for online lessons via Skype.

*Unfortunately due to scheduling issues, I'm not currently accepting students for bi-weekly lessons. I can do regular weekly lessons, or occasional drop-in lessons, but bi-weekly appointments make it really hard for me to give the best scheduled times to my existing weekly students. I'm sorry for the inconvenience.

I studied: classical piano, organ, oboe, clarinet, violin, voice, and guitar. I sang in jazz trios and pop bands, earned income as a church organist/choir accompanist, and spent 15 years teaching private piano lessons to students of all ages.
I studied drawing and painting, I drew trees, animals, the ocean, sky and mountains, still life, and the people around me.

I now compose and sing my songs - interweaving voice with keyboard or guitar. Besides teaching privately, I can be found performing my songs in clubs, outdoor festivals, coffee houses, and poetry/healing events. I currently attended a certificate program in sound & music healing and the focus of my music rests here. I incorporate many techniques to aid students in relaxation, breath awareness, and de-stressing.
Using traditional teaching methods, I create meaningful experiences for students by:

Guitar is a very friendly instrument - with some basic skills, you can play literally thousands of songs. I'll break down the building blocks with you and help you drill them in so you'll be jamming in no time.
As a singer-songwriter, the guitar is one of my favorite companions. I began self-taught, and later took lessons, so I have both an intuitive and academic understanding of how to learn the instrument. We'll make the guitar simple and approachable, covering basics of music theory, reading music, ear training, guitar "anatomy," and of course, playing techniques.
For posture and comfortable playing methods, we'll draw from the Feldenkrais Method, and yoga. For foundational musical skills we'll draw on what I've learned in my academic studies of music, and what I've learned as a certified Music Together teacher.

As a teacher, I draw on my professional experience as an actor and singer, my teaching background in myriad subjects (Feldenkrais, Music Together, general music, theatre, yoga, fitness, literature, etc.), and my eclectic training in acting, classical voice, musical theatre, various methods of body work, and healing.

Whether a beginner, intermediate or advanced my lessons will help you reach your goals.
As I look back at my life, I see that music was my constant companion. My passion for music, and more specifically for the guitar, goes back to the time when, as a ten year old I received a guitar for my birthday. The sound of the instrument truly struck a chord in my heart and I learned to respect and love the instrument to the point that I thought of it almost as a companion, as something alive or, more exactly, as something my fingers could make come alive. At first I wanted to play rock and popular music, but eventually I switched to classical. When I entered the realm of classical music, a whole new world opened up for me -- new feelings, new emotions, and new challenges.

While in Florida, I attended classes at Florida International University. Between 2000 and 2003 I played in an orchestra on board the ships of the Royal Caribbean Cruise Line.
All along the way I have been teaching the guitar at just about every level, an activity that I always enjoyed but admittedly is somewhat limiting. Teaching brings us back to the basics, but for a musician performing is what makes us grow professionally and satisfy us emotionally.

First off - he is SUPER punctual. The one time he was running late I even got a timely text message warning.
Second - he is very good at diagnosing issues and providing the right exercise/coaching.
Third - he is very flexible. I feel him supporting my music choices... not imposing his still or preferences.
And finally - he seems to me (I'm not good enough to judge) VERY skilled as a player... able to deconstruct songs, able to transpose quickly, able to find alternative strumming patterns.

Students learn notation, tab, theory and chords. They will play entire songs along with recordings by their favorite artists. Later they will learn how to improvise a solo or play one from a recording. Fingerpicking styles will also be taught as well as how to chord in the correct style for the music.
Other students may have a specific goal and a custom curriculum will be created to get them there fast.
Students are encouraged to listen, keep solid rhythm, try different styles, and have fun.
I incorporate music theory into my lessons but can also teach theory by itself.
I cover rock, folk, pop, blues, jazz, gospel, country or classical. I teach fingerpicking and flat-picking. I strive to find a good balance each lesson between the study of reading, technique and music theory and learning songs you know and like.
I have had excellent results with this approach so that typically ¼ of my students have stayed and studied with me for over 3 years!

My students can expect to have their lessons with me structured to fit their own unique and personal goals no matter what skill level they pursue or have already attained. I would encourage my students to find and bring sheet music and/or tablature for songs they wish to learn. Students are also encouraged to have blank music and/or tab paper for their lessons. For all lessons whether online or in home, students can expect me to bring a small amp, extra 1/4 in and 1/8 in cables, extra guitar picks, various guitar method books, a laptop computer, tuner & metronome, as well as other supplies needed. For in home lessons, I will do the best that I can to come to the student's home at least 5-10 min early to allow time to set up gear needed for lessons. As a final note, if there is a time and/or day that you would like to schedule a lesson with me that you do not see listed as part of my availability or if you have any other questions, please do not hesitate to ask. Along the years of playing, on stage and with friends, I've come to the realization that learning guitar is a task that can be done alone, but that, is too much of
a lonely road. No one needs to endure the common pitfalls and inefficiencies of learning by your self. Having someone to guide you through the process and keep you focused is the best way to have your playing become an even more rewarding experience, whether you are trying to learn your favorite song, composition or solo, or whether you are trying to immerse yourself in the language of jazz, blues, rock, acoustic or classical, a guide is key.
My view is that a balance of independence and guidance works best when taking on the task of beginning an instrument or expanding your musical vocabulary. I'll be there as a reference, a facilitator and honest listener.
I am primarily a musician, working in the city but find that teaching others both the language of music and my native tongue, Spanish, are a fascinating and positive way to give back to my community.
