The trumpet is one of the most demanding yet rewarding instruments. As a dominant voice in classical and jazz; the trumpet can be a section or solo instrument.

As his primary instrument, Vince began playing trumpet in 1998. He took lessons provided by his elementary school. Vince advanced rapidly, quickly winning principle chair in school ensembles and later with select county and state wide bands. He participated in many solo competitions performing classical and jazz trumpet throughout middle and high school.

In 2003, Vince began studying classical trumpet privately with Mark Klose then later with John Maguda. Vince studied many of the classic methods including Arban's Complete Conservatory Method, Schlossberg's Daily Drills and Technical Studies, Clarke's Technical Studies, and Stamp's Warm-Ups & Studies. Vince also studied solo repertoire by Hindemith, Haydn, and Kennan among others.

While cultivating the classical foundation, Vince focused on jazz trumpet by listening,

About Vince
“Basically he’s the go-to cross-genre horn-blowing utility man of the Philly scene” (John Vettese). Vince Tampio is a professional trumpeter, arranger, composer, and multi-instrumentalist based in Philadelphia, PA. Although firmly rooted in jazz, he is comfortable with a wide variety of genres including rock, soul, funk, folk, classical, and electronic.

Vince’s most recent solo album Live at PafA (2017) “is a contemporary instance of fusion done right,” and whose “nontraditional instrumentation maintains a spacious environment that proves ideal for a set brimming with imaginative, drawn-out improvisation” (Matthew Aquiline). This project was recorded as part of HotHouse at PafA After Dark: a concert series of the Philadelphia Jazz Project. Live at PafA was preceded by Syzygy (2014) and Syzygy: Remix (2014). Vince is currently self prod
ucing four more solo albums. One unreleased composition was recently featured in The Philadelphia Real Book Volume 1.

Vince has appeared as a side man on more than 25 albums. He is the trumpeter and arranger with the York Street Hustle, the John Byrne Band, the Cat’s Pajamas, and You Do You. He is a founding member of the Philly Phatness horn section, which has recorded with regional, national, and international artists, and on film soundtracks. Vince also writes and arranges for the Uptown String Band, a member of the Philadelphia Mummers String Band Association.

Vince earned the Masters of Music degree in Jazz Performance from the University of the Arts; and earned the Bachelor of Science in Music degree concentrating in Jazz Studies and Theory & Composition from the State University of New York (SUNY) at New Paltz. He studied trumpet through undergraduate and graduate school with Rebecca Coupe Franks, Dennis Wasko, and John Swana. Vince has also attended master classes held by Matt Gallagher, Craig Morris, Claudio Roditi, Malcolm McNab, Scott Holbert, Jeffrey Curnow, and Alison Balsom.

Vince first began teaching music in 2006 as the trumpet instructor at Silver Creek Central School. He directed trumpet master classes for high school students. Vince later took on various private students teaching trumpet, guitar, electric bass, improvisation, and arrangement and composition. While earning his Master of Music at the University of the Arts, he served as the trumpet department intern and was responsible for teaching private trumpet lessons, preparing transcriptions for class materials and live performances, and proctoring music theory exams.

Also at UArts, Vince was a teaching assistant for the Freshman Jazz Improvisation class for which he conducted sectionals, administered exams, and offered critiques regarding inventiveness of improvisations. He currently teaches a number of electric bass students at Philadelphia's Rock to the Future. Vince privately teaches trumpet, electric bass guitar, ear training, music theory, improvisation, arrangement, and composition to students of all ages and levels.

Since each student approaches music differently; I tailor my teaching to fit their approach. I ask each student, "What are you aiming to accomplish?" Together, we set short and long term goals. I believe a strong technical foundation leads to freer ease of artistic expression. My students receive a holistic approach to music applicable to whatever instrument of their choice.

Fast becoming a sought after trumpeter and arranger, Vince continually pursues work performing, arranging, composing, teaching and recording original music.

Quotes:

"Vince Tampio proves himself a very creative composer. I look forward to hearing more from this upcoming composer & instrumentalist." (Fred "Rock Steady Freddie" Reiter)

"Vince plays his horn with creative passion and soul, his tone is very open and full these two combined make him one of the leading up and coming young jazz trumpet players of today." (Rebecca Coupe Franks)

"I've had the great pleasure of working with Vince as an arranger and writer. His music explores many styles and directions, and is always well crafted. He has an original and distinctive voice as a player, an arranger, and a writer. Such dedicated talent deserves to be heard, and I'm sure we'll be hearing a lot from Vince in the future." Justin showed my 10 year old son how to play the trumpet and did a great job. He was patient, made my son feel comfortable and was able to help him get a better sound by the end of the very first lesson. Jalen does not give high praise easily so we were impressed that he enjoyed learning from him. My mother listened in on some of the lessons and she also said Justin did a great job - friendly personality and great tips on how to play. We highly recommend him.

I love teaching. I go into every lesson with the belief that the student is there to learn; if they weren't interested in learning, they wouldn't be there. Because I have always had diverse musical interests, I create a stress-free atmosphere for my students by allowing them to pursue whatever avenues of music interest them. My degrees may be in Jazz Studies and Performance, but I have extensive experience with Classical and Popular music; I provide a unique perspective and enthusiasm to every student.

About Michael
I am a professional trumpet player, singer, arranger and educator based in West Philadelphia. Born into a musical family in Peoria, IL, I began playing cello at the age of two, but eventually was drawn to jazz trumpet and voice, while having a keen sense of music theory and piano. I studied music at Cincinnati Conservatory of Music and Northwestern University. While at Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, I was awarded a FIPSE grant to travel to Brazil and study traditional samba music. While there, I worked as a clinician at Faculdade Cantareira in Brasilia. After CCM, I received my Masters in Jazz Studies from Northwestern University under the tutelage of Victor Goines (tenor saxophonist for Jazz at Lincoln Center) and Brad Mason (Current Musical Director for Blood, Sweat and Tears), during which, I was selected to perform as the “jazz tru
mpet” chair in part of Disney’s highly selective All American College Band.

After graduate school, I moved to the city of Chicago proper. For 3 years, I played trumpet and sang jazz standards most Thursday evenings at the famous Green Mill Cocktail Lounge, one of Chicago’s oldest jazz clubs. In addition to that, I helped start The Syndicate, my hip-hop brass band that offers a blend of funk, R&B and jazz. I also played with other groups such as Four Star Brass Band, and J-Livi and the Party, which released an album in July of 2016 called “Come and Share My Life," whom I still play with.

In addition to playing trumpet, I also am an accomplished classical singer, presently predominantly performing with the Crossing, a Grammy Nominated professional chamber choir conducted by Donald Nally. This 17-18 season, I'm singing with Consprirare, Apollo’s Fire, The Crossing, Vocal Arts Ensemble (Cincinnati), Variant 6, Madison Choral Project, ekmeles (NYC), and Choral Arts Philadelphia. Recently, I made my debut as a soloist with the Philadelphia Orchestra performing Chris Deviney’s “Pat Metheney Concerto.”

I have been teaching music for over 10 years. I am a strong believer in making sure my students have strong fundamentals. The stronger your fundamentals the easier it is to play the way you want to play. I have a lot to offer a student that goes far beyond playing the instrument. I have a lot of experience helping students learn how to deal with performance anxiety and learn music theory.

About Jeremy
I have been teaching music for over 10 years now. I come from Indiana and I worked as a brass teacher for several state finalist high school marching bands.

I believe that students need to feel free to make mistakes. When students feel comfortable it is easier for them to focus on getting better and are much more receptive to feedback.

I currently play euphonium for the Philadelphia Wind Symphony. I have also performed professionally for several musicals including West Side Story, Pirates of Penzance, and Animal farm. My previous performance experience includes being principal trombone of the Audubon Symphony Orchestra, principal euphonium for the Michigan City Municipal Band, and performing a solo work with the IUSB Wind Ensemble.

My main specialty lies with classical trombone but I also have plenty of experience with jazz music.

About Mark
Playing the trumpet is a joy and passion I love sharing with my students. Seeing each trumpeter progress as an individual on a path of discovery and learning gives me pride and pleasure. From beginners to high school and college students, to come-back players, I help each student create and set goals, and encourage them in the musical journey we make together.
I’ve taught hundreds of students of every level and discovered many secrets along the way to performing better with greater ease and efficiency. My 25 years of trumpet teaching experience and 13 years serving as Principal Trumpet with an orchestra have given me a wealth of musical knowledge which enriches my teaching methods. From smart practicing tips to performance techniques, I help all my students get the best preparation advice. My experience as a trumpet soloist in Europe and
the USA working with orchestras, pianists, vocalists, and organists has also given me a deep understanding of the art of music making as a soloist.

I have taught at colleges, public and private schools, as well as an international school in Portugal. I am now looking to expand my studio online, and invite new students who are excited about playing the trumpet.
Studying trumpet methodologies has given me insight into solving many problems brass students encounter as they learn to play. My methods help students tackle challenging music, understand theory and harmony, and prepare technically, musically, and emotionally for performances.
My students learn how to extend their range up and down the horn, broaden their tonal and dynamic palette of sound, and gain confidence and endurance in their playing abilities. Through coaching and creative imagination, I empower my students to reduce performance anxiety and develop more comfort and control in playing the trumpet. My students benefit also from learning techniques I’ve developed such as informed sight reading, transposition freedom, tone enhancement, breath control, ornamentation and improvisation.
I have great teachers to thank from the Boston Symphony, Boston Pops, Philadelphia Orchestra, Israel Philharmonic and other orchestras, as well as trumpet soloists who shaped and broadened my knowledge over many years of study. I invite you to watch my videos and look forward to helping you advance as a trumpeter and musician.

My lessons cover all the fundamental aspects of trumpet playing, including tone production and quality, articulation and rhythm, pitch and note accuracy, and style. Additionally, I want to push students to be not only better trumpet players, but better musicians with a finer knowledge of broader musical concepts as well as ensemble and performance etiquette and standards. I am experienced in all styles-- I play a lot of classical trumpet, but I love to play jazz as well, and I can also coach students to success in their school ensembles and in auditions for district bands or colleges. Most importantly, I want to know what kind of music you like to play, and I want to help you play that music and get better at it! Trumpet is fun, and it should be an enjoyable and rewarding experience!

About Tom
I am an upper level music education student at Christopher Newport University, where I enjoy playing in the University Wind Ensemble, Big Band, Concert Band, and athletic bands. I can very easily relate to the experiences that students have in school band programs-- I was there not long ago!-- but my 11 years of studies in trumpet, including under Dr. Kelly Rossum and Prof. Adam Gandolfo of the Virginia Symphony Orchestra while at CNU, provide me with advanced knowledge of trumpet performance. I can help you with district band or college auditions, any school music you may be playing, and most importantly building up your fundamental ability on the instrument. I have studied all types of trumpet playing, but I most enjoy playing with the trumpet section in the CNU Jazz Ensemble, playing the music of swing-era stars like Count Basie, Duke
Ellington, and Glenn Miller. I'm also a devoted Bruce Springsteen fan and love rock and roll! I want to help students develop into excellent trumpet players, but I also want you to play the music that you want to play. I believe music is a personal journey for each of us, and if there is something that you are searching for on your journey, I want to help you find it! Music should be fun and rewarding, and you should play things you enjoy!
