Adam is a wonderful guitar instructor. He is very knowledgable and he is always calm, patient and very encouraging. He taught me a lot of ways to practice and enjoy music. Thank you Adam! I would highly recommend!

I took acoustic guitar lessons with Adam and he was a wonderful teacher. I had little knowledge of the guitar and felt I developed my skills quickly. Adam was patient, nice and came up with fun exercises and song selections. Would highly recommend Adam as a teacher!
Julie
Adam’s superpowers as a guitar teacher are commitment and a calm demeanor. It was clear from my first lesson that Adam was singularly dedicated to my advancement even at times when my dedication wavered. I was able to successfully learn a Death Can for Cutie song that I had loved for years (I will follow you into the dark). Though i had taken lessons in the past, i felt i had the most chemistry with Adam’s thoughtful approach to teaching guitar. Our lessons were fun and laced with lighthearted humor. I moved to NYC and Adam was 100% committed to ensuring our lessons continued via Skype. Unfortunately the move was a big life change that refocused my priorities. I wish that Adam lived in NY so we could continue playing together!

My goal as a teacher is to avoid any type of dogmatic "one size fits all" curriculum. I always want to know what music the student enjoys and build my lesson plans based on their tastes. Chords can be physically challenging for beginners so I like to work with single-note melodies early on so that the student isn't quickly discouraged. Learning chords becomes the medium-term goal. As for the long-term, I will then use specific songs as examples for how music theory works in the context of their favorite bands. I am always prepared to adjust my lesson plans based on the students progress and overall comfort zone.

About Chris

My name is Chris B. and I've been playing music for most of my life. The best lesson that I've personally learned is that a musician is never done learning. Once you start believing that you know everything there is to know about your instrument then you've stopped growing musically. Personall

Jim
I have been taking guitar lessons with Nick Russo since February 2018. In my opinion, Nick Russo is a terrific musician and an outstanding teacher. He is an active gigging musician with an encyclopedic knowledge of music theory and music history and is well-versed in various types of music including, but not limited to classical, jazz, metal, folk, world music, etc., etc. Nick comes from a musical family and is very passionate about music, and this comes accross loud and clear in his lessons. He lives and breathes music.

I came to Nick after taking lessons for several years with another teacher. I liked this teacher very much, and the lessons only ended because the teacher moved to another geographic location. Although I did like this teacher, the lessons were starting to get stale and repetitious. When I started working with Nick that feeling was turned around. Lessons with Nick are very stimulating and interesting. Although Nick knows sight reading and theory well, he places a great emphasis on aural (ear) training. I have worked with him learning intervals, scales and songs, using my ears instead of my head. It’s a little hard to explain, but it’s a very organic kind of way to learn music. You learn the instrument more intuitively and I have had a number of’ “aha” moments when some pattern or connection or aspect of theory makes sense in a deep way. In the time that I’ve worked with Nick, my knowledge of the fretboard, and my ability to figure things out by ear has improved tremendously although I still have a long way to go.

Nick is also an incredibly kind and compassionate person, and he has shown a great deal of patience when working with me. If I don’t understand something he will try to break it down or present it in such a way that it finally makes sense to me. He has also worked a lot with me on my technique, and has tried to help me play more efficiently and ergonomically. Earlier in my guitar playing career, I developed

tendonitis in my left hand from playing. In addition, I have chronic lower back problems. Nick has made numerous helpful suggestions so that I don’t exacerbate these problems or injure myself again. One suggestion that was particularly helpful was to use a bass guitar strap for my electric guitar. Because the bass strap is much wider than a regular guitar strap, the weight is more evenly distributed across my back, resulting in less back strain.

I began my lessons with Nick face-to-face, but this changed to video due to the coronavirus pandemic. We utilize Skype and it seems to work pretty well, although there’s no substitute for meeting in person. Nick seems very adept at working in this modality. For example, he will have me position the camera so he can see how I am playing something. He will also provide close-ups of his own fingering to show me how he is playing something. In addition, Nick sends his students notes regarding the most salient points of each session. This is something he did even prior to the pandemic. Nick allows me to audio tape the sessions, and when I am able to go through the tape I gain an even deeper understanding of whatever was covered.

In short I feel that Nick is great person and a terrific teacher and that I was very lucky to have found him. I would recommend him to anyone with no reservation.
Brian
He is fanstastic! A very patient teacher who was always willing to go the extra step to help me learn and improve. I miss our lessons. However I still follow much of the advice and tricks he taught me!
J.E.P.
My son, who is 10 and has been playing guitar for two years, has been taking Nick’s band class for the last 9 months and we are very happy with it. Nick is not only a great musician, but as a father himself knows well how to teach kids and make them engage in whatever they are playing.

He has taught my son not only how to play with well with other musicians, but also how to find his “voice” within a band both in the rhythmic and solo sections of the songs.

He was accommodating when we had to reschedule a class due to personal reasons, and is always willing to make the class a little bit longer if necessary to finish what they were practicing.

When the Covid-19 pandemic forced us to have the lessons remotely, he started to use ZOOM and, while things remotely cannot be the same, he did a great job at making sure that they stayed as close to true form as possible.

"Worked with John for a few months with very little understanding of guitar. He went through chords I should learn and gave me practice suggestions. Also went into music theory per my request and explained in simple terms. By the end, I felt that I had a much greater understanding of music. John also worked to learn what music that I liked and wanted to play, so that he could introduce songs that would maintain my interest and be of an appropriate skill level for me to not get frustrated or bored with. Also worked with my schedule when needed and was very accommodating."

"First lesson- so far so good. I like that Eric gave me two things to practice. Also, I'm completely new to guitar, so what I'm practicing seems hard and feels super awkward, but I like that, because it gives me something to work at. I like that, even though I'm starting from the basics, Eric gave me something to practice that seems worth doing, instead of just going over string names and tuning, like some online beginner videos do. It's nice to feel like I'm practicing something worthwhile, even if it is just the first lesson :)"

"I've taken lessons with Oliver for a couple of years, and it's been great! He takes a practical approach to the lessons, not getting bogged down with a lot of music theory that, while really interesting, doesn't advance my skills on the guitar. Oliver is very enthusiastic and patient (which is important, as I'm a 60-year old trying to master something which doesn't come naturally to me - at all!). I highly recommend Oliver as a guitar instructor."

Their time together hasn't skipped a beat since we switched from in-home to online lessons. Andrew can pretty much do anything and play any song my son requests to learn. He keeps him on track to progress through lessons and also finds time to just jam with him for fun. Andrew is the best!"

"Ahmad is a fantastic instructor. He begins work by teaching proper technique with the type of music the student is interested in and goes from. He can work with interests from punk rock to classical, electric to acoustic, no theory to complex music theory. A very talented musician and an excellent, encouraging, patient instructor. My son was a music novice with an intense desire to learn and practice (2-4 hours a day). In just 18 months he advanced his music theory knowledge and skills so far that he was able to easily improvise jazz solos. You can't go wrong working with Ahmad!"
