A good teacher is one that enforces the basic foundations of technique. While any teacher can guide a student through vast amounts of repertoire, only the conscientious teacher prepares the student for all future endeavors and challenges. Nathan Whittaker's teaching philosophy consists of an unwavering understanding of technique, focusing on beauty of sound and elegance of expression. Thank you, Nathan!
I decided to play cello when I was 64 yrs old. Nathan was my first teacher. He brought me through most all facets of playing and learning the music. Although children may be the mainstay of cello teachers, Nathan had many adult students as well--at a range of levels. He always was an encouraging, engaging, supportive teacher for me. He's also a supreme player! He waited for the time I could summon the courage to play in a string orchestra and chamber groups within my first year or so. Besides sorting out orchestra music, we worked on all the challenges of clefs, position work, and musicality. I took lessons from him every week for 5 years. A first, marvelous, teacher stays with you for a long time. I still play, have a new teacher recommended by Nathan, and I still think of Nathan's lessons often!
So get a cello and take some lessons from him!

Nathan has a special knack for bringing out the best in students. You can tell he loves the cello and baroque music, but more importantly teaching what he knows to his students. He has a special positivity that makes every lesson successful and a joy! Highly recommended.

Over 15 or so years as an 'older' learner, with several instructors, I award Nathan with a superlative rating: all the qualities essential to me, met and exceeded: warm, funny, flexible, engaging, caring, intuitive, and astute musically. Superb performing cellist as well!! I miss greatly seeing him for encouragement and support~

In my lessons, my primary focus is helping students learn cello at their own pace, and developing their love and appreciation for music! Cello can be challenging, but anyone can learn with the right guidance! I have a conservatory training, and years of experience teaching people of all ages how to play. Students will learn technique, music reading, scales and arpeggios, and basic music theory in a comfortable and encouraging environment!

About Nick

I am a multi-instrumentalist from Queens, NYC, and I was the cellist/guitarist for the first national tour of the hit broadway show "Waitress". I trained as a classical cellist at the Aaron Copland School of Music, and I am a lifelong guitarist. Before starting my broadway career, I worked a

I so appreciated my first Lesson with Nick! We had planned to meet in person, but because of the current quarantine had to have class online - and it was wonderful! He was encouraging and clear and was able to diagnose some of my bad habits and give me ways to get past them. He also generously shared resources and repertoire. I'm much looking forward to continuing with him - just what I needed both musically and to keep my spirits up!

Great first lessons. I have 2 boys, each learning a different instrument (violin & guitar), and Nick was great with them. Looking forward to the future lessons.

While I certainly place emphasis on technical work and mastery, I also want all students to feel comfortable in expressing their individual voice and interests. I believe that it is incredibly important to encourage students to explore a number of creative avenues within music. Therefore, I am very open to having students explore music outside the classical canon in addition to experimenting with improvisation and composition. An additional component of my teaching style is finding unique and interesting ways to keep students motivated and teaching them how to effectively practice and learn on their own.

About Helen

My teaching philosophy is largely centered around the importance of individuality. The “one size fits all” approach is hardly ever adequate--every student has different needs, strengths, and challenges. While I certainly place emphasis on technical work and mastery, I also want all students to feel

I am an adult who has no experience with any type of instrument and was very nervous and intimidated at first. Then I met with Michael, and though there was a ton of information we had to go through, he really made me feel at ease. He has the knowledge, patience, and understanding I was really looking for in a teacher and I'm so happy I found him!

"Rob is a great teacher. I hired him to help me play a song at a friend's wedding, having not played cello in years. He had some really helpful tricks up his sleeve to help reinforce the things we went over in each lesson, like bow technique and posture.
Rob was also very flexible in terms of what we focused on at each lesson. Working with him, it's easy to tell that cello and teaching are both passions of his."

"Jessica is a very good and kind instructor. Perfect for my 12-year-old who has a sensitive heart when being corrected by others. She is patient and takes the time to come up with creative solutions when something isn't working as it should. As a parent, I appreciate the detailed notes she sends me letting me what happened in the lesson and what she'd like done during practice time. She also provides links to additional instruction videos if she feels like her explanation isn't making sense. I feel like she really goes beyond and wants to help them learn, not just assign practice pieces. Thanks, Jessica! - so glad we found you!"

Is Cello Hard to Learn? Read THIS Before Taking Lessons

Many beginning musicians wonder, “Is cello hard to learn?” The process of learning the cello is not difficult, but it’s important to keep in mind that the cello is not an instrument of instant gratification. It does require focused, daily practice time and a good teacher to guide you along the way. How far you progress with cello is a direct result of the amount of quality time you put into practicing the instrument. Even someone who puts in just 30 minutes a day will notice a signi …
