I have taught guitar since 2012 and have been playing since 2000. I am happy to take students at the beginner and intermediate levels. I believe strongly in integrating music theory and ultimately moving students toward musical self-suffiency, rather than focusing exclusively on learning particular pieces.

About Ben

Hi, there! My name is Ben and I can't wait to meet you! I've been teaching private lessons since 2012 and have taught students of all ages from 3 to adult. I have experience not just with teaching but also with writing, recording, and performing music in successful bands and on multiple instruments

Ben has been instructing my 2 kids (now aged 11 and 9) in-home for at least 5 years. We started off with piano for the first few years but then switched to a combination of piano and acoustic guitar (half a session dedicated to each instrument).

He is patient, kind, and highly knowledgeable. I clearly see the upward trajectory in my kids' musical capabilities. One of my kids can be difficult to deal with, especially when he is tired, but Ben would mold his approach to the lesson on the spot to keep my kid engaged (e.g., instead of continuing the lesson on the actual piano, he'd switch to a fun music-oriented game).

I hadn't played a musical instrument since elementary school when I started Ukulele lessons with Ben. Ben started from the beginning, answered all my questions along the way, and built upon that information in each lesson. It wasn't in a didactic way, but in a way that was really customized to fit my Ukulele lesson goals. Ben's teaching style is very flexible also. I had some Ukulele lesson books I had been gifted and we worked from those. I didn't feel that I had to buy a bunch of additional equipment, books, etc.

I recommend Ben as a music teacher. He is understanding, encouraging, and inspirational. I am looking forward to continuing lessons with Ben and JC Instrumental.

Ben has been working with our daughter since January 2019, when she turned 6 1/2. He arrives at our home on time each week and he works with her at an age appropriate level. We appreciate that he recognizes the effort she puts into the weeks when she practices often and he gently makes her aware when she hasn't practiced enough. He always speaks with her in a kind way and with us in a collaborative manner. We all want her to enjoy her piano experience, and we are thankful to have found Ben just a few blocks away from our home.

Ian is fantastic teacher. He was so patient with my toddler daughter. And when she became fuzzy during the class, Ian could be so creative to always come out with a way to calm her down and redirect her attention to other musical things. I would love him to be my daughter’s music teacher for as long as possible if I did not have to move.

Ian is very knowledgeable and is great in explaining theory and great in demonstrating so you can understand.

Just like many aspiring musicians, I know what it's like to struggle to improve, only to be told "just keep at it" or "practice your scales." Wondering HOW the players I see manage to access all the notes so quickly and make it look so easy. Their only explanation being "it's like this- *rips gnarly solo* Most teachers will give their students boring assignments and tell them that one day, you can move on to something else... NOT ME. I will provide you with the tools you need to learn. For example every chord on guitar, in one easily digestible PDF?!! The ability to download any video, slow it down, and learn it note by note using special software.

I know that these tools work because I taught myself how to play guitar! On my journey I took the time to create my own practice materials which simplify the guitar to it's most essential elements. I will share the method with you and teach you how to use it. Through my lessons, I will pass on the most critical, simplified versions of ...

The most important thing to me is to keep the student interested and engaged in the lessons. This way learning guitar is easy and fun, not a struggle. A great place to start is by learning songs you enjoy listening to. Then later moving on, applying theory and scales to the songs we have learned.

About Sam

Hi! I'm a recent graduate of Berklee College of music where I majored in professional music. This included music theory and guitar instruction, as well as reading and writing music notation and charts in different styles. I also play frequently, including shows at The 9:30 Club, The Howard Theater

Terrible experience. I bought a package of 20 lessons for my 9yo nephew. He looked forward to it ever day from Xmas to the first week of January. Sam canceled the first lesson only 2hours prior its beginning. Then canceled the second lesson 10 minutes before he was supposed to be there because he “forgot” he had a “recording session today”. During the only lesson my nephew had, Sam didn’t show any ability to tailor a lesson to a child. Instead he gave him a pick, which dismayed me, and taught him a rock song we never heard of.
When I contacted the company they were very nice about it but I had to challenge their vetting process of teachers.
Dara
It was an excellent lesson! I really learned a lot from it. I was able to learn one song and start on a second on my first lesson only! Definitely recommend Sam to anyone thinking about picking up the guitar!
Karen ..
Sam is awesome! He listened to my learning objectives and background, he instructs clearly (and kindly), and I’m super stoked for my next lesson.

"Mauricio has been a perfect fit as a guitar teacher for my ten year old son who, until meeting Mauricio, was totally apathetic about learning an instrument. The list of discared wood winds, strings, & percussion is long... Now my kiddo looks forward to his lessons because of Mauricio. He practices (during the week!!!), and he walks away from his time with Mauricio with the kind of happy grin on his face typically reserved for video games and nachos. Mauricio is ever punctual, solicitous, accommodating, friendly, and kind. We feel very lucky to have him in our lives and couldn't recommend him more highly to others."

"Jeff is a great teacher who helps you learn the guitar step-by-step with lots of great tips!

I started to learn guitar from Jeff when I was in the 5th grade and I have never regretted it. He has helped me improve so much that I can now solo off of songs and dissect popular songs to learn by myself. It's always so fun to play guitar with him, and he is always encouraging. He also teaches at my home which is really convenient. I always look forward to lessons to show him how I have improved. He is also really funny and entertaining. He has a lot of knowledge on guitar and music in general. Guitar has been a big part of my life and so has Jeff. I owe him all my thanks for teaching me how to enjoy and utilize the guitar beyond just learning chords and progressions."

"Jason has been providing in-home guitar instructions to one of my children for about 1.5 years. The entire experience has been truly and absolutely fantastic. He has a unique ability to be incredibly flexible in his teaching approach to best accommodate the individual student. Moreover, he's able to modify his approach given the particular circumstances on a particular date (perhaps the child is under the weather, crabby or a bit out of practice). Whatever the situation is, Jason is able to maximize the lesson and everybody leaves with a smile and some musical inspiration. Most importantly, individual lesson goals are consistently achieved and my child always has a clear understanding of what needs to happen before the next lesson (let's call it homework). Jason has been able to light the musical spark in my child and is continuing to provide the tools to get to the next level -- all while having fun. Jason has also fostered my child's musical creativity by supporting and fostering her creations and integrating that creativity into his lesson plans. In short, Jason is the best guitar teacher ever, hence the 5 stars!"

"Jonathan is fantastic with the kids - they came out excited to learn their instrument! He is using techniques that are more fun than what they previously had in lessons with other teachers. He recognizes the need to make it fun and current while learning at the same time. This makes the kids want to keep going and makes their instrument/music relevant to them. He is very knowledgeable and professional. We are thrilled to have him as our instructor!"

3 Things Every Guitarist Needs To Know About Songwriting

Writing a song can be one of the most satisfying experiences you'll have with your instrument! Guitar teacher Samuel B. shares three things every guitarist should know about writing a song on guitar... As a teacher, having you develop the ability to express yourself is my number one goal. Playing guitar solos is one form of personal expression. Writing songs is another. If you've never written a song, you might think of songwriting as something that only a few special people can do. In real …
