I am an emotive cellist with two decades experience. I have toured internationally performing my original works including London, Paris, and Berlin. As a member of the Pierce Quartet I regularly arrange and perform music for weddings and other special occasions. I love sharing classical music with all levels of students. Lessons with me are calm, meditative experiences where we use peaceful techniques to enter into the heart of music.

About Lenna

Hello musicians! My name is Lenna and I am pleased to meet you! I've been teaching private lessons since 2011 and have loved helping my students improve their tone, learn better sight reading skills, and become more relaxed in performance. Lenna has been Leah’s teacher for over 2 years. She enjoyed cello through her school program, but wanted to push herself further and learn more solo work. Not only did she love her lessons, but she greatly improved. So much so she was just accepted into LaGuardia for cello! Lenna — even virtually during COVID— encouraged Leah and inspired her to do her best. Needless to say it’s such a joy to see my teenager love to practice, look forward to playing with Lenna, and learning so much.

While I certainly place emphasis on technical work and mastery, I also want all students to feel comfortable in expressing their individual voice and interests. I believe that it is incredibly important to encourage students to explore a number of creative avenues within music. Therefore, I am very open to having students explore music outside the classical canon in addition to experimenting with improvisation and composition. An additional component of my teaching style is finding unique and interesting ways to keep students motivated and teaching them how to effectively practice and learn on their own.

About Helen

My teaching philosophy is largely centered around the importance of individuality. The “one size fits all” approach is hardly ever adequate--every student has different needs, strengths, and challenges. While I certainly place emphasis on technical work and mastery, I also want all students to f

My approach to teaching the cello incorporates mindfulness, body awareness, and deliberate practice, and I strongly believe in simplifying technique and practice methods, and leading you to your own discoveries rather than just telling you what to do. In order to reach your potential as a cellist, you need to train both the body and the mind. I am a strong believer in mental practice and being able to hear the sound you want before you play - however, this is only half the battle; you also want to set yourself up for success by training your body to feel comfortable and relaxed while still maintaining structure. I have studied with the top cello pedagogues in the world, including Hans Jensen, Richard Aaron, Ralph Kirshbaum, Desmond Hoebig, and Frans Helmerson to name a few. The methods I’ve learned and developed on my own can be taught from the very beginning of a cellist’s journey, and I can’t wait to share them with you!

About Lukas

I am a soloist, recitalist, and chamber musician and have performed all over the US and Europe. I am a recent graduate of the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University, and am currently pursuing my masters degree at the University of Southern California. Lukas was incredibly helpful as a teacher because it's clear that he's spent so much time over the last several years thinking about how the cello works and how to constantly be improving as a player. Lukas knows the best exercises to help solve whatever problems you may have as a player, and he has the real-world experience to back it up. I was particularly impressed by his ability to break down exactly what goes into creating a beautiful tone on the cello. He made me see my own technique differently and opened my eyes to aspects of cello playing that I had never thought of before. But most importantly, Lukas is a great teacher because he leads you to your own solutions. He won't just give you the answer to a specific passage of music, he will give you the tools to level up as a player, which you can then apply to anything you play. I would highly recommend taking lessons with Lukas Goodman.

Lukas has been a peer/colleague of mine for the past 6 years. As a conservatory student myself, I have often turned to Lukas for insight and help on various struggles I face as a cellist. As a cellist and technician, he has profound understanding of the fundamental concepts of playing the cello, whilst maintaining the ability to break things down in a simple and concise fashion. As an artist and musician, he constantly challenges himself for deeper expertise in so many facets of the art – both technically and musically.

Lukas has a clever sense of humor, is very bright, and void of arrogance (which I experienced so many times from teachers when I started out). I am certain he would provide a student of any level and goal with an adaptive, forward-focused approach. I cannot thank Lukas enough for the amount he has helped me, and I am certain he can do the same for so many others

From the foundations of technique to musical fluency and interpretation, I guide my students through the process of building freedom and confidence as well-rounded musicians. Mastering the instrument physically is as important as having a personal, emotional connection to the music we play, and understanding the workings of musical communication allows us to create those magical moments for ourselves and our listeners. Through my studies with renowned pedagogues such as Areta Zhulla and Joel Krosnick of the Juilliard Quartet, chamber music guru Merry Peckham, and world-renowned violinist Itzhak Perlman, I've developed a unique method for acquiring both effortless technique and the tools to make sense of any piece of music. I believe that every student can make incredible leaps in their musical ability as they discover their own powers of examination, exploration, and determination.

I have extensive experience with classical as well as contemporary music theory, history, and ...

Daniel has been teaching my 12 year old daughter cello for the last 3 years. He is a very attentive and patient teacher, with an excellent approach to his students. My daughter loves to go to his lessons, and has even enjoyed the Zoom lessons with Daniel over the last year. He has a lot of musical knowledge and has a delightful personality. I highly recommend him.

Daniel is an amazing teacher! I have been taking cello lessons from him for the last 5 years. I'm an older student (41 y.o), and started out with little musical experience and only a dream to play the cello. Daniel is so patient and supportive, with the most pleasant demeanor you can imagine. His musical knowledge runs deep, and his eclectic approach to playing and teaching the cello touches on a variety of musical genres, including classical, jazz, folk, and other styles. With his natural talent for teaching, Daniel is very sensitive to my stumbling blocks and difficulties in the lessons, and is so helpful with his clear instructions in how to break down and solve the problems. Most of all, his lessons and wisdom are very inspiring, and I am always looking forward to our next meeting. I wholeheartedly recommend Daniel as a music teacher.

The gift of learning to play music is a skill you can develop and use for the rest of your life as I started when I was 9 years old. The cello has a range and voice that sings like no other instrument. I was classically trained at Indiana University's School of Music. I have a traditional approach by teaching scales, etudes and a standard cello repertoire. Though children may start out on an instrument when they are younger, I expect my students to commit to their instruments as lessons are an expensive investment for their parents. When the child or adult is ready, I encourage him/her to play/audition for an ensemble of her choice to build musicianship. I have been teaching private lessons to children and adults for 17 years and I incorporate music theory as part of the total lesson. I have performed as a solo cellist, as a chamber musician on treble and bass viola da gamba with the Cisraritarian Consort of Viols and as principal cellist in Livingston Symphony Orchestra and People's

Sheryl was my teacher from early elementary school until high school graduation, and thus witnessed my growth as a cellist from total beginner to advanced intermediate. A phenomenal instructor, she led with a relaxed and patient demeanor that always put me at ease, no matter how prepared I was for my weekly lesson. Yes, she held high expectations for my development, but she was also always willing to help me when I struggled and to demonstrate certain passages or techniques when need be (she's a super talented cellist herself!). Throughout our lessons, she placed a firm emphasis on both technique and artistry, helping me become a well-rounded soloist and orchestra member. I give Sheryl a ton of credit for instilling in me a love of music that has lasted to this day, and would highly recommend her to any aspiring cellist!

"Out of all the instructors I’ve had (instructors with PhDs and over twenty years of experience teaching cello), Chialing is the best by far. I’ve been taking lessons with her for a little over a year and a half and I know that aside from her general likability, she is very diligent and detail-oriented—characteristics essential to fixing technique problems sometimes rooted in even the slightest improper finger placement. Furthermore, she quickly re-explains concepts in new ways until I understand them both conceptually and physically. She also goes out of her way to find drills tailored toward keeping current skills sharp and improving weak skills. She will work with you to ensure you keep improving and stay interested in the piece and drills you’re working on. She won’t disappoint."

I have play around with some fretted instruments, ukulele, banjo, etc. But Irina was super at getting me relaxed, focused on basics and encouraging me with small, but important mechanics and technical details.
