I enjoyed playing piano and electric piano and won the 1st prize at Kitakantou Electric Piano Competition hosted by YAMAHA institute. Because of the intensive training, I have been accompanying my students' recitals and performance exams.
As much as I enjoyed playing piano, I discovered that I also love singing, so I started to take singing lessons and majored in vocal performance during my college days.
Since I have graduated, I have been performing opera professionally. My career highlights include roles as Cio-cio san(Madame Butterfly) with Snob Opera, Montreal, Quebec, Canada, Fairy(Falstaff) with Sir B
My international credits include performances under the direction of Conductor Laurent Pillot at the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Liverpool, England;the Académie Internationale d'Eté de Nice, France; the Daniel Ferro Vocal Program in Chianti,Italy; the International Vocal Arts Institute in Tel Aviv, Israel where I was selected to sing for the Japanese Ambassador.
I made appearances as a soloist at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Symphony Space, Town Hall, and MOMA museum in New York City and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Hall.
As a versatile singer, I was presented as an aspiring opera singer on the website of Maybelline New York. Her voice was featured in short films for the Japanese technology company NEC. I appeared as a soprano soloist for the opera, Jazz and theater collaboration of "TAKE ABITE" by David Antonio Cruz. I also sings Broadway songs and continues her musical theater studies. She is an active recitalist and also performs Oratorio works.
I was also a finalist at the Opera Idol Competition at Lincoln Center in New York City, The Hariclea Darclée Voice Competition in Romania and the Mario Lanza and Elaine Malbin Vocal Competition in New York City. Ms. Uchida was selected as a vocal scholarship recipient at Savannah music festival.
Her upcoming engagements in 2019 include performing concerts with Philharmonie Teplice, Neubrandenburg, Germany, the title role of Lucia di Lammermoore and a lieder recital with Opera After Hours, New York. Ms. Uchida gave a recital hosted by Russian Cultural Center in Kiev 2019. Asuka is invited to give a recital at Festival dell’arte in Wojanow, Poland in August 2019.
Besides being an opera singer, I have been teaching piano and voice for 11 years. I would like to share my skills and experience with you. Since I perform often, I can coach you how to perform on stage in addition to building solid technique and languages. Also, I have taught various kinds of music, such as Rock, Broadway musicals, Pop music, so we can work on all kind of music.

I can demonstrate various and specific techniques, phrasing, and interpretation and will always coach on how to develop your skills. I cannot emphasize enough that primarily it is you who find the ways to improve. Leaning music is a collaboration between teachers and students. I hope that through my lessons, students will become more self-sufficient and confident as musicians.

Now with Asuka he feels most comfortable and feels he learns more per lesson with Asuka. More progress with all aspects of voice. She helps prepare for auditions with Broadway vocals and advance on the more serious and challenging Opera selections.
So the actual lessons are great and Asuka is also a charm; engaging and personable. As the parent I very much like she remains a professional singer as her career.
So we are staying with Asuka through the breaks and may even extend into piano lessons as well.

It is a body-based method of vocal training which is based upon voice science and medicine, traditional classical training, and various bodywork approaches. Vocal health is an important component of everything I teach, and I work to eliminate strain and vocal fatigue. OTHER LESSON INFORMATION
SINGING: Bel Canto singing technique for the modern singer is taught in private and group classes. No one sounds like old opera singers, even if the student wants to sing opera. Students are allowed to choose most of the material they learn in the lesson. There will be times when Rachel will suggest a song to a student but if the student doesn't enjoy the song, they will work as a team to find a song that does work for the student. Gain a better tone quality, complete control of your voice, bigger range, more flexibility, and confidence. Learn healthy voice technique, how to fully take care of your own voice so you can sing for the rest of your life (even after lessons), and become a self sufficient performer for life.
ACTING: Stella Adler, Stanislavsky, Chekhov, and Meisner Acting Technique for Theatre/Camera is taught in private and group classes. All students are exposed to each technique and Rachel sees which technique each student responds to the most. Once the student and Rachel are able to identify the technique, Rachel continues to use the terminology of that technique for the remainder of the time the student is in lessons. Students eventually are able to play roles truthfully and realistically, even if the roles are opposite of the student's own personality.
BY THE TIME STUDENTS GRADUATE FROM LESSONS:
1. Gain a lifelong, solid, consistent, and healthy technique that they can always count on in practice and performance.
2. Gain specific technical and personal notes in a notebook and/or computer file that is organized and always accessible for review.
3. Gain artistry, performance skills, and a strong voice that will look/sound authentic; Singers will sound appropriate to whatever style of music they are singing. (No fake sound or look.) Actors will just be in the moment and truthful whether they are on stage or in front of the camera.
4. Gain the confidence to always put on a great performance.
5. Gain focus and a more productive mind frame.
6. Become self-sufficient by knowing how to assess a problem and then fix it without creating a new issue.

We specialize in Bel Canto voice technique for the modern singer. Each student can sing all genres without sounding too classical, "fake", and without losing their voice while singing for long periods of time.
Other Specialties: Teaching acting technique for theatre-TV-Film (Stella Adler, Stanislavsky, Chekhov, & Meisner), performance skills, songwriting, and creating self-sufficient singers-actors-performers (Artist Development).
CANCELLATION: 48 hour lesson cancellation policy and emergencies (determined by Rachel) are handled on a case by case basis. All students (or their parents/guardian if under 18) who have scheduled vacations and other activities (meetings, parties, school shows, concerts, rehearsals...etc) that interfere with the student’s regularly scheduled lesson time, need to contact Rachel as soon as the vacation/other activity is scheduled but no later than two weeks in advanced before their missed regularly scheduled lesson to prevent from forfeiting the lesson.
MAKE-UPS: Make-Up lessons will be scheduled if time allows. No Make-Up lesson or class will be given to ‘no shows’ or “late cancellation”, and no extra time to extend their lesson will be given to students who are late to their lesson or class. If there is ever a time Rachel is running late, extra time will be given to make the lesson a full 60 minutes. If Rachel needs to reschedule, a Make-Up lesson will be scheduled as close to the same week as possible. Make-Up lessons are scheduled at Rachel’s discretion.
ONLINE LESSONS FOR IN-PERSON LESSON CLIENTS: In the event that the student is sick but still would like their lesson, an online lesson will be scheduled instead. Students can NOT come to their in person lesson sick, coughing, sneezing, with a runny nose, cold, flu, allergies, fever, etc. (This is to make sure no germs will be spread).
An online lesson will also be scheduled if there is bad weather, if a student is having car trouble, or any other reason for the student not being able to physically get to Rachel’s private studio during their normally scheduled lesson time. Online lessons are conducted through Classroom, FaceTime, Google, Hangouts, or Skype.
Lessons are weekly, on the same time/day of the week unless we have rescheduled or we have discussed in writing another lesson plan. If the student’s lesson falls on a holiday, we will either reschedule or if no other day is available, resume the following week.
If a student is going to be late they need to contact Rachel as soon as possible, to let her know they will be late. Lessons will end on time unless she is able to extend the lesson due to a late student or her schedule allows for it though please understand, Rachel would be extending a courtesy and would not be obligated to do so. If on the rare occasion Rachel is running late, she will always make up the time.
Parents/Guardians are ONLY permitted to stay for the first lesson and are NOT permitted to sit in for any other lesson/class unless invited. This is to promote good/strong teacher-student relationship quickly and easily. Also, many times students feel more comfortable when their parents/guardians leave. Of course there will be times when the parent will be invited back in at the end of some of the lesson to showcase progress.
COMMUNICATION: Due to Rachel's normally scheduling students one right after another without breaks, being in the recording studio, performing, or being on set, the best way to contact her is through text AND email. Please ALWAYS leave messages when calling Rachel with your name, contact info, AND the reason you are calling. Please be specific. Thank you!

Voice lessons for a student interested in studying Classical Voice by way of Opera Arias and Art Songs
Our singing voice is the instrument that we were each born to play. My goal is to make singing effortless and enjoyable and to help my students build confidence in themselves by developing their instrument.
Together we will work on breathing, speaking and vocal exercises as well as appropriate repertoire singing with beautiful Italian vowels, free of tension and with emphasis on emotional purpose.
It would be my pleasure to work with my students on basic music theory. I can also help students prepare their voices for public speaking engagements.

Students will learn the proper Italian traditions of the Bel Canto style first and eventually how to appropriately apply these traditions to the later Verismo style of singing opera if vocally appropriate for the student.
These lessons will start with the same approach as the classical voice lessons since the same bel canto technique is fundamental and necessary to performing Verismo. We will go over what is appropriate to the various opera styles.
All singing lessons begin at age 13.

There is nothing more compelling than a voice that is natural and confident in their ability and accessing technique consistently is vital to creating this assurance and peace.
I am able to rapidly diagnosis a full range of vocal issues and begin to work towards strengthening deficient elements in relation and respect to the singer’s entire technique.
This will take time, but I make it clear exactly why this is the focus so we can work efficiently and cooperatively together.
It is important to reveal issues in a highly apparent manner, yet to be supportive and respectful of the student’s voice while motivating change to take place. I try to make it extremely clear through the exercises and rep I personally select to highlight a capability that is lacking by giving a student the right challenges where they can see they are not fully demonstrating a vocal element.
It often times is things they have been told in the past, but aren’t able to identify the problem due to lack of clarity clouded by other elements from past instruction or not provided the right tools to overcome their vocal issues in a realistic way that leads to continue success in their process. Meaning I really isolate and get to the heart of issues.
I have a signature method of highlighting issues and making corrections. I am very particular about explaining the process so that it makes sense to each student and can be accessible for them.
Another strength I have is I am able to identify the student’s learning style and am resourceful in the way I teach.
I believe it is the student’s responsibility to put in their own words as they instruct themselves in the end, therefore and WE WILL go over thoughtless how to do this all on your own and get yourself to this point eventually because YOU MUST rely on yourself first.
Besides being a practical issue, it can be an emotional one, that I can help guide you towards feeling confident. Good technique and results will be provided throughout our work to encourage that this is the case.
Every necessary element required for excellent singing will be explained. It is not possible in one or two lessons however.
It is real time and work. I do require you trust the process to a reasonable degree and that I have your best intentions at heart. I have worked with many issues and types of people and have a lot of insight to pull from. Mostly people think their issues are unique, when in reality they are common. Not do I get easily confused. So rest assure.
I can confidently say, almost more than any other instructor you have had we will thoroughly go over every element.
It is necessary that a student knows the difference to maintain what is already good about their technique so they do not expel or replace it while working on their challenges. I cannot emphasis this enough. I have found this to be the biggest issue with passing on good instruction in the last 40 years from all institutes of voice.
Every voice comes in with something to build upon. There is not one voice, even the most challenging that doesn’t have an element right, it just might not be used appropriately while lacking all the other supportive elements, however it is there and that’s where we will start if that’s the case.
That’s why so many students, particularly very talented ones get lost in their training, because they do not realize that this has happened, so their natural abilities they cannot explain if they become teachers or professionals, which you must be able to explain everything or worst, they lose their natural ability and do not understand why.
This is also another fear of people who have natural ability, but if you have an instructor who understands you and this, you will be in good hands to find greater success vocally.
We need to identify our technique simply and readily every time in a way that we can articulate to ourselves.
This is a process and hard work (particularly emotional/reasonable expectation) is required on your end. More importantly developing trust for the process because what you do with your voice is up to you in the end alone and to displace that is neither helpful or honest. It is your voice! Always.

I am a dramatic soprano and I have continued my vocal studies vigorously with Mrs. Fabian Bravo, a long term principal singer at The Met, who was taught formerly by Mr. Luciano Pavarotti.
I am very confident in the Italian Bel Canto technique and extensively in all popular genres, including jazz, ballads, R&B, Broadway, traditional, etc.
Technique I cover is finding legitimate support via fully integrating the body, muscle release (throat, spine, tongue, facial, soft palate and accessing resonators directly, releasing the larynx and opening chest and head and mixing appropriately with highly disciplined air and body support) legitimate dynamics with muscles released/throat open, creating internal naturally cover space that can thoroughly release the voice through the skull and centered in which the air pressure/direction determines the dynamics, while not improperly closing the muscles or inappropriately moving the larynx/overly directing and dropping into one register, proper articulation that enhances/does not interrupt or cut off breath support/the body inappropriately/use of compressed air and direction that directly effects head voice, chest, middle mix access that most professionals do not have disciplined and create through other secondary means. This is more all equates to flexibility, strength and freedom to be endlessly expressive. Everything in balance and relation to become competent and proficient. The best part is really being able to enjoy your singing in the moment.

Catherine received her education from Boston University where she received a BM degree in Vocal Performance.
