About Carolyn
Coming from a large extended family in Hawaii, I was surrounded by luau music, kachi-kachi dancing, Japanese bon dances, handsome local guys singing and playing their guitars and my aunties strumming their ukes and singing old songs. I reveled in walking alone in Nature or playing piano and singing in empty, stain-glassed churches – just wailing in the dark and colored light!

I studied: classical piano, organ, oboe, clarinet, violin, voice, and guitar. I sang in jazz trios and pop bands, earned income as a church organist/choir accompanist, and spent 15 years teaching private piano lessons to students of all ages.
I studied drawing and painting, I drew trees, animals, the ocean, sky and mountains, still life, and the people around me.

Upon arriving in New York City, I entered into a journey of playing at a Washington Heights gos
pel church, living in a building filled with musicians, accompanying vocal master classes, studying Sanskrit, Indian raga, world percussion, creative arts therapy and performance wellness.

I now compose and sing my songs - interweaving voice with keyboard or guitar. Besides teaching privately, I can be found performing my songs in clubs, outdoor festivals, coffee houses, and poetry/healing events. I currently attended a certificate program in sound & music healing and the focus of my music rests here. I incorporate many techniques to aid students in relaxation, breath awareness, and de-stressing.

Using traditional teaching methods, I create meaningful experiences for students by:
- being patient, flexible and creative in approach
- using visual, aural, and tactile teaching tools

I'm an experienced teacher of 12+ years, equally comfortable with kids and life-long learners. I'm very curious and always learning, and I love to share that inquisitive spirit with my students. Lessons will be structured around music that you enjoy, whether that is rock, classical, or jazz. Music theory and technique will be incorporated into the lesson from day one, but never at the expense of making music! I hold a B.M. in jazz performance and a M.M. in classical performance, and have performed all over the world. Let's set up your first lesson!

About Joshua
I have been a full-time performer and teacher for over a decade. I hold a Masters degree in classical performance from the Cleveland Institute of Music, where I studied with Grammy award-winning guitarist Jason Vieaux, and I hold an undergraduate degree from the University of the Arts in jazz performance. My performance career has taken me across the United States, to Europe, and to Asia. Highlights from the 2016-17 concert season include performances with the Columbus Symphony with soloist Rachel Barton-Pine and CityMusic Cleveland Chamber Orchestra, among others. The 2017-18 concert season includes concerts in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Ohio.

I'm a specialist in Brazilian Guitar and have played and used American Folk Styles to teach finger picking for many years. This includes Travis Picking, Blues and arrangement of all sorts of melodies for guitar. One of the first world musics I played was Irish music and I have a nice repertoire of these melodies to help the student learn how to play a linear melody. Reading is not necessary but I'm expert at getting people to read by using simple familiar music.

About Billy
Billy N. has played Jazz, Brazilian and Classical music in the NYC area for the last 20 years. He has actively taught both finger-style and pick guitar for the last 20 years. He was on staff at the American Institute of Guitar for 11 years. His book on Brazilian Guitar is published by Alfred Music and currently available. He now offers online lessons via Skype as well as in his private studio. Playing credits include many museums and clubs in the NY area including Museum of Modern Art Museum of the City of NY and an extended stay at the Guggenheim museum in the Summer of 2000. Also he has been in the Brooklyn Museum concert series with his group Afinidades Bronx Libraries Brooklyn College and the Jewish Museum in trio and duo setting with great Percussionist Vanderlei Pereira. He has performed in Brazil as well most recently in the South
of Brazil,  receiving TV and radio coverage. He has also done workshops and performed at the Conservatory of the state of Pernambuco. In August 2004 he performed weekly at Rio Scenarium in Rio de Janeiro. His Band Brooklyn Brazil Bop has played at Joe's Pub as well as Central Park Festival. His band the Brazilian Acoustic ensemble performs periodically at 'Barbes' an important performance space in Brooklyn NY. In 2007 he gave a successful jazz workshop and concert in the city of Florianopolis Brazil. Billy has been awarded 3 prestigious composer's residencies 2006 - Yaddo and 2007 - The MacDowell Colony. He was featured on the PBS news hour during his residence at MacDowell. In 2008 he was awarded another MacDowell residency and followed this with a 3 hour appearance presenting his compositions live on WKCR Jazz Radio and another live radio appearance with band in 2010. Billy regularly plays in many venues around NY in Jazz trio settings as well as with Brazilian vocalists and instrumentalists. Most Recently his groups have been performing at the famed Cornelia Street Cafe in New York City. He also specializes in solo guitar and can double on percussion (Pandeiro) and Cavaquinho. Billy has completed two CD's of his original music and an EP of his original Choro music. He has a BFA in Jazz Performance from CCNY.

Testimonials:
From Coda Magazine August 2012: by Seton Hawkins

Through outstanding collaborations like the Brazilian Acoustic Ensemble, guitarist and composer Billy N has emerged as a leading exponent of the music of Brazil. Exploring far beyond the well-trodden bossa nova path. Billy unearths the full range of styles the country offers, including choro, baiào, valsa and samba, and gives American audiences a rich panoramic glimpse into Brazilian art, highlighting its parallels with progressive jazz.

A recipient of composers residencies at Yaddo and MacDowell Colony, he is the curator of a three-day series at the club dedicated to the country's music. Billy will showcase his own group—a sextet with drummer Matt Kane, bassist Leco Reis, saxophonists Michael Attias and Eric Schugren and trumpeter Ben Holmes—in a concert primarily featuring his original works. SH

Reviews of my Book on Alfred Brazil: Guitar Atlas,  I love this series and this is the best of the six titles I have. Billy really knows his stuff; the analysis of time at the beginning is superb: something I now use in my teaching. This is definitely for intermediate and higher guitarists, but the pieces are worth the effort to get right, and the accompanying CD shows you what you are aiming for. This is as good as my other Brazilian guitar book (by Nelson Faria) and much more compact and easier to follow. Highly recommended!

#2

This book is essential homework for students of Brazilian guitar. It is one of the best resources out there, along with Nelson Faria's "The Brazilian Guitar Book." The original etudes are not only instructional, but are nice pieces in their own right. An excellent value.

*** Lesson Details ***
I've taught all levels over 20 years both in NYC and Brazil. I work with the material that the student wants and also through recordings and charts introduce much music that the student might have been unfamiliar with. My lessons are catered to the individual. There is no obstacle anyone has that is too great to work through. My approach to rhythmic training has helped many. I have simple way of breaking down the guitar fingerboard which can used as a guide to learn harmony. I'll get you into the horizontal aspects of guitar, traveling across the neck, making music across one string as well, mastering the guitar in a small fret range - " vertical position playing".

*** Studio Equipment ***
I have guitar for the student, either electric or nylon. Cavaquinho students bring their instrument. First time students must bring their instrument so I can see what they are playing on.

*** Specialties ***
Brazilian Fingerstyle - Choro, Samba, Baiao Solo
Jazz Guitar - Pick or Fingers
Beginning Flamenco

Improvisation for any instrument

I have been taking lessons with Billy since January 2015. I am a total beginner and I really think I have made the best choice ever to pick him as my teacher. Billy is an experienced guitar teacher and a professional player that knows great techniques for beginners. He has been teaching me basics of guitar in a smart way, and at each lesson I feel I learn something new and at the same time I can clearly see how much progress I have made since our first lesson. He has also been teaching me how to read music and tabs which proofed to be extremely useful every time I want to learn a new song by myself. Highly recommended!

I cannot recommend Billy enough. I studied jazz improvisation with Billy for three years, and later returned to study Brazilian guitar and Piedmont-style finger picking with him. I had been playing for more than twenty years when I started studying with him and he not only helped me improve my playing technically and creatively (on electric and nylon stringed guitars) but also expanded my knowledge of theory and helped me develop new approaches to composing and arranging. I am still working with the material he gave me and take lessons from him whenever my schedule allows.

I took Brazilian guitar lessons from Billy for several years. His method focuses on absorbing the many rhythms of Brazil and translating them from percussion instruments to the guitar. Much of his effort is devoted on achieving the elusive Brazilian swing, which non Brazilians need to learn. Billy is excellent in breaking down the rhythms and explaining them. He even has a book out on his method. He covers various Brazilian genres: choro, bossa nova, samba, baiao and more.
Billy also is an accomplished jazz, classical and flamenco guitarist with a thorough understanding of harmony and improvisation. He is very patient and has years of teaching and performance experience. You will be lucky to study with him!

I found Keith to be very reliable, patient, knowledge in several subjects, flexible with problem solving and understanding of children's moods and personalities. He comes with a wide array of talent and is willing to meet your child at his/her interest level and learning style. He even switched from tutoring reading to art because my child totally refused to be tutored in reading.
He came prepared and on time every time, ready to tutor in either subject because my child was difficult, uncooperative and would not stick to her scheduled sessions. Through all this Keith remained dedicated, supportive and patient. He worked with us even to the premature ending of our sessions, and even then he remained understanding and supportive of our decision to end.
If there's one tutor I'd recommend; it would be Keith. He WILL make every effort to reach your child and engage them in the learning process to attain positive growth and development, you will NOT be disappointed in any way.

Keith has done a wonderful job introducing my son Thomas to bass guitar. From the first lesson my son enjoyed Keith's style of teaching. Keith is very flexible in adjusting to the learning style of the student. My son had particular songs he wanted to learn and Keith was open to helping him become familiar with the instrument through the songs that appealed to Thomas. I would highly recommend Keith for students at all levels. Keith is an experienced, personable, and talented teacher.

About Steve
Steve has been teaching private lessons since 1995 and is currently available to teach lessons at his studio or at your home. Steve has helped students learn how to play Guitar, Bass, Mandolin and Ukulele. His favorite styles are Rock, Blues, Folk and Bluegrass.

Steve received his training at Berklee College of Music where he received a degree in songwriting and performance. Steve keeps busy as a professional songwriter and accompanist: he plays behind many singer/songwriters, and has toured the states and Europe.

Steve looks forward to sharing his love for music and helping new students achieve their goals. Steve's teaching style is song-based: teaching student songs by bands they love, therefor giving them the motivation to practice and get better. From there, the lessons expand from chords to rhythm, scales and music theory. S

Our son learned to play the guitar with Steve when he was 11 or 12 years old. Steve was always fun, friendly and patient. He is a natural teacher. Our son had a very easy time relating to Steve and always looked forward to his weekly lessons. Steve was his teacher for several years and went above and beyond what was expected of him, for example by attending our son's performances with his school band. Steve instilled in our son what I am sure will be a life long love of playing the guitar. Our son is now 18 and is still extremely into the guitar, so much so that he won a Young Arts award and was accepted to the 2017 Grammy Jazz Camp. While Steve moved away from Cambridge (where we live) to Brooklyn for family reasons, they still stay in close touch, which is a testament to the great teacher-student relationship they had.

About Jimmy
I have enjoyed music from a very young age and been teaching since the age of fifteen. I have performed as a guitarist and vocalist in solo and duo shows in addition to jazz combo and wedding bands. I love many different kinds of music and I especially connect with classics from the 50's, 60's and 70's. What do you connect with? When I learn about your influences, we will use them to tailor your lessons to YOU.

When I was young I remember teachers who I really enjoyed, and also those I didn't. I try to teach in a way that makes you as the student feel good about your progress and potential. You will always look forward to our lessons together. Prior to relocating to NY, I worked as a private guitar teacher in SC.

In addition to recording, performing, and teaching music. I have also worked in the IT industry and done technical training.
I have held roles where teaching and communication skills were essential. This translates really well to music education.

Jimmy was an outstanding teacher who saw my potential and had a very well organized and structured lesson plan to help bring me to my next level of understanding music and the relationship that each chord had within its group. He made learning fun and exciting, while coaxing me to unleash my abilities and relax. As a result, I now have the knowledge and confidence to help others unlock their potential. Highly recommended! If you're interested in both playing and songwriting/composing in a variety of genres, look no further! I'm especially equipped to teach fingerstyle classical guitar, since I studied for several years at an accredited university in pursuit of a music education degree. I have the rare diversity of being classically trained, while sill being highly involved and interested in metal (trash metal, death metal, etc.), indie, punk, and more. I am also an active songwriting/composer of various different genres. I look forward to working with you!

About Dylan
Hello! I'm a classical trained guitarist with interests in numerous subgenres of rock and metal. What this means is that I've studied the nylon string classical guitar for many years; working meticulously on specific, fingerstyle technique as well as reading sheet music. I've played many classical concerts both solo and in ensembles.
On the other hand, I've also played in and wrote music for progressive death metal bands, punk bands, and indie rock bands. If you're looking for solid, classically influenced technique without sacrificing your interest in rock, metal, etc., look no further.

Learn to play guitar with a receptive, patient, and thoughtful teacher who will meet you where you are-- all skill levels and ages are welcome.

About Daniel
I offer personalized lessons that will offer the proper amount of challenge based on the level of my students. I have been a musician for more than 12 years and I have spent time finding the most effective ways to teach music regardless of age or skill level. I truly believe in the value of music, and I have successfully been teaching in an NYC Public School as a multi-subject teacher for several years. I offer music lessons when I am not in the classroom in an attempt to help others expand their musical capabilities and knowledge of relevant musical concepts. My method of teaching involves identifying areas with room for growth for my students, and then coming up with one or a few goals to strive for. I believe that the most effective way to improve as a musician is by gradually training and practicing the way we think about and compose
music.

I offer beginner and intermediate lessons for all skill levels and ages. I have experience with teaching music through a variety of approaches and I am happy to focus on teaching either one or multiple different instruments. One of my specialties is teaching beatboxing either on it's own or in addition to other instruments.
