Classical technique from the Italian school, repertoire based on voice type, age, and ability level.
Jessica Winn has been studying and performing classical music for over 20 years. Her relationship with music started at age 9 with the Contra Costa Children's Choir and she has maintained her classical vocal studies ever since. Along with her vocal studies, Jessica studied classical piano privately with Keith Snell for 7 years, competing and achieving high marks in regional competitions. She went on to receive her Bachelor's degree in Music at Mannes College of Music in New York City and finished her education at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, where she received her Masters, receiving training in vocal pedagogy and physiology, as well as vocal pe
Jessica has maintained an active voice and piano studio since 2011, leading her students to high musical achievements in both fields, and is a Master Vocal coach at Acalanes High School. Other teaching experience includes Musical Theater Camp Director for the Heads Up Program at Head Royce in Oakland and Village Center for the Arts, giving private lessons, leading In-School Outreach Programs throughout the Bay Area, and heading their Musical Theater program.
Jessica is an active performer in the Bay Area as well, performing with Opera San Jose, Phenix Opera, Berkeley Chamber Opera, Verismo Opera, West Edge Opera and Marin Baroque. Jessica has also been employed as a performer on the east coast, making her professional debut with the Hartford Symphony Orchestra in 2011 and with The Manhattan Opera Studio.
*** Lesson Details ***
In my lessons, I feel it is important for my students to have fun and to and enjoy the learning process. However I believe in order for both student and teacher to get the most out of the lesson, practicing at home is extremely important and I expect my students to do so. I will always send them home with a goal or assignment that should be reached or completed by the next lesson to the best of the students ability.
For my voice students, we always begin with breath. Proper breathing is the foundation for all good singing. Then we move on to warming up both the voice and the body. During warm-ups, we will focus technical concepts such as breath control and support, vowel placement, and optimum vocal production. In most lessons (time permitting) we will work through a piece of music, one of their choosing or, if needed, I will recommend a piece. We finish each lesson with a review of the concepts we discussed during the lesson and practice goals for the week.
For my piano students, I begin with finger placement and keyboard awareness. Depending on the students age and level, we will use both a music book and a music theory book (for very young students, I will hold off on the music theory and focus mostly on finger placement and keyboard awareness). Each week, I will assign two pieces of music and pages in the music theory book (again depending upon student's age and level). Students are expected to prepare the assignments by practicing at home and have them ready at the next lesson.
Communication is something very important to me as a teacher. I want my students to feel comfortable expressing their needs and/or concerns, musically or otherwise and hope they would appreciate me, as the teacher, to do the same.
*** Specialties ***
Classical voice is definitely my specialty. I believe good classical technique is the basis for all good singing and can be applied to ALL musical genres.

I'm always impressed with how Jessica is patient with our 7 year old daughter and still is able to draw her out and motivate her when she is tired from school. Jessica always finds creative ways to be inspirational. Both my husband and I drive 15 miles to be able to have Jessica teach our little girl. We think she is worth it. She has been flexible and always tried her best to work within our schedule and has even driven out to our house to cover a lesson when things didn't work out in the schedule.

Jessica is teaching piano and voice to my 10 year daughter, and I am so impressed with her skills as a teacher. She is patient, encouraging, and inspiring, and her love for both music and teaching is apparent. She is also extremely knowledgeable about music theory and uses a teaching method that's very effective and gets students actually playing music right away, without shortchanging their long term development as musicians. Jessica is a rare find, plus she comes to our house for lessons!

Whether you are a parent looking for instruction for your child, or for yourself, Rachel can customize the right program that best suits your needs. Her students come from all walks of life and have different goals, but they all have one thing in common. They love performing and have the desire to be the best at their chosen craft (singing/acting).
Some students want to sing/act for themselves, others want to sing/act for a hobby, and others want to be professional performers. That's where Rachel comes in. No matter what your goals are, she can help. Rachel teaches her students how to become true artists without tearing them down and without taking away the part of them that makes them unique. She teaches healthy technique that is based off of the human anatomy; the science of how the body/mind works and how the body/mind can work as efficiently as possible while singing or acting.
Learning how to sing/act is a process and doesn't happen overnight. Rachel's ultimate goal as a teacher is to not only make her students the best performers and singers they can be, but also give them all of the proper tools they need to have a more productive mind frame and become self-sufficient. Of course this can take years to master. It takes time and dedication.
OTHER LESSON INFORMATION
SINGING: Bel Canto singing technique for the modern singer is taught in private and group classes. No one sounds like old opera singers, even if the student wants to sing opera. Students are allowed to choose most of the material they learn in the lesson. There will be times when Rachel will suggest a song to a student but if the student doesn't enjoy the song, they will work as a team to find a song that does work for the student. Gain a better tone quality, complete control of your voice, bigger range, more flexibility, and confidence. Learn healthy voice technique, how to fully take care of your own voice so you can sing for the rest of your life (even after lessons), and become a self sufficient performer for life.
ACTING: Stella Adler, Stanislavsky, Chekhov, and Meisner Acting Technique for Theatre/Camera is taught in private and group classes. All students are exposed to each technique and Rachel sees which technique each student responds to the most. Once the student and Rachel are able to identify the technique, Rachel continues to use the terminology of that technique for the remainder of the time the student is in lessons. Students eventually are able to play roles truthfully and realistically, even if the roles are opposite of the student's own personality.
BY THE TIME STUDENTS GRADUATE FROM LESSONS:
1. Gain a lifelong, solid, consistent, and healthy technique that they can always count on in practice and performance.
2. Gain specific technical and personal notes in a notebook and/or computer file that is organized and always accessible for review.
3. Gain artistry, performance skills, and a strong voice that will look/sound authentic; Singers will sound appropriate to whatever style of music they are singing. (No fake sound or look.) Actors will just be in the moment and truthful whether they are on stage or in front of the camera.
4. Gain the confidence to always put on a great performance.
5. Gain focus and a more productive mind frame.
6. Become self-sufficient by knowing how to assess a problem and then fix it without creating a new issue.

*** Specialties ***
We specialize in Bel Canto voice technique for the modern singer. Each student can sing all genres without sounding too classical, "fake", and without losing their voice while singing for long periods of time.
Other Specialties: Teaching acting technique for theatre-TV-Film (Stella Adler, Stanislavsky, Chekhov, & Meisner), performance skills, songwriting, and creating self-sufficient singers-actors-performers (Artist Development).
CANCELLATION: 48 hour lesson cancellation policy and emergencies (determined by Rachel) are handled on a case by case basis. All students (or their parents/guardian if under 18) who have scheduled vacations and other activities (meetings, parties, school shows, concerts, rehearsals...etc) that interfere with the student’s regularly scheduled lesson time, need to contact Rachel as soon as the vacation/other activity is scheduled but no later than two weeks in advanced before their missed regularly scheduled lesson to prevent from forfeiting the lesson.
MAKE-UPS: Make-Up lessons will be scheduled if time allows. No Make-Up lesson or class will be given to ‘no shows’ or “late cancellation”, and no extra time to extend their lesson will be given to students who are late to their lesson or class. If there is ever a time Rachel is running late, extra time will be given to make the lesson a full 60 minutes. If Rachel needs to reschedule, a Make-Up lesson will be scheduled as close to the same week as possible. Make-Up lessons are scheduled at Rachel’s discretion.
ONLINE LESSONS FOR IN-PERSON LESSON CLIENTS: In the event that the student is sick but still would like their lesson, an online lesson will be scheduled instead. Students can NOT come to their in person lesson sick, coughing, sneezing, with a runny nose, cold, flu, allergies, fever, etc. (This is to make sure no germs will be spread).
An online lesson will also be scheduled if there is bad weather, if a student is having car trouble, or any other reason for the student not being able to physically get to Rachel’s private studio during their normally scheduled lesson time. Online lessons are conducted through Classroom, FaceTime, Google, Hangouts, or Skype.
Lessons are weekly, on the same time/day of the week unless we have rescheduled or we have discussed in writing another lesson plan. If the student’s lesson falls on a holiday, we will either reschedule or if no other day is available, resume the following week.
If a student is going to be late they need to contact Rachel as soon as possible, to let her know they will be late. Lessons will end on time unless she is able to extend the lesson due to a late student or her schedule allows for it though please understand, Rachel would be extending a courtesy and would not be obligated to do so. If on the rare occasion Rachel is running late, she will always make up the time.
Parents/Guardians are ONLY permitted to stay for the first lesson and are NOT permitted to sit in for any other lesson/class unless invited. This is to promote good/strong teacher-student relationship quickly and easily. Also, many times students feel more comfortable when their parents/guardians leave. Of course there will be times when the parent will be invited back in at the end of some of the lesson to showcase progress.
COMMUNICATION: Due to Rachel's normally scheduling students one right after another without breaks, being in the recording studio, performing, or being on set, the best way to contact her is through text AND email. Please ALWAYS leave messages when calling Rachel with your name, contact info, AND the reason you are calling. Please be specific. Thank you!
"I try to be as fair as possible to both parties when it comes to cancellations, rescheduling, lateness, and make ups. Have a concern or question? Just talk with me. I'm all about communication!" - Rachel

5 years of music teaching experience from grades k-6 classrooms, collegiate, and private studio ranging all ages. I am a professional musician with a background in classical voice and piano and equally skilled in contemporary and musical theater styles. While I am an avid performer, I enjoy teaching music, specifically piano and voice.
I enjoy giving my students the freedom to explore different genres of music, where in other studios they may only be focused on classical or pop. In my studio, I like offering a multi-colored palette of musical genres because I have experience in a variety of genres.
My studio has encompassed ages five to adulthood. It is never to early to form an appreciation of music and never to late to get started on a hobby that can bring you much joy! As a teacher I also have experience in the performing arts and can help any student who go into a serious study of music.
I am an opera singer by trade and I also have experience performing in contemporary bands, musical theater, solo piano concerts, as well as classical voice concerts.
I hold a Bachelor degree in piano and voice, a Master's degree in Vocal Performance, and an Artist Diploma in Opera.
I enjoy teaching as much as I enjoy performing because it's a way to share what I have learned and plant a seed in students who may want to take music seriously or just as a hobby.
I teach in a variety of styles pop, musical theater, and classical and I'm always open to what you as a student want to get from your lessons and tutoring. I've had a private studio for the past 5 years and have experience teaching in a grade sch

Music is a way of living that enhances your creativity, gives a hopeful vision and makes the life sparkling. After my professional opera experiences for many years, frankly I can say that you can't loose the child of your inside that makes you different than the others. During my education process, I realized that the key of loving your work was also related to your instructors. Being a mentor, leading a way of something that will reflect someone's life is so precious and requires some responsibilities and solid background. When I was a student, I was always passionate about looking to work with the best teachers, I was extremely interested in learning something new. So I believe If you're a teacher, you should have strong skills, knowledge, willing, a good human being, kind attitude , patient and passion. It sounds cliche but people deserve it. So my goals in teaching, causing to be loved the music, raising people who feel full of elements of singing, explore the abilities of ...
About Aysen Idil
Shortly after my graduation from undergraduate studies, I started my professional career. I have been engaged with Turkish State Opera House as a permanent opera singer for seven years. In this role, I had the opportunity to perform leading roles with well-known orchestras, conductors and opera companies. It helped me to develop a professional attitude, discover leading research in opera at a younger age, develop good communication skills, musical discipline and responsibility at a young age. During this time, parallel to my professional duties, I assisted my voice teacher, who is a prima soloist in Turkish State Opera House, and had a chance to work with the students who provided me a chance to d
Teacher position requires ability to teach and communicate effectively, develop continuously and be responsible and disciplined with the tasks at hand. I believe my professional and academic experience have prepared me well in all of these areas.
While I was a young student, I always wanted to work with successful and well-equipped teachers who had significant and relevant hands-on experience. I believe, my experience and background prepared me to be one of those teachers who can help younger generation to build the skills necessary and grow in their area of study. This is what excites me the most about teaching.

My name is Jennah.
I would be so honored to be a part of your journey with music.
I like to make music fun, because it should be.
But I also want to help you feel comfortable and confident with your voice.
When I was 15,
I almost lost my voice and I lost my confidence. But every time I would listen to music I decided giving up wasn't an option.
I started working with my vocal chords and breathing techniques. I came up with a vocal strategy that brought back my voice and confidence. I would really love to share with you the warm ups and the methods that helped bring music back.
We will work on music theory, vocal warm ups, proper breathing techniques, and so much more.
I think teaching should be positive, reaffirming, and a happy experience.
I can't wait to work with you!
I have worked hard on vocal strategies for the past five years due to the fact I almost lost my voice. I had a vocal chord issue that took quite a few years to clear up. While it wasn't fun or enjoyable, I was able to learn alot about myself and my voice.
I had to teach myself how to sing again and it was a struggle.
No matter who you are or where you come from you can succeed.
I love working with kids, I have been teaching my neice to sing for three years and she has come such a long way for a 6 year old.
That is just one example. I like taking every student of mine and bringing out the best in their voices and in them.
That is what a teacher should do.
I can't wait to meet you!
