Introduction to cello and bow technique

About Rene
Knowing at the age of 5 that music was my life, by being brought up surrounded by praise music and gospel, my early exposure to music helped me to find every Instrument and style just my thing! I wanted to play everything and learn all aspects of music. I started with singing in the children's choir and then developed into piano and music theory. At the age of 12 I began to learn classical guitar, and at 15 took on various styles like Flamenco, Jazz and Rock. I graduated from High School having played in the school band achieving recognition In national Institutions Like IAJE (International Association for Jazz Education) and state band finals. I was also composing from a very early age, and at 18 released my first album (self-titled) which can still be heard and purchased today through various music outlets, since i have released over 15
albums with various ensembles and bands. In college I already knew from my previous experience that I wanted to teach and pass on the joy that music brought to my life. I studied Music Theory and Jazz and finished my degree in Music Education. I have been teaching all in all for about 14 yrs. And I have enjoyed every minute I have spent with my students learning as much from them, as them from me. I am looking forward to meeting new and eager students who really want to bring their inner music out to share with the rest of us music aficionados! and develop their skills to the peak of their abilities.

*** Lesson Details ***
My teaching method ranges depending on the student. I believe in my experience that everyone learns differently, therefore everyone develops at their own pace. I try to find key strengths in each student and expose this to their advantage, using their abilities to further develop their skills, this method has shown the most promising results and students usually find themselves playing and performing just a couple of months after their first lessons. Part of my method involves a lot of performance and recital opportunities to help break any fears and inhibitions a student may bring with them. Music is about sharing, so an early exposure to this method helps to strengthen and stabilize a core acceptance of a students style and path, giving them and those close to them a very clear picture of their development and achievements.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Has all instruments at both his home and college studio

*** Travel Equipment ***
I provide lesson material, song charts and a progression scale. I require student to have an Instrument and recommended technique literature.

*** Specialties ***
My classical training began in High School with Influences in Segovia, and Romero I studied classical for 4 yrs. and trained in Jazz and Improvisation with performances In Big Band and group ensemble. Also sang and played in the school gospel choir.

****Personal Statement*****

If you needed a reason

There is no question that music touches us instantly and activates images, emotions and memories that linger with us throughout our lives. As a casual listener or an obsessive music elitist, there are times in our lives when we get blown away by a sound so unique our entire body vibrates and resonates with the touch of something out of this world. I can honestly say when this happens to me I feel as close to a spiritual connection than anything I have experienced otherwise. I believe it is these exact events that have triggered my need to be completely involved in the making, performing and consuming of music. The creative process, to me, is the single obvious reason we exist in this world. We create and share, learn and interpret, build on previous ideas and inspire others to perfect upon this process. It is no doubt a very humbling experience to realize you are part of it all. During this process you come to realize how important you are as an Individual, how there is no other vessel like you in this world, nor has there ever been or ever will. You are here now and your voice, your talent, your gift is an instrument to the great choir of the human spirit. No one but you can relate this, a reason to be, to create, to give.

I prefer String Essentials as a teaching aid because it mixes a good amount of exercises with songs and also allows for duets. For the first few lessons I will tune the instrument and talk the student through the process. We always play a warm up scale and song, then we'll work on the decided piece. I love to leave time for the student to ask questions and present possible song interest! Suzuki Method is best for the student who will benefit from consist exercises, but should be used as a guide to full piece performance and structure.

About Janelle
Hello! My name is Janelle L. and I am a Manhattanville College graduate with a BFA in Musical Theatre and a BA in Psychology. As a performer I have appeared in the Off- Broadway productions ANTIGONE and TWELTH NIGHT with Love Creek Theater Company, SHOUT The Mod Musical and SHOWTUNE with direction by Mark Cherry, The Off-Broadway production oF THE EXTRAORDINARY FALL OF THE FOUR LEGGED WOMAN and a solo cabaret at The Metropolitan Room. I currently teach Voice, Piano, Violin, and Cello at The New Windsor School of Music and The Rock Underground of Greenwood Lake. I have learned some of my best lessons from being a performer and try to give my students more than technical knowledge; i.e. breathing from the diaphragm, not using tension to control breath, aiming over the soft pallet, etc., but also acting and performance knowledge; like learn
ing to work with your nerves before a number and thinking about why the character is singing instead of saying the lyrics. I have been teaching since I was 16; from students ranging from 5 years old to 47 and have learned to adapt my curriculum to each student while making sure they develop a good repertoire and technique. For educational purposes I follow exercises and drills from a range of books including Vocal Strength and Power by Dena Murray, Speak with Distinction by Edith Skinner, Acting Songs by David Brunetti, and Voice and The Alexander Technique by Jane Ruby Heirich. I can perform basic accompanying parts and can also transpose music.

a sample of how my voice lessons are run is below. Each student with leave with a basic knowledge of solfage, a musical scale, and multiple genres of songs.

I have been doing cello for close to eight years now. The books I will be using are the Suzuki books and a lot of assigned sheet music to keep it interesting and fun. I specialize in classical, but I can help with pop, jazz and a number of other things. Let me help you become the musician you always wanted to be!

About Leah
I am 16 years old and a member of the Missouri Philharmonic Orchestra, and the principle cellist in the Play and Sing His Praises Home School Orchestra.

I'm sister to 13 siblings both older and younger than me, so I have lots of practice with people of various ages and temperaments. I would like to go to Evangel University for a major in cello music, right after I graduate high school. I love teaching because my cello is my passion. (His name is Fitz.) I love seeing it become others passion also and helping place that zeal in them for their instrument.

I try to give a fair price for my relatively newly found love of teaching.

I've been playing my cello for nine years now. The director of the PSHP home school orchestra is my private cello lessons teacher, and I couldn't enjoy my lessons more!

I've been playing piano for just o
ne more year than my cello. Being taught the instruments has taught me how to teach others. I hope I can help you become the musician you always hoped you could!

Students can look forward to getting acquainted with the cello- from posture and properly handling the instrument, note-reading, and playing their first songs with the bow.

About Lisa C.
After playing the violin for over 20 years, Lisa was inspired to share the gift of music with others by her teacher, Susanna Sonnenberg. Lisa is a member of the American String Teacher’s Association, and has attended the 2017 and 2018 ASTA National Conferences. She currently performs with the Edgewood Symphony Orchestra and with outreach quartets. Lisa has played in recitals, the Chartiers Valley High School Orchestra, and was accepted to the 2006 PMEA District Orchestra. She has studied with Larry Weiss, Linda Andersen, and others. Lisa can’t remember a time before she learned how to play the violin; it has brought her great joy. Her favorite piece to play is the Bach Double Concerto in D Minor.

At 8 years old, Lisa fell in love with the violin. Throughout school, she studied with private teachers and played with the school orchestra.
At home, her dogs were a great audience.

Lisa went on to study history at the University of Pittsburgh, and later earned her law degree from Duquesne. She never forgot her violin, though, and continued to play in her spare time.

Music adds beauty to the world, and finally, after years of keeping the violin to herself, Lisa decided to share her playing with others. Lisa teaches traditional, classical method. The method books she uses include: Essential Elements for Strings, Samuel Applebaum, and All for Strings, among others. She supplements the technical exercises with repertoire from the Suzuki series. Lisa enjoys playing all types of music, in addition to classical, and teaches these songs, as well. Additional music includes pop artists like Taylor Swift, classic rock, electronic music like Lindsey Stirling, celtic, folk, and just about any other type of music you can think of. As a teacher, Lisa strives to be positive and encouraging. She believes that music should be fun, so her main goal is to make sure her students are having a good time!

I love playing and teaching the cello, and I'm so excited to share that with you. I make lessons fun and engaging, and you'll leave feeling positive and focused on progress. I believe that the technique should serve the music, so we'll always focus on creating art and telling a story. Cello playing mirrors life, so what we do in the practice room will have much larger applications than you might anticipate! From beginning students learning the basics to advanced players who need a push in the right direction, I aim to help you improve quickly and have a great time doing so.

About Claire
I'm a recent graduate of the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University, where I recently won the 2017 Cello Competition to perform the Saint-Saëns Cello Concerto No. 1 with orchestra. Previously, I attended Yale University where I earned my Bachelor's degree in psychology. I have spent most of my summers performing at the Aspen Music Festival and School in Colorado, and I have played in festivals from Indiana to Italy. My cello teachers have included Eric Kim (Jacobs), Richard Aaron (Juilliard), Alan Harris (Eastman School), Maria Kisoupolos (NY Philharmonic), Eric Bartlett (NY Philharmonic), and Wolfram Koessel (American String Quartet). I'm an active performer on the East Coast, collaborating with artists such as harpist Nancy Allen and flutist Carol Wincenc. I have taught almost as long as I have played, beginning with local communi
ty service and growing to teach as part of the Aspen Music Festival PALS program. I live and breathe the cello, and I can't wait to share my passion with you.

Experienced teacher of 3 years with a specialization in beginning/intermediate cello students. Lessons will cater to the needs of each individual student with a focus on a strong technical foundation. As a teacher, I concentrate on engaging students in their learning and aspire to inspire students to discover the joys and benefits of learning music. Not only will students learn to play the cello but they will have instruction in note reading, music theory and ear training. I believe that music should be enjoyable for students and strive to make meaningful connections with my students, positively influencing their musical lives.

About Naomi
I am a performer and teacher, specializing in cello and English as a Second Language. I graduated with a bachelor and master degree in music performance (cello) from Ball State University (Indiana). While a student, I had a multitude of teaching experiences ranging from music theory, music history, ear training, and English as a Second Language.

For the past three years, I have taught beginning/intermediate cello students. My teaching experiences began at a non-profit community music camp, Music for the Sake of Music, in Green Bay, Wisconsin. During this experience, I found a passion for teaching beginning students because of the fundamental need to provide a solid foundation. These early teaching experiences also inspired my teaching philosophy. Students can expect to focus on technique while simultaneously working on challenging and
exciting repertoire. Although there is an emphasis on strong fundamentals, I strive to demonstrate the fun and beneficial qualities of studying music. Music should not be a chore but rather a source of creativity and enjoyment.

I am open to teaching students of all ages and levels, although the majority of my experience is in beginning and intermediate levels. I've studied the cello for 14 years. I have experience in tutoring music theory, sight-ear (ear training), and music history. Also, I have been certified through the National College Learning Center Association, completing training that emphasizes engagement of students. Through this training I've learned how to help students learn independently and overcome challenges through trial and error. In music, these skills foster efficient practice techniques that often lead to a quickly developed technique.

During my studies, I was also a classroom instructor of ESL. I taught academic English to university students with various proficiency levels. In these classes, I taught between 2-15 students. This experince strengthened my classroom management but also taught me how to prepare lesson plans catering to individual students. I have received a graduate level certification in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages and in doing so I have studied materials development, classroom assessment/creating assessments, and methodologies for teaching English as a second language. Lastly, I have tutored individuals in ESL, working closely to improve listening, speaking, and vocabulary.

As a performer, I have played in many regional orchestras throughout Indiana such as the Lafayette Symphony Orchestra, Muncie Symphony Orchestra, and Kokomo Symphony Orchestra. I also have experience performing outside of a classical setting, especially in recording. In previous years I have recorded on pop albums for independent artists and composers. My most notable experience includes recording with Tony Award winning actress and singer, Sutton Foster on her newest album Take Me to the World.

Studying music is not about achieving perfection; it is about creativity and joy and obtaining skills that transfer to numerous fields. I look forward to meeting you and helping you develop a wide variety of skills that will enrich many parts of your life.

A storm had our session a bit laggy, but we overcame that obstacle. Naomi started simple and went over basic foundational aspects such as parts of the instrument, proper posture and body positioning, and tuning.

After that we moved on to intonation on the C major scale. A lot of musical theory was discussed throughout the lesson and she was very good at explaining the concepts. I already highly recommend her, and will continue lessons, so you should start.

As a student of mine you can expect to improve your playing skills week to week. I can teach from the very first lesson on. Students will learn techniques to improve their playing and will play fun music. If you are interested in learning improvisation, I can help with that, too. I enjoy teaching violin, viola and cello.
I am most passionate about teaching students to become independent, critical thinking musicians who will be able to rely on their own knowledge to learn new music as they go along. I stress music reading, ear training, and strong fundamentals in playing. I am very encouraging, love spreading my love of music.

About Melissa
I began playing violin in elementary school, and immediately knew this was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. My first words as a baby were lyrics because I sang before I spoke. I played violin until 11th grade when I fell in love with the sound of the viola.
I studied music performance and music education in college and I have a bachelors degree in both. I have played professionally in orchestras, quartets, as a soloist, and in many rock and folk settings. I have even put my violin and viola through a distortion pedal and a wah wah pedal in heavy metal/punk music. I have over 17 years of teaching experience and am a licensed teacher in the state of virginia. I have taught in a classroom as well as privately, and have also taught students with autism.

I've been working with Nazar since 1998. Not only does he know his stuff and makes his teaching personal to your needs, but he also has a way to make you feel successful even when you are struggling. you always feel better about your playing when you leave than when you got to his studio. He recognizes your learning style and what you want to accomplish, then builds his teaching around that.

If you are looking for a cello teacher (and yes, he also teaches piano and other instruments) I'd say put your time and money into Nazar and you, you will feel it is one of your best investments
