Having studied classical and opera singing at Westminster Choir College and having taught it for over a decade has prepared me to teach beginner and intermediate opera voice students. Students will learn technique, the fundamentals of voice health, performance and auditions skills, and extensive study of literature.
I coach French, German and Spanish diction, along with English. I specialize in overcoming mental or emotional blocks that keep us from singing our best.

More important than my conservatory education and my experience as an educator and a performer is my passion for teaching music and acting and my undying belief that anyone can learn to be a musician and an actor. I'm currently available to teach lessons in my own St. Augustine home studio and online around the globe.

I'm a cum laude graduate of Westminster Choir College in Princeton, New Jersey and a winner of its merit scholarship. I studied classical music there, grateful to have been taught by the likes of tenor Thomas Faracco and renowned voice scientist and pedagogue, Dr. Scott McCoy.

After performing with the New York and Royal Philharmonics, the New Jersey and Virginia Symphonies, the American Boy Choir and the internationally renowned opera star, Andrea Bocelli, studying opera and piano at Westminster Choir College and pe
rformance art and improvisational acting at East Carolina University in North Carolina, and appearing in shows and pageants across the east coast, I found my life's work in 2003 when I began teaching music.

I've taught hundreds of different students since 2003 with great success, from 5-year-olds with special needs to middle-aged professional opera singers, from a professor in Saudi Arabia to a 65-year-old doctor of music, from kids of Radio Disney to students of the famed Actors Studio in New York, from busy stay-at-home parents to retirees with bucket lists, from CEOs to touring singer-songwriters.

I've created and led a workshop about singing called, "The Whole Body Singer". I've written dozens of articles about music and music education for the blog at TakeLessons.com.

My extensive knowledge of the voice has encouraged and empowered hundreds of singers and prepared many of them to win competitions, pageants and auditions, as well as roles in operas and musicals, including lead roles in Limelight Theater and Curtis Camp productions. . When a student comes to me in need of voice coaching, my job is to get to the root of mental blocks, to reveal why and how she's not singing at her optimum.

Both teaching myself piano and receiving formal training at a conservatory has prepared me to teach almost anyone how to play.

The intensive training and education that I received at Westminster Choir College in songwriting, music theory and sight reading has benefited my students at every level.

My current work as singer and keyboardist in the acoustic rock duo, Timberwood, has strengthened my knowledge of a broad range of styles and genres. As a lifelong learner, I have a strong commitment to continuing my education. That's why I studied songwriting online with the Berklee College of Music in Boston in 2014.

In the lessons that I teach, I'm flexible, positive and encouraging. While I want my students to have fun and love music, not dread it, I expect hard work and persistence. I am caring, patient, nurturing, and compassionate. In piano lessons, I usually allow the student to choose a piece with which to warm up and then move on to technique and repertoire. In voice lessons, I usually warm up the singer and discuss technique and sight singing before focusing on song choices. Joan Frey Boytim wrote a book for voice that I like to use, and I like the Estelle Liebling exercises for the more advanced singer. Hanon exercises are a big part of my piano curriculum, and I enjoy the Bastien and Alfred books for young and old. I have used completely random songs pulled out of a piano bench and a karaoke CD for kids. I will use almost anything I can get my hands on if it means effectively teaching music.

Acting lessons consist of exercises and games that apply learned concepts, with an emphasis on stage acting and Meisner technique, as well as monologue and audition coaching.

Parents, siblings and spouses are always welcome to observe lessons quietly.

I have been teaching this subject for over 16 years. There is no specific curriculum as each student will come to lessons with their own unique skills, needs, and goals. Lessons are tailored to those specifics. Opera voice is for experienced singers. The ability to reading music is mandatory as is access to a piano or keyboard for practicing. Concerning repertoire, it will be selected based on the student's learning needs but also with their input. The main emphasis on performance lessons, however, will be technique and reading. About Troy
Composer Troy W. graduated from the New England Conservatory, earning his Bachelors, Masters (cum laude) and Graduate Diploma while studying with mentor Malcolm Peyton. After spending a year studying with Lukas Foss in Boston, Mr. W. moved to Houston in 2001 where he continued graduate studies at Rice University's Shepherd School of Music.

During his time as a teacher with the Michael P. Hammond Preparatory Program at Rice University's Shepherd School of Music, Troy taught classes in music fundamentals and music theory for pre-college students. He has also served on the faculty of the Summer Institute for Piano teaching courses in Form & Analysis for pre-college students.

Troy also has maintained a private studio, tutoring and teaching private lessons in composition, ear training, voice, piano, literature, and history for over ten
years. Students who have studied with him come from a wide range of backgrounds with different goals. Those who have continued with musical studies in college have consistently placed out of at least the first two semesters of music theory and achieved advanced placement in their chosen fields of study. Those who chose a different path continue to benefit from the education and training they received from taking music lessons.

*** Lesson Details ***
There is no "standard formula" to lessons. Each student has their own unique background, needs, and goals. Lessons tend to be somewhat casual but are structured in such a way as to meet the unique requirements of the student.

To accomplish your goals, there are a few requirements and basic expectations that the student and parent must meet.
The first is practice. Students are expected to practice daily for at least the length of their lesson time. This, above all else, is essential to progress. It is also expected that a parent will attend lessons for students who are too young to drive themselves here. It's important for a parent to guide the student's practice time (particularly for younger students) to ensure that the most is gained from it. This is why I ask that a parent observe lessons.
Each student or parent should bring to each lesson a notebook, pencils (with erasers). The notebook will be used to record notes about each lesson, homework, practice advice, etc. Pencils (not pens...nobody's perfect!) are used by composers to record their creations and performers to mark their music. Both of these essential practices are subject to changing thought and must be open to change. So no ink, please!

Performers: It is not necessary to know how to read music at the first lesson for beginners. However, learning to read is required for subsequent lessons and will be a large focus for all non-readers. Lessons are not learned "by ear." A certain amount of theory will be a part of every lesson just as technique and repertoire. Concerning repertoire, it will be selected based on the student's learning needs but also with their input. The main emphasis on performance lessons, however, will be technique and reading. Students should come to the first lesson prepared to discuss their background & goals and the plan of their course of study.
Note: Voice students must be at least 16 years of age.

Composers: Just as with performers, it is not necessary to know how to read music at the first lesson. However, learning to read is required for subsequent lessons. Many young composers have great ideas but can only hear them in their heads or play them on an instrument. Lessons will allow you to obtain the skills to write them down with greater speed, accuracy, and clarity. More advance students will also include exploring a wider range of harmonic languages, advanced notation, instrumentation, orchestration, and aural skills. Students should come to the first lesson with examples of their work, either written, notated, or recorded in a digital format. They should be prepared to discuss their background & goals and the plan of their course of study.

IMPORTANT NOTES:
• To reschedule a lesson, more than one day notice is required.

• Make up lessons must be scheduled before the next regular lesson.

• A make up lesson cannot be scheduled in place of a regular lesson.

• If, for any reason, two 30-minute lessons are scheduled one right after the other, they will be charged as two 30-minute lessons, not one 60 minute lesson which is a different rate.

• If, for any reason, two 45-minute lessons are scheduled one right after the other, they will be charged as two 45-minute lessons, not one 90 minute lesson which is a different rate.

So far, I look forward to each lesson! Troy is very kind, yet very helpful and has helped me target on my personal goals with opera while also learning more each time! I highly recommend him. It doesn't matter if you have no experience in voice or only experience in voice ( as my experience is theatre and musical theatre), he is patient in helping you achieve the goals set. I cannot wait to continue lessons with him!

Adriel is a Baritone in GSU’s premier ensemble Southern Chorale, and is part of Georgia Southern Opera, some of his previous roles include: Sir Thomas Bertram in Mansfield Park, Sir Francis Nurse in The Crucible, and Leporello in Don Giovanni. He is currently preparing the role of Rigoletto in GSU’s production of Talk Opera, and the role of Angry Man in Steven Chatman’s Choir Practice. Adriel has also done musical theater for 4 years and participated in the Shuler Hensley Musical Theater Awards. He just placed as a Semifinalist in NATS National Classical Singing Competition in Las Vegas, Nevada, and won First Place in the PRSSA Competition! by the Georgia Southern faculty in 2018.

I was guest soprano with the Rackham Symphony Orchestra and Friends of the Opera in Dearborn, the Menc conference, and the Kerrytown Concert House in Ann Arbor. I was also artistic director of the Arts Center Music School in Detroit where I taught all levels of voice and fundamental piano. One of my voice students is enrolled in a major music school in New York, another is a songwriter and recording artist in Detroit, and another recently auditioned and was accepted into the Mosaic Youth Theater in Detroit.

In addition to guest solo appearances, I currently have two works in progress, including, a monolog with my original composition, and a demo for a new CD featuring my original compositions.

I am a Vocal Music Education major in his Senior year at Wayne State University. I am a tenor and hold two positions singing gospel professionally, one as Tenor Section Leader of Fort Street Presbytarian, and another as a Tenor at the Grosse Pointe Memorial Church. I am also the Vice President and Section Leader for the WSU Concert Chorale, an audition level choir. I have 15 years experience singing and have studied under several very experienced teachers, the current of which is Dr. Troiano. My studio revolves around a solid technique that comes with ear training, breathing, phonation, and clarity of sound. The style I teach hinges on this foundation, and thus is greatly applicable to any style of singing.

Greetings!

I am a current WSU student of Vocal Music Education with my principle instrument as voice (Tenor). I'm 25 years old, and a well rounded musician with a great sense of humor and a laid back attitude. This isn't to say that my lessons are all fun and games; there is a serious element to every session, but students have always give positive feedback in that they feel very comfortable with me.

I have been singing for 15 years and do so professionally in two churches, one of which I am the section leader of (Fort Street Presbyterian in Detroit). I am also the section leader of the WSU Concert Chorale, the audition level choir. For both voice and guitar, I have studied under numerous great men and women who have guided my practices to the point where I have began to pass my knowledge to others!

Dane is an excellent teacher to work with. You can get a lot accomplished with him any time you work with him. He'll make you feel super comfortable in your own abilities no matter what level you are, while also working with you towards realistic goals. He explains things very well and with patience. He'll treat you way more on a personal one on one level than anybody I've tried to work with thus far. Extremely understanding, and great teacher. 11/10.
