I've been teaching cello for 30 years and my students have gone on to play with different ensembles like symphony orchestras. Within the first few lessons, you'll be able to play simple songs by reading and by ear and as time goes on you'll be able to play more complex repertoire. I specialize in classical, style but I can teach you different kinds of styles, typically use Kummer method and Suzuki repertoire but I use a variety of method and books. I have the following tools available for your lessons: cello, computer program, sound system, Tuner and Metronome . I've taught beginning through advanced cello lessons to my students in elementary, middle and high school in orchestra classes as well as privately. My cello students have received numerous scholarships to various colleges, universities and conservatories and music camps. Cello is a wonderfully robust and special instrument that has such a broad range that it needs to encompass 3 different clefs. The cello can produce beautiful tenor or bass like sounds as well as higher pitched melodies that almost sound like one is playing the violin or viola! I love teaching the cello and have taught students at all levels and ages. I've taken private cello lessons in the past with really great cello teachers and performers, so I have learned so many different teaching techniques and approaches to the cello that help to make each student's progress more rapid, consistent and comfortable.

About Ralph

I've spent most of my adult life teaching string instruments at all levels in the Northern Virginia public schools both as an orchestra director and as a private teacher. I have a music contracting business called Symphony To Go. If you would like to see my teaching studio, please consider visiting

Mr. Ralph Boehm is a great teacher. He is firm in
his teaching, yet very kind and generous. He has spectacular humanity. As far as technique, he finds out where his student is weak , and tries hard to turn the weakness into a strength and will work extra time to correct the flaws of his student. He is a rare individual
and instructor. I consider myself very lucky to have him
as my violin teacher.

Ralph is a wonderful cello instructor. Kind, caring, thoughtful and very knowledgeable. His directions really helped my daughter’s technique and sound quality. He teaches violin, viola and bass as well. Highly recommend!
Lori
My daughter has been taking lessons with Mr. Ralph Boehm for seven months. She loves her weekly lessons due to Mr. Boehm’s professionalism, passion for teaching and passion for music. He ensures his students have the basics down to the muscles in their hands before they progress. I highly recommend him for students who are eager to excel at their instrument.

I have been doing cello for close to 10 years now, and as of 3 years ago, I discovered that I love teaching! It's become a favorite way of mine to inspire other's to be the best musician they can be! The cello isn't a particularly easy instrument to learn, but I will say that it is SO worth it. It takes work, but what doesn't? I would encourage everyone to play an instrument! It just so happens that I can only help with a few of those. ;)

"I am 43 years old and was scared to take on such a difficult instrument but I really wanted to learn how to play the beautiful cello. I had my first lesson and am very happy with Claire. She is friendly, accommodating, patient, and explains her lesson in a clear and easy manner (as easy as you can get with the cello). I had a lot of questions and she was very open in answering all of them. Although I am still at the very very beginnings of my journey, I am very excited to continue with the cello lessons, thanks to Claire."

Is Cello Hard to Learn? Read THIS Before Taking Lessons

Many beginning musicians wonder, “Is cello hard to learn?” The process of learning the cello is not difficult, but it’s important to keep in mind that the cello is not an instrument of instant gratification. It does require focused, daily practice time and a good teacher to guide you along the way. How far you progress with cello is a direct result of the amount of quality time you put into practicing the instrument. Even someone who puts in just 30 minutes a day will notice a signi …
