As a bass opera singer and professional voice over artist, I am dedicated to creating a healthy and beautiful sound with my own voice and the voices of my students. I will not come into our lessons saying there is a single way to sing. In fact, many genres require a great deal of varying vocal techniques and stylized voices. What I will do is help to lay a foundation in healthy singing so that you feel comfortable singing any genre. We will start by ensuring that your breath and vowel placement feels comfortable and from there move into repertoire of your choosing or some that I recommend based upon your interests. You will leave your tenure with me empowered to continue your passion and career for singing long after your lessons end. Music is meant to be shared. Together, we will help you to share the music and passion that you hold so dear.

I can’t say enough great things about Matthew! He has been an amazing teacher - his technical expertise, his tremendous patience, and his ability to explain in simple terms and help me understand proper vocal technique has been instrumental in my development. I’m grateful to have found Matthew - he has shown a level of support and commitment to my goals that I haven’t seen in other teachers and I am excited to continue working with him, as I know that with his guidance I’ll achieve them.

I am a classically trained singer and choral conductor based in Athens, GA. I am open to teaching all styles to all ages and experience levels. My focus as a teacher is on finding a student's "core" sound, helping to assess a student's vocal aspirations through the lens of a healthy, sustainable singing technique. Much of the work we will do in lessons is on finding and maintaining your true voice - the sound you create when at your most grounded and relaxed, cultivated through vocal exercises, practice of body and mind awareness, and explored through repertoire of the student's and my own choosing.

About Sean

I am a singer, conductor, and church music director based in Athens, GA where I am currently pursuing my Master of Music in Choral Conducting at the University of Georgia. Previously, I completed my Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance at the College of Saint Rose in Albany, NY, where I was also

Sean used to teach me keyboard and music theory and I’ve become not only a better musician, but a more well versed musician because of him. He has a very unique perspective and manages to bridge and connect concepts in such a way that really shows how all aspects of music are interconnected in ways you might not expect. Not only this, he showed me how these things connect from a musicians perspective, but also from a listeners perspective as well. Things like how parts work together and how changes in voice leading can drastically improve or diminish a performance. Super intricate stuff that I was able to understand in minutes thanks to his teaching style and personality. Great guy, even greater teacher. Would be the first recommendation I give to anyone I know.
Jessica
I had the privilege of learning from Sean as a student in his choir. As a conductor, Sean is clear and concise in his expectations of students, and is very effective in communicating not only constructive feedback, but specific strategies to address that feedback. As a student, I appreciated how for any issue, Sean had multiple techniques ready to go. If one technique or suggestion was not connecting, he was always able to shift and have other pedagogical recommendations to tackle the problem. Sean’s strength as an educator lies in his ability to balance vocal technique and production with an emphasis on the artistry of singing and performance. I would highly recommend Sean Butler as a teacher for any person looking to grow as a vocalist.
Lauren
Sean’s musicianship is astounding, and that directly correlates to his teaching; though he can hear a wrong note instantly, his feedback is always supportive, allowing you to work and grow in a welcoming (yet (reasonably) challenging) forum. His range extends well beyond the stereotypical confines of classical music, making him an ideal teacher for anyone, of any age, interested in any style. Additionally, his accepting nature is ideal for those seeking a no-judgment learning space. Was truly impressed by my time with Sean, and would recommend him tenfold!

"I had a great experience! Phillip was extremely patient and engaging during lessons and very often went above and beyond to provide me with music and vocal exercises.
He has a vast knowledge of music; I learned so much about voice, more than I realized there is to know about singing.
Phillip has an energetic, but easy going, personality and great sense of humor. This was my first time singing in front of someone and I appreciated his kindness and encouragement.
I highly recommend him!!!"

"Erik is a fantastic voice teacher and is a wonderful person. I cannot recommend him highly enough. I have recently started voice lessons with Erik after a 10+ year break from singing opera and choral music, and I have learned so much from him already in the two moths we have been working together - posture, breathing techniques, analysis of the text and score, ....
Our lessons are well organized, very helpful, and a lot of fun. I look forward to my weekly lessons with Erik and hope to study with him for a long time."

"I have been studying virtually with Timothy since June and am more than pleased with my progress. I had never taken classical voice lessons before but have noticed tremendous growth in my breath support, vocal resonance, and ability to make my diaphragm work harder than my throat. He's patient, fun to work with, gives great direction and homework exercises, and pushes you as far you're willing to work. All of this and he's very pleasant and friendly which is the cherry on top. Highly recommend!"

8 Beautiful Opera Arias for Beginner Singers

It is always exciting when a vocal student is ready to start studying his or her first operatic aria! One of the best things about being a classical singer is knowing you have so many great years ahead of you. After all, you’re considered in your prime in your 40s. That being said, realize that the voice you have now and the repertoire you’ll first study will be very, very different from what you sing later on in your career. It’s absolutely crucial that you sing repertoire that is …
