About Mayumi
American jazz saxophonist and composer Charlie Parker said, Music is your own experience, your thoughts, your wisdom. If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn. This sentiment shaped my views on music and its performance. One of my great pleasures in life is sharing an appreciation of music.

I had always been a part of music. My father played trumpet, my mother could play guitar and carry a tune. They believed music was an important part of life so they started me on piano at 5 years old. And I've been playing that ever since. I started learning to sing in my middle school chorus when I was 11 years old. I really liked it and I liked it more when I would sing my mother and father's favorite songs and see them smile. So I listened to a lot of singers and vocalists that they liked and learned by emulating them and apply
ing what I was learning in chorus. My piano lessons helped grasp the theory behind music and gave me a good ear for pitches.

I studied voice at the University of Maryland College Park School of Music. In their chorus I had the pleasure of learning and performing many wonderful pieces such as Verdi's Requiem and St. Matthew's Passion. During that time I had chance of playing with the University Jazz Band as both their pianist and as their jazz singer. I even arranged my own version of Too Darn Hot by Cole Porter that was performed by the band in 2007.

I also work a lot with musical theatre. I've been in a number of shows in Maryland including Rent and Hairspray, and Into the Woods. I also free lance as a music director in the area. I've been a music director for 10 years and I love every minute of it. My music director credits include Children of Eden, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Annie, Grease, My Fair Lady, A Chorus Line, 42nd Street, And the World Goes Round, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat, Wizard of Oz, Jekyll & Hyde for which I was nominated for Outstanding Musical Direction in 2011 and Ragtime for which I was named one of the "Best of 2013: Favorite Musical Direction" by DC Metro Arts and won WATCH Award for Outstanding Musical Direction.

I believe that to get as good as you want to be, of course you have to work at it, but there's no reason that you can't enjoy learning it.
Thanks for stopping by and I hope to be able to teach you soon.
Mayumi G.

Practice makes perfunk. This is a saying that was always hanging on my band teacher's door in high school. It was a reminder that it requires work to get something right, but you need to take breaks and relax a bit too. That's how I feel about teaching in general. Constantly working and being worried about getting it just right can lead to bad habits. So I make sure that the lesson is balanced between a relaxed atmosphere and an effective working environment.

I can teach a variety of styles. But I like to always make sure that the fundamentals of singing are solid regardless of whether you want to sing classical or jazz or pop. So I go into:
Proper techniques for breathing
Creating good tonal sounds
Diction
learning to sing like a musician-it is easy to forget that the vocal cords are another style of instrument

I believe that singers have a greater advantage if they are able to read music and understand theory. I believe that it makes learning music by oneself much easier as well. So I also have the option to go into basic music theory (i.e. reading music notation and rhythms) to advance music theory(i.e. roman numeral analysis, ear training, harmonic progression) if you choose to do so.

For intro to piano, I follow the same structure as beginning singers and also start with the fundamental basics that will help lead into whatever style you wish to play:
How to read music
Understanding basic music theory
how to play what you read
Finger strengthening

For both piano and singing: After some basic training, I start to give a variety of different style songs to work with. I do encourage student to bring songs they want to learn and tailor lessons around that particular song and style. I like them to learn 2 songs per lesson increasing to 3 or 4 depending on the pace of the student and the amount of workload they feel they are able to handle.

I do believe that listening to music is part of the learning process so every few weeks or so I like to give the student 1 or 2 YouTube clips I found and have them watch it then come in the next week and we discuss the video both good and bad and what they can learn from it.

As they progress the songs get more difficult and we start really honing in on the techniques of the production of sound as well as performance aesthetics, as in how to create a presence on stage, how to project the sound more, overall how to give a good performance.

Some of my past students would use the lesson time to learn about auditioning for musicals and stage productions. If the student has any such desire all they have to do is ask and I will set aside time to work on how to audition for shows and what most music directors look for when they hear you sing. For those who don'€™t, I like to give the option to give a recital if the student feels comfortable to do so. It would be held in a local studio, very casual affair just to give the student that experience of music as a performing art.

Note: I do teach at my home. I do have pets, a dog and a cat. If this is an issue, I can also travel to the student home.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Music room with keyboard and office equipment. Seating for parents.

**She has a cat, and a mid size dog**

*** Travel Equipment ***
Teaching piano: I own a weighted keyboard suitable for instruction.
Teaching voice: I can accompany the student as they sing

*** Specialties ***
In piano I tend to teach classical, but I do move away from that after they've grasped the basic technique and theory to how to sight read and improvise, even play by ear.

In voice, I start with basic classical technique and after they've grasped the fundamentals of good vocal production, branch out into different styles of music from straight classical/opera to Broadway to jazz to pop and r&b.

Never before have I had a music teacher who was so adaptive in his/her teaching method. I have had previous music instruction, but had some theory gaps in that needed to be filled. Mayumi assessed my knowledge level and got me right into what I needed to learn. She is also an expert at bringing more commonly known terms and musical pieces in which to tie the lesson to real world musical situations that her student might be more familiar with. Very much looking forward to future lessons with her!!! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED INSTRUCTOR ^_^

I LOVE teaching Broadway songs ! They are always fun to sing at every level. It's best for beginners to start with a song that is not too difficult at first so your voice won't be strained in any way. It's good to find songs that are a bit more challenging for intermediates and then advanced students are ready for sustaining long tones in the higher registers, as well as phrasing long passages. As your teacher, it's my job to find material that is best suited for your vocal range and your development. We will always discuss your songs together and find songs you want to learn and those you will love to perform!!

About Dr. Jeanne
*Hi and welcome!!

My students like to call me Dr. Jeanne, so feel free to do the same! I have been in music all my life and I love helping my students no matter what level they may be.from beginning to advanced. My experience in music started on stage at age three and by the time I was 21 I was singing and dancing on national television in many variety tv shows after having won the tittle of Miss Memphis. I studied music at Stephens College in Columbia, MO and the University of California in music andI have since taught hundreds of voice and piano students everything I know about music and performance. Piano is a joy to teach, but my greatest love is teaching voice .I specialize in all styles of music as long as I feel it is musical, developmental and expressive.. Music takes time and discipline to master and I'm looking forward t
o meeting you and hearing all about your goals and dreams in music and how I can help you along your path.

I believe everyone has the ability to sing … some better than others, of course, -- but regardless, I believe every voice can make a beautiful sound. I believe learning to sing requires team work: with the proper instruction and learning tools from me, the instructor, and with the dedication (practice, practice, practice) from you, the student, a well-rounded singer can emerge. If you can hear the proper note, I can help your vocal instrument play to its fullest abilities.

I began singing when I was five years old in church. I continued singing exclusively inspirational music until I was a teenager. At that time, in addition to the second soprano part I sang in a five-part harmony a Capella (without instrumental accompaniment) Gospel group, I also sang in a few bands (Rhythm and Blues, Jazz, and Rock). My undergraduate studies we
re completed at the American University, where I majored in Communications (B.A.), and minored in Music, voice being my instrument. During my undergraduate studies, I was recruited and performed as the lead female vocalist for a Rock band that a few fellow music students had formed. While in college, I was trained in classical voice, piano, music theory, musical theater performance, and vocal pedagogy (vocal training). My vocal pedagogy studies credentialed me to become a professional vocal instructor. I began teaching voice after I earned my degree, and have been teaching private voice lessons for over ten years.

Most of my present expertise in teaching voice grew from my vocal pedagogy studies, my teaching experience which has developed over time, my own personal vocal dedication, and my training and understanding of various genres of vocal performance. My present singing career is as an inspirational singer; my vocal students encompass various genres in which I have experience, including: Inspirational, Rhythm and Blues, Jazz, Rock, Classical, as well as various degrees of popular music.

*** Audition Preparation ***
I have coached many of my students to prepare for auditions: auditions to be accepted into performing arts schools, parts in musicals and plays, joining a band or vocal ensemble, as well as auditions for televised singing shows, such as "The Voice," "Sunday's Best," "American Idol" and "The X Factor."

*** Lesson Details ***
I teach students by using the tried and true techniques I have found to be successful, and allow the student to be my guide as to which direction to take with his or her vocal training. Whether the student is a novice, a professional, or somewhere in between, each student, after obtaining the basic singing knowledge and techniques, will have a vocal training schedule geared to his or her individual needs and development. Lessons are for the most part very casual in nature, and the student’s dedication (practice, practice, practice) will dictate whether or not the lessons become stricter. A few months into the vocal instruction, students will be given the opportunity to learn more about reading music and sight singing, if he or she so chooses, as well as vocal performance techniques for singing in front of an audience. Within one year, dedicated students may also have the opportunity to show off what they have learned, and perform in front of an audience at a recital with other vocal students. Please note that my preference is to work with teens age 13 through adults of any age. I believe that younger voices need more time to develop and stand to be damaged if too much stress is put on them too soon. However, exceptions for children under 13 may be made for gifted young singers.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Home studio- entry room of home, baby grand piano, seating area, dry erase board, mirrors
Music Studio- one recording studio, seating area, classroom

*** Travel Equipment ***
If needed, I provide a portable piano keyboard, microphone with amplifier, paper handouts of lessons, etc. The student needs to have paper to take notes and a writing instrument.

*** Specialties ***
Most of my voice lesson experience has been with adults, and contemporary popular and inspirational music.

I teach legit musical theatre, with an emphasis on classical technique. I do teach how to belt, but I believe in using it sparingly.

About Belinda
*** Lesson Details ***
NOTE: I prefer to teach students ages 11 & up.  I will accommodate younger students, but as vocal development is a direct reflection of physical development (the instrument is the body), we will be unable to delve deeply into technique.  Instead, the curriculum for younger students will include musicianship and piano skills; they will be more of music lessons that incorporate singing rather than "vocal" lessons.  My current studio consists of all sorts of singers including classical, musical theater, R&B, and pop.  In classical voice lessons, we will be learning songs not only in English, but also Italian, German, and French. Classical voice lessons may not be for everyone, however, and we will learn repertoire that suits the interests of each student.

I emphasize a basic knowledge of music theory, because it
's important for a singer to not only know how to sing, but to also understand the music he or she is singing. I will incorporate music theory into the lessons, starting with basics such as learning how to read notes.

I believe in making sure the singer is comfortable and confident.  The environment you will be learning in is open and non-threatening because a singer needs a place to explore his or her voice.  I encourage my students to make mistakes and to keep the lines of communication as open as possible.  Singers are perfectionists, and we're constantly telling ourselves what we do wrong- we don't need someone else enforcing that negativity.

I concentrate on a classical vocal technique, with proper posture, efficient breathing, lack of facial and body tension, and healthy vocal production. I believe that it is important to have a strong foundation of healthy technique no matter what style of singing. My teaching style and lesson focus will be different for each individual person, and I'm very flexible in adapting to each singer's needs and personality.

I am a very understanding teacher, and very patient, but I will push you to work to your potential! What you put into these lessons and your practicing is what you will get out of it. I am not strict, but I do expect dedication, passion, and respect. I am a very enthusiastic and energetic teacher, and lessons with me will be fun, productive, and encouraging.

If I sound like the right teacher for you, please arrange a trial lesson to see how well we work together!

I have been working with Belinda for a little over 2 years. Every lesson, she challenges me to be better than before. What I love most about her style, is she customizes her style of teaching for the student. I am a very imagery oriented person, and she always helps me to visualize things in ways that makes sense to me. My singing has dramatically improved during my time with Belinda, and I would recommend her to anyone in a heart beat. I generally focus voice lessons around classical vocal technique, which will develop good habits regarding... breathing... posture... body/facial tension...and overall good vocal health. I am a firm believer in the idea that classical vocal techniques are carried over into any genre. In addition to classical repertoire I have experience working with musical theater, pop, jazz, soul, and country.

About Chelsea
Lesson Details:
As a teacher, I've had experience teaching both young children and adults in many settings, whether it be in a classroom, small group lesson, or one-on one. I pride myself on providing lessons that are uniquely individual and foster a students strengths while also building on their weaknesses. The best part about being a music educator is that I get to share my love of music with all of my students. With that said, whether you are a beginner who's interest has been sparked, or you have aspirations of becoming a professional musician I can help you there!

Lessons are catered to each individual student and are conducted in a supportive environment where students are encouraged to take risks, try new things, make mistakes, and most importantly be themselves.

I value the time I have with my students and expect each st
udent to come prepared to each lesson with an open mind and willingness to work. With music, the best results only come to those who put in 100% both during lessons and during individual practice time. This is key in any musical pursuit. Overall, I want lessons to be enjoyable while still maintaining a sense of progress for the student.

Chelsea has been teaching my 14 year old grandson now for over 2 years. She is actually "gets him" where many teachers don't and she manages to bring the absolutely best out in him. She clearly loves her work and it shows so much so that after many years of playing the piano, more off than on recently, I decided to take lessons with her too. I could not be more pleased with the outcome.

Love music but too afraid to admit it? Always wanted to learn how to sing but never knew who to ask? I'm Zoe, I'm a voice and beginner music skills teacher and I would love to help! I have experience singing and teaching all types of music that includes gospel singing, opera, musical theater, pop music, acapella, jazz, R&B, country, choral and everything in between! I believe that voice lessons should be fun, informative, freeing and productive. I have been teaching for over 4 years and have loved every student I've had. All ages and skill levels welcome! I also teach beginner music skills such as learning to read music, understanding rhythm, music theory, sight singing, aural theory, beginner piano and solfedge. I love everything from Mozart to Adele! If you do too, shoot me a message and let's get started!

About Zoe
Hey you! I'm Zoe from Alexandria,VA. I studied vocal performance at James Madison University as a music major and loved every second of it. While at JMU, I started teaching voice to high school and other college students. I have experience working with students for theater audition preparation, choral ensemble audition preparation, learning to read music, improving ear training skills, beginner piano and healthy vocal technique for all genres of music.

I majored in classical voice and have performed in over a dozen opera productions in the United States and abroad. Most recently, I traveled to Sulmona, Italy to perform the lead role in Giacomo Puccini's beloved opera "Suor Angelica". Other favorite opera roles include Fiordiligi, Berta and The Mother from Amahl and the Night Visitors. During my time at JMU I also performed and music di
rected many musical theater productions including 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee(Rona Lisa Peretti), Avenue Q (Music Director and Conductor) and Dogfight (Assistant Music Director and Vocal Coach).

I have over 8 years of experience in the choral music canon. While at JMU I participated in the Advanced Women's Chorus and was the soprano section leader and undergraduate leader of the James Madison Singers. I also have experience as Music Director and Choral Leader of the St Stephens UCC.

During my time at JMU I was the Music Director and arranger fir the premiere all-female acapella group Note-Oriety. My arrangement of JMU Note-Oriety's cover of Jessie J, Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj's"Bang Bang" was the winner of the Song of the Year at the 2016 CARA Awards in Boston, MA and I was blessed to be runner up in the country for Arranger of the Year. Additionally, my arrangement of JMU Note-Oriety's music video and cover of Beyonce's "Pretty Hurts" has amassed over half a million views on YouTube , was featured on USAToday, Buzfeed, FOX5 News and TEDTalk Charlotesville where I was a performer and speaker.

I also love and have experience singing and teaching other genres of music such as traditional and contemporary gospel music, pop music(I'm a huge pop culture junkie), jazz music, country music, R&B and neo soul music. My philosophy of teaching voice is that healthy classical voice technique can be adapted to all genres of music, always emphasizing safe voice practices. I'm very excited to start working with you and bring my blended musical experiences to you!

I began singing Aretha Franklin and Gladys Knight at a very young age, but eventually fell in love with classical singing, as well. I teach many genres, with an equal love for all of them, but with a healthy technique so your singing is supported, comfortable, and therefore more enjoyable to both the listener and the performer. I will tailor the lessons to your individual desires, but generally focus on breath support, placement, and style/interpretation.I also enjoy helping students find their range. I believe music lessons should be a fun place to explore and try new things!

About Amanda
Originally from suburban Ohio, mezzo-soprano Amanda began her vocal pursuits singing the likes of Aretha Franklin and Gladys Knight. As a teenager, a voice teacher introduced her to classical repertoire, and she has since enjoyed a fruitful operatic education and career.

Amanda received her Bachelors of Music Degree in Vocal Performance from Chapman University in Orange, California in 2011. There, she was the recipient of a scholarship, and graduated Magna cum laude. She enjoyed educational and performance experiences in Europe, studying abroad in London and performing throughout Italy with the Chapman University Choir.

Amanda went on to receive her Master's Degree from the Maryland Opera Studio at the University of Maryland. She has since gone on to apprenticeships and residencies with Dayton Opera, Charlottesville Opera, Pensacola
Opera, and has sung roles throughout the US and Canada.

Amanda also has a background in piano, and currently studies under Dr. Stanley Cornett at Peabody Conservatory.

Amanda believes in early exposure to music of different styles, and endorses an encouraging and imaginative approach. She considers musical studies to be not only individually rewarding, but also inherently valuable to any educational model.

I've loved Broadway since I was a child and love singing musical theatre! I'm also very into singing with proper technique which can frequently get overlooked when it comes to singing show tunes. The last thing I want is for a student to damage their voice belting!

About Rose
I absolutely love music and really want to share that joy with other people. That is my primary goal in starting to teach lessons! Singing is something that can bring joy to anyone and it can always be improved. I am a beginner and the reason I want to start doing this now is because I want to do it for the rest of my life and can't think of any better way to start! I am also interested in teaching Spanish because I absolutely love the language and basic technology skills.
