I believe everyone has the ability to sing … some better than others, of course, -- but regardless, I believe every voice can make a beautiful sound. I believe learning to sing requires team work: with the proper instruction and learning tools from me, the instructor, and with the dedication (practice, practice, practice) from you, the student, a well-rounded singer can emerge.

If you can hear the proper note, I can help your vocal instrument play to its fullest abilities.

I began singing when I was five years old in church. I continued singing exclusively inspirational music until I was a teenager. At that time, in addition to the second soprano part I sang in a five-part harmony a Capella (without instrumental accompaniment) Gospel group, I also sang in a few bands (Rhythm and Blues, Jazz, and Rock). My undergraduate studies we
re completed at the American University, where I majored in Communications (B.A.), and minored in Music, voice being my instrument. During my undergraduate studies, I was recruited and performed as the lead female vocalist for a Rock band that a few fellow music students had formed. While in college, I was trained in classical voice, piano, music theory, musical theater performance, and vocal pedagogy (vocal training). My vocal pedagogy studies credentialed me to become a professional vocal instructor. I began teaching voice after I earned my degree, and have been teaching private voice lessons for over ten years.

Most of my present expertise in teaching voice grew from my vocal pedagogy studies, my teaching experience which has developed over time, my own personal vocal dedication, and my training and understanding of various genres of vocal performance. My present singing career is as an inspirational singer; my vocal students encompass various genres in which I have experience, including: Inspirational, Rhythm and Blues, Jazz, Rock, Classical, as well as various degrees of popular music.

*** Audition Preparation ***
I have coached many of my students to prepare for auditions: auditions to be accepted into performing arts schools, parts in musicals and plays, joining a band or vocal ensemble, as well as auditions for televised singing shows, such as "The Voice," "Sunday's Best," "American Idol" and "The X Factor."

*** Lesson Details ***
I teach students by using the tried and true techniques I have found to be successful, and allow the student to be my guide as to which direction to take with his or her vocal training. Whether the student is a novice, a professional, or somewhere in between, each student, after obtaining the basic singing knowledge and techniques, will have a vocal training schedule geared to his or her individual needs and development. Lessons are for the most part very casual in nature, and the student’s dedication (practice, practice, practice) will dictate whether or not the lessons become stricter. A few months into the vocal instruction, students will be given the opportunity to learn more about reading music and sight singing, if he or she so chooses, as well as vocal performance techniques for singing in front of an audience. Within one year, dedicated students may also have the opportunity to show off what they have learned, and perform in front of an audience at a recital with other vocal students. Please note that my preference is to work with teens age 13 through adults of any age. I believe that younger voices need more time to develop and stand to be damaged if too much stress is put on them too soon. However, exceptions for children under 13 may be made for gifted young singers.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Home studio- entry room of home, baby grand piano, seating area, dry erase board, mirrors
Music Studio- one recording studio, seating area, classroom

*** Travel Equipment ***
If needed, I provide a portable piano keyboard, microphone with amplifier, paper handouts of lessons, etc. The student needs to have paper to take notes and a writing instrument.

*** Specialties ***
Most of my voice lesson experience has been with adults, and contemporary popular and inspirational music.

Ms. Valyncia was an amazing coach. She was very patient , very honest and very professional. She pushed me beyond my comfort zone and I was able to improve my breathing, improve my range and put some personality into my performance. That was a long time ago but I plan on booking her again as my coach. I highly recommend her ! You will definitely become a better singer / performer when working with her , as long as you put the work in.

About Aleksis
My name is Aleksis B., but many of my students know me as Mr. B. I am a professional instructor and performing musician who combines a love of music with a desire to help others who want to achieve their highest musical potential. I try to make that passion show in everything I do.

My education includes classical voice training with Michele Howard Hansen, an opera singer that often performs at the Kennedy Center. I studied piano with Geoffrey Chappell, who writes for Jazz Times. I also received compositional training on multiple instruments from Stanley Cowell, who recorded and performed with legends like Miles Davis.

I have been performing professionally since 1992. I studied education in college and did my student teaching in a music class at Goshen Elementary School in Gaithersburg, Maryland.

I have been teaching music pr
ofessionally now for over twenty years. Some students want to take a few lessons to see if it is something they will enjoy, others have worked with me for over a decade. I have mentored several students who have gone on to professional careers. I have experienced a lot of success teaching young children and those with special needs. I have been blessed with a tremendous amount of patience and truly enjoy teaching anyone who wants to learn.

Whatever your goals or abilities, I look forward to working with you!

*** Lesson Details ***
Experience fun based lessons as my teaching approach is relaxed and inspirational. I enjoy working with all ages, adjusting my teaching methods to accommodate your learning style and abilities. Learn to play the music you love! You learn best when you enjoy what you are playing, I can help you play along with your favorites or even write your own songs. I always ask my students at the beginning of a lesson "What would you like to do today?" Then structure the lesson accordingly into a routine that the student can practice on their own. Generally the time is divided into warm ups, learning new material, then picking a fun song the student choses. Whether your interest is Classical, Jazz, Rock, Pop music, etc... I'm here help you reach your goals so let's make your dreams come true with music together!

*** Travel Equipment ***
Books, Guitar, music stand, metronome, picks, tuner, page clips, capo, media player, laptop, Keyboard (on request), and recording equipment (on request)

*** Specialties ***
With Voice I specialize in helping people prepare for auditions such as American Idol. I have students who simply want to be karaoke stars. I have several professional singers that hire me as a voice coach and producer for recording sessions. I have taught children as young as 2 and those that retired with a lifelong dream to sing. Though my training is classical, I can teach Jazz, Pop, Rock, Rap, R&B, etc...whatever is fun for the student. I highly recommend learning to read music but I do not push it unless parents want their child to.

With Piano I can teach traditionally from Alfred and Bastien Piano Courses depending if they are auditory or visual learners. For Kinesthetic learners I use Hanon scale exercises and Rothman Rhythm Exercises. For those that want to learn notation I introduce classical and Jazz composers unless there is a popular artist/band/movie theme etc...that they would like to learn. However I do not push students to read music unless their parents would prefer it. I tend to keep more students that want to learn to play by ear especially adults by using rhythm training and music theory exercises and then applying them to songs they love. For piano I haven't had much success with children younger than 3. I also have a lot experience working with special needs children.

For Guitar I teach Classical, Acoustic, and Electric all styles and genres. I encourage sight reading but don't mind using tabs. I use more exercises with these students, since the first month students have a hard time making a sound. I try to make the lessons fun by having students strum chords along with songs they chose. I teach lead and rhythm even songwriting and composition. Job satisfaction for me is seeing my students leave a lesson with a smile on their face so I make sure to be a fun based teacher that doesn't give the student a hard time about not practicing.

For Recording and Performance I use the knowledge I gained doing Pro Audio Sales for Guitar Center from 2000-2002 to help clients build their own home studio. I have lots of producers and engineers I work with on a regular basis to produce broadcast quality audio and video recordings and help my students use their lessons and pre-production for those opportunities. I can teach Garage Band or Pro Tools classes on navigating the software and utilizing all the commands. I can also teach room acoustics and using the right microphone and how to position them with the right equipment and the right acoustics to get the best possible tone that they are looking for. I can also teach editing, mixing, looping, sampling, midi, and mastering so that the student can eventually work on their own writing, performing, and recording their music.

I'm an opera singer by trade, but I absolutely love teaching musical theater. I fully believe that no matter what genre a singer wants to specialize in, a good proper technique is the thing that will get them the results they want. With my musical theater students, I focus mainly on breath and repertoire.

About Delaney
Hi! I am a conservatory trained classical singer who has been performing professionally for nine years and teaching privately for six. I'm very comfortable teaching a wide variety of genres and tailor my teaching style entirely to a student's level of experience, goals, voice type, age and musical interests. In addition to teaching vocal technique and repertoire, I am very comfortable teaching essential musical skills such as sight singing and music theory.
As a performer, I have appeared with such companies as Washington National Opera, Baltimore Concert Opera, Lyric Opera Baltimore, The Art Song Preservation Society and Peabody Opera Theater.

As a teacher, I fully believe that you don't have to want to be a professional singer in order to want voice lessons. I love teaching students who simply love music and want to be better at it.
Even though I'm a professional singer myself, I believe that the point should always be to enjoy singing, and whether your goal is to make money as a singer or to feel more confident doing karaoke (both real things that have brought students to me!), I want you to have fun doing it. I also want to show you that singing is a skill, and anyone can learn to do it.

*Note about my apartment: I teach lessons in my home, and I have a pet kitten. She's extremely friendly and would love nothing more than to bask in your attention, but if you'd prefer not to be around her or you are allergic, it's no problem at all. I'm happy to make sure she's kept in a different room during your lesson. All you have to do is let me know before your lesson that you'd prefer not to be around her, and you won't see her at all.

Broadway/Musical Theater has a rich and exciting history, evolving from opera to operetta, to major movie productions from the golden era of Hollywood in the 1940's/ 1950's to radical social and political themes from the 1960's (a la Hair) to present day Hamilton. We survey this history with songs spanning the Musical Theater genre, and focus on songs of student's choosing. Exploration of story-line, character study, and "song as monologue" are major considerations within lessons. Audition preparation can be part of the lessons as indicated by the student. In terms of the Broadway "sound", we use exercises that expand the voice in volume, range and emotional expression.

About Rachel
A graduate of Duke Ellington School for the Arts and the prestigious Berklee College of Music, Rachel Panay is a 6 time Billboard Club charting singer/songwriter in the Dance music genre. She recently returned to her musical theatre roots appearing as Rose in Theatre Lab's production of The Secret Garden. Rachel is also a Wolftrap resident teaching artist in DC schools and has been commissioned by Wolftrap to create and perform her original children's performance piece, Jazz Cat/Blues Kitty.

As teacher, Rachel is warm, friendly & energetic. Her passion for every facet of music is expressed in her desire to impart that same appreciation to her students. She tailors lessons according to the individual student's goals and interests.

With younger students, Rachel communicates regularly with parents so they can work together to
get the most out of lessons!

Rachel knows her stuff but I felt like she was rushing our lessons or cutting them short for the next student. The lessons were also generic and all we did was warm-ups. She'd promise we'd get to the song next time but we never got through the entire thing after five lessons and there was no progression.

Piano lessons with Rachel were a gift from a friend and it has been one of the best gifts I’ve ever received. From day one I knew I had the right teacher because of how she responded to all of my questions of “why”. She appreciates and feeds off of my curiosity which in turn nourishes and excites me. She explains the theory and why music works the way it does. We’ve even dabbled into voice a bit. Continuing piano lessons with her has been the best thing I’ve done this year and I’m looking forward to many more lessons.

Rachel is an outstanding piano teacher -- especially for adult students.

As an exceptional teacher, she knows exactly how to motivate a student by making the subject both fun and rewarding. She knows music theory so extensively that her lessons are more than simply about playing keys on the piano. My understanding of the piano is so much richer because she presents every lesson in the context of theory.

Rachel is particularly adept in tailoring a piano program around the student's interests and learning style. This has made the lessons fun as I quickly learned to play songs that interest me.

I would recommend Rachel for any student -- young or mature -- who is interested in learning to play the piano as a lifetime skill.

From the beginning vocalist with little to no ear, to the experienced singer with a BA in vocal performance; in the 6+ years I have been teaching, I have worked with them all. Having graduated from the American Musical and Dramtic Academy, my favorite style is musical theater, but I love working in all of them. From pop to classical, to country and beyond. Let's sing it! Starting with a focus on technique, and then moving towards a heavy focus on storytelling, together, we will get your voice where you want it to be. Tell me what your vocal goals are, and we will map out how to get you there!

About Ariel
I graduated from the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in Los Angeles in 2009, where I professionally trained as a singer, actor and dancer. Musical theater is my love, but I enjoy all music and have been teaching for 6 years.

My teaching style is 100% goal based. Tell me what you want to see happen with your voice, and I will map out a course to get you there. No one voice is alike, so "cookie cutter" lessons only work for a few. With a heavy focus on technique and performance, I love mixing it up and finding new exercises that are as unique as my students are.

I teach all levels of vocalist, even those self proclaimed as "tone-deaf." Everyone can sing, some just have to work harder than others. I do extensive ear training for the less naturally inclined. I also teach the basics of reading music and theory, for those interested in
vocal sight-reading.

Three of my daughters have taken voice from Ariel. One trained for 5 years with her. She not only taught her classical and broadway but also built her ability up to the point of singing for hours in a rock band. She also gave her guidance in her acting roles as well, and this lead to several awards. My second daughter went from a shy child to being confident enough to audition and earn leading roles in musicals. My last daughter has a few delays and was having a hard time with memorizing and pronunciation, Ariel was very patient with her and always built her up. I can not express the thanks I have for her and the amazing improvement that my daughter has made.

Not only is she an amazing vocal teacher of all genres, she is an amazing mentor for my children. They always leave her lessons feeling like they can do anything.

A student’s learning experience should be fun, exciting and inspiring, as well as stimulating and challenging. Over the years, I have come to realize that all students respond differently to concepts and materials presented in studio or class, depending on their backgrounds, interests, and learning styles. Prior knowledge has a significant effect on a student’s perception of new information, and therefore, instruction should be flexible and uniquely tailored to address each student’s needs, goals, strengths, and weaknesses.

In teaching the vocal technique, I frequently utilize my science background in my teaching, especially when explaining scientific concepts such as the acoustics of sound and its relation to singing; however, I also acknowledge the fact that some students respond much better to other teaching methods. I always aim to be well-equipped to present the information through multiple approaches and tools, which include imagery and metaphors.

with the technique and fundamentals of Classical Training.
Opera - Musical Theatre - Pop - Jazz - Rock

I'm a firm believer that any style can be performed HEALTHILY with good technique! Don't let anyone fool you,
SINGING THE WRONG WAY IS DANGEROUS!

You can PERMANENTLY damage your instrument with poor technique.
Learn how to treat your instrument with respect!
...And you'll learn how to sound good too. =)

About Carl
Hello!

If you're reading this, it's because you like music and you are interested in taking lessons... and I think THAT'S GREAT!

Everyone has to begin somewhere. For me, my parents started me on lessons for the Violin when I was four years old. Later I played Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, Concert (Upright) Bass, and discovered my chief instruments, the Voice and the Guitar. Because of that foundation, I have already had a life in music, and not just the classical music I was exposed to as a youngster.

I'm an opera singer, I'm a guitarist, and I'm an Audio Engineer. (For those of you who might not know, an Audio Engineer is someone who is trained in the art of recording and recording technology. We know about the SCIENCE of sound itself!) I've got a varied background in many different styles, and what it takes to PERFORM them, and that's wha
t I can bring to the table as YOUR music teacher. I've been on the opera stage with an orchestra, sung in a jazz band for swanky gala events, and played in dive bars with my rock band.

But please, before we begin, allow me to temper your expectations: Nobody, no matter how talented, reached their musical prime in a day, a week, or even a year. Musical training takes a great deal of discipline, focus, and perseverance.

I'm still working at it, too. =)

Together, we can work to realize YOUR musical goals, one day at a time.
