I have a M.M. in vocal performance from the Chicago College of Performing Arts and have extensive operatic training. I teach an open throat technique (appoggio) that allows the singer to sing with freedom, and access their entire range evenly. I also work with students to develop style, interpretation, languages, and acting ability.

About Benjamin

I have extensively studied vocal performance for many years and continue to add to my own technique. I have a Master of Vocal Performance Degree from the Chicago College of Performing Arts. I have a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology, where I extensively studied the anatomy of the voice. I am th

Ben - You can't expect to be an excellent singer over night

Me - Oh yeah I can (in my mind)

(end of lesson)

Me - I'm done (I quit)!

Ben - You're getting it; it takes time and practice (learning your voice).

Six month update: I am still very much pleased with my lessons with Ben. My confidence is growing and I'm actually starting to understand how to use my voice. I may not be where I want to be Yet, but I'm moving in the right direction; it takes time and practice.

The goal of training the voice is to create a strong, unified sound through the entire range of the voice. With regular practice and training, the quality of the voice will improve, the range will expand and you will become a more confident performer.

About Robert

A native of Chattanooga, TN, Robert T. has been hailed by critics as a “sonorous-voiced” bass-baritone with “rich tones” who creates “a solid foundation for the entire performance.” That’s the first sentence of my professional biography. I thought I'd use it to get the ball rolling. I was

I am astonished at how my voice has developed working with Michelle and Robert. As a soprano, I had lost so much range. Come to find out, singing incorrectly for about 40 years will do that to you. I had never taken voice lessons prior, so unfortunately, I learned to sing all wrong. Through vocal pedagogy, I now understand healthy and correct singing techniques.
They both have an amazing way of explaining things, and when I have that "a-ha" moment- it is glorious! I've learned more than I ever imagined- I never thought I would ever sing Italian or French! They support exploring different musical styles and genres, and do we ever have fun! It is my weekly therapy, and I am so grateful I found them as my teachers.
I highly recommend them for your mental health, personal development and the pure love of singing.

Rob and Michelle are by very far the best voice instructors I've had and I have had several. They are both very personal and have a great approach to teach the fundamentals and take you along a great journey to become a better singer! I highly recommend them both to anyone interested in developing their singing abilities!

I absolutely adore working with Robert in preparation for my future in the voice and music industry. His technique and approach for both the voice and music theory is not only helpful but also fun. Under his instruction I'm both able to learn both technique on how to better my sound and the anatomy behind it. I enjoy going to voice twice a week and I always look forward to my lessons as they approach. I truly feel I am being prepared in the bests ways possible for my future as well as the most fun learning environment voice teachers have to offer.

RE: Advanced Classical Singers (College and older...and in some cases High School)

ALL CLASSICAL SINGERS after time will slowly chip away at all languages and classical styles. It depends on the level. Fach presentation is important. We will pick out relevant arias that reflect this. Mozart, Bel Canto, French, German, American Opera etc; (ARIAS only).

For some, we will want to have a mix of arias and art songs in Italian, French, German and English (minimum).

Having representation in all languages is important so you are ready for any audition requirement.

RE: Young Classical Singers (Middle School-High School)

Serious classical singers of all voice types will work from the 24 Italian Arias book.

Other repertoire depends on voice type & development expectations/goals.

Young sopranos will get some Debussy Chansons as it sits quite a bit higher & it's great for technique. With young mezzos, we will find pieces that address the chest & mixed voice head-on. ...

I have had a wonderful time training with Mary over the past couple of weeks. She's been very patient with me during our lessons, and she is very helpful with information in and out of the lessons.
I was hesitant to take some lessons at first because I hadn't sung for a while. There was a point when I was in a choir group in school, I was passionate enough to compete against other schools. But after I graduated, I wasn't able to find time to further practice my singing skills. Signing up to take lessons with her has restored my voice a lot, as well as teach me new things to make my voice more clear. I've had a wonderful time learning from Mary and hope to take more lessons with her in the future. For anyone looking for a professional, serious chance to train your voice for the better, Mary would be your best option.

I teach from a very technical standpoint. Form and function, physicality, and basic science can teach you a lot about singing properly. My goal is to get the student to a point where they can teach themselves when they build their voice and the lesson becomes a weekly or monthly check in of the progress. As singers we want good results, but we have to focus on the process and the result will follow on its own correctly without forcing the result we want. This process of optimal sound and beautiful tone can take some time, but when the steps are taken correctly, the results become ideal.

"Jonathan and I have been colleagues for 6 years now. I routinely go to him for vocal check-ups and when I have challenges with technical issues. He is always able to help me understand things on a simple level. I sometimes get overwhelmed with the complexity of the human voice and have trouble putting into practice techniques I learn in voice lessons. With Jonathan, I have found that the approach is very friendly and non-judgmental. I am not afraid to make an ugly sound, which can be the first step to unleashing your voice. I highly recommend Jonathan for any voice level."

"I have been singing opera for 7 years now, and Christine had the most thorough teaching process by far! I found my real voice underneath all the conformity I had been taught through choir and am now moving through singing more powerful and with my "real voice." She is open to workshopping repertoire that you are interested in, and suggests things that will help you grow your voice while not pushing an agenda, so you feel as though you have lots of artistic freedom.
Also just a super warm and authentic person. Overall a great experience!"

"I wrote a review several months ago after my first lesson. I have been taking lessons once a week with Michelle and Robert for several months now and felt it was time to write another review. I listened to a recording of my last lesson and compared it to my first lesson. Wow, what a difference! I couldn't believe it was me on the recording! My voice has developed a powerful and refined quality it never had before. My singing has become effortless and my range has expanded greatly and continues to expand. I can't recommend them enough. I look forward to every lesson because not only are they amazing vocal coaches, they are the nicest people you will ever meet. They are enthusiastic, encouraging, fun, and quite hilarious. 8 Beautiful Opera Arias for Beginner Singers

It is always exciting when a vocal student is ready to start studying his or her first operatic aria! One of the best things about being a classical singer is knowing you have so many great years ahead of you. After all, you’re considered in your prime in your 40s. That being said, realize that the voice you have now and the repertoire you’ll first study will be very, very different from what you sing later on in your career. It’s absolutely crucial that you sing repertoire that is …
