Let me help you develop your REAL VOICE and hone your skills as a performer.

About Michelle Kei
Michelle Kei I., a soprano of Japanese and American heritage, "uses her strong dramatic soprano to slice through the orchestra" in a varied repertoire that encompasses Verismo to Broadway. Possessing a captivating stage presence and praised as "superb," "gifted," and a "constant breakaway from the rest of the vocal pack," she has entertained audiences on stages around the world.

Those are the first two sentences of my professional biography. I thought I'd use them to get the ball rolling.

Ever since I can remember, I've always been a performer. I come from a very musical family. I was always singing! I sang at home, in church, in show-choir and musicals at school - basically anywhere I could find an audience!

When I decided to go to college to study music, I chose the prestigious School of Music at Indiana University. I wanted to
sing Broadway, but my father encouraged me to study classical singing first, so I'd have the foundations for a bulletproof technique that could endure a long and demanding career. I'm so glad that he did!

Who would have thought that I would learn to LOVE opera?!? It had everything that Broadway did, and so much more! Plus, I learned to fill a theater with the sound of my voice and soar over the orchestra WITHOUT A MICROPHONE!!!

Would you like to learn how to do that? I can show you how.

Let me help you find your REAL VOICE!!!

What you can expect from me:

- I will provide a supportive and effective work environment.

- I will make recommendations on repertoire based upon your goals

- I will provide you with an individualized regimen of study based upon your strengths and development, not a standardized format of study.

What I expect from you:

- Learn the musical selections we choose. Your lesson time should be used for improving your technique, not learning your music.

- Leave your outside life at the door. It will be waiting for you when you leave.

- Enjoy the process. Experiment. If it doesn't work, try something else. Take constructive criticism as an opportunity for improvement, not as a personal attack.

- Commit yourself fully! Be engaged. The benefit you receive is equal to the work you put into the process.

Michelle is so talented ! She’s very knowledgeable mixing a little bit of technique, music theory, and vocal tips into one awesome lesson. She is encouraging and also quick to assess and give helpful feedback. I have already learned quite a bit and definitely want to continue additional classes with her.

I love teaching. I go into every lesson with the belief that the student is there to learn; if they weren't interested in learning, they wouldn't be there. Because I have always had diverse musical interests, I create a stress-free atmosphere for my students by allowing them to pursue whatever avenues of music interest them. My degrees may be in Jazz Studies and Performance, but I have extensive experience with Classical and Popular music; I provide a unique perspective and enthusiasm to every student.

About Michael
I am a professional trumpet player, singer, arranger and educator based in Manayunk within Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Born into a musical family in Peoria, IL, I began playing cello at thde age of two, but eventually was drawn to jazz trumpet and voice, while having a keen sense of music theory and piano. I studied music at Cincinnati Conservatory of Music and Northwestern University. While at Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, I was awarded a FIPSE grant to travel to Brazil and study traditional samba music. While there, I worked as a clinician at Faculdade Cantareira in Brasilia. After CCM, I received my Masters in Jazz Studies from Northwestern University under the tutelage of Victor Goines (tenor saxophonist for Jazz at Lincoln Center) and Brad Mason (Current Musical Director for Blood, Sweat and Tears), during which, I was selected t
o perform as the “jazz trumpet” chair in part of Disney’s highly selective All American College Band.

After graduate school in Evanston, IL, I moved into the heart of the city of Chicago. For 3 years, I played trumpet and sang jazz standards most Thursday evenings at the famous Green Mill Cocktail Lounge, one of Chicago’s oldest jazz clubs. In addition to that, I helped start The Syndicate, my hip-hop brass band that offers a blend of funk, R&B and jazz. I also played with other groups such as Four Star Brass Band, and J-Livi and the Party, which released an album in July of 2016 called “Come and Share My Life," whom I still play with.

In addition to playing trumpet, I also am an accomplished classical singer, presently predominantly performing with the Crossing, a Grammy Nominated professional chamber choir conducted by Donald Nally. This 17-18 season, I'm singing with Conspirare, Apollo’s Fire, The Crossing, Vocal Arts Ensemble (Cincinnati), Variant 6, Madison Choral Project, ekmeles (NYC), and Choral Arts Philadelphia. Recently, I made my debut as a soloist with the Philadelphia Orchestra performing Chris Deviney’s “Pat Metheney Concerto.”

The most important aspect of vocal training that I will emphasize is breath support. Connecting to the body when singing will ensure vocal protection and prevent unwanted vocal strain. I will also focus on gaining control through scales and breathing. I would like my students to gain consistency in their lessons each week by providing them with new challenges and helping them to gain new tools when practicing. Applying these fundamental elements of healthy singing into each student's repertoire is the ultimate goal in these lessons.

About Christina
My name is Christina and I am very passionate about the vocal arts, specifically Opera. Opera was a surprise in my life that I discovered in college. I am now currently pursuing my MM degree in vocal arts at UCLA. The classical technique can provide a great foundation to healthy singing, ensuring a long and healthy vocal life.

Along side opera and other genres of singing, I believe basic knowledge in piano is extremely beneficial in improving musicality and an understanding of each piece. Piano greatly improves sight reading and ones ability to learn music quickly and efficiently. It can allow one to develop an understanding of harmony and context within each unique piece of music.

I would love to help and guide those interested in music, specifically classical voice, opera, musical theater, and piano. I would love to share the gre
at joy it brings me with others and pass down what I have learned over the years. I have completed courses in music pedagogy and education alongside my degree, and believe in shaping my lessons around each individual's learning style so that each student may continue to grow while having fun. Helping each student develop their own unique musical identity is one of the main goals with these lessons.

Experienced teacher of 6 years, mentoring students of all ages and abilities in singing, music theory, and composition. Whether you have never sung a note in your life (and don't even know what a note is!) or have been singing all your life, I can meet you where you are at and help you progress even further! I specialize in vocal technique, ear training, composition technique, sight reading, and teaching theory from the very basics all the way up to Roman Numeral analysis. Please feel free to message me!

About Sarah
As a Freshman at St. Olaf College double majoring in church music and music education, I live and breathe music! I have been teaching for six years now, having started out mentoring children in the Royal School of Church Music, a program founded in music theory, sight reading, vocal technique, and responsibility.

I am also a freelance composer with multiple years of composition and music theory experience. I can mentor students of all ages and abilities in music writing software (particularly MuseScore and Sibelius) and help students channel their inner creativity in composing.

Having taken classical voice lessons for six years, I can teach students proper breath support, vibrato, releasing tension, sound, resonance, and placement. Additionally, I have vast musical theatre and jazz experience and can help students to pull standards in
all these genres for their pleasure.

As I am a younger teacher, I relate quite well with my students and have been informed of my patient nature. I am mindful of every student's individual ability and understand that the learning curve varies from person to person. Since I have worked with children for so long, I can easily convey theoretical concepts in different ways, using basic metaphors for a student's understanding.

If you take lessons with me, I guarantee that you will feel more confident in yourself and your musical abilities. And you will be able to see progression from week to week in your voice, as long as you practice and make a real effort! I am here to help.

I believe that lessons should be informative, but also collaborative. I encourage my students to dive into their creative side, while teaching them the techniques they need to be successful! I am well versed in all genres of music (classical, opera, pop, jazz, musical theater, country, etc.) and, therefore, am able to allow my students to work on music they love and WANT to work on.

About Jocelyn
A native of Philadelphia, Jocelyn recently moved with her husband to Highland Park. She is a graduate of Westminster Choir College in Princeton, NJ, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in vocal performance. She also cultivated a love for choral music, maintaining an active career with professional choral ensembles around the country, and becoming a member of the first American choir to give a performance in Rome’s Sistine Chapel.

Before moving to the Chicago area, Jocelyn maintained an active music studio of more than 40 piano and voice students. Over the past ten years, she has orchestrated numerous recitals, performances, and recording sessions for her students. Being the oldest of five girls, she has always loved working with children, as well as adults, and inspiring creativity through music.

Jocelyn’s goal as an instructor is not
only to teach the basics of technique and music appreciation, but to leave her students excited and eager to continue their studies and practice after each lesson.
