Opera involves all vocal techniques at once while learning with Opera arias and art songs.

About Marissa
My musical journey started in high school when my algebra teacher saw me in the hallway, grabbed my hand and brought me to the choir room to sign up for The Sound of Music auditions. To this day I cannot believe my math teacher unknowingly sent me straight down a path that I would walk the rest of my life. After The Sound Of Music I never left music. I kept singing in high school by participating in the school musicals and different choir ensembles. When it came to college I started taking private lessons and music classes for fun until I realized this is my passion and I wanted to make a life of this. When you wake up everyday and the first thing you do is sing at that point there was no other way to live. There I started my journey with really learning the voice as an instrument and how it works. I found that I am a vocal scientist
at heart believing you will go a long way as long as you know how to grow. Being a vocal scientist, I find it so interesting to know what exactly needs to happen when we sing in order sing in a healthy and beautiful manner.

While I was at Moraine Valley after I firmly chose music I felt I needed more of a diverse program so I can answer any possible music based question. I then went on to get my degree at VanderCook College of Music where they teach nothing but music education. Their program intensely teaches all the band and orchestral instruments on top general education classes and your major, mine being voice. While I was there I also took the time to study privately with our percussion professor to learn rhythms and with our sight singing and ear training professor to further develop my ear and knowledge. All in all I have been studying the voice for 13 years and counting. I do all this so that I could pass that experience down to you.

▪Lesson Details▪
In my lessons I like to teach vocal techniques such as raising your soft palate, correct breathing techniques, and a forward placement. These are the tools to help a vocal musician grow for the rest of their lives.

Another part of being a vocal musician that I teach is ear training and or rhythm. These are things I wish I would have learned earlier on and are essential to being an independent musician.

Expression (including body movements, hand gestures, facial expression, and musical expression such as accents and dynamics) are a large part of performing as a vocalist and are definitely things we prepare as well.

I like to keep a more uplifting environment when teaching so although you should expect a push for success, you should always feel comfortable and not afraid to make mistakes.

▪Performance opportunities▪
Studio vocal recitals

▪Studio Equipment▪
Lessons in the studio room, electric piano

▪Travel Equipment▪
I can provide literature and a music stand while the students should have a full length keyboard and or piano.

▪Specialties▪
I teach rhythm, sight singing and ear training, general musical terms, expression, and specific vocal techniques.

Marissa is a wonderful teacher. I have never had singing lessons before. My first experience was remarkable. I love how comfortable she makes me feel when I go to practice. She has so much patience, which is another thing I love about her. I would refer the world to her if I could. I will definitely be referring my cousin.

Bel canto instruction and technique with a clear outline of warm up techniques using Kristin Linklater techniques. I am a classically trained singer, familiar with the repertoire, as well as diction in Italian, French, German and Latin. The goal is utter freedom and beauty of the voice, enabling you to express the scope of contemporary and classical composers.

About Wendy
I am a professional singer, songwriter and actor working in the Chicago area for many years. I have a B.F.A. in Theater/Voice from The University of Kansas and an M.A. in Interdisciplinary Arts from Columbia College Chicago. I've been teaching private vocal instruction since 2003: I host the Singer's Salon in Chicago, a unique and supportive venue for singer's to become more comfortable performing before an audience. I also instruct workshops for vocal technique and performance. For 10 years I was the lead singer for The Red Apples, an acoustic/electric roots band that performed an eclectic mix of rock, swing, blues, country and jazz. Within the past year I have re-energized my theater and cabaret career, appearing at Davenport's Cabaret, in a new solo show, as well as productions at Big Noise Theater and Stage 773. I've also completed tw
o short films and started working on my own web series, about my life as a singer/voice teacher. I also have an art song project consisting of original material with composer Jaroslaw Golembiowski. As a singer and actress I have performed with many major theaters in the Chicago area, including Court Theater, Victory Gardens, National Jewish Theater, Bailiwick Theater, and Prop Theater.

*** Lesson Details ***
As a classically trained singer I will instruct you in all aspects of singing technique, from breath control and support to improving your tone, range, flexibility and resonance. I have recently completed training in Somatic Voicework, The LoVetri Method, which has enriched my understanding of the mechanics and health of the voice, as well as applications of technique to CCM or contemporary musical styles of singing.
My familiarity with a variety of musical styles from pop/rock, R&B, and country, to musical theater, lounge and jazz makes me an ideal teacher for those interested in contemporary styles.

I have spent many years developing my own style of singing and instruction. I draw on my experiences and training not only in music, but theater and movement, (Linklater, Alexander Technique, Grotowski) to create a well rounded approach to singing and performing. As an instructor, I am most interested in helping students find their true voice and artistic style. I teach students to find expression through and with a foundation of technique, rather then in spite of it. I also am very interested in helping students deal with the mental/emotional aspects of performance, an all important area so frequently ignored by music teachers. My style is nurturing, yet disciplined, and sprinkled liberally with good-natured humor."

*** Studio Equipment ***
My studio space is fully equipped with a piano, P.A. system with microphones, CD, MP3 player for tracks, and ability to record lessons if the student desires.

*** Travel Equipment ***
Please have a piano (in tune!) or keyboard for use in your in home lessons.

*** Specialties ***
I am classically trained, but I am very adept at teaching music in a wide variety of styles, including most contemporary styles of music including pop/rock, roots, swing, jazz and blues, country, r&b, and of course musical theater and cabaret. My band performs an eclectic mix of originals and covers in the roots rock genre, and I write music as well. I have many years of experience in the theater as an actress, and I coach acting technique and performance. I coach singer/songwriters, and all types of singers, of all ages. I have a workshop that specializes in helping people learn to perform better in front of an audience, and I host the Singer's Salon in Chicago, which is a supportive opportunity to perform regularly! I also coach bands, to improve their vocals, harmonies, etc.

I emphasize classical technique from a physical perspective, and lessons are sometimes a body awareness workout. Read my profile carefully before you sign up with me. Through this physical approach, we discover what the student's voice truly is, instead of attempting to mimic popular artists.

Opera Voice lessons are the same as Classical Voice lessons, but emphasizing power, endurance, and opera repertoire.

Prospective Singing students of all levels MUST read the section Your First Singing Lesson, found on the subject page.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Singing is good for you. Healthy reasons to take singing lessons include deep breathing, balanced posture, relaxation, and abdominal strength. Additional benefits are confidence enhancement, cultural awareness, emotional expression, memory support, and stress relief. Some people sing to share spiritual joy.

About Melodie
Student GOALS
(1) Student learns how other artists use music to communicate, advocate, heal, and grow.
(2) Student learns how to use music for self-discovery of artistic aims.
(3) Singing student learns how own body functions as a musical instrument, on a flexible schedule.

I am Miss Melodie F, a highly experienced private lesson teacher of voice, piano, and theory. Please read my profile carefully before you sign up with me. Complete beginners are welcome. Advanced lessons are available for singing and voice only.

Are you an adult who misses the love of music you enjoyed before life responsibilities took over? If so, you are like most of my recent students.

I teach adult students private music lessons. My specialties and approaches are
(1) blending what the student wants with what the student needs,
(2) classical v
ocal technique from a body awareness perspective,
(3) how to sight-read keyboard scores, and
(4) music theory translated into something that makes sense.

If you don't practice that's not a deal breaker, but admit it so I can modify the plans to give you your money's worth.

You may schedule a lesson when you want or can afford one rather than being forced to take a lesson at the same time every week; that is the Schedule-As-You-Go option where lessons have no recurring schedule slot. I have weekday office hours available on a Schedule-As-You-Go basis which you won't find on the general availability information here on this profile.

Singing and Voice
Singing and voice lessons have minimum 45min duration. Do you want to do the physical work it takes to become a better singer? Do you have a place to practice? Have you read the "Your First Singing Lesson" section found on each Singing or Voice Subject Page and still want to take singing lessons with me? If you can’t say “Yes” to all of these things I can still work with you. Sign up for Music Theory lessons instead, tell me what you want to learn, and we can go from there.

Piano
Do you have regular access to a “real” piano, with weighted keys and a damper pedal? If all you have is an unacceptable keyboard sign up for Music Theory and I can still teach you how to read keyboard music, and play scales, chords, and songs by ear.

Music Theory
Music theory lessons are the most flexible option for general curiosity. You don't need much more than pencil and paper to start music theory lessons. Tell me what you’re interested in and I’ll teach it from a Music Theory perspective.

The current fee for a 45min lesson appointment in my studio is $41. Online singing and theory lessons are the same price. Lessons must be prepaid, with a strict 24hr cancellation deadline.

My teaching studio is a residential office in a high second floor walk-up near the intersection of Chicago and Ashland. I might be able to travel within East Village / Ukrainian Village / Wicker Park / Noble Square for an additional $15 travel fee. If I travel to your location we can negotiate younger ages and group fees.

Upfront deal breakers:
• I have a problem with fragrances. If I can smell something on you I may not be able to work with you. We could discuss online lessons as an alternative.
• One quietly observing adult human guest is welcome with 48-hour notice.
• If you are a singing student you need a place where you can practice and you must read the Your First Singing Lesson section prior to your first cancellation deadline.
• If you don’t have regular access to something that can legally be called a piano, including weighted keys and a damper pedal, don’t take Piano lessons.

Ask me a question using the Ask-A-Question feature. Watch my videos and think about it. I'm a good teacher. I sincerely appreciate the time it took you to read my profile. Thank you.

My very first singing lesson ever was informative, eye opening, well articulated with good imagery I could relate to, challenging, and fun. Melodie’s good coaching made me aware of both things I was doing somewhat well and tips for improving on them, and simple errors that we worked on in a very encouraging and corrective manner. I’m looking forward to practicing and my next lesson.

From late teen to adult. Lapsed opera singers welcome, too.
Language coaching, repertoire/aria help and more.

About Molly
I have been teaching for 17 years: kids, teens-even beginner vocalists in their seventies! Rockers, an "Idol" finalist, church musicians, lapsed opera singers, preschoolers. ...these are just a few of singers I have worked with, in person, in the classroom, and ONLINE (I just love teaching singers all over the country and the world!) .

What you get in voice lessons with me: laughter as you learn! I have learned solid classical vocal technique from the very best . I have trained with respected opera singers who have performed with companies such as Lyric Opera of Chicago, as well as leaders in vocal pedagogy. I believe everyone deserves the same useful tools- no matter what it is you like to sing!

I am patient and customize each and every lesson. Need more time on ear training? No problem . How about beginning music theory? I can
help with that, too. Are you feeling more confident, and want to focus more on song polishing and getting into the heart of your songs? Let's do it! Confidence an issue? I am a pro with very shy people. I'll get you out of your shell, relaxed, and having fun right away so we can free that voice of yours! I have worked with many singers who have been diagnosed with anxiety: you're in good hands and you can trust me with your voice.

I am also a drama teacher who has worked with groups as well as individuals. I love working with beginning acting students! I'll assist with monologue prep, improvisation, voice for the stage, body awareness, and more. I love being on stage and want you to see how fun it is to jump in and let go,too!

I am a constant student in the world of theatre. I have taken many courses with the Drama Teacher Academy, received a certificates in monologue, improv and musical theatre techniques. I want my students to have as many skills as possible, no matter where their love for theatre or music takes them.

In progress: certification to become an Ultimate Music Theory instructor for both individuals and groups, children , teen, and adult!

If you're interested in beginner ear training or music theory, I'd love to help you with that as well. I present it in a no-nonsense and fun manner! I'll provide you with simple worksheets to increase your confidence in learning the language of music, as well as run you through increasingly challenging patterns and sight reading for the ear training. Don't be afraid: I make it easy and customize it all. I used to be scared of theory,too- so I know what works!

I have been singing for over 20 years. Performances with the Lira Ensemble and Opera on Tap Chicago, and in master classes with international opera stars Alan Held and Lorna Haywood. Coaching with Collaborative Works Chicago and Rossini Opera Festival.

Studies in Rock Vocals, Voice Care, Improvisational Comedy, Holistic Voice, Acting, Foreign languages, Dalcroze, Speaking Voice for Singers, , Commercial Vocal Styles/Belting with Lisa Popeil, teacher mentoring workshop with Maestro David Jones. Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from Millikin University.

Additional workshops in Vocal Pedagogy with David Sabella-Mills, Dr. Karen Prokop, Melissa Cross (the queen of healthy scream technique and author of the Zen of Screaming!), Sheri Sanders ( Rock the Audition training), and Chicago Cabaret Professionals.

Certified CoreSinging Instructor- one of only a few in the U.S. trained by Meribeth Dayme, PhD, respected clinician and authority in vocal pedagogy and author of "The Singing Book".

Completed John Henny's New Science of Singing course as well as Nate Plummer's Musical Theater Coaching course, and Dr. Shannon Coates' "Vocal Instrument 101". I'm a student, too, and want to better serve my students by constant study!

My students do a variety of great things! One was a top 12 "American Idol" finalist. Current students perform in musicals, top rated choirs, and professional rock , jazz, and blues bands. Many have won awards for their singing at competitions such as NATS. Students of mine have also been accepted to prestigious performing arts high schools for both drama and music, as well as undergraduate music programs in the US and Europe.

Proud member of NATS and the Speakeasy Cooperative, a professional group of independent voice teachers.

I think if you can speak, you can sing. Everyone can and should sing! Don't let anything hold you back. I am a people person that is very passionate about music and singing, and want to be the teacher you'll trust with your voice. Come laugh and learn with me!

The goal of training the voice is to create a strong, unified sound through the entire range of the voice. With regular practice and training, the quality of the voice will improve, the range will expand and you will become a more confident performer.

About Robert
As a native of Chattanooga, TN, I have been hailed by critics as a “sonorous-voiced” bass-baritone with “rich tones” who creates “a solid foundation for the entire performance.”

That’s the first sentence of my professional biography. I thought I'd use it to get the ball rolling.

I wasn’t always a performer. In fact, I’m what you’d call an introvert, but I always loved music. In high school, I was pressured into auditioning for the school musical and I actually got a lead role! From that moment on I was hooked and the trajectory of my life was altered forever!

I went to Berry College for my Bachelor of Music Education degree. My voice teacher taught me how to fill a theater with the sound of my voice WITHOUT A MICROPHONE! He nudged me onward to get my Master’s degree at the prestigious School of Music at Indiana University, wh
ere I met my wife, Michelle Kei Ishuu, who is also a great performer and teacher. We often teach together, so you get twice the benefit in your lessons!

We have lived in San Diego and New York City. We’ve performed on stages across the country and throughout Europe and we’ve worked with some AMAZING artists over the years who have graciously shared their gifts with us. Now, we have the pleasure of sharing what we’ve learned with our students.

Do you want to learn a bulletproof singing technique that can be easily modified to sing anything from Opera to Broadway? I can teach you. Do you need someone to help you become a better performer and realize your full dramatic potential? I can do that, too.

The goal of learning to be a better performer is to perform better. Through our partnership with Southminster Presbyterian Church, we can offer you the added benefit of a supportive space to try out your new skills. When you’re performance-ready, you can perform for a live audience in one of our scheduled recitals or even as a special musical guest for one of Southminster’s regular church services.

Let me help you find your REAL VOICE!!!

Questions? Just ask. I look forward to hearing from you!

While instructing private voice students, I teach the functional approach to singing. This mindset allows the vocalist to focus on singing freely in all genres. I believe it is important to not only teach a wide variety of repertoire, but to also inform my students on vocal health. Along with a functional approach to the voice, I promote a safe and welcoming environment to make music in. If a student does not feel comfortable in the space they are in, then they will not perform to their fullest potential and I would not have completed my job. With some instruction, anyone can sing, and I provide the tools necessary to do so.

About Amber
My name is Amber, and I am a graduate of Indiana University of Pennsylvania and earned my Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education, as well as my Bachelor of Fine Arts in Vocal Performance. In addition to directing the Crimson Youth Choir and teaching privately in the IUPCMS, I directed/arranged music for the IUP Crimson Chords, an elite all-female a capella jazz ensemble. Last fall, I also directed Homer-Center’s Musical Annie and worked on Marion Center’s Musical Marry Poppins. I performed the lead role of Rosalina in IUP’s production of Die Fledermaus and have been a part of other productions including Le nozze di figaro, Suor Angelica, Beauty and the Beast, Hairspray, Guys and Dolls, Anything Goes and Godspell. I am also a first-place winner of the NATS Music Theatre competition, held at West Virginia University. I have just relo
cated to Chicago, IL to become a full-time music and voice teacher.

Like most music teachers, my passions started with performing myself, and then using those experiences to educate my students. I have be a part of several operas, musicals, choirs, pop and Jazz ensembles, and each experience taught me tactics that I would not have learned anywhere else. I then paired my performing knowledge with my knowledge of education and with that I have successfully taught choirs, bands, vocal a capella ensembles, classrooms, musicals, pit orchestras and many many voice and piano students from ages 5-63!

By day I teach K-5th grade music and by night I rock it out playing piano bar gigs or the music I write myself. In 2014 I struggled teaching all week and then losing my voice for weekend gigs. I began studying with two great voice teachers who gave me the tools needed to become the great performer and teacher I am today.

I graduated from Illinois State University in 2010 with a Bachelors degree in music education. I continue to study vocal pedagogy and geek out on how the voice works and finding the right solutions for all students.
