I can help beginners get started or coach advanced students who are preparing for auditions.
Thomas J. W. is an active music teacher, composer, adjudicator, and clinician in the greater Philadelphia area. He has over fifteen years experience as a concert band director, marching band director, jazz improvisation instructor, choral director, private instructor, and marching drill writer. His directing career has included small rural band programs, small metro programs, large high-achieving suburban programs, and non-profit youth bands. In addition to his band compositions, he also has over forty unpublished vocal arrangements to his credit, most written for use with collegiate men's a cappella groups. Thomas taught over 600 online and local private music lessons in 2016.
Thomas has a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education from The Pennsylvania State University. He holds a teaching certificate in the states of Pennsylvania
and New Jersey and has taught at the secondary level in both states. In addition to both instrumental and choral ensembles at Penn State, Thomas was a student leader in the Penn State Blue Band and a member of the brass section of the Cadets of Bergen County Drum and Bugle Corps in 1993 and 1994. He served as an Associate Director of the Warren Junior Military Band of Youngstown, Ohio from 1995 to 2005. He appeared in the Marquis Who's Who Among American Educators in 2004 and 2005, an honor rarely bestowed upon teachers, as students who appear in the Who's Who Among American High School Students must nominate them. He currently is a music teacher at the Center for Performing and Fine Arts of the PA Leadership Charter School in West Chester, PA and resides in Downingtown, PA with his wife and two sons.
Thomas will happily work with students on the autism spectrum or students with ADD.
*** Lesson Details *** My lessons are tailored to the needs and interests of each student. If a student is involved in school music ensembles, we will work with their lesson books from school in addition to material outside of the books, including SmartMusic, Noteflight, and teacher-created materials. We will focus on building proper tone production and individual technique - something that often is difficult to learn in a large ensemble setting.
I am capable of starting a beginner student on any band instrument including percussion, any classical string instrument (violin, viola, cello, string bass), and piano. I can begin a student on drum set and work with them through their first method book, but I would then recommend they find a specialized drum set teacher after a period of six to twelve months.
For advanced students, I work from selected conservatory etude books on developing advanced skills and can work with students on audition pieces for honors bands/orchestras or college auditions.
My lessons are a half-hour once a week, with the option of working for 45 minutes or 60 minutes.
Thomas is honestly an amazing musician and teacher. He was really patient with me. Despite having to deal with major timezone differences (as I live in Myanmar), he took the time to figure it out. Also, he helped me figure out the stuff it took me months to figure out. He also really knows what he's doing. I learned so much in that hour of practice. 10/10 would recommend him.

Fabulous! What a great teacher! And SO KNOWLEDGEABLE about all kinds of music! THANKS! looking forward to all my lessons!
Phil Norris has been teaching trumpet since 1983. He teaches the physical side of the trumpet as well as the musical side. The trumpet, being one of the most physically grueling instruments, demands this. He gives a customized routine for the student to do at home and he also helps with those who are having embouchure problems, whether they’ve developed a bad habit or have had to deal with braces. On the musical side, Phil teaches jazz improv, big band lead, how to play in a rock horn section, and even classical style. Of course reading music and helping with the student’s school material is also focused on.
*** Specialties *** I specialize in embouchure development and the physical side of playing a trumpet first. Of course I teach music too and help with a students' school band music, etc.
My son has been a trumpet student with Phil Norris for the past 3 years. I am very pleased with the instruction. Phil continues to work with Alex to improve his embouchure through various lip exercises and slurs. Also, works on diaphragm strength through various exercise. Alex is one of the top trumpet players at his school as a freshman. His range and tone has dramatically improved since working with Phil. Phil is fun and engaging as well. I highly recommend Phil to anyone looking for a competent and skilled music instructor.

I took lessons from Phil for 3 years
and played alongside him on a few gigs. Phil is the real deal. He can scream high notes, low notes, and everything in between. He can help you get results.

I have been taking lessons from Phil for almost two years. He is very patient making the student feel comfortable. He is not harshly critical. Just gives good feedback. He is a master of appropriately challenging the student. At times he will play along with me which I find helpful. If I miss a lesson he gives me make up lessons. His rates are more than fair. I highly recommend Phil for trumpet instruction.
I equally cover fundamentals, technique, tone production, classical, jazz and anything else the student might be interested in.
I have been teaching private lessons for close to 10 years and have been an active performer for even longer, playing in all different types of groups, from rock bands and jazz groups to orchestras and brass bands. I studied music at Frostburg State University (Bachelors) and the Peabody Conservatory (Masters). I can teach just about any age and skill level and cover anything you are interested in learning; whether its a certain style, genre, technique or song.
*** Lesson Details *** My lessons are laid back, with a focus on perfecting the basics. Most students work out of a method book appropriate to their skill level. Aside from that we'll also spend time learning songs and pieces of the students choice. With the right amount of effort, you'll know your way around your instrument in no time at all
*** Travel Equipment ***
Will provide sheet music and exercises. My students should have a working instrument as well as any method book or sheet music we are working on.
Very pleasant teacher. First lesson went well. Thank you

Nathan is kind and encouraging. My son is enjoying the lessons and making progress towards playing tapas and reveille. He sounds good!! Online classes are convenient to add into a busy schedule.
May 24, 2019
This is the first lesson I got to listen to of my son working with Nathan. Usually I'm not home from work. I am really impressed with how much he was able to help my son improve so quickly. I wish we had started this much sooner.
Lessons are broken down into multiple areas that guide you through all aspects of how to play trumpet.
1. Recommended Listening - Let's find what you like to listen to, and let's explore similar and unsimilar music. Exposure is the key to learning. 2. Let's learn how brass instruments work. Trumpeters have to learn how to use their air, lips, and musicality as a way to make the trumpet easy to play... Think of this as the pushups and situps of the trumpet. We have to do them in order to make the instrument playable. 3. Let's learn how music works - Music Theory lets us understand music. This is like learning the alphabet. Once you learn the alphabet, we can learn to spell, write, and read. Once you understand music theory, music becomes much more organized and easier to understand. 4. Let's learn the music you want to learn, and use the music you like to give you assignments that will help you learn appropriately.
I am a 29 year old, energetic teacher of almost any instrument, with my main instrument being trumpet. I have my masters in jazz studies from The University of North Texas, near Dallas Texas. I also have been teaching since 2008!
As a performing musician in the DFW area my goal is to help students understand how music works, develop great practice techniques, and create a hobby or profession that will last a lifetime.
*** Lesson Details *** Each lesson is an hour long consisting of several different parts to help students to understand music from several different view points. - First we engage in some guided listening to broaden our perspective of music and learn about the history of music. - Second we work on fundamentals that help us to play music. This is like learning the alphabet before you learn to spell. We don't ski
mp on this part! - Third we work our mind from a theoretical approach to understand the math behind how music works. - Finally we spend the last third of the lesson applying all of this knowledge to a solo, song, or lesson book.
I aim to give you the tools to study the music you want to study!
*** Equipment *** Students should have a stand and their instrument for our first lesson. After the first lesson we will pick a book, song, or solo based on your level. If you need help, I can help you to find an affordable quality instrument.
*** Specialties *** Jazz Improvisation/Performance Classical Trumpet Cover Band (Trumpet) Beginner Trumpet or Piano Theory at all levels. Solo Music Preparation Audition Prep. How to make a band. Music Management (how to manage a band). How to get a gig (any age level).
My son started taking lessons a year ago, Nick used his strengths to help him learn. He has become inspired with the trumpet, and started to play a little every day.
July 8, 2019
I am taking online lessons with Nick, and he has helped me to understand what it is to be a musician. Before I started taking lessons, if someone asked me to play something, I was not able to do it without getting a sheet of music out and struggling A LOT. Now I am starting to be able to play the music I want to play, both by ear and reading. He teaches much more than just playing band music. I wish I could take more than a few lessons this summer.
July 6, 2019
I have a 8 year old daughter and 10 year old son both have been learning Piano for the last 2 years. Nick takes a holistic approach in teaching piano as opposed to sticking with the book. It includes creating a passion about listening different music, learning scales and chords outside of the book. I have recommended Nick to all my friends
Professional performer and teacher for over 20 years. Performed live on radio and TV; major venues coast to coast; for 3 US presidents; DCI group - The Cadets of Bergen County; symphony; brass quintet; big band. Mark is particularly insightful in quickly and accurately diagnosing obstacles and offering effective solutions all while keeping development fun. A symphonic player with high-level marching band experience, Mark has acute insight into the varied needs of today's performers and develops customized paths for embouchure development and maintenance in addition to musical interpretation.
I believe in making music fun while students learn. Beginners through professionals who have a genuine enjoyment through playing will create a life-long enrichment, hobby or profession. Strong fundamentals with solo application help the whole student develop. Whether you are looking for basics, school ensemble support, audition preparation or a come-back plan, musical expression and enjoyment are a personal extension. I look forward to helping all my students remove obstacles to their self-expression.
You’re going to love playing your instrument. I am a brass player, band director, and arranger with over a decade of experience teaching middle school, high school, and college musicians. We’ll strike exactly the right balance of the stuff you’ll love to play and the stuff you’ll need to know. Drop me a line and let’s get you making some great music.
I’m an entertaining and engaging music educator with more than a decade of experience working with students and instrumentalists in middle school, high school, and college. I’m also currently a Middle school music teacher in RI, and I help run summer camp programs for student leaders in high school band programs.
I have had the privilege of teaching piano and trumpet throughout Southeast Wisconsin and Northern Illinois for the past 12 years. In order to maximize convenience for both students and parents, I offer lessons in the comfort of your own home throughout Lake Geneva, Burlington, Elkhorn, Delavan, Genoa City and the surrounding areas. Many of my former students have gone on to become composers, performers and active instructors. Whether instructing piano or trumpet, lessons are always interactive, educational, memorable, and most of all fun!
Once basics are covered we will be able to use a full suite of music software to work on improvisations, blues, jazz and much more!
Hi, there! My name is Doug and I can't wait to meet you! I've been teaching private lessons since 2007 and have loved helping my students learn their chosen instrument! I'm a fun and enthusiastic instructor and my teaching style reflect this. I look forward to helping you reach your goals!
Years of performance experience adds a depth to my teaching and translates into added value for my students. I have performed throughout the Midwest, Tennessee, Florida, and Arizona with the Doug Trio and as a solo artist. Other groups I have performed with include the Oshkosh, Waukesha, Kenosha, Racine, and Lake Geneva Symphony Orchestras, countless pit orchestra
s for a variety of musicals, and more!
Whether instructing piano or trumpet, lessons are always interactive, educational, memorable, and most of all fun!
I've played trumpet since I've been 10 years old. I've grown up playing with and without braces, for weddings, church services, formal marching bands, college tours, and local put orchestras.
I focus on having fun while also aiming to refine technique and tone quality of this amazing instrument.
Teaching for the past 10 years has brought joy fun and experience. I love sharing my passion for reading and literacy with students through a variety of techniques. I love to apply things from now (today's song hits, current events, trends, etc) in to what I'm teaching.
I am a mom of four small boys all under 2nd grade. I love theater, movies, running outdoors, reading, and teaching. I am a positive person who aims to find the GOOD in ALL.
Everyone CAN learn. It's not about being the best... It's about doing your best. You may not know something NOW but you will if you keep your mind to it. The work you put in to something, always pays off.
"Kate came for Sammy's first lesson today and she was lovely. She has a very calm and sweet demeanor and Sammy liked her right away. She took time at the
end of the lesson to discuss what Sammy worked on as well as to make me a list of things to tell the instrument rental place about what is not working well on his trumpet. We are glad to have found Kate and look forward to the next lesson!"
"I can't really say enough good things about Caleb. His resume is an impressive one, but his personality and teaching style are far more impressive because
those are things you can't get from a resume. My ten year old just completed her second session with Caleb and has already shown improvement of which she is super excited about, and can't wait to improve more under Caleb's tutelage."
"Jennings had a terrific first lesson!"
"David was perfect for my son. Patient, flexible and very talented. We will be using him again in the future!"
"Caleb was recommended to me by friends when my son inquired about trumpet lessons to augment the lessons he was receiving at his school. My son is 11 year
s old. Caleb has been instrumental in making my son have a ton more confidence in his trumpet playing skills and has taught my son to become a better player. My son's school band was not a good fit for him so he left, but he insisted on continuing with lessons with Caleb. Now my son is able to take his trumpet experience with his "rock band" shows.
Caleb is patient, well versed in music, and is incredibly talented. We take weekly lessons with Caleb and have been very happy with his teaching style and my son's ability to become a better trumpet player.
I HIGHLY recommend Caleb for trumpet lessons for any age!"
"My name is Dee. I have been a middle school band teacher in the Clarkstown School District for over 20 years. I play trumpet in a local concert band an
d jazz big band each week. I have taken trumpet lessons with Vincent for a year and a half. Through his instruction and encouragement I have made great strides in my technical abilities, range and endurance. I appreciate the well prepared insights and materials he has for me at each lesson, whether it is written material, or "youtube" video insights he has researched and thought helpful. I am very impressed with his musicianship when he models, plays duets, and performs for me. His trumpet performing is wide ranging and always of the highest caliber, whether live, or in recording. As a teacher Vinnie always shows sincerity and humility which puts his students at ease and in a great place to learn."
"James is awesome!"
"Jules is not only an awesome trumpet teacher/player, but he is also an amazing person! He has taught me so much about jazz improvisation and trumpet play
ing in general and I have had a ton of fun along the way due to his friendly and funny personality. I would definitely recommend Jules to any trumpet players looking to improve their playing and learn more about music."
"You will not find a more qualified trumpet instructor in the Asheville area. Michelle brings a wealth of knowledge to the table along with a positive and
encouraging attitude. Michelle is qualified by her BM in trumpet performance from DePaul University and her MM in Instrumental performance and Literature from the renown Eastman School of Music. Students will enjoy taking lessons from her and will excel in their musical studies!"
Whether you play trumpet, trombone, French horn, or any other brass instrument, there are several key factors to improving. Development of tone, technical facility and embouchure are important components. All of these areas will improve if you develop endurance.
The Mechanics of Developing Endurance
Developing endurance is nothing more than developing the ability to play your instrument while maintaining proper technique for an extended period of time. As many beginners know, practicing …
