I tried to teach guitar in the same manner in which I teach every instrument. First I teach students the rudiments of the instrument. Also I teach them how to read and a bit of music theory. From that point I like to follow the students lead. They bring in songs that they would like to learn, or possibly how to play lead guitar, or how to finger pick. At every point I try to point out general aspects of music that need to be learned from the material that they choose.

I've been teaching guitar for the past 15 years. I help students find their unique musical voice through the study of songs and techniques they are interested in. For younger students I also use the Hal Leonard guitar method books to learn music reading. As students advance we switch to William Levitt's Modern method for guitar for jazz students, or Christopher Parkening's classical guitar method for fingerstyle players. Students should be able to play chords to their favorite tunes within 6 weeks. I teach to inspire passion for music. If you love music it makes it fun to practice. When you practice it makes music fun!

Over the past 12 years, we've given over 3,000,000 lessons to happy customers around the world.

I am writing a review from a couple of different perspectives, as I've received lessons from Ryan in a number of capacities. I am an intermediate-level bass player who received his initial music theory training from Ryan, and his explanations were clear and concise.
Recently, I've become a geography professor at the University of Akron, and I teach a variety of topics, including Introductory Cultural Geography. Part of this involves looking at how different types of music spread throughout the world. Ryan created an excellent video that supplemented my lecture; he thoroughly, yet very clearly, described how the spread of the minor pentatonic scale contributed to the development of heavy rock and metal music across the globe. Without this insight, my lecture would have been less accurate, as well as less entertaining to the students!
As a stringed-instrument player and a professor who includes music geography and history in his classes, I highly recommend lessons with Ryan. His descriptions and instructional method are outstanding (please see his excellent video series, "Swing's Shred Tips" on YouTube), and he also clearly demonstrates a deeper knowledge about music. Rather than just playing fast to shred, he will teach the underlying ideas behind the music to improve your playing (as he clearly demonstrated in his custom lecture on geography/history in my class). Highest possible recommendation!"

California, 1962. Few genres are as iconic as surf rock. Somehow the riffy, over-reverbed sound of early 60s pop-rock manages to perfectly evoke a very specific time and place while at the same time remaining timeless and eternally fresh. Addictive hooks, simple but catchy lead lines, and that irresistible tone! What’s not to love? Here are three well-known surf rock songs that are great choices for beginners just starting out on guitar. Each offers a different challenge, and a different s …

First things first: Before you can make it to rock star status, you'll need a guitar or other instrument to practice with. But what's the right model for a beginner? The answer actually depends upon a few basic criteria: 1. What is your budget for a guitar? 2. What is your commitment level to learning to play? 3. Do yo …
