She inhabits a song and involves each member of the audience in its drama, joy or sorrow. There are performers for whom a performance is a night out. When Kathryn performs its a lifetime shared with us in a single evening. If you want to merely hear some tunes, there are many people who will do. Voice
I am an empathetic teacher, sensitive to the student's individual process of learning. My singing lessons usually start with breathing and relaxation exercises. Vocal technique exercises come next. When the student is fully warmed up, we will begin to work on songs. It is important that students be a part of the process of picking material since the more personally they respond to the material the more apt they are to become engaged in their lessons. After three to six months beginning students will have gained an understanding of the fundamentals of breathing, relaxation, and basic performance skills. With more advanced students the focus will be on range extension and the on-going development of vocal style through song interpretation and performance related exercises.
Acting
As an acting teacher and coach, I tailor my classes to the needs of each student. I utilize improvisatory and sensory techniques to help unleash spontaneity. I also encourage the students to use their personal experiences as a way to access a full range of emotions. I enjoy working with the student on script analysis, so as to discover the underlying motivations of the character the student is working on.
Creative and Lyric Writing
I use prompts as a way to get the student writing. Often, I will ask the student to write for stretches of time without editing themselves. It is important to unleash imagination before beginning the process of editing. Many times it is the unexpected that is the most compelling.

I believe that learning how to breath is the key to good singing. After 3 months of study, my students will have learned how to breathe, which improves both their singing and speaking voices. Good breathing is the key to good singing and a healthy voice. With a healthy, well-trained voice, my students can be valuable members of any vocal ensemble, and enjoy their singing, For solo singing, good breathing is most important, whether singing opera, musical theater or pop music, because it gives a beautiful, full quality to the voice.
I always begin a lesson with warm-up exercises, to check breathing and vocal placement. Once the (vocal) engine is warmed-up, then we begin to sing. I try to get to know my students, so that, together, we can choose music that will enable them to reach their goals and is both fun and challenging for them to sing.
In addition to music, I also teach English (ESL), Accent Reduction, German, U.S. & World History. I have my CBEST Credential And ESL Certification. I do private tutoring and teach classes.

I have a MacBook Pro laptop computer + stereo speakers, to provide recorded accompaniment, when necessary.

Mrs. B is a wonderful and dedicated teacher who focuses diligently during class sessions. She thoroughly explains terms and technique and is friendly and sociable. Her extensive knowledge of languages comes extremely useful in Italian arias and other folk songs as to explain the meanings of words and to convey motion. Her classes are enjoyable and fun, while still being comprehensively academic.

Whether you are currently a working musician looking to improve your technique, working towards an audition, or just working up the guts to sing at karaoke, together we can identify and achieve some tangible goals in a way that's fun and relevant to how you want to practice music in the world. I can help you learn to use your body as an instrument and develop a high quality sound. If you struggle with confidence, we can work with and through emotional blocks to help you better connect with your voice and a sense of expression.
About Julie
SINGING AND MUSIC LESSONS: In addition to providing technical training, I believe that singing is about liberation and expression, and have had successes in helping students to find their unique voices through overcoming vocal anxieties. I both work with students who are preparing for auditions and who play in professional bands, and also with students who have only ev
For those in bands: I specialize in harmony and can do consultation sessions with you and/or your band to help with blending, finding harmonies that work for your respective vocal ranges and for the flow of the song, and teaching skills for finding and building harmonies.
MATH: As a middle and high school student, I didn't believe I was "good" at math. It wasn't until I was an adult and was hired as a math tutor - and later promoted to Assistant Director - of a tutoring company that I realized that was a belief that had held me back. Many kids and young adults struggle with confidence around math, and having had experience with that myself I use tools that help meet students where they're at and support them in building enthusiasm for math and confidence in themselves. In addition to providing tangible math skills (I have not only been tutoring Algebra, Geometry, SAT prep, elementary and middle school math for 5 years, but have also helped run a math tutoring company in which I built year-long curricula for grades K-12), I help students feel that math is within their grasp and can be approached with curiosity rather than fear and low self-esteem.

She teaches both of my daughters and is absolutely AMAZING! I have no experience with vocal coaches; but, to me she is worth every penny that we spend! When we come for our lessons, she is always ready with something to offer and incredibly professional. She keeps to our time, to the minute, and gets a lot accomplished in our timeframe.
I have one daughter with significant talent; yet, she always finds something that will enhance her voice. My other daughter has stage fright and will sometimes sort of mumble through her songs. When she applies herself she can even sound good with Colleen’s tutelage. She has even improved their performances during the four auditions a year that my girls have to do for their theater group.
I am very thankful for Colleen and would highly recommend her for vocal lessons. Additionally, I have verbally recommended her to CMT personnel and parents that I interact with. I talk about how amazing she is ALL THE TIME! Any student would do well if given the opportunity to work with her. She gets an EXCELLENT rating in my book.
