I have been teaching guitar since 2005. I personally lean toward rock, blues, jazz, gospel , christian contemporary and pop. I've taught in school districts and churches for 2 years so I've come across many different styles and genres. Many of you have specific goals that will be honored in our lessons but I will tell you from experience that UNDERSTANDING is better than knowing. You will learn concepts that will apply to several genres and even techniques.

I have 4 levels of curriculum. Level 1 is for true beginners that may not even know ANYTHING about guitar. Level 2 is for the person that may know some chords like " G ", " C " , " D " or " Am ", etc. Level 3 is someone who knows all of the " open " chords and has moved on to barre chords but hasn't yet mastered many chord voicing on the fretboard. Also, this individual could be ready to explore the world of guitar improvisation and soloing. Level 4 is an extended study of the above levels. This student could journey deep into ...

We couldn't be happier with Sergei. My 14 year old daughter has had an such a good experience with him over the past year and a half. She progressed well from day one. Plus he is easy going and a great personality for a teenager. I would highly recommend him as a teacher! Thanks Sergei for helping her to have such comfort with the guitar!

I teach all levels of guitar in the areas of rock, blues and jazz, but I really focus more on the musical skills need to play guitar in any style. These include a thorough chord vocabulary, experience playing rhythm guitar, and a complete progressive study of scales and their use in improvisation (lead guitar) starting with pentatonic scales and progressing to major scales, different forms of minor scales and modes. All scales are learned in multiple positions and the student learns to perform with them in any key. In every lesson the student and I play exercises and study materials together to make actual music from the materials being studied.

About Dennis

I have been teaching guitar for 25 years in the Washington DC metro area. I work with students 12 years of age and up, but I am especially experienced at teaching adult students regardless of whether they are beginners or have previous guitar experience. Dennis has been a wonderful guitar teacher and mentor for me over the last 18 months or so. I am in my mid-50s and was starting essentially as a beginner when I signed up to work with Dennis. Thanks to Dennis' patient and individualized approach, I have made great strides and am pleased with how I have progressed. While he is a very accomplished guitarist, he is also a very experienced teacher. Dennis' teaching approach is not to ask the student to follow a rigid learning plan or replicate the journey he took to mastering the guitar, but rather focuses on tailoring the lessons to the student's abilities, musical interests, time constraints, learning modes, etc. The bottom line is that I enjoy working with Dennis each week and practicing what he has taught me.

The pandemic has obviously thrown a big wrench into the giving of guitar lessons. Before, Dennis was teaching me at his house. We now meet online using the Takelessons platform. Online lessons took some getting used to and are clearly not optimal, but I think Dennis has become more and more adept at making it work as well as possible.

I heartily recommend Dennis as a guitar teacher.

Dennis is easygoing and great to work with.

This was my first ever guitar lesson and I thought it was a blast. The instructor took the time to explain best practices and why they were so important. I also really enjoyed seeing the instructor's passion for the guitar and that passion made the whole experience even better!

Had an excellent initial discussion with my instructor, Edwin, today. It was big picture but at the same time Edwin’s comments & suggestions gave me confidence in his command of the art (engineering, arrangement, composition & structure, and playing techniques), all the things I’m going to need help with to take my musical projects to another level.

Edwin is chill, flexible, and conveys a ton of relevant practice tips every lesson.

I've had 4 lessons with Edwin so far and have already made a lot of good progress, by learning songs and theory and strumming patterns and fingerpicking. Edwin has a genuine interest in my improvement.

"Though I was only able to take lessons with Jason for a couple months due to an unexpected move, I was able to learn a lot from him. I came in with very little guitar experience and no background in music. His lessons are very accommodating and I felt I walked away a little bit better every time. Jason is a great guy and it is easy to share your goals and ideas for the future with him. When working with Jason it felt like a team effort in order to help me reach my goals. In the short time I took lessons with Jason I learned a lot about the guitar and I am excited to build upon the music career he helped me to start. A definite Recommendation."
