I enjoy teaching acoustic guitar since I have an affinity for playing and writing on the acoustic guitar.
Fingerpicking in the style of the Beatles and Fleetwood Mac are good ways to learn "travis picking".
The acoustic guitar can also be strummed with a pick the way an electric guitar is played.
In addition to basic acoustic guitar some students opt to learn more complex fingerstyle through classical guitar. One of my favorites I like to teach include 20 simple etudes by Cuban guitarist Leo Brouwer.
His compostions are harmonically similar to rock music and have been played by guitar luminaries such as Randy Rhoades (Ozzy Osbourne).

About Brian
I have been playing guitar for over 30 years and teaching for 25 years.
I've been featured in Guitar Player magazine (see attached pic). and my live experience includes concerts and tours with various bands (Champagne Francis, Scout), theater (Jersey Boys, Movin' Out, Josh Gad (Book of Mormon) and TV performances (Jay Leno, The Today Show).
I enjoy teaching both children and adults. I recommend children under 10 start on a fender squire mini electric guitar ($99)
For adults,
I am able to bring beginner and intermediate guitarists to an advanced level of playing and understanding songwriting, soloing and playing songs with good technique.

I look forward to hearing from you and helping you along your path of learning music and guitar.
Thanks!

*** Lesson Details ***
Each lessons builds upon the previous. The first half of the
lesson is a review of material the student has covered; a "warm up"
The second half of the lesson is for learning a new song or guitar solo as well as chord theory (learning and understanding new songs / songwriting) and scale theory (learning and understanding how melodies and solos fit over chord progressions).
I recommend setting a baseline intention of practicing 15 minutes a day. If you stick to that every day you will improve on the guitar and be playing music very soon!

About Joshua
My love of music began early on from the time I was a child. My parents' wide appreciation of different music genres was reflected in all the varied albums which landed on their constantly rotating turntable. It wasn't long before I started taking piano lessons as my first introduction to creating music. By the time I was 15, I realized that I had a greater attraction to the guitar. I then began a journey that has lasted around 26 years to date. Most of my knowledge consists of a combination of self study, college courses and many excellent teachers along the way. I took several courses at San Francisco Community College to become acquainted with music fundamentals, theory and harmony. I was able to study with noted players such as Jim Campilongo (Nora Jones), Reeves Gabrels (David Bowie, Nine Inch Nails), Audley Freed (Black Crowes,
Dixie Chicks), Jorma Kaukonen (Jefferson Airplane, Hot Tuna), Warren Haynes (Gov't Mule, Allman Brothers), Richard Thompson, Martin Simpson, Larry Campbell (Bob Dylan, Levon Helm,Phil Lesh), and San Francisco Jazz Guitarist Jeff Massanari. Not long after moving to Nashville, I took an instructor position at The Main Stage, a music and dance school located in Springfield, TN. I taught a wide range of children (ages 5-17) and adults there for several years.
I bring years of experience and study when I meet with students to formulate a specific, tailored program to help them get started playing as quickly as possible. I think it's important to not only learn theory and technique but also to learn the songs that attract one to the instrument in the first place. Additionally, I've learned many different styles of guitar (both acoustic and electric) ranging from rock and metal to country, folk, bluegrass and funk. I can help a student decipher the techniques behind many of the popular riffs and licks that catch their ear.

*** Lesson Details ***
When I meet new students for the first time, I make it a point to ask them about their own musical interests and goals. I like to find out what inspires them to want to play guitar. I combine teaching important fundamentals with their interests (say, learning their favorite song). We set manageable goal posts for each week so a student can witness their progress. From there, we will work towards achieving the next goal until the task is complete and they can see the payoff (and so can their family and friends).
I always use an approach which combines patience and lots of encouragement. Generally speaking, I have a very laid back personality but I am firm about meeting the requirements that are set with each lesson. Daily practice is important if there is going to be progress. Students can expect to be playing some of their favorite songs quickly when they put in the time.
I use method books which differ depending on the age and interests of the student. I combine exercises which acquaint a student with theory and reading along with learning one's favorite songs. After 3 months, a student will be able to know enough open position chords to play many of these songs. After 6 months, a student will be able to grasp basic music fundamentals and attain basic level reading skills.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Living room or den/music room w/ guitar, amp, cables, and seating for parents in both locations

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can provide a guitar, amp, music stand and cable though I would strongly recommend to the student they purchase their own for practical purposes.

*** Specialties ***
I teach rock, funk, country and blues electric styles. I also teach fingerpicking and flatpicking acoustic styles.

Re: Recommendation for Josh P.

Dear Music Enthusiasts,

I was initially impressed with Josh P. personality, patience, and kind demeanor when we hired him 8 years ago for guitar lessons for my then 5 year-old. Yes, I said 5. After checking numerous places for a music instructor interested in teaching such a young child (and being told no), we almost gave up our search. We were referred to Josh who sat down with us and told us he would be glad to teach my young child with only a few conditions. He must be able to recognize the alphabet and pay attention for the weekly half-hour lessons. My husband and I can truly say it was one of the best decisions we ever made.

Did my 5 year-old make it to the magical 30 minute mark each week without incident? Probably not. Some weeks' lessons would end at the 25 minute mark with a tired and talkative child. The next week, however, the half hour lesson would mysteriously lengthen into 40 minutes if he saw that he had my son's full attention. In retrospect, the patience he displays for his students, at any level or skill, is remarkable.

Josh is reliable, dedicated, and eternally upbeat. My 5 year old was reading music in two years and tuning his own guitar by ear shortly thereafter. He is now 13 and has been the 1st chair of our statewide jazz guitar honor band several years running. Josh instilled in him the importance of daily practice and I would often hear him gently chiding my son if he thought the time had not been put in that week. Josh's dedication rubs off on his students. His love of music rubs off on his students.

Josh has come to our home the past several years and taught both of our sons guitar lessons. They both play wonderfully, but most importantly, he has taught them to love music.....any type of music. He might have come in one day with a Beatles CD and tell them to download it to their iPod. The next week it might be Jimmy Hendrix. Both my sons love every genre of music and I attribute that solely to Josh. He is an excellent music teacher and has my highest recommendation. I am happy to furnish more details if you would like additional information.

Sincerely,

Cassie Webb

I teach young children using fun songs, games and classical guitar technique. I also teach adults and specialize in contemporary guitar as well as folk genres of Latin America. I emphasize good posture, tone and musicality, and always a high level of enjoyment with the process!

About ELENA
Hello!
Music is my life and my biggest passion. I've been a working musician and a teacher for several years and there's nothing more rewarding than sharing all I've learned so far with my students, to nurture their goals and aspirations and to make them aware of the great instrument they already possess. Every year I plan and host two wonderful recitals for my students, so that they can experience and share their progress with family and friends.

Here's more about me and my education:
I was born and raised in Italy and have been singing since I was a child but started a formal training during my teenage years with a private coach. During college, while studying Psychology at the University of Florence, I attended 2 different private music schools in Florence and Bologna, since it was not possible at the time to study music in Colleg
e. There I kept studying vocal technique, solfege, classical guitar and music harmony.
I moved to LA 11 years ago and attended Musician's Institute earning a diploma in Vocal Studies and Vocal Performance and then I attended a Composition & Songwriting Program at UCLA for 2 years. I refined my vocal technique studying at Berkley College of Music for a summertime in a special program for Jazz Vocalists and I have been an Alexander Technique's student for now 10+ years.
I am a performing artist, I sing and teach privately for a living and, on the side, I help an Opera Touring company promote their tours. I have performed all over the country in some beautiful venues such as the Getty Center and Pantages Theater to name a few. Guitar is my second instrument but I accompany students with my piano during vocal exercises. My personal style of singing is modern, not operatic, I love many kinds of music but especially pop, jazz, and musical theater.

***Lessons Details***

**Singing: Teaching Adults**
There are two sides of singing that I like to work on with my students.
The first is vocal technique, which is first and foremost the study of how to use our instrument, our whole body, in the best and most useful way to avoid strain ad create beautiful sounds. I believe that when we relax and use the right posture, meaning the most natural one, then our bodies and our breathing mechanisms act as they are supposed to, and singing magically happens at its best. When we learn to use our bodies without strain, the right "singing" muscles are automatically engaged and exercised and we feel at ease. So I try to encourage a non-forceful way to use diaphragmatic breathing, which I have learned by studying Alexander Technique, which is a technique that teaches people how to stop using unnecessary levels of muscular and mental tension during any activity, especially during an artistic performance of any kind.
I try to notice bad singing habits the student may have formed throughout his/her life, (hopefully none!), and gently help them correct them. The vocal exercises I use are drawn from the Bel Canto tradition, a classical tradition, but I mix them with more modern vocal exercises to develop popular techniques like "belting" for example.
The second side of singing is simply to pay attention to song interpretation, to convey the message we would like to convey. I encourage the student to choose songs to work on they truly love, and I welcome any style of music. I give the students vocal exercises CDs to help them practice at home.

**Singing: Teaching Children**
What I described above is also true for teaching children, however I like to teach them "by ear" with simple vocal exercises and vocal games at the beginning of the lesson and try to ease them into the sound they naturally make. I like to create a positive environment in which the student can feel successful about even small achievements, whether it is standing in a relaxed way or having practiced the beginning of an exercise or part of a song. To help the student practice at home and keep the motivation alive without feeling overwhelmed I record each lesson (or let them record it) and give them the accompaniment for the song of their choice so they can have fun at home.

*** GUITAR ***
I teach young children using fun songs, games and classical guitar technique. I also teach adults and specialize in contemporary guitar. I welcome many styles of music, pop, rock as well as folk genres of Latin America. I emphasize good posture, tone and musicality, and always a high level of enjoyment with the process!

*** RECITALS ***
I plan and host 2 wonderful Recitals a year, one in January and one in June. I encourage all my students to participate, no matter how they may feel about their instrument level and preparation. Working towards a performance is one of the most effective ways to solidify your ever growing skill!

*** Studio Equipment ***
For students who come to my home studio, there is private guest parking right outside my building, in a gated complex of buildings and in a safe neighborhood just north of the 101. My studio is conveniently located just a few blocks from the freeway entrance. I have a comfortable sofa for parents and siblings to attend the lessons and a keyboard to use for accompaniment. Also, I periodically offer my students the chance to record one song in my studio, equipped with nice microphones and a professional recording system.

*** Travel Equipment ***
For singing lessons I bring my small and light master-keyboard and laptop or I can use the student piano/keyboard. For children's lesson I ask my students to bring a notebook to keep track of practice assignments.

*** Specialties ***
Music theory and Songwriting. Stage performance and how to feel comfortable on stage. Additionally I teach vocal jazz improvisation, Broadway singing and Italian song repertoire.

The acoustic guitar is a go-to instrument of choice for songwriting, even for top electronic music artists. I can show you the basics of rhythm, chords progressions, and useful tips to inspire you to write your own songs whether pop, folk, alternative, filmic, or simply how to play it for fun and relaxation. Nylon or steel string is up to you -- the approach remains the same, and once you learn my techniques, you can apply them to many other string instruments as well. Ready to have some fun?

I really appreciate Mark's teaching ability. He breathes music and make it easy to understand. I wasn't expecting to make that much progress or to have that depth of knowledge of music or my instrument in only 5 lessons. He gives a lot and he is eager to respond to my questions. I recommend Mark as a accordion teacher.

Russ is a truly exceptional individual and very knowledgeable in all aspects of music theory, production and the industry. Not only is he an great at what he does, but he can also relate and impart that knowledge onto others - a skill that is surprisingly rare among high-caliber performers. The price per lesson seems higher than average at first glance, but I feel that the speed and amount of knowledge you acquire per dollar is actually lower than that of other instructors. Really.

He is also active in the industry, so the skills he teaches are current.

I take lessons with Russ online through Skype for EDM production in FL Studio. He is always punctual and promptly communicates if anything comes up. His teaching style carefully balances the need to provide guidance, while allowing freedom for individual artistic development. Every week, I start a composition or track analysis project that applies what I've learned in previous lessons, and I will submit it to Russ to discuss things that went well and things to work on in the future. In this way, you are not just being lectured, but you are actually learning to collaborate with an exceptional musician. I've personally experienced how constant application and feedback facilitates rapid learning.

He certainly is a serious musician, but that doesn't mean he doesn't have a fun personality. He is engaging and inspirational.

I would, without reservation nor hesitation, highly recommend Russ to anyone who is interested in professional music production.

I really enjoy learning from Russ. He is good at relating things back to a way I can understand and improve. He is so versatile in his music knowledge that I can litterally throw anything his way that I'm curious about and he points me in the right direction. I've taken guitar, bass, vocal, and even production lessons from Russ. By far the most value I have ever got from an instructor. At first I was a little hesitant because of the higher price than others, but when you start noticing that you are learning stuff other teachers had no idea about, it makes sense to pay a little more for the quality you get out of his lessons. Thanks Russ for all the lessons over the last few years! Wouldn't be where I am today without ya!

I want to have you walking out of the lesson happy, and excited to go home and practice some new material. With me you'll learn about guitar, but you'll also learn about music and how playing can help you in life (perseverance, basic math foundations, etc.)

About Chris
I am a jazz guitarist based out of beautiful Los Angeles, California. I received and Associate of Arts degree in Music in 2015, and have been pursuing a bachelors in Jazz Studies since then.

While in community college I really grew into my own as a musician and discovered that I love jazz. Not only the music, but the history of how it formed as well as the differences from classical music. When at school I stood out from the other guitarists because I was hungry to learn and that attitude will hopefully follow me for the rest of my life.

Thats what I'd hope to pass on the students; that knowledge, be it music, english, math, physiology, etc. is the key to everything. And that it doesn't have to be all stuffy and boring! I tailor my lessons to the student wether its guitar, piano, ukulele, etc. and my main objective is to learn and have
fun, so the learning is reinforced with good natured thoughts. This will set up the student to actually want to practice!

As a musician I've been in a couple of groups, and starting to get a jazz group together recently. I also try to utilize the computer to produce when possible so I can learn about that aspect of music. My passion is improvisation/composition, because I hope to one day leave songs behind that people can play forever and be influenced by them like so many have influenced me.

And Christopher always comes out after the lesson and gives me a little update which matters to me as a mom. I also appreciate how he doesn't just boot him out the door at the end of the lesson. I started playing when I was 13 and i’ve never taken a lesson. I am completely self taught, so lessons with me are more relaxed and fun. I want my students to love playing guitar more and more with each lesson. I never want my students to feel like playing their guitar is mandatory but rather something that they just want to do because they love it so much.

About Sam
Hey!! So I guess the first thing you should know about me is that I am a crazy big music lover. I listen and play music all day, every day. Music has just been a huge part of my life since I was a kid. I’ve sang since I was little, started playing the drums when I was about 10, and bought my first guitar when I was 13 and fell in love with it. Right now, I make music and work as a background actor on tv shows n such. I’m hoping that I can one day go to college for music, but i’ve gotta save up money first!! So these lessons will help me to do exactly that! Teaching is also something that i’ve always had a passion for. I looked up to my teachers growing up and especially looked up to my choir teacher and vocal coach in high school. They both kind of pushed me to get on here and start teaching myself. I just hope that through this I can he
lp other people expand their knowledge and love in music.
