I've been teaching cello for 10 years and my students have gone on to participate in All-State orchestra, and play in professional orchestras. Within the first few lessons, you'll be able to produce sound and play simple songs and as time goes on you'll be able to read music fluently and perform with ease. I specialize in Classical, and typically use Suzuki and Klengal scale books. I love working with students of all ages and experience levels and I can't wait to meet you!

About Byron

I love music. I love it so much that I have made it my career. I have been playing the cello for over 20 years and have studied in universities since 2002. In that time, I have worked extensively with great artists such as, Rhonda Rider, Joel Krosnick, Andy Mark, Nicholas Tzavares, and Mark Steinbe

Byron is incredible. He is so inspirational to watch, and yet he makes his skill feel achievable. He is the most accommodating and encouraging instructor I have ever had, but still pushes me to improve. I feel like I am recieving a world class education, despite the more casual goals I have for my music. Couldn't be happier!

I'm an adult and I've been working with Byron for 5 months now. We've worked in person and now through video during quarantine. It's been a great experience and I would surely recommend him!

I had no experience with string instruments and feel I'm on my way to playing the cello competently. Byron keeps things fun and moving along at a good pace. He's especially good at diagnosing the cause of any difficulties I'm having.
Sheila
Excellent for someone new to the instrument.

Kyle is a great piano teacher! He is very patient with my 12-year old son. Just yesterday he referred to him as “fun Kyle” because he teaches him small songs on the side that he can show friends and family or are for upcoming holidays. He’s always punctual and respectful of our family and home. I’m grateful to have found him!

Online Cello Teacher

Hello! My name is Emma Cary and I recently completed my sophomore year as a cello performance major at the University of Michigan, where I study with Prof. Richard Aaron. I have been studying the cello for 14 years, and previously taught weekly private cello lessons to kids ages 6-15 for around 3 years during high school. I have plenty of experience teaching beginners, but I am also willing to teach musicians of any level!

I will be available for in-person lessons at the Moore Building on campus since I will be staying in Ann Arbor until mid-June, and I will return in late August. I am also willing to teach online lessons via Skype. I am fully vaccinated, but I still would like to social distance and wear a mask if we decide to meet in person.

I would prefer if you send me an email at ecary@umich.edu to set up a lesson time instead of doing so through this website. TakeLessons charges extra fees, but if we use another payment method, (Zelle, Venmo, etc.) your money won't go to ...

About Emma

Emma Cary, 19, is a rising junior at the University of Michigan where she studies cello performance with Richard Aaron. She began cello lessons at 6 years old with her father, Neal Cary, and continued lessons with him for 12 years. Other influential teachers include Julian Schwarz, who she studied

I love sharing my passion for music with all of my students - ages 5 through 72.

You can always recognize a skilled cellist. The music sounds smooth and graceful, the tone quality is lovely. Unskilled cellists just don’t sound the same. What’s the difference? Skill of course. The skill to play a very large instrument with relaxed hands and arms by using your core muscles to transfer your body weight through your arms and hands into the cello. Not every cello teacher knows how to teach that.

I believe that my unique combined musical and medical background makes me a better cello teacher. In addition to my graduate and undergraduate musical training and extensive musical experience, My knowledge of human anatomy and mechanics of how the body works can help you develop habits that will lead to the beautiful singing tone that’s makes the cello a favorite.

We will then build on those habits to develop good intonation, a lovely vibrato and a variety of bowing techniques ...

The cello isn't a particularly easy instrument to learn, but I will say that it is SO worth it. It takes work, but what doesn't? Cello is my passion, and I hope I can help it become yours.

About Leah

I have been learning music since I was 6 years old. It was a requirement in our house, but, nonetheless, growing up in a house of musician siblings had me excited to get started. With 13 siblings, you can imagine that our house was always full of some kind of music. Having grown up in that world

"I've had other instrumental teachers before (piano, trombone, cello, and voice (voice is another story)) and Michael is probably the best instructor I've ever had. Even when I don't have the time or ability to practice as much as I should he just encourages and makes me feel good about the work I did do. He explains things very clearly, really knows what he's talking about (which for the cello is really important and not as common as you'd think), and just makes our lessons enjoyable. I'm only a beginner but I already have so much more confidence in what I understand about the instrument in my hands. It's kind of awesome."

"I'm very grateful to have found a teacher as generous as Chris. Since reviewing is so important in our culture anymore, I always like to get a good sampling before constructing a review. Chris shows consistently that he listens to his students, offers positive critique, and molds his approach to meet the student where they are. Chris makes it easy, fun and relaxing to learn. It isn't hard to gather that Chris is a professional and experienced teacher. I am a very beginner, adult student, and I can appreciate how Chris can teach a spectrum of students at different skill and experience levels. Thanks to Chris for making my hobby to learn an instrument such a dream!"

Is There Such Thing as a Left-Handed Cello? How to Play as a Leftie

Handedness is the sense that one hand is more dexterous or coordinated compared to the other. Researchers usually determine an individual’s handedness by observing which hand is used to write or eat. Although the causes of handedness are not fully understood, about 10% of the population is left handed or ambidextrous according to Dr. M.K. Holder, a researcher and specialist on handedness. Many left handed students wonder if they will need a specialized instrument in order to learn to play …

Cello Thumb Position: Where to Place Your Fingers & Hands

Cello thumb position is one of the big leaps of technique for advancing cellists and is one of the skills that sets more advanced students from the intermediate. This new technique opens up the higher ranges of the instrument and allows us to play more advanced solos and etudes. This technique is not something you should rush into though! Make sure to take things slowly at first and master the basic concepts before moving on.  When Should You Focus on Your Cello Thumb Position? There have to …

What are the Hardest Cello Pieces? How to Get from Beginner to Advanced Player

As a beginner I often told myself I would know I am a really great cellist when I could play Rimsky-Korsakov’s Flight of the Bumblebee at full speed. To my young ears, this simply had to be one of the hardest cello pieces with its high range, chromaticism, and famously fast tempo. As my musical career continued I worked on these and other skills to reach a point I could begin learning the piece confidently, and it was only a matter of time before I achieved my goal. Of course, this wasn’ …
