I have been teaching since 2011 and have my Master's of Music in vocal performance from San Francisco Conservatory of Music, with a Bachelor in Music Vocal performance from University of California Irvine. I specialize in teaching classical art song and opera, but am also passionate about teaching the musical theater repertoire and popular genres. My goal is to inspire students to explore the sound and meaning of the music beyond the written page. I believe deeper understandings give way to stronger and more professional performances. I work closely with students to help them develop strong basics and a concrete foundation, giving them the tools to achieve their goals in music.

My goal is to inspire students to explore the sound and meaning of the music beyond the written page. I believe deeper understandings give way to stronger and more professional performances. I work closely with students to help them develop strong basics and a concrete foundation in voice or piano, through fun and interactive music and games. Having performed with the Orange County Pacific Symphony, I am able to provide students with professional performance perspectives from performing in
small venues to 3,000 seat performance halls.

*** Lesson Details ***
I encourage students to learn and work on music they are passionate about. I expect students to practice regularly to the best of their ability. I am patient and tailor each lesson to the student’s skill and comprehension level. I work with students to help them establish good practicing habits.
To me it is most important that the student is having fun while learning; therefore, as a part of regular instruction time we play games to learn and review material, skills, and performance techniques.
After 3-6 months of lessons students will be familiar with musical terminology, be able to identify musical symbols and read music, at least, at an elementary level. They will also be introduced to the basics of performance.

*** Studio Equipment ***
No studio at this time. I am happy to teach in home

*** Travel Equipment ***
I expect the student to provide enthusiasm and dedication

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in teaching classical art song and opera, but also enjoy teaching the musical theater repertoire and popular genres.

Learn to sing on your breath. This is the basis for a good singing technique and to be able to extend your range. We'll work on vocal technique so you'll develop great habits and muscle memory. We'll also work on musicality and expression through songs and arias. Find your voice! Singing should be effortless.

About Carol
I have taught voice for over twenty years. I studied music at University of California, Santa Barbara, where I received my B.A. I currently work as a professional singer for various local opera companies, music theater groups, churches and temples. I am principal soprano for Opera A La Carte and have also soloed with Repertory Opera Company, Redlands Bowl Festival, Laguna Beach Chorale and Celestial Opera Company. I have worked extensively in Los Angeles schools performing musical assemblies for students in elementary and middle grades through Southland Opera, LA Opera and Guild Opera of Southern California. My teaching experience includes private voice lessons and master classes at Idyllwild School for the Arts.

*** Lesson Details ***
I emphasize breathing techniques to free up the voice to expand your range and ease of singing. In
the lesson, we start with simple warm ups and vocalizes and then apply techniques to the songs you want to sing. I realize each student is different and I customize the lesson to the student's particular needs. I specialize in classical and music theater, however the basics of singing apply to all styles of music. In addition to working on breathing and technique for singing, we'll also focus on interpretation of the songs you are working on as well as how to overcome performance nervousness. Most students find that they are able to sing with more freedom, less tension and will have more confidence as they progress.

I also teach beginning piano, using the John W. Schaum series.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Lessons in the main room, upright piano

*** Travel Equipment ***
They need to provide a piano or keyboard if I am going to their home.
I have a piano in my home.

*** Specialties ***
I work on using the breath as a fundamental technique for singing. Singing should never hurt. I use a lot of imagery to achieve freedom in singing.

Stephanie is always kind, always supportive, always encouraging, and most importantly, she always knows exactly how to challenge me. I've been taking lessons from her for over two years now. Since the first lesson, my range has expanded and I've grown more confident in my ability--especially in trying out new styles/genres. It's an added bonus that she's flexible with my busy and ever-changing schedule! I would highly recommend her to students of all levels.

Classical vocal technique with a contemporary application. A solid classical vocal foundation crosses over into any style of music you wish to sing. I am a classically trained opera singer (UCLA: BA Vocal Performance, Graduate Studies: École Normale de Musique de Paris) who performs in both classical (opera and choral) and non-classical musical settings (musical theater, jazz, and pop).

About Taj
Hello! My name is Taj, and I am a classically trained singer and voice teacher based in Los Angeles. I received my BA in Vocal Performance from UCLA in 2014 while studying under internationally renowned opera star, Vladimir Chernov. I continued my graduate studies at École Normale de Musique de Paris under Maestro Chernov's wife and personal voice teacher, Olga Toporkova.

I believe in establishing a solid technical foundation based in classical singing technique. The technique I teach comes from the Russian school of Bel Canto (beautiful singing in Italian). By gaining control of your voice through breath control and precise vocal placement, anything is possible! A solid technical foundation will assure the longevity of your voice and its application crosses over into any genre of music you sing.

As a singer, I have performed in a
wide variety of contexts ranging from opera, choral, musical theater, jazz, and R&B/pop. I have over 15 years of experience performing, and over 5 years of experience teaching voice. My diverse array of artistic experiences allows me to be flexible and sensitive to the specific needs of my students.

Singing is ultimately a form of artistic expression and release. The end goal of all the technical training is to create an artistic moment for both you and the audience. When you begin the journey of discovering your own unique voice, you will also begin a deeper journey with yourself. Singing has brought me so much joy in my own life and I look forward to sharing that joy with you!
