Fretboard knowledge and principles

About Randall
My love of music and musical talent was discovered when I was just five years old. An uncle gave me a plastic recorder and, without lessons or help from anyone, I was playing melodies within days. Soon after I started taking private lessons on Saxophone and Clarinet.
I played my first paying job at age 14.
When I was 15, my private instructor, asked me if I would be interested in teaching. He put me on the County list of private instructors and and soon I had my own thriving studio of Sax and Clarinet students. From that time on, I have almost continuously been involved in music education.
Though I had listened to the rock "guitar gods" of the 60's I never became interested the guitar until, at the age of 15, I first heard Maestro Andres Segovia through his televised master classes. About the same time, I was amazed by the chord
melody genius of jazz artists like George Van Eps, Joe Pass, and Bucky Pizzarelli. It was then I realized that the guitar could be an "orchestra."
In the small town where I grew up, there were no guitar teachers so I studied with outstanding Guitarist Ed McGuire. Later, I studied formally with several renowned professors of guitar, including Bruce Holzman at FSU and Randy Reed, a professor at Duke University in Durham North Carolina.
I have also performed in Master Classes for Classical Guitarists Atigoni Goni and Dimitri Diatchenko.
Before making North Florida my home, I toured and played throughout the Northeast, Midwest and Southeast in a variety of venues and styles from Rock to Jazz to R&B.
Even after settling down I have stayed active in the music business, playing and teaching. I continue to work regularly performing solo, or in ensembles throughout Florida from Tallahassee to Jacksonville.

*** Lesson Details ***
I am a laid back teacher who prefers to motivate my students by instilling my love of, and enthusiasm for, music in them rather than using any kind of "scare" tactics. I had a very few "knuckle rapper" style teachers over the years and found them to be very unmotivating.
A large percentage of the progress a student makes happens between the lessons. The more they practice, the faster they improve.
I also believe in building a solid foundation that my students can build upon. A good teacher teaches a student how to teach themselves.
On guitar, I encourage, but don't insist on, my students learning to read music. Some styles of guitar do not require it, but I do mention the gigs I have gotten over the years because I could read.
On all instruments, I am a big believer in great technique, musicianship and improvisational skills.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Studio is in back of the house as an addition. It has its own separate entrance and is approx 160 sq feet. Well lit and with heat and air.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I will provide a music stand if needed. Students must have their own instrument. They will need to get their own books, though I do provide much supplemental material.

*** Specialties ***
Jazz, Classical, Blues, Flamenco

Funk, slap, walking, in-the-pocket. All strange terms that you'll need to know. Let me show you how to put down the foundation to most musical styles from rock to r&b or even metal!

About Ian
I’ve been teaching professionally to all ages and levels for over 10 years throughout the Chicagoland area. I have been playing for about 19 years. Music is my passion. I even own and run an all ages music venue. Teaching is my biggest love and I love seeing students learn! There isn’t a style I will not teach. All music to me is fascinating:)

*** Lesson Details ***
All lessons start with the basics (assuming the student doesn’t already know them). This includes: reading music and chord diagrams (usually using a book for students under the age of 15), understanding rhythm, basic music theory, etc. Meanwhile, we apply this knowledge to songs of the student’s choice- this way they’re learning songs they like, and more about guitar and music at the same time. As time goes on we’ll get into playing lead, advanced theory, songwriting and more
.

Above is the plan, but I am always open to suggestions from the students. As long as they are learning, I am happy. In all reality, we can spend years on just one of the many paths you can go down with the guitar- so I am always continually re-checking on the student’s current and up-to-date goals.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Electric guitar, acoustic guitar, amp and cables, notebook paper, metronome, pens and pencils. All I need from students is that they have their own guitar, picks, and in time, a metronome (and as mentioned above, sometimes a book, but I'll let you know if and when that might be necessary).

*** Travel Equipment ***
Depending on what's necessary, I will bring any of my studio equipment except for an amp.

*** Specialties ***
Again, I am very confident in my teaching skills. I love so many genres of music that its hard to say where my best talents lie. But no matter what the style, I will say one thing that I have always been strict about is proper technique and rhythm. I feel like timing is something that a lot of musicians lack and often have to learn the hard way later on. I try to incorporate it soon after and onward after a beginner's first lessons.

great teacher for popular acoustic guitar

Ian is a no nonsense well organized guy. He taught me using exercises he wrote out on paper mostly in tabulature form. He used a metronome from the first lesson and always introduced a music theory concept such as rhythm, pentatonic scales, and chord transposition. He will not move past any exercise until you can demonstrate proficiency so there is no choice but to draw your own conclusion that you need to practice more if you want to progress. He teaches out of his local all ages music venue, or will travel to your home.

A great experience.

As an adult, beginner student I have nothing but good things to say about Ian. He has a very good demeanor during class and takes the time to find out what styles you are interested in.

He has the patience and communication skills that are found in superior instructors (I have been to a couple others and have stuck with Ian). His passion for music is infectious.

He challenges me to become better with each week and is good at instilling a sense of competition. I highly recommend him as an instructor.

I have played bass guitar for around 14 years and am always learning new things. I cater to student interests while making sure techniques are learned. You will learn how to read music, all notes on the fret board, and theory applications.

About Matthew
I started playing trumpet in grade school and was in the marching band the first year of high school. I then switched to playing upright bass in the orchestra. This led to me being a part of the jazz band and playing instrumentals for school musicals. Upon graduation time, I received the gold medal for music performance in strings. I was also an AP music theory student. After, I pursued a bachelor's degree in music and took education courses. I have tutored music theory and given instrument lessons, but they were always self employed or from the university.

I wish to help others make music an enjoying part of their lives, as it is in mine.

*** Lesson Details ***
For lessons, I like to get a feel of the student's current abilities and then start from there. I'm progressive in my methods and use a scaffolding technique. Going out of
your comfort zone helps learning and development.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Fender Jazz Bass
Music Man SUB Bass
Ampeg amp

*** Travel Equipment ***
Students should have a logbook or notebook, staff paper, pencils, their instruments if applicable, and a metronome.

I bring extra staff paper and pencils just in case

I just finished a series of online upright bass lessons with Dr. Norman. It's wonderful to have a lesson without toting the bass around town. Dr. Norman is impressive in skill and knowledge. There was nothing musically he didn't know, couldn't explain, or demonstrate on the bass. He has a keyboard at hand to play chords or emphasize a particular key, and he is proficient on that too. Dr. Norman is A++.

The electric bass is the foundation of any band. But, it is in no way limited by this role. Just within the traditional role of a electric bass player, a world of nuance exists that adds character and interest to any group. Beyond that, innovative new approaches to playing have emerged and exciting new possibilities for the instrument have made becoming an electric bass player more enticing than ever. In lessons, I help the student to realize what it is to be a bass player, and how building on past masters and current innovators can be liberating and informing. I aim to help my students appreciate the joys of playing electric bass as well as ensure that they will be an asset to any group they decide to join.

About Eli
One of the great things about being a bassist is that you can play with a lot of different groups. From jazz combos and rock bands, to bluegrass bands and string quintets, the bass can be an integral part of each. For me, learning and playing many different types of music has added to the joy of being a bass player. Through teaching and performing, I hope to share my enthusiasm for the instrument.

I have had the benefit of working with great teachers throughout my bass playing career, including members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Chicago Lyric Opera, and the Chicago Jazz Ensemble. Because of this, I understand what a difference the right teacher can make. Furthermore, I know what teaching styles and techniques work best for me as a current student, so I am able to relate, and tailor the lesson to fit the student's needs.

If you are looking for an excellent bass teacher, look no further. You would be wasting your time. I've had a number of music instructors over the years, and I can easily say that Eli ranks at or near the top of that list.

Eli knew exactly where to start with me... he truly has an amazing ability to gauge where the student's level of knowledge is, and tailor the lesson exactly to that. Within a few lessons, I had improved my form tremendously. We covered everything that I wanted to learn, and wasted no time on things that I already knew.

What's more, a few of the instructors I have had in the past came off as a bit elitist and snobby. Eli is one of the most genuine guys around. He'll guide the lesson at your own pace, always willing to pause and show you something a second, third, or fourth time... At no point do you ever feel like you are going to ask a dumb question. This is a crucial trait of a good instructor, and Eli definitely has that going for him.

He is also quite accommodating. We typically do Skype lessons, but one there was one time that his room mate had made a slight miscalculation in the internet bill, which resulted in no internet that day. Rather than let that stop him, he actually brought his bass and amplifier on the bus, and came to my apartment to give me the lesson in person. He will make sure you get your lesson, one way or another.

My only regret is that I don't have a 6th star to give the guy! I definitely recommend him to anyone looking to learn how to play the bass guitar.

Learn to read music for bass guitar, play your favorite bass lines and make your own music on the electric bass. I like playing funk, jazz, rock, pop and Motown. My favorite players are Jack Pastorious, Pino Palladino, James P Jameson and John Paul Jones. Pain free playing, good tone, dexterity in the fingers, great time and learning style appropriate techniques (slapping, double thumbing, fingerpicking, harmonics etc.) are what my bass lessons are about.

About Henry
I perform and teach guitar professionally. Music is my passion and I love to learn new music and help others learn it as well. I currently specialize in teaching classical guitar with a focus on building strong technique, ear training, and practical applications for using formal and contemporary music analysis skills.

I also love playing jazz and various styles of pop music. I try to bring a similar approach to teaching these as I do in my classical teaching. I want to work on answering questions the music asks of the performer; like how would you play a Country Swing song versus a Jazz Swing song, how would you approach a contemporary Spanish Guitar Suite versus a Baroque Guitar Suite, or how would you play a Taylor Swift song versus a John Mayer song.

Electric "Fender" bass

About Darrell
Why these lessons are different:
- Formally trained conductor/composer/producer
- Individual or group session options including full band production
- A long roster of satisfied clients
- Broad base of musical styles (rock, classical, jazz, blues, metal, bluegrass, folk, theater, big band, symphonic, pop, punk, country, march, gospel, avant-garde...)
- Over 20 yrs teaching experience and work with recognized professionals including work in some of the top-rated private schools in the United States
- Over 30 years performing experience

Instrument-specific instruction:
- Voice
- Guitar [Spanish, acoustic, electric]
- Electric Bass
- Piano/Keyboard
- Woodwinds [specializing in saxophones]
- Percussion
- Brass & Bowed Strings [performance preparation only]

My process is based on (but does not adhere strictly to
) the Classical approach to Western tonal harmony and asks that the students develop certain fundamentals of technique and theory. In my experience, this structure creates the strongest foundation for pupils to build the rest of their musical lives on, whether professionally or solely for personal enjoyment. All of my students are on the fast track to studying music theory. Whatever level they are at when I start with them, I guide their efforts into bringing the students up to a certain level of comprehension regarding the mathematical aspects of music and how it relates to their instruments. This understanding of theoretical principles of sound allows the students to play any style of music they wish, no matter how their tastes may change throughout their lives.

Curriculum Gradation:
Elements of rhythm
Elements of pitch
Elements of dynamics
Elements of articulation
Reading/Writing notation
Tone development

How to advance to the next level

My method of teaching focuses on building up strengths and knowledge so that a student can become proficient at learning on their own. I do this by creating a custom curriculum for each individual I teach. This accomplishes two things, keeping you as a student entertained and enthusiastic. I have background in music theory, and have taught for several years to beginners, and intermediate students. This has allowed me to learn to adapt to each individuals learning style so that they progress quickly, and comfortably.
