Although guitar is my main instrument, I have also played bass allot professionally over the years. There were times when I actually played more bass than guitar gigs. My focus in the bass lessons in to develop technique, rhythm and knowledge of the bass fingerboard. I can also teach music and chart reading and how to create your own bass lines.

About Robert
Robert began playing guitar in Houston, Texas at the age of 12. It was not long before he began playing in bands and played his first professional gig at age 17. Robert performed in and around the Houston area for five years before deciding to study music on the college level. He attended the University of North Texas and later attended Musicians Institute. While a student at MI, Robert was given the Outstanding Student of the Year Award for 1991-'92. Robert began teaching at MI in the guitar school (GIT) in 1993. He has played with Bo Diddley, Tim Bogert, Chevy Chase, Floyd Radford, Dea
con Jones, Joe Houston and countless others. He has performed for Buddy Ebson and Chevy Chase and has partied with the Monkees. In addition to playing guitar Robert also plays and teaches bass guitar and piano.

Robert is very nice and polite. I think the lesson was sufficient for the first lesson. He gave me homework to work on the D, G, and C chords. We went over the right hand numbering PIMA. I need to determine what my goals are in playing the guitar.

I am very happy with my guitar lesson with Mr. Calva. He is very knowledgeable and very patient. He found out my musical background and goals. He used that to structure my lessons today. He then gave me homework, tips, and short term goals. I am super pleased with his style of teaching. By the way, I am 50 years young...

My bass experience began later than my guitar experience, but I pursued it just as fervently! Over the last ten years or so of playing I have played bass in many projects. From alternative, to metal, to folk, to indie-rock. I've been a guest studio bass player on a good number of tracks and still continue to play and teach today.

Most bass teachers that also play guitar are really just guitar players that can play their way around a bass on a basic level. However, there is much more to a bass than just playing what a guitar player or other musician might be playing!

The bass is a unique and colorful instrument in its own right. It shares some things in common with a guitar, but has a wide range of its own qualities and abilities! The bass plays a PIVOTAL role in almost all music. I would argue that it is even MORE crucial than many other instruments like guitar or piano.

There are not enough skilled bass players out there. Let's get to learning and add one more to their ...

About Andrew
Music is my life. As cheesy as that phrase goes, for me, it holds true. Everything I do and have been doing has been geared towards music. I've been in one working/gigging band or other without break for the past 10 years. I began intensely learning to play guitar at the age of 9 and have not stopped. The second I started learning I knew that that was what I wanted to do. Fast forward to now, and here I am loving every minute of it. I took lessons of my own as a kid, which helped shape me greatly. I then picked up bass at the age of 13.
I've taught personalized lessons for over 7 year
s now without a single complaint. At this point in my musical career, the majority of my experience and attitude has come from being "in the field". I've played South By South West, Austin City Limits, Westheimer Block Party, opened up for bands like the Misfits and the Shins, shared the stage with bands like The Wallflowers, Minus the Bear, and Echo and the Bunnymen, and been on tour and lived the whole life more often than not!
YOU can be an active musician. If you have the passion and desire. The first step though, is learning your instrument. Learning an instrument is something that stays with you for the rest of your life. It's an unfaltering companion that can benefit you in so many ways. I like to toss out the strict "teacher/student" regiment and create a laid back, fun, easy going atmosphere. I want to be buds and SHARE music with each other and introduce you into this world that I have grown to love so so much. There is nothing more rewarding. I promise. So let's get started!

*** Lesson Details ***
I am very laid back. Your progress is directly linked to you. I will give it my all to teach you and help you, but if you don't practice or soak it in, that's on you! I hate having a tense, seminar type lesson atmosphere. Lessons with me will be easy going and relaxed. I don't want to have to put on a sweater vest and wag my finger as a I scold you. That's just not me.
However, I DO expect you to get things done. Why waste your time with lessons if you're not going to take them seriously on any level? The curriculum will be totally personalized for YOU. After all, not everybody likes the same music and style. The first lesson or two will be getting a handle on exactly what YOU want to learn and what YOU want out of it. Finding out your favorite bands/artists, guitar players, bass players, etc. There's nothing worse than being taught something you have no desire for, but having it drilled into your head week after week! So whether that be blues, folk, metal, whatever, that's the first step. With that information I'll begin constructing and laying out the rest of your lesson plan.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Although I assume you have an instrument of your own (if not I recommend getting one, it sort of helps), if you're looking to just try things out at first I have more than a few extra that I'd be happy to let you use. My teaching studio doubles as a recording studio as well. This means 2 things: if ever you would like to record some of your music you know where to go! And also, I have the means to record the entire lesson if you'd like. You'll need to supply the blank CD(s) of course. It's not a requirement to record the lesson, just an option! Basically, I have everything you could ever possibly need for music lessons here. So you're set.

*** Travel Equipment ***
Guitars, amps, etc. anything that would be needed I've got!

*** Specialties ***
I am versed in blues, rock, metal, folk, hardcore, acoustic-finger-style and various other acoustic styles, and more. Through teaching and experience as a working musician I have mastered most genres and styles. When sitting at home jamming in my free time, I probably most frequently find myself playing acoustic finger-style, blues, folk, or hardcore, but love and appreciate most styles. So, bring it on!

I just finished my third lesson with Andrew and I am enjoying my lessons very much. In my first lesson I did not even know how to hold a guitar and he was very patient with me and teaches at a pace I was comfortable with. He is keeping me motivated to learn by introducing new skills and lessons and critiques me in a way that I want to improve. He always sends me home with assignments that I can use to practice and we typically spend the beginning of the next class going over it. He will make sure to correct any bad-habits that I may be developing and shows me ways in which I can improve. I feel this helps build a solid foundation that I hope to build upon in the years to come. I highly recommend learning guitar from Andrew.

This class is perfect for beginners and intermediate students! We will learn techniques, styles and how to craft our tone while studying the history of the bass guitar and the influential musicians who played them.

About Rachel
I started my musical path in a Ballet Studio. I fell in love with the crackle of the vinyl record playing as I learned to listen and dance with the rhythm.

I started playing the guitar when I was nine and took classical lessons until I was seventeen.I really enjoy the art of practice and the journey of patience. The process of learning has helped me carve out and cultivate my style of music. It's opened up a lot of doors for me in my life. I've had the honor to play with a lot of great performers and have been lucky enough to tour the U.S. and Canada with festivals and showcases such as V
ans Warped Tour, South By Southwest and the Halifax Pop Explosion.I've been the opening act for Carolyn Wonderland, Maria Taylor, Tsunami Bomb, Tilly and the Wall, Basia Bulat, Rise Against, Strike Anywhere. Anathallo, Cursive, Milton Hopkins, and Pony Up.

When I have free time I volunteer with the Houston Chapter of Girls Rock Camp to help teach girls empowerment through songwriting and music.

*** Lesson Details ***
I began teaching as an afterschool job when I was 16. I was homeschooled so I feel that the experience taught me that everyone learns differently and that there is not just one standardized method to playing music.

My Teaching style varies with each student, but the one constant is my ability to make each and every client I encounter completely fall in LOVE with music. It's my super power. Lesson plans are tailored for your specific needs and to help you achieve your musical goals and aspirations at your desired pace. I enjoy my students and making music with them.

Here is an overview of the lessons that I provide.

About Al (Andrew)
My name is Andrew Alan.
You can call me Al.

In 2002, I got a cherry red Fender Squier P-bass for my birthday.
I was enchanted.
Couldn't put it down for a second.

For days,
weeks,
months,
I struggled. My fingers were sore and blistered, but I never gave up.

In the fourteen years that followed, I carried the bottom end of several bands, church groups, and my own compositions and going on to win several competitions.
Knowing that one day I would want to work for myself, I graduated with a BS in Accounting from LSU.

From there, I did a stint in the corporate world as an
Internal Auditor.
Though the work was challenging and I worked among the best of colleagues, I knew I couldn't carry on and be true to myself.

I left that life to pursue my passion of music. To write, and play, and produce, and teach others.

Through teaching myself, and through the guidance of incredibly skilled mentors, I've learned the path to becoming a better bassist each and every day that enriches my life and brings me profound happiness.

I want to show you, too.
