About Gio
I studied music at UCF (Orlando), focusing on classical and jazz guitar, but I also have years of experience playing rock, blues, folk, hip-hop, and musical theater on both guitar and drums.

I have been teaching guitar, drums, and piano for about eight years to students of all ages. Music is what I'm passionate about and it's what I enjoy. I want to inspire that same passion into the hearts and minds of others.

*** Lesson Details ***
I am a laid-back teacher, fun, and I focus on the needs, abilities, and ambitions of the student. In turn, students must realize that learning an instrument takes a lot of work and dedication. One can't expect to learn very much if s/he only practices or thinks about the instrument during the lesson. If the student is willing to put some time into practicing, then I will help them go far!

*** Studi
o Equipment ***
I have several guitars, a drum kit, djembe, mandolin, clarinet and full-size keyboard.

*** Specialties ***
Guitar: Classical, jazz, American or Irish folk, rock and pop; lead or rhythm.

Strong instrumental playing begins with a solid understanding of the fundamentals of music and the simple act of making a sound from the instrument. Students learn to play music by ear first, and are later introduced to music notation. More advanced lessons emphasize sight-reading, expression, and improvisation.

An instrumentalist since age 10, Thomas has experience as a performer and teacher. His previous education has included methodology classes on teaching specific instruments, and he is available to teach beginning trumpet lessons.

About Thomas
Piano, woodwinds, trumpet, composition
Chords, sight-reading, theory, jazz, classical, and pop

No one ever regrets learning an instrument… yet many grow old wishing they had taken music lessons! A talent they’ll be able to develop their entire life, your children will thank you for giving them the chance to learn music. And bonus points for you: after just a couple years, you’ll have free entertainment every Christmas!

Or maybe YOU’RE the one that wishes to learn! It is never too late to begin learning an instrument. Everybody has the ability, and if you’re determined and interested, there’s nothing stopping us from achieving this very special goal. (Interested in learning to compose? Scroll to the bottom to learn more.)

Everybody learns differently, and everybody likes different things. Whether it’s improvising or singing alon
gside a song you love or reading through a classical concerto, I’ll help prepare you or your child to tackle a wide variety of styles, without missing out on any of the basics that turn good players into phenomenal musicians. We all know it’s not about being the best. It’s about having fun, and playing music well is definitely fun. Music lessons include:

1. Building a really strong foundation so it's easy to interpret or understand any part, and to play it with the right amount of practice.

2. Learning to sight-read music, so you can play it well as soon as possible.

3. Learning how to improvise (make-up) music, learn music by ear, and to understand and create chords, which lets you play music in different ways.

4. Play different styles from classical to jazz to popular music.

5. Learning how to practice efficiently so you can learn music as fast as possible.

6. Composing our own original music.

Practice makes perfect! Learning an instrument helps build self-confidence and discipline. If your child’s bored, distracted, or just needs a constructive hobby, music is a great place to get them interested in something that will help them feel better about themselves, and the effects will be felt across everything else they do, through better studying habits to a more patient, diligent work ethic.

It’s also relaxing! Stressed about work? Need an escape? Everybody has the power to learn an instrument. Seriously, there’s no such thing as “talent.” Just start lessons and get practicing! It really is that simple, and I’ll guide you through every step of the way.

I have a diverse background teaching students of all ages, from 3-year-olds to retirees alike, customizing what we learn to the individual student. We’ll learn how to read music just as easily as you read words; improvise and compose music of our own; and feel good playing any style: classical, jazz, rock, and all. My experience as a working musician in films, musical theater, and pop music, as well as classical concert music, allows me to appreciate and teach styles that many other instructors overlook, and I know full well that learning an instrument is not about becoming a professional; it’s about being able to connect to others or oneself through music… and also to just have fun! There’s no need to learn music we don’t like! It’s not about stuffing Beethoven into your kids’ ears… we just want to make music, be that Beethoven or Billy Joel.

Learning an instrument is one of those few skills that will genuinely last you your whole life. I don’t want to sugarcoat it: it takes time to learn an instrument. It takes practice, and sometimes it’s frustrating. But the results are well worth it.

Now get out there and make some music! But start by signing up for lessons. I can’t wait to get started!

---

“What’s that chord?” “Why does all my music sound the same?” “How do I fix this voicing?” “I just can’t get it out of my head!” …sound familiar? You’ve probably hit a rut. Or maybe you’re just starting out. Either way, you want your music to sound new, exciting, and to come out exactly how you hear it in your head. Yes… you CAN learn to compose music, you CAN learn to be more creative, and you CAN learn to share your sound with the world.

Film music, classical, jazz… whatever your interest, all music comes from the same place, and by learning a handful of basic concepts, you can apply these to whatever style you’re trying to write. Learning to emulate another musician involves knowing what they’re doing. Learning to create a groundbreaking sound requires that you know what’s already been done, and how to achieve it. Step by step, we’ll work our way there.

We’ll learn how to write cool, interesting chord progressions, how to write beautiful melodies, and how to voice chords. We’ll learn how to control the mood of our music, from making it sound relaxed to adding tension wherever we want. Maybe you’re trying to write for an orchestra, or just a small band. By learning the basics, you can then easily break away from what’s been done and come up with something truly new… the goal of any aspiring composer!

I have a wealth of experience as a trumpeter and music teacher, and hold three degrees in music: DMA from Univ. of Georgia, MM from UT-Austin, and BM from N. Dakota State Univ. I am trained mostly in and play primarily "classical" trumpet, but have experience performing and teaching jazz and pop/commercial styles. Working with kids and adults on music is enjoyable and fulfilling, and I strive to help students as much as possible.

About Chris
My name is Chris, and I have been playing trumpet for over twenty years. I grew up in the TX public schools and was a two time TMEA All-State Musician. I hold three degrees in music from accredited universities: DMA at UGA, MM at UT-Austin, BM at NDSU.
I enjoy teaching and helping others, and have a patient, kind approach to working with people. Music is a wonderful gift that we can all share in, and I am happy to pass on what I have gained from my musical experiences.

In the past 4 years, I have tutored dozens of students and worked with different trumpet players in my area. As a music major at the University of Illinois, I seek a way to continue my passion for teaching and seeing students develop into wonderful players. Trained in general music, theory, and skills in teaching, I can truly connect with your student and ensure that they gain knowledge and learn to love playing their horn!

The most valuable way a student can learn is if he or she has a positive connection with the teacher. In my case, I ensure that I understand not only the student's strengths and places for improvement, but also the uniqueness of his or her character and what teaching methods the student responds to. Every child is unique in how they learn, and all deserve a positive experience without intimidation and impatience from teachers. Teaching music also goes hand in hand with teaching your student dedication, work ethic, and strong character!

About Mercedes
I am a current Music Education major at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, pursuing a minor in Psychology. Before that, I attended West Aurora High School as the first chair trumpet player in the concert and jazz setting for 2 years, and was a trumpet section leader and drum major of the marching band there.
I earned the John Phillip Sousa Band Award and the Semper Fidelis Marine Corps Musical Excellence Award for leadership, musical talent, and dedication in music. I was privately taught for many years under Dr. Rod C. Schueller, a leader in trumpet and music education who formerly taught at Michigan State, Texas State, and Northern Illinois University. I currently study under prestigious trumpet professors Ronald Romm and Charles Duval. I graduated in the top 1% of my high school class. As well, I attended and was an intern a
t the prestigious Smith Walbridge Drum Major Clinics, where I earned my 1st class rank nationally as a leader in teaching music.

I have been tutoring trumpet for 4 years, and have been playing for 10. I have taught between the ages of 10 and 17, and have experience on the beginning level up to classical and jazz music at the advanced level. Teaching is one of the greatest experiences I have ever had, and doing what I love for the rest of my life is a blessing in itself!

With my students, I work on creating a positive and comfortable playing environment so that the student feels safe making mistakes and asking questions. The only way to grow as a player is find the confidence to fail. As brass players, we need diligence, patience, and strong work ethic to improve, and a safe place to gain these skills is essential to every student. I want to get to know exactly how the student plays and what their goals are so I can work with them on achieving them and a little bit beyond them as well. Learning how to play an instrument or get better at it goes far beyond simple instruction- it comes from a connection to the music and a joyful willingness to mess up sometimes! That's how we grow.

Last year our 10-year old daughter started playing the trumpet in Beginning Band. Over half-way through the year she missed a lot of school due to illness, got behind and was forced to drop-out of band. Over the summer we started online trumpet lessons with Mercedes to help our daughter catch up with her peers. We feel so fortunate to have found Mercedes! She is an EXCELLENT teacher. She is enthusiastic about music/playing trumpet, creative in all the ways she helps our daughter improve, positive and patient (SO important when teaching beginners) and she truly is amazing at keeping our daughter engaged during every lesson. During each 30 minute lesson, our daughter makes noticeable progress! Plus Mercedes keeps the lessons fun so our daughter happily participates. Thanks to the progress she has made with Mercedes, she is feeling confident enough to return to Second Year Band later this month. We plan to keep up the lessons with Mercedes and look forward to her ongoing support and guidance during our daughter's important beginning-to-intermediate instrument learning stage.

I've taken lessens with Mercedes for two years. Every time I left a lessen I had a lot of good ideas and ways to strengthen my playing. I never felt like lessens with Mercedes were a teacher to student environment. It was very chill and more like friend helping friend. That to me is the best relationship to truly learn. Mercedes helped me learn a sense of confidence that is not only used in Trumpet but in life.

Learning to play the trumpet is a rewarding experience. Many people think you need to be big and tough to play the trumpet. But it's quite the opposite - it is an instrument requiring precision coordination between the embochure (lips) and the fingers. It's more akin to precision surgury than an athletic competition.

I will help the student develop a good foundation to play the trumpet well. Everyone wants to play loud and high but developing a good sound is crucial before attempting advanced techniques. I will help the student make sure they are developing and progressing in the right direction.

About Sean
We are a husband and wife piano teaching team that enjoy seeing children grow as they expand their musical skill set. We are firm believers of learning the fundamentals. We teach all ages and levels, and want our students to be having fun!

And if your piano needs a tuning, we do that too!

It is great getting a student to think and analyze the task at hand. It might seem too hard at first, but I will walk the student through the process of figuring out how to play a piece. Learning music gives you a lot of skills applicable to everyday life.
