About Michael
Michael has worked with kids for 10 years in schools and arts programs to find fun and their best self through performance. He has taught orchestra, chamber music, jazz band and music theory in the public schools, while performing in local ensembles in and around the city. He also has studied drama, voice and movement and believes all these skills help in expressing yourself--no matter what pieces you want to play!

In addition to working with students K-12, he also loves working with adults. I try to provide a nurturing atmosphere for someone trying revive or discover previously hidden musical interests!

*** Lesson Details ***
We begin with what we love. The student usually chooses one of his or her favorite songs to interpret. Later, we add music, usually from the classical or jazz fields, that build our skills and help us f
eel successful. All technique is based on real music. Learning scales, keys and music theory become part of the music. By the end of 6 months, we will have a "repertoire" of several songs that express our best self!

Motivated

I'm a senior citizen that still works. I played some other instruments when I was younger and always wanted to play piano and Michael has motivated me to continue to learn and fit my practice into my work schedule. Anyone who wants to learn to play an instrument should look no further then Michael.

My Background

I've been playing with classical ensembles and rock bands since 2001. Even though I started on classical trombone and rock guitar, I have come to expand my repertoire to a variety of instruments and genres. During my time in college I performed with the University choir, orchestra, and band. I also have organized, wrote/arranged for, and performed with a variety of bands in my home state of New Mexico, as well as Japan, and the San Francisco Bay Are
a.

Since 2006 I have been an active teacher. This profession has taken me everywhere from working with classical guitar classes in New Mexico high schools to Elementary students in Japan to a variety of private students of various musical instruments and genres everywhere I've been. Since relocating to the Bay Area in 2010, I've had the pleasure of working with lots of great students from kids to adults with a wide range of ambitions. Since 2012 I've been running my own full time studio along.

Philosophy of Learning

Lessons are generally designed to work towards giving students the tools to accomplish their goals and become increasingly independent over time. While all students will study similar fundamentals regarding technique, theory, and performance, every lesson is as different as every person. What kind of music do you want to make? I'll tell you what you need to do to get there, and help you take the steps to achieve your aspirations.

I also love to help students put together a song, record, and produce it for them so that they can have a recording to share with their friends and family.

I also hold events for my students. (Check out our pictures and videos below!)
Younger students have the "Young Musicians Showcase" every few months where individual students and band classes have a chance to perform and celebrate their accomplishments with friends and family.
Adult students occasionally have events where they get a chance to get together and play music as well.

Aside from in-studio lessons, students also have the option to sign up for online lessons via Skype.
(*Online lessons offered during different times than in-studio lessons.)

*Unfortunately due to scheduling issues, I'm not currently accepting students for bi-weekly lessons. I can do regular weekly lessons, or occasional drop-in lessons, but bi-weekly appointments make it really hard for me to give the best scheduled times to my existing weekly students. I'm sorry for the inconvenience.

My studio is equipped with:

*Multiple Music Stands

*P.A. System

*Vocal and instrument microphones

*Guitars, Basses, and a Banjo

*Two guitar amps and a bass amp

*Various percussion including a fully equipped acoustic drum set

*A Roland V-Drums electronic drum set

*An electric piano console

*A MicroKorg Synthesizer

*A Tuba, Trombone, Cornet, and Flute

*An extensive physical and virtual music library

*A recording system that students are not only welcome to use but encouraged to

*HD Webcam and condenser microphone for high fidelity online lessons via Skype

Hello! If you would like exciting, challenging and most importantly fun trumpet lessons, study with me! I use songs/repertoire the student can choose from as the basis of musical concepts. Ear training, music theory and all technical aspects are taught consistently based on the student's skill level. The student's happiness, progress, and interest are of great importance to my teaching methods. For younger students, a curriculum is used to help gage the student's progress and understanding. For older students a curriculum is also used, however, it is more lenient in regards to the student's needs. I have experience teaching all ages from 10 to 50 yr old players, thus I understand the importance of teaching in an organized, linear way. Personally I have been playing trumpet for 17 years, teaching for 6, received my Bachelors in Music Education, and will receive my Masters in Jazz Performance from NYU. My performing experience ranges from orchestral to jazz, reggae, musical theater, and

About Alexandra
I received my Bachelors from UMASS Amherst in trumpet performance and music education. While attending I was trained to become an educator for K-12 grades, receiving experience as an elementary and high school assistant. I have taught private lessons for the past 6 years to all age groups. Throughout the years I have learned a lot about various teaching methods, the importance of curriculum, and how to hold a student's interest.

Recently, while attending NYU to receive my Masters in Jazz Performance, I have been teaching Undergraduate non-music major students trumpet and piano. All of these students have varied in musical expertise, interest in artists/genres, and of course personality and learning style. Through this I have gained much experience in how to teach the same concept different ways. Reading music, classical and jazz tongu
ing, phrasing, sight reading, and range are just a few concepts I focus on with students.

As a classical trumpet player, I understand the demands of becoming a soloist or orchestral member through learning the necessary repertoire and technique. As a jazz trumpet player, I am able to teach ear training, how to create lines and understand harmony, as well as the physical demands of range and articulation.

I am also able to teach piano, I have 4 years of classical piano experience. In addition to my personal studies and teaching experiences. I have taught piano to a range of age groups as well (5-25). Based on skill level, I use certain method books to include scales, chords, reading music, rhythm, and basic musicianship skills.

It would be wonderful to have you as my student, to train, work, and grow together as great musicians!

Alex is a great teacher! I took private lessons with Alex through my university for a semester, and I am thankful that I did. She helped me immensely with my form, and I also learned a great deal about jazz and jazz theory that I can use again in the future. I would definitely recommend Alex as a teacher!

I was an older student but beginner trumpet player when I first started taking lessons from Alex. I didn't have much of a musical background but her clear passion about the trumpet, and her enthusiasm, patience and encouragement as a teacher made me a fan of the trumpet as well. Her lessons were varied and tailored to fit my experience level and individual playing style which kept them interesting. By introducing different and creative ways to work on technique Alex continued to make me a better player. I would highly recommend her.

I am a passionate teacher and I work to understand each individual and help achieve the goals we set together. I love working with special needs and accommodations.

About Sandra
Hi, I'm Sandra and I have been teaching in the Bay Area since 2006. I have a passion for working with young students, especially those with special needs, in a fun and encouraging environment. I design individualized lesson plans and your child will have clear direction of weekly goals. I expect my students to work towards mastery and passion for themselves through their talents with the trumpet, and music in general.

I have backgrounds in music performance and psychology, and I use both to understand your child's needs and working styles engaging them to find the most progress out of lessons. I have a holistic approach combining music with students specific interests to form discipline to learning the trumpet.

How does your service stand out?
My studio requires students to practice a minimum of 30 minutes every day with wee
kly progress reports, weekly listening to music for their instrument with evaluations, semester auditions, and recitals. I require students to video record each practice session so I can verify practice time as well as provide suggestions to maximize efficiency. I encourage involvement with outside music ensembles and we take field trips to watch professional musicians. Any student with enthusiasm is welcome in my studio!!

What do you enjoy about the work you do?
I love getting to know all different students and seeing them grow. I look long term for satisfaction with my job, it barely feels like work. I get to make music daily with really cool kids, what could be better than that?!

What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I start wherever the student is. We work on fundamentals regardless of ability, and I assess what level the student plays to make a decision on what materials we use.

How did you get started teaching?
I started teaching when I was in high school to help my band director out. I always wanted to be the type of teacher that was similar to my mentors; compassionate, hard working, enthusiastic, and patient. I began teaching professionally when I was in music college and continued to enjoy working with all types of students.

What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with students as young as 6 and as old as 70. I work with special needs in any form. I work with students that practice really hard to attain a specific goal and others who are only trying to get better for band music.

What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Find someone who can thoroughly answer your questions and will also be flexible to meet your needs. Make sure the teacher still takes enrichment classes to keep current with research, their instrument, and to help develop better and newer ways of teaching.

I offer in-person and online lessons ranging from 45-90 minutes.

I teach the trumpet from the perspective of a professional performer. I have been academically trained, but my teaching breaks from traditional academic norms. I have experience performing in almost every style of music that involves the trumpet. I use that experience to help you learn to play the music you want to play, the way you want to play it. We approach the lessons this way whether you are interested in jazz, classical, pop, R&B, salsa, or tejano. You name it, I can get you there.

About Eddie
Eddie Lewis has a unique teaching style that helps you learn how to teach yourself. He teaches a learning philosophy he calls The Art of Accumulative Practicing. When done correctly, Mr. Lewis' methods will make every minute of your practice time count towards your progress. If you practice ten minutes, then you will be ten minutes better when you put your instrument in its case.

Trumpet students should know that Mr. Lewis has written a number of method books, some of which have been used by trumpet players around the world to help them with their tone, range and endurance. If you are having trouble with your chops, Lewis' reputation as a "Chop Doctor" may be precisely what you're looking for.

Eddie Lewis is also an established jazz improvisation teacher. Some of his past students are considered the best jazz musicians of our day.

Mr. Lewis has extensive knowledge in both classical and jazz disciplines. His extensive study and performance in both genres on the horn offer invaluable knowledge to cater to his students. I think the defining factor of Mr. Lewis is that he will guide his student to where the STUDENT wants to go. He will always work towards the STUDENT'S goals, the STUDENT'S sound, and the STUDENT'S aspirations. He never makes the lessons about himself, or sounding like him. He makes lessons personal and STUDENT-GUIDED. And with his endless vault of knowledge, there is no limit to how far he can take a student.

Mr. Lewis remains professional but can also develop sympathetic, personal relationships with his students. He is always organized and EVERY bit of work that he does for his students remains on the top of his priority list on his computer. His organization makes every lesson expedient and effortless. He remains to be the most caring and thoughtful teacher and human that I have met.

I have had multiple trumpet teachers in the past, but no one I have studied from amounts to a fraction of what Mr. Lewis is. Mr. Lewis isn't just a great trumpet teacher, or classical teacher, or even jazz teacher. He embodies the role as a mentor and guide through the study of expression through the medium of music, and has helped me become a more mature individual.
