I have a wealth of experience as a trumpeter and music teacher, and hold three degrees in music: DMA from Univ. of Georgia, MM from UT-Austin, and BM from N. Dakota State Univ. I am trained mostly in and play primarily "classical" trumpet, but have experience performing and teaching jazz and pop/commercial styles. Working with kids and adults on music is enjoyable and fulfilling, and I strive to help students as much as possible.

Hello and welcome to my studio!
In my studio, all trumpet players feel welcomed and I will do my best to keep you/your child happy and having fun while taking lessons.
Your first lesson begins with breathing exercises as we need air to play trumpet. Proper posture, embouchure for playing, and making a nice sound will come next. I have several method books depending on your trumpet experience, but if you already have a book we can use yours. We will also work on the more detailed aspects of trumpet playing such as articulations and range (yay high notes!), while learning new songs!
If you are already a more advanced student, we will work on music that pushes you to a higher level (Clarke, Arbans, Real Book etc.). I will also give you more detailed and advanced concepts to remove excess tension, play more musically instead of robotically, and overall make playing feel much easier.
I'm glad you have decided to take trumpet lessons and look forward to helping you make great music! ...
About Andrew
As a teacher, I want nothing more than my students to be happy playing music while attaining their goals. I started trumpet as a young elementary schooler and began teaching private lessons in 2013. I had very poor technique up through high school but landed a jazz performance major in college

Since my graduation from the University of South Carolina, I have enjoyed a varied career in performing many genres of music around the world and in the United States. I have performed pop music while sailing around the Mediterranean Sea, toured with a Broadway show in the United States, and, recently, playing jazz in New York City. My journey has also led me to learn about the physical practice of the trumpet, which has given a totally new approach on how to instruct students in a highly personal way.
I am confident that I can contribute as your trumpet instructor because of my varied career and the skills I am able to teach. Specifically:
• The traditional approach to trumpet playing, which builds a strong musician who can play with others
• The physical practice of trumpet, which takes into account the movements that need to be engrained in order to play efficiently.
• Jazz improvisation
• Commercial music style (rock, Broadway, salsa, pop, etc.)
• Music theory

From the beginning she tailored her lessons to include the music that my son was interested in and also added increasingly more complex music to work on and master.
Sandra has taped him playing during lessons to show him how and where he can improve in body position, quality of sound and other nuances. She regularly uses her laptop computer to show videos of performances that support the lesson and also assigns various Internet sites to view for exposure to other musicians and styles.
Sandra regularly provides opportunities for my son to perform in public. He has performed at the annual CMEA event at San Jose State University, and other smaller events where he played solo on stage. They have both joined in at a local café for practice in improvisation, as my son loves to play jazz. This has really helped in his jazz solo opportunities at school. She has also organized a quartet of student trumpet players to work together on various music pieces and then they all performed together for family and friends. This was a unique experience for the children to practice and play together and perform as a group.
My son is also interested in basketball and baseball, and Sandra has been very flexible in scheduling lessons to accommodate my son’s athletic and school schedules. After about 6 months of lessons, she offered twice a week lessons to capitalize on my son’s enthusiasm and increase the speed of musical advancement so his confidence soared and he wanted to play more because he liked doing something he felt he was good at. He kept this schedule for about a year and then back to once a week to allow for more time for other interests.
During middle school, my son played trumpet in both the Advanced Band and also Jazz Band classes. This past summer, Sandra again offered twice weekly lessons to get ready for his high school debut. As a result, he was chosen to play first chair in the high school jazz band. He was also one of only two freshmen that were accepted into the most advanced band class (also known at Wind Ensemble) at Lincoln High School.
I recommend Sandra Laverty, without reservation, for any trumpet teaching opportunity."
