My approach to teaching involves combining work on technical fundamentals and transcription. I find that starting with detailed technical practice makes the achievement of a player's goals quicker, and transcribing from recordings adds real playing experience and is invaluable for building musical vocabulary.

I have been playing the bass guitar as my primary instrument since 2000. I have performed, recorded and written with a number of successful bands in the past. I am happy to take students at any skill level, and for any style. I believe strongly in integrating music theory and ultimately moving students toward musical self-suffiency, rather than focusing exclusively on learning particular pieces.

About Ben

Hi, there! My name is Ben and I can't wait to meet you! I've been teaching private lessons since 2012 and have taught students of all ages from 3 to adult. I have experience not just with teaching but also with writing, recording, and performing music in successful bands and on multiple instruments

Fantastic, patient and kind ukelele instructor. I recommend Ben without reservation.
Thanks Ben!

Ben has been instructing my 2 kids (now aged 11 and 9) in-home for at least 5 years. We started off with piano for the first few years but then switched to a combination of piano and acoustic guitar (half a session dedicated to each instrument).

He is patient, kind, and highly knowledgeable. I clearly see the upward trajectory in my kids' musical capabilities. One of my kids can be difficult to deal with, especially when he is tired, but Ben would mold his approach to the lesson on the spot to keep my kid engaged (e.g., instead of continuing the lesson on the actual piano, he'd switch to a fun music-oriented game).

Are you interested in being able to confidently play lead and rhythm parts in a band? Want to learn to write songs? Want to learn to just strum along to your favorite records by yourself?

I will teach you or your child all of the knowledge and tools needed to do whatever your dream is on your instrument. My aim is to help every student achieve their personal goals on their instrument within the context of a relaxed and patient environment that promotes a love of music!

I achieve this by:

1) Individualizing lesson plans so that each student stays engaged and learns in the style that is best for them as learners.

2) Ensuring that students learn BOTH how to play their instrument as well as the theory behind what they are playing. This creates a more well-rounded musician that is capable of problem solving on their instrument and being able to play in a variety of settings.

I have been playing music for over 10 years and teaching private lessons since 2014. I ...

Chris is a fantastic teacher. Not only does he know his stuff, but he is very good at catering lessons to your needs and interests at any level. He goes above and beyond and makes everything “groovier” than you could imagine! The speed at which I have improved since starting lessons with him is astonishing compared to where I was before. I’ve had several teachers for various instruments in my life and Chris has by far been the most impactful.

I have really enjoyed my lessons with Chris. He helped me identify my goals as a guitar player and develop the tools to get there. I have been getting to focus on the music I want to play while still learning the important fundamentals and theory that lay the foundation for good playing in any genre. I have improved a lot since starting lessons with Chris. He's a nice guy and great teacher/musician. Can't go wrong.
Sam
Working with Chris has changed how I look at my guitar. I'm late to the party (older). Previously, with memorized chord positions, I've been able to get by. In short order Chris has me in a new place. Understanding music theory, especially related to the guitar, has been presented in a way that works. And it's fun!

"Our son took bass lessons from Alex and really enjoyed them! He learned to listen to current songs and find the bass line. Xavier also learned how to read tab, and he really enjoyed playing his bass along with recorded tracks. Our son is a pretty busy kid, trying to balance sports, school, scouts and music. We did not want him to feel pressure about learning the bass, but we did want him to get a taste of how fun it can be to play music! We also wanted him to understand that learning to play requires a combination of listening and reading music. Alex was a great fit for our son! And now Xavier has a basic musical skill that we know he can build on someday!"

"Most Excellent Teacher

I feel very grateful to have found and now be taught by Jesse. Despite my considerable age beyond his, he treats me as a peer and has kept me on my toes with learning tasks. Further, lessons are actually fun as well as challenging and about once a quarter, we have "band night" where many of his active students come together to socialize and to "jam" together.
I've had other teachers in my life (I'm in my 60's) and Jesse is by far the most intelligent, skillful and enthusiastic.
My only regret is that I didn't find him sooner."
