I can help beginners get started or coach advanced students who are preparing for auditions.

About Thomas
Thomas J. W. is an active music teacher, composer, adjudicator, and clinician in the greater Philadelphia area. He has over fifteen years experience as a concert band director, marching band director, jazz improvisation instructor, choral director, private instructor, and marching drill writer. His directing career has included small rural band programs, small metro programs, large high-achieving suburban programs, and non-profit youth bands. In addition to his band compositions, he also has over forty unpublished vocal arrangements to his credit, most written for use with collegiate men's a cappella groups. Thomas taught over 600 online and local private music lessons in 2016.

Thomas has a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education from The Pennsylvania State University. He holds a teaching certificate in the states of Pennsylvania
and New Jersey and has taught at the secondary level in both states. In addition to both instrumental and choral ensembles at Penn State, Thomas was a student leader in the Penn State Blue Band and a member of the brass section of the Cadets of Bergen County Drum and Bugle Corps in 1993 and 1994. He served as an Associate Director of the Warren Junior Military Band of Youngstown, Ohio from 1995 to 2005. He also served as a visual staff member for the renowned North Penn Marching Knights of Lansdale, PA for one season in 2004.

He is a current adjudicator with Drum Corps International and Cavalcade of Bands. He is a member of MENC, PMEA, NJMEA, ASCAP, CASA, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, and the National Band Association. He appeared in the Marquis Who's Who Among American Educators in 2004 and 2005, an honor rarely bestowed upon teachers, as students who appear in the Who's Who Among American High School Students must nominate them. He currently is a music teacher at the Center for Performing and Fine Arts of the PA Leadership Charter School in West Chester, PA and resides in Downingtown, PA with his wife and two sons.

Thomas will happily work with students on the autism spectrum or students with ADD.

*** Lesson Details ***
My lessons are tailored to the needs and interests of each student. If a student is involved in school music ensembles, we will work with their lesson books from school in addition to material outside of the books, including SmartMusic, Noteflight, and teacher-created materials. We will focus on building proper tone production and individual technique - something that often is difficult to learn in a large ensemble setting.

I am capable of starting a beginner student on any band instrument including percussion, any classical string instrument (violin, viola, cello, string bass), and piano. I can begin a student on drum set and work with them through their first method book, but I would then recommend they find a specialized drum set teacher after a period of six to twelve months.

For advanced students, I work from selected conservatory etude books on developing advanced skills and can work with students on audition pieces for honors bands/orchestras or college auditions.

My lessons are a half-hour once a week, with the option of working for 45 minutes or 60 minutes.

*** Specialties ***
music, band, orchestra, flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon, saxophone, trumpet, french horn, trombone, euphonium, tuba, violin, viola, cello, string bass, piano, Percussion
classical, jazz improvisation

//clinician, professional trumpet player & maker// Over the past 26 years I developed my own technique and teaching methodology how to play brass instruments the most efficient way.

The lip is the sound source which creates a standing airwave within the instrument and the trumpet functions as a filter and amplifier.

I also developed a special tongue technique which requires less movement when phrasing notes ( single, double and triple tongue) and therefore is faster, requires less effort, is very versatile, usable in any style of music and is much more accurate in hitting the notes.

If you understand these two aspects and are able to implement them you perform better with practicing less.

I cover all aspects of trumpet playing ( technique, breathing, posture, embochoure, equipment, phrasing, sight reading, improvisation, high range, endurance, sound quality, repertoire etc.).

About Franz
Franz, trumpeter, clinician, composer and brass instrument maker is the founder and artistic director of the internationally renowned Outreach Music Festival and Academy and leads his own group, Franz’s IDO Quartet. His feed-forward approach, building on traditions and looking beyond the fashionable trend leads to his distinctive style.

Franz is constantly evolving as an artist, producer & teacher searching for new ways to collaboratively expanding the musical language.
Franz was born in Tyrol, Austria. Growing up with traditional Austrian brass music as a soloist, he soon became interested in jazz. She is an alumnus of the Conservatory of the City of Vienna and received an M.S. degree from the Manhattan School of Music, where he studied with Lew Soloff.

As a composer, his stylistic versatility grew to include works for full orc
hestra, chamber groups, choral works, and multimedia events.
He received commissioned works from many prestigious venues and institutions and his works were premiered at places like the 'Theater an der Wien', UN Headquarters NYC ( Year Of the Mountains Launch Event), Red Bull Hangar 7, European Forum Alpbach, Austrian Cultural Forum NYC & Washington, Lincoln Plaza etc.

As a bandleader he performed at the Jazz Standard, Dizzy's Coca-Cola Club Lincoln Center, Porgy & Bess, Brucknerhaus Linz and many Jazz Festivals (Vienna Jazz Festival, Espoo Jazz Festival etc.) Franz is co-leading a brass trio with the legends Dave Taylor (bass trombone ) and John Clark ( french horn). He also has duos with percussion super star Mino Cinelu and pianist Michael Wolff.

Franz also works quite often with leading classical artists like Dietmar Küblböck ( principal Trombone Vienna Philharmonic) and Gerhard Fluch ( principal trumpet Bruckner Orchester Linz) Franz taught at many workshops ( Jazzmarathon Mattighofen, Jazzworkshop Pulawy/Poland, SUNY Purchase, Friedberg Jazz Cocktail, etc) and is regularly hired for masterclasses ( University of Music and Theater Leipzig, Music University Tunis, Musikschule Wiener Neustadt, brass bands, masterclasses at music exhibitions etc.)

In partnership with his father Franz sen., who is a famous trumpet virtuoso in Austria and started his career in the mid 50's, Franz jun. is also hand crafting innovative horns & accessories (Hybrass, DeeflexxBrass). The family business was established in 1965.

Hi! I have studied under a plethora of world-class teachers and am very excited to pass on my knowledge to the next generation of trumpeters. Whether you're an experienced player or just getting started, young or old, I am confident that I can help anyone reach new heights in their playing. I am very passionate about what I do and hope I can share that passion with my students while teaching them good fundamentals and technique on the trumpet.

Some notable people I've studied with (if you don't know who these people are, I suggest you look them up!):
Bill Adam
Chad McCullough
Tage Larsen (4th tpt., Chicago Symphony)
Bill Denton (Principal, Chicago Lyric Opera)
Matthew Comerford (Chicago Lyric Opera)

About Brendan
Brendan has been living in Chicago since 2014, and has recently graduated from DePaul University with a Bachelor's degree in Classical Trumpet Performance. During his time at DePaul, Brendan played in nearly every major ensemble at one point or another, including the renowned DePaul Symphony Orchestra and DePaul Jazz Ensemble.

Since graduating from DePaul, Brendan is now one of a handful of working trumpet players in the Chicago area. He performs regularly with Four Star Brass Band, a New Orleans-style brass band with a Chicago twist, and funk group Get Up With The Get Downs. Recently, he has played with these bands at House of Blues, Martyrs', Reggies', and The Green Mill. He has also played in other brass bands like Hi Hat Second Line and Patriot Brass, and has played gigs with professional big bands Big Band Boom and Heisenberg Un
certainty Players. He is also the resident trumpeter at St. Luke Evangelical Church in Lakeview.

Brendan has performed the national anthem at multiple DePaul sporting events, and has been featured as a soloist in many ensembles within the School of Music. He has put on three recitals in his solo career, each featuring him on standard classical trumpet repertoire, personal arrangements, and original compositions.

--

As a teacher, I believe that the best approach is a naturalistic one. I like to let students discover things that interest them on their own while guiding them in the right direction by ensuring the use of good fundamentals. When a student is enjoying what they are working on in a lesson is when they are most attentive and absorbent of information. Therefore, if a student seems to respond more to a specific kind of music, teaching method, etc., I will likely incorporate that into my lesson as much as possible. I want my lessons to be fun and enjoyable while at the same time setting students on a path for success in music or whatever discipline they may pursue!

Over 20 years professional performing experience. D.M.A., University of Connecticut, 2010. Performances in 49 of the 50 states (sorry, Idaho!), Japan and Taiwan. Currently a full -time university instructor. What's my approach? I believe that most trumpet players develop bad physical habits that make them work against themselves. Its important to develop independent control of elements including breathing, support, embouchure, mouthpiece pressure, etc. The considerable effort we put into mastering the instrument needs to be directed efficiently toward the goal of playing with greater ease and comfort, which results in a higher level of consistency, and above all, the freedom to concentrate on the MUSIC!!

About Dr. Joel
So glad you clicked through this far! I'm confident that we'll have a good time learning about the trumpet and music. I've played professionally with symphony orchestras, concert bands, Latin bands, and jazz ensembles for over 30 years, and I will help you achieve your goals, no matter what kind of music you're into.
