About Michael
Michael has worked with kids for 10 years in schools and arts programs to find fun and their best self through performance. He has taught orchestra, chamber music, jazz band and music theory in the public schools, while performing in local ensembles in and around the city. He also has studied drama, voice and movement and believes all these skills help in expressing yourself--no matter what pieces you want to play!

In addition to working with students K-12, he also loves working with adults. I try to provide a nurturing atmosphere for someone trying revive or discover previously hidden musical interests!

*** Lesson Details ***
We begin with what we love. The student usually chooses one of his or her favorite songs to interpret. Later, we add music, usually from the classical or jazz fields, that build our skills and help us f
eel successful. All technique is based on real music. Learning scales, keys and music theory become part of the music. By the end of 6 months, we will have a "repertoire" of several songs that express our best self!

Motivated

I'm a senior citizen that still works. I played some other instruments when I was younger and always wanted to play piano and Michael has motivated me to continue to learn and fit my practice into my work schedule. Anyone who wants to learn to play an instrument should look no further then Michael.

Viola was my first instrument and I can help you with everything from traditional classical repertoire to modern world, folk and jazz. I like to focus on music theory and reading skills, in addition to developing musicality from the first lesson.

About Kathryn
Kathryn is an enthusiastic and patient contemporary string player specializing in teaching violin and viola. Growing up she played violin and viola in school and community orchestras, as well as bass in jazz bands and small ensembles. She is a graduate of Berklee College of Music, where she studied violin and viola. At Berklee, Kathryn majored in Film Scoring (writing music for film and TV), so she is accomplished in composition as well as performance. She has performed onstage with musicians from all over the world including: Brazilian singer Rosa Passos, Cuban bassist Cachao, alternative rock singer Paul Cole, and Christopher Guest from "This is Spinal Tap."

As a teacher, Kathryn utilizes her training in and experience playing a diverse range of styles in her lessons. She has been teaching private lessons for 10 years and has al
so taught music as a camp counselor, college tutor, and workshop leader. Whether you are looking to pick up a brand new instrument, learn a new style, or work on improving on what you already know, Kathryn can help you reach your goals.

The first lesson was great. She explained some of the fiddle's background, how to hold it, and how to play it all in an interactive way. The time flew by. My daughter is very enthusiastic about the lessons & even more excited about the fiddle than before the lesson. Kathleen is awesome.

"Experienced viola teacher of 30 years available for eager students of all experience levels and ages! I structure my lessons so students learn what they want to learn, while also building a strong foundation of classical guitar skills. I specialize in classical music .

About Kelvin
I am a highly organized, outcome-driven and motivated professional musician and educator with solid experience in the classroom. For the past 25 years, I have been employed with Amati music academy and seven years on the faculty of University of St Francis.
I am very comfortable with all aspects of the current music syllabus, including teaching musical concepts (such as duration, pitch, dynamics, tone color, texture and structure) as well as performance, composition. I am fully qualified, with a Bachelor of Education in Music, Double Masters in music performance and education from University of Nottingham.
I am proficient in classical, jazz and Celtic fiddle violin and possess solid skills in piano (grade 8-13) Royal conservatory system.
Throughout my teaching career, I have been driven to help students achieve their very best. I str
ongly believe that music has the power to change lives – to enhance the social, cultural and spiritual lives of people, and serve as a profound medium of personal expression. Professional perform experience: The Chicago, Natalie Cole, Smokey Robinson, Three tours with Moody Blues, YoYo Ma etc....
The most important thing I look for in a student is communication skills, as well as talent. I like to nurture students and help identify their individual strengths, which is a key factor in shaping a musical persona that will make its mark both on and offstage. I do not advocate a uniform technique for all students. Physical differences and learning styles are always taken into consideration. Potential is as important to me as early achievements and experience. My goal is to help students become self-sufficient, discriminating artists. I discuss practice techniques often and develop individualized scale routines. I encourage initiative and expressive musicality as well as precision. Above all, music needs to bring obvious joy to the student, regardless of the difficulties.”

My goal is to help you progress in your studies of the Viola. I do not expect to have any studio recitals, but I would love to help prepare you for any performances, orchestral or solo, that you have coming up. I am open to your repertoire choices if you have something you are itching to play (I know I have my own bucket list). If needed, I can also make suggestions for repertoire based on your current skill level. As for my history and aspirations for the Viola; I have been studying with Dr. Mark Neumann for four years. I received my Bachelor’s degree in Viola Performance from the University of Oklahoma in 2017, and am currently working towards my Masters Degree in Viola Performance at the University of Oklahoma. I hope to receive my Doctor of Musical Arts in the future.

About Lane
I am currently a Master's Student at the University of Oklahoma. I received my Bachelor's Degree in May of 2017 from the University of Oklahoma. I began my studies of the Viola at age 11, when I started in the public school's orchestra program. From there I continued playing the viola in various orchestras, youth orchestras, and honors orchestras in the Oklahoma City area. From Fall 2013 through Spring 2015, I served as the Violist for OU's Undergraduate Honors String Quartet, studying under Dr. Jon Ruck, Dr. Gregory Lee, and Dr. Mark Neumann. I specialize in Solo works, as well as chamber and orchestral works. I look forward to working with you!
