Private Viola Teacher

I am a professional violinist and violist in the Boston area. I am a graduate of the New England Conservatory where I have studied with Miriam Fried, Donald Weilerstein, and Martha Katz. I have performed extensively throughout my life as a soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral player on both the violin and viola in a variety of professional ensembles including substitute viola work with the Borromeo String Quartet. I draw from this performing background to teach my students of all ages and abilities.

I currently act as Adjunct Instructor of Violin and Viola at Merrimack College, where I serve as a primary instrumental teacher to enrolled students. I have also acted as the primary violin teacher for Main Street Music, LLC, in Waltham. Additionally, I run a private studio of approximately 20 students as young as 6 and as old as 60. Of these, some never touched an instrument before our first lesson, and some are serious conservatory-bound musicians intending to make a career as a ...

Viola:
A stringed instrument that is bowed or played with varying techniques. It is slightly larger than a violin and has a lower and deeper sound. Since the 18th century it has been the middle or alto voice of the violin family, between the violin (which is tuned a perfect fifth above) and the cello (which is tuned an octave below. The strings from low to high are generally tuned to C3, G3, D4, and A4. My lessons always start out with the basics! We start out by learning notes by plucking the strings and then the bow is soon incorporated. The goal is to eventually learn all the notes on the fretboard and also learning how to read and play chords. As the student progresses advanced techniques are introduced, music theory and learning how to solo.

About Karen

Hi! My name is Karen D. I’ve had the pleasure of performing, singing, writing, and recording since I was seven years old. Besides being an Honor Graduate of Berklee School of Music, I have been a lifelong student of the international world-renowned instructors Dante Pavone and Charlie Banacos.

Ms. Karen did a pretty good job, she had ideas for the lesson and provided ideas for the next lesson. She went out of her way to help me with this new idea---------"music" and "reading music." If there was any short fall in the lesson it was on my side and my preparation failings. I have no problem recommending Ms. Karen to others. Regards, JC

Extremely knowledgeable! Karen is a superb guitar instructor. Honestly, I was struggling. Discouraged! She helped me understand my strengths and weaknesses, and moved me from beginner to intermediate in a matter of months. If you’re getting tired of learning from YouTube and smart phone apps, let Karen kick start your guitar playing. You’ll be glad you did. Thanks Karen!!

Lets get fiddling-on the viola! I believe in creating well-rounded musicians that can play any style of music. I will teach you a solid foundational technique, including advanced shifting techniques and simple but beautiful vibrato, that will allow you to play any style of music you would like. I teach all of my students how to improvise in a clear, systematic way, and provide a safe and fun environment to practice being musically creative. You will learn how to "sound" like a fiddler AND a classical violist.

I'm Suzuki Method certified and use a unique blend of method books including the O'Connor Method and a fiddle tableture system I have created. American fiddle, celtic, gypsy, jazz and Mexican waltz's are some of the muscial styles that you will enjoy while learning a solid foundational technique. You will also learn to read music notation right from the get-go. I have lots of experience with teaching individuals with ADHD and Learning Disabilities and have created a visiual ...

She was extremely patient and if I had to miss a lesson, she would insist on lowering the price for the month. I wish I hadn’t had to move, or I’d still be taking lessons from her!

Nisha has been my teacher for almost ten years now! I have learned how to play fiddle, while also getting a classical background in music. We study theory and go in depth on writing your own music and improv. She always makes it so fun and easy to learn!!

I've been teaching viola for 2 years and my students have felt more prepared in their community and school orchestras. As students progress they will better understand scales, bow technique, and musical phrasing. I specialize in beginning technique, typically use Essential Elements books, and have the following tools available for your lessons: personalized exercise packets, a keyboard, and scores. Something different about me is that I offer students methods to begin composition.

Adult students are welcome.
For lessons, parents are welcome to sit in!

About Trinity

HI, I'm Trin! I'm excited to meet you on your journey with the viola! I've been teaching private lessons since 2019 and have loved helping my students read music (not just in alto clef) and understand fundamental music theory. I also believe in performing the viola like it is "an extension of you

I am a 13 year-old student that has played the viola for 4 years and Ms. Trinity had been the best viola teacher I’ve had so far. I feel like I have advanced so much in my playing during the short year that she has taught me. I am now doing things that I thought were really terrifying at first, such as double stops and shifting.
I find Ms. Trinity very supportive and friendly, so I would recommend her to any kind of younger audience that may have a fear of playing certain pieces or learning something seemingly intimidating. She also likes to listen to the student’s requests and feedback, letting the student have a choice in their learning experience.
I have also found her prices reasonable and affordable for anyone that is having trouble finding lessons that are not painful to your wallet.
Overall, I have had a pleasant experience with Ms. Trinity as a teacher and recommend her to anyone that wants to pick up the viola or just needs a little push to advance in the right direction.

"Love taking lessons with Sarah. She encourages me by pointing out what I do right (positive reinforcement) and also corrects me if I didn't quite master something yet. Perfect lessons. She definitely respects the time and gets to the lessons right away. I enjoy the practices and tips you gave me when I have never been a fan of "practices" prior to taking classes with you. Thanks, Sarah."

"Shannon has a way about her that resonates immensely with my son. He is inspired and motivated to practice daily and the quality of his sound has improved even more than I had anticipated. He's a talented musician but it takes a talented tutor to pull out greatness in an artist. She achieves this with a style and grace that leaves an impression. Thank you for your efforts with my son."

"I thought I wanted to take viola lessons. Then I read her website and I realized that she might be able to help me get my voice back! I thought there was no hope ever. She has been extremely generous with her time, and I haven't seen her yet, but I'm not buying the viola I was planning on buying. I play cello, and piano still, but I am going to see if she can help me with my voice. She sounds incredible. I never dreamed that I could even have HOPE like this!"

"Zachary is a great instructor and friendly , you won't feel the stress of a regular class.I can say that I am always excited to learn because of the motivation he give. I wasn't sure at the beginning that the online lessons would work effectively and that I will see great results. I have already had 5 sessions and still have 15 left. He is so patient and gives a clear guidance to improve your level. Each week there is a prepared plan of what we will focus on depending on the performance which means you take the full use of every minute in the class. Also ,the weekly homework or exercises given helps you to know what to do to improve between each class.

Totally recommend"
