My son is 5 1/2 year old. He just started piano lessons three weeks ago with Brenda. She is an amazing person with children. I saw her how she deals with little children which are very difficult to get their attention all the times. We are happy with her.

Melissa specializes in the Alfred Series for piano and My First Piano Adventure for young students. This approach focuses on ear training and reading music. Custom exercises and choice of material is based on the student's level and field of study. Lessons are scheduled at the student's convenience as per availability. Frequency and length of lessons is based on the students needs.

About Melissa
WHAT TO EXPECT
When meeting with a student for the first time we always discuss his or her needs or goals. After that, we get into the foundation of building technique, starting with posture. Next, the student is assigned breathing exercises to practice. These exercises are structured to energize the body and manage the breath. Every single student learns about appoggio. This is the term used for the process of suspending exhalation while keeping the torso in the position of inhalation by using the transverse abdominis and obliques. Students also learn that the action of the diaphragm is involuntary, therefore the exercises in which we engage are in place to have command over physical activity that we can control.

A TYPICAL VOICE LESSON
After posture and breathing are addressed the students begin to learn how to produce tone,
which encompasses the vocal onset and the closure of the vocal folds. Students realize that proper breath management and producing tone go hand in hand. The ideal that the student and I work towards is a balance between superfluous air flow and and pressed pressure. This concept leads to a clean onset in which the edges of the vocal folds cleanly come together and stay closed during singing.

Students also learn how to negotiate and coordinate the vocal registers. This means that every student who walks into my studio learns where and what the larynx is. It is my job to be a second set of ears to help the student optimize his or her tone quality by maximizing vocal resonance. This concept may be different across genres, however every student learns how to begin coordinating the vocal process.

HOW I TEACH
My aim as a teacher of voice is to be flexible and innovative, and provide students with a clear and honest assessment. I strive to explain to each singer exactly how to complete a task, whether maintaining the position of inhalation or correcting posture. In lessons, I refrain from being demonstrative so that the student can find his or her own unique sound without attempting to copy my sound. I use this method so that the student learns how to be her own teacher. This way, the student will be able to identify and correct her own vocal problems. When I am not present, the student will have confidence in her skills and can make educated corrections in practice, rehearsals, and in performances.

TECHNIQUE
Throughout the course of lessons, it is my job to identify the most effective resonating space for the student and give her the skills to maintain that space. It is through the combination of effective breath management using appoggio and flow-phonation that the student becomes most efficient. Finding the most efficient technique for the student involves discovering the proper laryngeal position for the student’s voice type and by practicing continuity through all of the registers.

As all of the aspects of technique are being built in the studio, it is my job to ensure that I am building a musician. This means that I go over how the student needs to learn a piece and how to perform a piece. Often times with young students, they do not have the musical skills to teach themselves the pieces assigned. Sometimes the voice teacher’s job is to “plunk out the notes.” I highly encourage my students to take piano lessons and to use technology resources to aid them in building musicianship so they feel confident reading music. This process takes time, but it is the first step in building a competent performer.

MY GOALS
I always cater to the students tastes while still meeting requirements, if any. I believe that this fosters joy and excitement in music. My goal as a voice teacher not only involves building a good singer, but creating a performer. I make sure that I not only find performing opportunities for my students, but also I create them. Every semester I hold a studio recital for my students to perform their repertoire in front of an audience. In the Fall of 2015 I founded a local opera company in order to bring classical music to the community. My students made up the chorus of Handel’s Messiah that we performed that December. In addition, I have invited my students to participate in the church choir I direct every week. I believe that learning how to sing must take place in the studio, but the most important thing that I can do as a teacher is to make sure that the student knows how to transfer the skills learned in the classroom to real-world performing experiences.

APPROACH
I believe in a holistic approach to teaching, which involves connection to the text and acting. Though I cover many of these aspects in the studio, it is extremely beneficial for students to go outside of the studio and engage in physical courses such as yoga, Alexander technique, acting and dance. I personally engage in these activities to relate to my students and to be able to explain how we need to engage the body in singing. I also encourage my students to have coachings with other professionals to gain more insight into their repertoire.

Not every student who comes to my studio wants to sing opera. Many students want to sing in choir, in church, or just for fun. Overall, I always come from a place of acceptance and non judgement. Every voice is unique and I strive to help my students not only reach their goals, but surpass them.

San Francisco Bay Area native, Dr. Melissa McCann has been teaching voice and piano since 2010. She also received a full scholarship to attend the Rubin Institute for Music Criticism.

Melissa earned her Masters of Fine Arts in Vocal Performance from the University of California, Irvine at the Claire Trevor School of the Arts where she sang the National Anthem for President Barack Obama at the school’s 50thAnniversary Celebration. At UC Irvine, Dr. McCann received critical acclaim for her portrayal of Euridice in Gluck's Orfeo ed Euridice, and as the Soprano in Pergolesi's Stabat Mater.

Young voice students are taught general concepts, music theory, and ear training. After the voice is more mature, advanced and serious vocal study can be pursued. Melissa's students receive a well-rounded training in the style of their choice: Classical, Popular, Musical Theatre, and Jazz.

Melissa emphasizes on solid technique, posture, breathing, and control, in addition to music fundamentals.

Melissa was my first voice teacher, and I was so fortunate to have her. She was very patient with me because I was very shy and self conscious when it came to vocal lessons. She help me find my voice, and started crafting it using many different tools to help me understand the different elements that allows one to register sound. She is a joy to learn from, and I recommend any beginner to learn from her.

Amazing instructor! I have taken Korean classes before but it was a struggle. The first day of my tutoring, he explained the basics in such an easy and uncomplicated way. I learned more from that first lesson than I ever had before! Arron also does an excellent job of tailoring the lessons for me. He reviews what I do know quickly and spends more time on the things I don't understand or am struggling to understand. Again he explains what I don't understand is such a simple way and even more comforting he doesn't get frustrated or make me feel dumb when I do struggle. Highly recommended!

Classes with Arron have been really helpful. I think if you have classes with him, you're getting a great value. It seems very important to him that I understand what he's been teaching and that we complete the planned amount of work for each lesson.
Not only that, but he has even been kind enough to extend his teaching beyond the virtual classroom by answering questions that I've had between classes through messages. It is so helpful to have someone who knows what he's talking about to answer the tough questions that are too hard to find the answers to with Google.

I really appreciate your teaching. Thank you, teacher Arron.

Time flies; another year has almost gone by since I started my lessons with Cândida. Thought it would be a good time to leave an update here.
Anything I write down doesn’t feel quite enough, really. She has become so much more than a music teacher (or maybe that’s how the best teachers should be?). A friend, a wise guide in the world of music that’s so easy to get lost in and burn out. With a day job and family, I could have stayed a noodler on various instruments forever, but thanks to her I now can call myself a musician - while keeping that tricky life-music balance. I surely have a life-long path of improvement in front of me (like everyone else!). But if I have her by my side, I know I’ll make it. Felicidades!

I have been taking lessons with Candida for a few months. She is the most amazing instructor I have had the privilege of knowing. Her patience and understanding to helping me learn to sing and play the piano is exemplified by the fact that English is not my first language, yet she had never given up on me, even when I felt I could not do it. Her positive attitude and supportive nature made me never want to give up. Learning something new is something everyone should strive to achieve no matter what age you are and Candida is the best instructor if singing is your passion. Thank you Candida for never giving up on me. (Review translated from the Greek to English language).

I am a graduate of the Columbia-Juilliard exchange program with ten years of teaching experience in beginner to intermediate classical piano (as well as beginner to advanced jazz piano). I'm a full time performing musician, so I can teach skills that are relevant to a performing career, but I'm also just as happy to teach someone who has never played an instrument before. Every student is different, and so I believe in catering my lesson plan to the needs and wants of each student, beginning from their goals and working towards a comprehensive knowledge of the piano.

About Ben
My name is Ben, and I am a full-time performing jazz pianist and accordionist based in New York City (you can learn more about my music career in my professional bio, which is included below). I have been teaching for ten years in just about every setting (from classroom to private, young to old, jazz and classical). I love teaching because I love learning how to communicate and connect with people of all different backgrounds and learning styles, and I enjoy sharing the journey of music with others and coming to understand what music means to them. Every person has a different goal, and if I can help people learn how to take manageable steps towards that goal every day, I feel I have succeeded. Hope to meet you soon!

Professional Bio:

Ben is a jazz pianist, accordionist and composer based in New York City, and a graduate of the exc
hange program between Columbia University and Juilliard School of Music. I've taken jazz piano lessons with Ben for almost a year and I really enjoy them! He always finds new ways to explain things and suggests different exercises, even when we are working on one same tune. I always feel motivated to practice at the end of the lesson.

I have learned so much from Ben about what it is to play jazz and have enjoyed every minute of it.

Ben is not only a very talented pianist and kind human being, but he is an incredibly intuitive teacher who understands how to constructively offer suggestions for what needs to be improved but also knows how to push you to the next level (in a way that seems on the edges of what is reachable). This makes learning the piano so exciting, productive, and varied and fun. I highly recommend Ben. It is a privilege to learn from and with him.

Daniel's students not only obtain the skills of a well-rounded pianist, but learn to learn, learn to enjoy and learn to share in the magic of music making.
As a versatile musician who works as an high-level accompanist and classical pianist, Daniel uses the skills of composition, improvisation, sheet-music reading, collaboration, repertoire performance and music-theory application daily. It is these skills which Daniel bestows upon his students through his unique methodology. While each c
lass is personalized to the skillset and interests of the student, with the primary goal of inspiring them to learn and love music, Daniel's classes are a rigorous and exciting time for student, teacher and parent alike.

Daniel is currently employed as a pianist at the Juilliard School, LaGuardia High School For The Performing Arts, with The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater Company, The Martha Graham School Of Contemporary Dance, The Manhattan Youth Ballet and many more. He has taught a growing studio of piano students over his time in New York, as well as teaching for 'Music To Your Home', a major musical education company. He has taught theory, structure and the relationships between music and dance as a Guest Professor at The National University of Costa Rica, as well as in improvisation classes at The Ballet Hispanico School (NYC).
Daniel received extensive training and his Bachelor's Degree in Classical Piano Performance from The University Of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, and at El Instituto Superior De Artes, Costa Rica. He has also been trained as an elite Dance Accompanist for over a decade under the mentorship of the best accompanists in New York City. His work as an accompanist has brought him to Barcelona (Spain), Athens (Greece), San Jose (Costa Rica), Chicago (Illinois), and put him in the employment of nearly every major school and dance company in New York City.

Daniel would love to bring his skills, experience and love of music to you and your family.

A hour lesson with Daniel might go something like this!

Technical Work: [10 minutes]

- Scales, posture and technique, and 'Dozen A Day, Daily Piano Lesson Exercises' as well as other method's of technical development created by Daniel to work on dynamic shading, arpeggios, and tone often function to start the lesson, engaging the student's focus and challenging their memory to 'bring up' what was achieved in the previous lesson.

Repertoire: [15 minutes]

-Pieces are chosen from the 'Bastien Piano Teaching Method' which are supplemented by Daniel's personal collection of pieces and based on the students skill level and interest.
In this section we interact with the full capacity of the student to read music, master rhythm and technical difficulties, add increasingly subtle detail, achieve consistency and focus and all with the intention of eventually performing the work. Along the way we instill the knowledge and skills necessary to perform before an audience, often creating mock-performance environments.

Additional repertoire: [15 minutes]

- Students often learn and play Duet Repertoire with Daniel, engaging in the experience of Chamber musician creation and learning the importance of collaboration and listening.
- Students interested in pop and jazz begin work on aural skills or 'Ear Training', learning pieces by way of listening to them and then creating piano arrangements from the transcriptions they craft with Daniel's help. These arrangements become pieces in the student's repertoire.

Music Theory: [10 minutes]

- Theory: Students are taught early on to read 'key signatures' and 'time signatures' in tandem with the development of their scale work and their repertoire. Students learn the significance of the ordering of the scales, the intervals (distance between notes) which define them and multiple ways to deconstruct and define a scale and its parts, thereby allowing students to continue learning on their own, as well as developing the terminology to communicate with other musicians.
Theory gradually increases in complexity based on the student’s interest and skill level, to encompass every facet of chord making, harmony relationships and Roman Numeral Analysis.

- Vocab Word: Students receive a 'Vocab Word' every lesson. This word is a musical term, which will help the student to accurately communicate with Daniel and other musicians as well as more deeply understand the musical language.
- Flash Cards: Students also receive and develop a 'flash-card library'. This is a note-learning game which students play in each lesson with the goal of 'beating last weeks time' using increasing skills in sheet-music reading. As the student learns more notes and achieves faster times, the 'flash card library' grows and the challenge increases.

Improvisation: [5 minutes]

- Every lesson Daniel and the student improvise at least one piece of music. The student is guided over a period of weeks to internalize the concept of improvisation, eventually freeing them to the infinite and inspiring possibilities inherent in the practice of 'Improv'. Improvisations use and thereby reinforce the scales learned at the beginning of each lesson and demonstrate the importance of listening, collaboration, imagination and harmony.

The Color Game: [5 minutes]

- This is a game played at the end of each lesson in which Daniel and the student take turns striking a 'triad' (a chord with three notes). With eyes closed, the two participants begin to 'listen closely' to the chord as it is then restruck and eventually attempt to 'hear a color'. Students may also 'hear' shapes, textures, and scenes, which Daniel and the student then share with each other to great fascination and amusement, revealing similarities of interpretation and most importantly, opening the students mind to a new and magical understanding of sound.
This game, related to the psychological phenomenon of synesthesia, engages the students imagination, self-confidence and concludes each lesson is a fun, inspiring and exciting way.

Piano Notebook:

- All of Daniel's students keep a 'piano notebook', in which they receive a practice plan at the close of each lesson. The practice plan outlines the goals and methods of practice for the coming week, as well as containing advice from and a synopsis of that day's lesson. The notebook further serves as a workbook and a reference used throughout the learning process.

Sincerely,
Daniel Hyde
