Music Director of the Chicago Philharmonia Orchestra since 1985, Farobag has also served as Managing Director of the University of Chicago Performing Artists Series from 1989 through 2002 and principal conductor of its resident professional ensembles. A skilled interpreter of Baroque literature as well, Farobag continues in his capacity as Artistic Advisor to the Baroque Masterplayers, a virtuoso ensemble that concatenates period performance techniques with modern instruments thus creating a unique voice within the realm of 17th and 18th- century repertoire.
A double graduate of the Eastman School of Music and the University of Rochester, Farobag studied under Anastasia Jempelis, a pioneer of Suzuki violin pedagogy in the United States. In addition to the Suzuki curriculum, he is also associated with the Royal Conservatory Music Development Program that sets a national standard of musical achievement in various fields.
Befitting his penchant for encouraging artistic interest amongst younger members of his community, Farobag is also the principal conductor of the Zoroastrian Symphony Orchestra that offers a unique mixture of young and seasoned professionals sitting side-by-side in a strictly professional setting. Since the year 2000, the ZSO has staged highly successful performances at various venues in Houston, Chicago, and Toronto. A New Year's eve performance in Los Angeles is scheduled for 2014.
Having also taken graduate-level coursework in educational psychology, mathematics, and philosophy at the University of Chicago, Farobag offers tutelage in various areas of elementary and secondary education as well as in SAT, ACT and GRE test preparation.
Additionally, as a certified Reiki Master, therapeutic and/or educational sessions are also extended to those who may be inclined to alternative healing techniques.
*** Lesson Details ***
Sheer technique is necessary but insufficient to play an instrument well. Aural skills, that include the study of functional tonality and voice-leading are important factors that impart musicality. This is of great import if the prospective musician wants the audience to truly enjoy his or her performance !
Whether it be the 3 Rs or preparation in the performing arts, a remarkable instructor must go well beyond the subject matter at hand and help imbue the student with a spirit of wonder that, in due time, will foster enthusiasm necessary for excellence.
A child emulates and learns to communicate in his or her mother-tongue through a supporting and nurturing environment. Likewise, a student needs to be sufficiently motivated to embrace learning in a familiar supportive manner.
*** Studio Equipment ***
The In-Studio lesson take place in the living room. Driveway parking. No pets.
*** Travel Equipment ***
None; I do expect a reasonably good piano / keyboard at a student's home.

Very good instructor
Learned a lot, very pleased with my first session.
Truly loves to teach. Kind , patient. Loves children and it shows. Remarkable how Mr. Cooper can bring out the best in his students.
Mr. Cooper is patient, bright, kind and disciplined. He is the perfect combo of what you want and expect from an instructor. He teaches my 10 year old boy and 8 year old girl. We are so thrilled to have found him.
Mr. cooper gives the gift of music, the learning of, the pure appreciation for the violin and its beautiful sound. I am a student who has loved this string instrument for many years and am fortunate to now have Farobag Homi Cooper as my teacher. He is guiding me to a higher level of playing then I thought I was capable of.Show More
Excellent instructor. Our daughter felt comfortable right away. He is very patient and she learned a lot. Highly recommend.
I've been playing a few instruments for 23 years, and finally decided to get into violin. Farobag made me realize that I know next to nothing about the violin, and there is so much to learn. I played only a few notes in my first lesson, but his instruction was worth every penny. I am very excited for the next lesson and look forward to learning everything I can from Farobag. Highly recommended.Show More
Mr. Cooper is an experienced teacher. He teaches piano, violin & vocal from basic to advance level. My son has been taking piano classes from him for the past 3+ years. He loves to go to Mr. Cooper's classes. The foremost quality in Mr. Cooper is that he seeks perfection and tries to imbibe the same in his students. He encourages all his students to perform their best and is extremely patient in dealing with his students. Mr. Cooper lets me sit in my son's lessons and I got my 101 on classical music with these sessons. I can appreciate what my son plays and also now able to appreciate classical music in general.
Mr. Cooper encourages all his students to participate in IMA annual contests and puts a lot of effort in preparing his students for the same.
Mr. Copper is one of the best teachers that I know. I am a slow learner and he would teach me things over and over again until I understand. Overall, he is a great teacher and I would recommend him if you need help on math.
I decided to start singing lessons with Mr. Cooper about a year ago and I'm very pleased with the Service. I believe Mr. Cooper is a very gifted musician and singer who has a real ability to understand music and teach that understanding in a relatable way. I'm just beginning to learn about different musical concepts that really help me understand how to learn more effectively. I appreciate everything he's helped me with and plan to continue learning as much as possible.
I would highly recommend him for any relevant musical training.
I have had the pleasure of taking vocal lessons from Mr. Cooper for about 2 years now, as well as starting Suzuki piano not too long ago. He is a gifted teacher who truly has a passion for teaching and love for music! Not only has he improved my aural skills, but he has helped me understand music on a much deeper level! My knowledge of technique and overall musicianship has improved drastically while taking lessons with him. Mr. Cooper has challenged me and broadened my musical horizons. He has helped me advance and learn new technique on the piano, as well as expanding my vocal range and performance skills. I would highly recommend him!Show More

Mr. Farobag has taught our boys the piano and violin utilizing the Suzuki method. He is a true gentleman and an amazing teacher. I cannot say enough about him. We have had several instructors and Mr. Farobag far exceeds our expectations. We are very lucky to have found him. Mr. Farobag understands the pace of each child and knows how to motivate the student to exceed his expectations. Hiring Farobag has not only given us a superb instructor but a great teacher as well. He is very intelligent and kind and his lessons can be applied far beyond the keys of the piano. My kids always look forward to seeing Mr. Farobag.Show More
Both my daughters age 7 and age 10 have been taking lessons with Mr. Cooper for almost 2 years. We cannot say enough good things about him. Specifically, my older daughter has had 3 other teachers before Mr. Cooper, but has progressed leaps and bounds since starting with Mr. Cooper. He is knowledgeable, enthusiastic and a perfectionist, and I find that my daughters are always eager to go to lessons, and more importantly to practice throughout the week!Show More
Fantastic Teacher!! I started singing lessons 3 weeks ago and extremely happy with Mr.Cooper. He is very knowledgeable and patient!! I highly recommend him if you are thinking about taking lessons!!
Mr. Cooper is an extremely talented, knowledgeable, and respectful teacher. Being taught by him is such a positive experience because of his caring, sincere personality. Mr. Cooper goes above and beyond the expectations of a music coach by having such a contagious passion for music. Mr. Cooper has assisted me in becoming a more educated singer in ways I never had imagined possible. It is evident that he truly fine tunes each lesson to fit your individual needs. There is absolutely nothing bad to be said about him, and I highly recommend him as an instructor!Show More
My son (eight years old) has been taking piano lessons from Mr. Cooper for one year now and has made great improvement in his piano playing. With Mr. Cooper, he is just not learning to play, but also learning to add emotion to his playing, having musicality. Mr. Cooper has been extremely patient with my son even during times when I know my son is getting frustrated or losing focus. It is evident that Mr. Cooper loves what he does and shares that passion with his students. I highly recommend Mr. Cooper! I’m even thinking about adding voice lessons for my son with Mr. Cooper if our schedule permits.Show More
Mr. Farobag did a great job with my daughter! He was extremely flexible with his schedule, and has a great demeanor with children. He is patient and even tempered.
It's an added bonus that he would come to our home - no more lugging the kids to the facility for lessons!
Thank you for the good work ...
Farobag is an excellent singing coach who helped me make strides in my singing abilities. You can also tell he really enjoys what he does and is passionate about music and teaching in general.
He has a very deep understanding of musical theory/concepts, as well as the aesthetics of music. Also, his approach isn't overly technical but he makes make it "natural" so to speak.
I love listening to music. I took each of my sons to music lesson starting at age 4. Music and singing come natural to them now as adults.
My favorite times are listening to them and I would love to join in but I am always self conscience and don't want to embarrass them.
When we recently retired I decided to take some classes for enjoyment and also to push myself to conquer some fears..I was going to go to a local music teacher to inquire about singing lesson, but somehow I happened on takelessons.com and was matched up with Mr. Farobag. Lucky me!! I have been taking lessons on Skype for over 6 months now! Farobag is the kindest and the most patient teacher in the world..really, really..he makes me feel like I can keep a tune and that I am capable of improving.
I actually pleasantly surprised my family by volunteering at a camp talent show over the summer. I might not have been the best but I was given a standing ovation for trying. (and probably the oldest up there!)
..and this is the best..I was taking lessons for more than 2 months when I decided to look up Mr. Farobag on the TakeLessons site..Oh My Goodness! I really lucked out - that is all I will say- as I could go on and on about his talents and cv!
Thank You Thank you Farobag for your encouragement.
Mr. Farobag provides piano lessons for my teenage daughter. She has been working with him for about 10 months. Since she started working with Farobag, her love for playing piano has grown, and her skills have improved exponentially. In addition to his obvious talents, he is professional, patient, and also very flexible with scheduling. He has a genuine interest in seeing his students learn and improve. I would highly recommend him for anyone interested in taking lessons. He also has a strong background in math, and has offered to tutor my 3 children, if needed. We may be calling upon him soon for that!Show More
I can not describe my level of admiration and respect for Farobag. He is a great teacher, very much in sync with his inner child and therefore a perfect teacher. Hard to imagine he giving up of any of his students no matter how hard at times teaching appears to be.Show More
I am an older student coming back to the piano after many years away. Mr. Cooper is patience yet always encouraging! I have learned so much about music and the importance of fingering! He encourages yet challenges me to go beyond my comfort zone. I would recommend Mr. Cooper to anyone who is looking for a teacher. I know that I enjoy my lessons and look forward to my future ones!!!
I have had a great experience so far. Farobag is patient and motivating. I look forward to future lessons.
I am in my fourth year of completing my degree in music education. In the 6 months that I have been taking voice lessons, I have grown a lot. I have learned to project my voice more and be more confident in my singing. Besides learning to be a better singer, Mr. Cooper has also helped me improve upon my aural skills, which has helped me considerably in my school classes and preparing for student teaching. He was very encouraging and would challenge in at least one aspect at every lesson. The music he would provide me to sing was at a comfortable level for me, and was never boring. I enjoyed having Mr. Cooper as a teacher.
Call him Mr.Patience
I am an older adult student just starting piano. The piano is completely out of my comfort zone, but something I always wanted to learn.
Mr. Cooper has shown extraordinary patience with me. He has a way of teaching and correcting my constant errors that doesn't make me feel foolish. I get frustrated that it isn't coming easily, but I always leave class feeling optimistic about my future mastering the piano.
If Mr. Cooper can teach me I believe he can teach anyone.
Passion and Love
Farobag's passion for teaching is outstanding and even through the new technology can influence the student. Cyrus cautiously is warming up to the teachings of Farobag and I have a great hope and belief that will imprint his memory in a positive way for years to come. We look forward to continue with Mr. Cooper, he is a competent, patient, and passionate teacher.
Wow! Mr. Cooper is such a wonerful teacher. After only 5 lessons my daughter has built her range and is learning the importance of breathing. She loves coming to her lesson each week and is pushed in such a kind and positive way. Looking forward to continuing lessons. We can't say enough great things about Farabog!!
Excellent teaching skills
Mr. Farobag knows how to teach! If you put in the dedication and motivation, you will get results! He teaches in a way that acknowledges your skill-level, and he remembers(In spite of all the students he has.) what you were working on with him or your previous lesson! He ultimately teaches piano in a way that will help you steadily progress as long as you put in the effort on your part, just all around an amazing teacher.
Great Teacher, kids fall in love with music
Mr Cooper is an excellent teacher who is very nice and humble to my kids. My kids enjoy learning piano with him. Never seen them this excited to learn music.
If it had not been for time constraint and school taking the precedence I might have loved continuing with Mr Cooper. If need piano lessons for kids again I am going to request for Mr Cooper
My two children, an 8 year old boy and 6 year old girl, have been taking paino lessons from Farobag since March 2013. We weren't sure how my son, being all about typical "boy" things would be with paino lessons, however, he has done amazing. I was raised with piano, in that it helps to further coordinate the brains development and how it processes information generally speaking. I can only say that my children cannot appear to take their shoes off as quick as they'd like at the start of each piano lesson. I wanted to find a teacher who would be able to truly reach and further develop my children's musical apptitude to learning. Farobag has truly done that. I almost hesitate to share this information, because my husband and I feel like Farobag is our little secret, that if word gets out we won't be able to get lessons when we want them. However, it is that which we know other parents would love to find for their children and adults. I know he teaches other instruments as well. As a Mom, I truly couldn't be happier. My husband, not having the same upbringing I did with music, wasn't quite sure about piano lessons. However, even he is truly amazed at how much they have learned as well as how eager they are to deomonstrate it. He has seen how much of a benefit it has been for our children.
The lessons are very good. They are taught the correct way.
Farobag is amazing
Farobag is a very talented musician. He has taught me so much and I am very glad to have met him.
Farobag Cooper excels with the student who has played the piano over a period of years. Fingering, for example, is adjusted to fit the player's hands rather than the proscribved notations of the publisher. Interpretation is noted and practiced at every moment of the composition often by the instructor then followed by the student. Perhaps what sets Farobag apart is his manner of conducting as one performs. It is a feeling like being in an orchestra with one's personal conductor. But first mastery of score. Then interpretation. Voila! Music.
Excellent piano teacher!
Mr. Cooper is very patient with the student and stresses on learning the correct technique while playing the piano. He is very respectful and encouraging and sets goals for the student to achieve along the way. He pays attention to very small details and works with the student till they master each piece. I would recommend Mr. Cooper to anyone who is looking for a piano teacher!
